Lancashire Lightning Vitality T20 Blast at Old Trafford Loss

OUTLAWS THROW IT AWAY

This was certainly a case of a game that should have been won by Notts who lost to Lancashire by three runs due to poor game management with both bat and ball. On a two paced pitch with long boundaries, Notts had Lancashire 25 for three at the end of the power play and 45 for four at ten overs. But backed by superb batting from man of the match Glenn Maxwell with skipper Dane Vilas and aided by the fact that Notts elected not to take pace off the ball for too many of the last 10 overs, Lancashire got to a defendable total of 151. Gurney and Chappell bowled too short and Notts paid the consequences. Notts much better at setting rather than chasing totals only needed 76 off the last 10 overs with seven wickets still standing. But with Vilas wisely sticking with his slow men, Hales, Moores and Patel threw their wickets away. Christian much better against pace than spin bravely hit three sixes off the penultimate over bowled by Mahmood, but needing 12 off the last over they could only score eight as Lancashire got home backed up by ground fielding superior to Notts earlier efforts.

Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat on a used pitch. Notts surprisingly dropped Libby in favour of Zak Chappell. It left a Notts crucially a batsman light on a surface which would have suited the nudge and nurdle of Libby. Chappell unfortunately had a poor game, doing nothing to justify his selection.

Nottinghamshire got off to a superb start when Luke Wood (Pavilion End) removed Alex Davies playing onto his leg stump with the first ball of the innings. Off the fifth ball, more joy as Croft (1) lost his middle stump to the fired up Wood, 2 for 2. Carter bowled the next over and conceded four. Wood stayed on and Jennings hit Lancashire's first boundary, a shot through the covers, 14 for two off 3 overs. Imad picked up the third wicket as Livingstone (3) attempting a ramp shot lost his off stump, 14 for three off four overs, a wicket maiden for Imad. A single and a bye came off Wood's third over. Wood (3 0 10 2) very strangely never given his last over. Maxwell pulled Gurney for four, 23 for three at the end of the power play.

Three singles came off Patel's first over. Chappell bowled the eighth over and went for nine. Jennings charged down the pitch to Patel and was stumped for 16, 35 for four. Three singles off the over. Chappell conceded seven off the tenth over, 45 for four.

In over 11, Maxwell cover drove a poor ball from Patel to the ropes, eight off the over. Chappell was proving easy pickings, conceding 13 in the 12th over, with boundaries for Maxwell and Vilas. Imad conceded six. Vilas paddled Carter for four, 80 for four off 14 overs.

A short ball from Gurney was pulled for four by Vilas, 11 off the over. Vilas swept Carter for four as the runs were flowing, 10 off the over number 16. Imad returned and conceded five singles. A switch hit for Maxwell off Gurney brought the Australian a boundary. Two balls later Maxwell repeated the shot, this time for a six, 122 for 4 off 18 overs. Poor fielding from Hales on the ropes gave Maxwell his 50 off Imad. Maxwell was gifted another four as Clarke lost the ball in the floodlights and Maxwell brought up the 100 partnership with a six, 20 off the over. Vilas departed leg before to Gurney for 46 off 36 balls. The fifth wicket had added 107 off 11 overs. Maxwell hit another four off Gurney but finally was dismissed caught at fine leg by Patel, Maxwell 73 off 46 balls (7x4,2x6). Faulkner got a boundary off the last ball, Lancashire 151 for 6 off 20 overs.

Lancashire let off the hook

Notts had let Lancashire off the hook after outstanding bowling from Wood and the three spinners in the first half the innings. Chappell (3 0 29 0) and Gurney (4 0 42 2) both bowled disappointingly bowling too short on the two paced surface.

Clarke was leg before 0 playing back to a full length delivery to the first ball of the innings bowled by Gleeson from the Pavilion End. Hales hit a boundary through extra cover off the last ball, six off the over. Three came off the second over bowled by Mahmood. Faulkner came on for the third over and Duckett hit him for two fours, the first edged, 20 for one after three overs. Hales got a four off Gleeson through third man and then hit for another boundary, backward of square. Duckett departed in familiar fashion caught at mid off by Maxwell off Gleeson for 13, 29 for two. Patel on drove his first ball for four. Mahmood switched ends and Patel glided him for four through third man, six off the over. Patel punched Faulkner through the covers for four. Notts 46 for two at the end of the power play.

Hales swept Parkinson for four, eight off the over. A superb off side four by Patel off Livingstone was the highlight of the eighth over. Hales swept Parkinson for another boundary but going for a repeat shot, holed out to Maxwell on the square leg ropes for 29, 65 for three off 8.2 overs. Maxwell conceded seven as Notts stood at 76 for three after 10 overs.

Another nine was gathered off Livingstone including a boundary for Patel. A leg side four from Moores greeted the return of Gleeson, nine off over number 12. Moores (18) mistimed an attempted straight six off Livingstone and was caught by Livingstone at wide long off, 96 for 4 off 13 overs.

Patel was out for 34 skying Parkinson to Davies at deep extra cover, 99 for five after 15 overs. Imad was leg before to Livingstone for one, 101 for six. Livingstone 4 0 22 2. Maxwell conceded seven, as Notts now needed 42 off the last four overs. Wood was stumped by a country mile off Parkinson for five, 113 for seven. Parkinson 3 off 22 off his four overs. Faulkner then conceded six in the 18th over.

Notts needing some Christian faith

Christian hit a full toss from Mahmood for a leg side six. Christian repeated the shot off the last two balls of an over costing 21 runs. Notts needed 12 off the last over bowled by Faulkner. Carter got an offside single off the first ball. Christian did the same next ball. Carter (4) was bowled off the third ball, losing his off stump, 142 for eight.

Hapless end

The hapless Chappell was caught first ball at long on by Maxwell. Christian got two and then a four off the last ball. The skipper 41 not out off 24 balls (3x6,1x4). The home crowd went home happy trying to work out how they got over the line.

Heavy rain started five minutes after the close as Lancashire top the table. Notts so good on paper have seven points from seven games. Doubts still remain about the fielding and their batting under pressure. There is still a long way to go and qualification should be obtained into the knock outs with this line up. Anything less would add to what already has been a very disappointing season. MAG

With less than 24 hours between games, will Outlaws look to use their wider squad, to look at conditions and play accordingly or will Peter stick with the winning XI?

The extended squad announced as:

Alex Hales
Joe Clarke
Ben Duckett
Tom Moores
Dan Christian
Jake Libby
Imad Wasim
Samit Patel
Luke Wood
Matt Carter
Harry Gurney
Jake Ball
Zak Chappell
Chris Nash

They say the South group is generally stronger than the North, which I never really went along with, but, this season half of the teams in our group look particularly poor(on paper at least). Our record at Old Trafford is not great to say the least. The wicket was always renowned as being one of the better pitches with pace and carry and also offering something to the spinners. Presumably, however, with them having the same situation to us in hosting WC games, it will be a used surface so the team selection will be interesting. The inclusion of Jake Libby2.0 purely as an insurance policy if we lose 2 men early seems a strange one. We are effectively going into games with only 10 players in reality in some games. We had a similar situation with Sam Wood where he would bowl if all else failed. Granted Libby brings something to the field and is one of our better athletes but he's no Jonty Rhodes or Derek Randall and it seems somewhat strange to carry such a luxury player in our team in my opinion

  2. Surprised to see Chappell added to tonight's Squad - I thought that he carrying an injury yesterday!

  3. I see he is in the team..!
I fear the worst but just maybe he will surprise me..?
    What's happened to Fletch...??

    1. Fingers crossed, but at least he's the sixth bowler.

    2. 3 games on the bounce where Dan Christian didn't bowl himself. Two games where we lost. Just an observation. Perhaps he doesn't bowl on Saturday nights!

  4. Chappell for Libby? Oh dear oh dear!

    1. the pair are just keeping Coughlin's place warm for when the cotton wool comes off and the yellow and green uniform is put on - it will happen one day!

  5. It was a mistake to play Chappell - a huge mistake plus wickets given away by Clarke; Duckett; Hales and Patel. Full marks to Lancashire who used their bowlers extremely intelligently and in their last 3 Overs batting really savaged Notts. We seem to bat long and deep on paper BUT we need to bat effectively and responsibly - Hales is not delivering what we need and continues his long-time erractic batting - the occasional really good Innings followed by poor and average ones. Notts had this one won until the last 3 Overs of Lancashire's Innings - a real shame that we folded towards the end and Dan Christian was left to do too much single-handedly although his effort was quite remarkable.

    1. I would remove Clarke from the ‘chuck my wicket away’ four you mention (everyone gets a first baller now and again) and include Moores as one of the villains. Samit to his credit initially played well to the situation and looked like the only one genuinely gutted to get out. Duckett must be close to being dropped now surely, Nash or Libby would value their wicket far more.

    2. Duckett is safe following his score at Derby in the rain. Try reading some comments about Libby from a previous game, something along the lines of "he doesn't add anything to the side", "not worth his place", "another Sam Wood". I would disagree with those comments however and yes he would have been just the kind of player to have got us over the line last night by pushing those ones and twos instead of waiting and waiting for an explosive finale (that fell just short).

  6. I'm sorry Mr Moores (Notts Web Site interview) but Chappell didn't play well - he had the 2nd worst bowling figures and made a Duck and why wasn't Luke Wood used to bowl his full allocation of Overs despite having by far the best Bowling figures? Gurney was again not good either. Lancashire's tactics were a lot smarter than ours so is it a lack of cricket know-how with Notts rather than ability?

  7. Yes, brainless shots by Hales, Duckett, Moores & Patel + awful fielding ( how many 2's did Lancashire run, compared to us..!!) clutched defeat from the jaws of victory...really is time for a change of some personnel, and a vigorous fitness regime being introduced

  8. It was like they had decided to give Zak Chappell an opportunity, a proper chance to shine and when it didn't happen in his first over, they were duty bound to stick with him with a second. Once he'd been smacked about a bit they then decided he needed a wicket to give him confidence, so he had a third over but it still didn't happen for him. Meanwhile Lancashire were able to capitalise, build momentum and never looked back after that. On a night settled by such a small margin you have to wonder how they allowed Wood or Patel or Carter not to bowl their fourth overs. As MAG says, Lancs won it by taking pace off the ball just as Notts did the night before. If its not bust, why try and fix it.

  9. Frustrating in the extreme. I was not there but the report above suggests the reign of MN and PM is weary and not on the ball. I am sure all players are committed, but it is an odd situation that some may get money from yet another franchise competition if we fail to qualify. No allegations s, just feels uncomfortable. I really yearn for a team with more local youngsters in contracted for all cricket formats. Of course the team varies for different formats, but we need new energy. Friday was great, but maybe a golden night in a dark season ?

  10. I know it's not a true hat trick but it does warrant amention in dispatches ... Luke Wood last two balls on Friday the wickets of Will Rhodes and then Fidel Edwards; first ball on Saturday, the wicket of Alex Davies - 3 consecutive T20 balls bowled, all taking a wicket = a hat trick.

Why didn't he bowl his fourth over at the death on Saturday as he did on Friday?

  11. According to Mick Newell who was part of the commentary team on Radio Nottingham, the inclusion of Zak Chappell in the side was at the request of the captain Dan Christian to provide additional pace to exploit Glenn Maxwell's weakness against fast bowling. Unfortunately as Mick admitted it didn't work out in the way they had hoped but borrowing a phrase from Peter Moores 'that is sport'.

    1. Perhaps it's a perceived weakness. We all know how perceptive Mick Newell is.

  13. Why do Notts batsmen insist on going aerial? We were scoring at 9 an over and needed 9 an over. They didn’t need to entertain the Lancs crowd, just see it home.

    1. Yes, '1MH' - these rushes of blood to the head are what is wrong. OK, so Duckett, Hales, Moores, Coughlin, Slater, Clarke, Nash, Patel etc. are all capable of big hitting BUT the SKILL is knowing which balls to go aerial with and which ones not to - until his dismissal Patel used the pace of the ball well and guided a number of shots without needing to go aerial. As Peter Moores and Dan Christian said, they played some dumb shots. Time must now be running out for some of these players.

So Notts Pumas(long, long tail) starting at 8, possibly you could argue 7 as I'm not sure what Imad brings to the team with the willow manage to throw the game away twice. We had the game done&dusted afer the power play but then the bizarre&astonishing decision to give Zak Chappell all those overs. Full credit to Maxwell, that's why he gets the big bucks. We then have the game nailed with Samit batting so well but then panic sets in when the asking rate is well within our grasp. When Carter is promoted then you know you're in a mess. All had to do was get DC back on strike, awful play from now an experienced player. Possibly, in hindsight Libby may have been a better option but I don't think he should be part of the T20 side personally. it was the shot selection by the senior batsman that ultimately cost us. I find those commnents by our DoC quite staggering. How fast do they think an injury prone Zak Chappell is. Perhaps in 18months time he may be there. Guess DC knows about Glen Maxwell a lot better than we do but surely he assesss the wicket conditions and continues wth pace off. Do we not have Plan B anymore? PS! Anyone know what's happened to the destroyer of white ball bowling attacks we signed from Northants since he joined us?

  15. Durham and Birmingham could now both go ahead of Notts sending us down to 5th place on Matches played. The situation remains dire. No more Chappell please and bring back Libby and/or Fletcher.

    1. If we learn from past mistakes, get the right XI on the field, then there is no one in the group that should beat us. That is barring something special by an individual. So let's stop shooting ourselves in the foot, cut out the unnecessary reckless shots and start a run of wins.

Yes, absolutely spot on HBD, you are 1 zillion percent right with that one

    3. I seem to remember Libby doing well last year in a t20, wasn't it v Lancs?. I was impressed with his fielding on Friday (PS - 12000 on Friday? it was packed! - I would have said 15000). Isnt he the victim of no Mullaney and Christian not bowling much? (i.e. they feel they need to pick another bowler).

I am sure I read that Zak was a number 8 batsman capable of powerful hitting - and then we signed him.

Surely Fletch or Coughlin for the next game.....

I am not so convinced Gurney is offering huge amounts consistently...

  16. In a nutshell they broke the golden rule of ‘never change a winning side’ especially after winning so convincingly the previous one.

  17. Good to see that ten-an-over Sodhi has been replaced by ten-an-over Chappell. One can hardly criticise the skipper but as always some eccentric decision making. All to do now as this coming Friday looks to be a washout at Brum.

  19. apart from Lancashire there are 8 pretty average teams in the league, all capable of beating each other
Notts should however be beating the lot of them with the individuals we have, all comes down to focus discipline and playing each game sensibly... hopefully Dan's rollicking to them will have the desired effect
