  1. Malan, if it happens, will make Yorkshire quite strong I think. Lyth, Kohler-C, Balance and Malan as leading batsmen......if as we think Yorkshire were in for Duckett last year, then they are probably glad to have saved their money.

Said it before, but I am getting a little fed up of clubs "doing their business" whilst we appear to be sitting on our hands....

  2. Getting in early didn't really work for Notts either last year.IMHO We must sort out the underlying problems before we can move forward. We all suspect who we think are the problems. Isn't it time for the current committee to act and put motions into play to sort the current mess out, getting rid of those holding the club back, unless they are of the collective opinion that all in the Notts garden is rosy and we've just been unlucky for 21 games on the bounce.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Under the current situation the club finds itself in it will be very difficult to attract any new players especially those with any ambition. Now relegated Notts are not a very attractive proposition especially under the shadow of the growing exodus of players, physically or mentally who see their and the game’s future in the shorter formats. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a departure or two before any arrivals.

  4. Even tho I don't give a toss about this farcical competition, that draft smacks of desperation on 'Notts' part. I had to turn over, couldn't stand looking at that smug git Mick.

  5. One Day Cup fast becoming a tournament to blood reserve players and youngsters.
With the Final being so late, the unavailable 100 players will be able to come back and get the glory.

  6. Any idea that the Trent Deep Pockets will be some sort of East Midlands team totally gone. To be honest even with the "specials" it is a pretty ordinary group of players. And is Harry G an "icon" ?

  8. That is very hard to bear, not sure those two ex First Class Cricket even know what good manners are. Also, I get the impression the draft "teams" in the Hundred include very few young players. It is going to be tough going for youngsters to learn the game and succeed at the top level now. ECB should be ashamed of themselves

  9. Ex First Class = no class

  10. And IN comes Ben Compton on a 1-year Deal - well earned. I saw him demonstrate great promise and potential in the 2nds at Lady Bay last Season and I agree that his batting does seem better suited to the longer format.

  11. Kimber, the latest in a line of promising bowlers, to shun Notts and depart for pasture's new, in this case the Surrey gravy train.

It would appear that Notts have become as attractive as Derbyshire and Leicestershire, when it comes to persuadung talented players to nail their flags to the mast.

Sadly, with the inept committee and management currently in situ, the situation s likely to deteriorate even further.

    1. Why would they stay? Jake Ball has stayed put and look what's happened to his form, whereas Matt Milnes and Brett Hutton departed for the greener grass in pastures new and have "improved". Woody's development stalled with the treatment he received from Notts so he had to move on, and he also got a whacking pay rise (by all accounts). So younger players can see what has happened to others and learn from and follow their examples.

Yes, it's all a bit disturbing really. We are no longer seen as the best option by a lot of players now yet we are one of the best grounds and have the best coach in country(well, that's we keep being told anyway). Our dear old DoC himself said they'll be much more movements between players than we're used to but that's already an excuse for his very own shortcomings you could suggest. The TB spin always has the usual excuse of "Well, we offered A,B and C a new contract. They chose to sign for another county " but in the case of Milns and Seabiscuit(Luke Wood) there was a lot more to it and in reality they were never going to stay. To lose these two, in particular, when we had invested time and money through the academy/second team was in my opinion, criminal.

  12. I get the impression that Newell has hamstrung himself having being saddled with players losing their central contracts, players not being contracted for all formats and inflated wages for those newcomers in 2018 brought in to bail us out of a hole in 2018 - the same hole we never climbed out of in 2019 when those newcomers never delivered the goods. In other words, there's no money left to improve the contracts for players that we need to keep. Woody was treated harshly IMHO and Brett(yes I know he was already gone in 2018) and Milnes never got a fair crack of the whip and so all felt that they had to leave to progress their games.

  13. Just read Paul Coughlin going back to Durham with a year left on his contract. We've invested 2 years in him being injured. We are continually told the dressing room is too young and inexperienced so the best athlete at the club goes also. Assuming he could have stayed fit would have been perfect for us next season.Capable of taking the new ball and a genuine no.8 batsman, not the usual tailender we play there. What's going off at the club these days?

    1. No loyalty to Notts for sure considering the club paid him to watch cricket from the treatment room.
Counting Footitt, we are now 3 bowlers light, from the season end.
Bottom line , all the players with talent want out, and with Newell at the helm, no one of any quality wants to join us.
Both Newell and Moores will have to eat humble pie ,and go for short term replacements via the Kolpak route.
Through the intransigence of our beloved committee, who publically refuse that there is a problem which is blindingly obvious to everyone else, the club is sinking fast.
With the team we have at this moment, it is a good job that you cannot get relegated from division 2.

  14. Another piece of news for Notts today that does not feel great. If money is becoming a problem for the club, and a wage structure that seems to favour the Four Flops who came in, and the image of the club for players to be attracted to the club is badly damaged, then we are in something of a pickle. I hope and have to believe we can win promotion, but it is no shoe in. It will be tough, it was in 2017 and that was a much better team. But there is something else wrong, it is a Karma thing. Even walking past you can feel a sort of negative vibe. Even if the CEO and DOC are decent people, and I don't really know them other than short conversations, the club needs new and fresh blood at the top. If we cannot sign players OK, but at least some positive and good coaching. Fresh people to the club

  15. Just seen the DoC in my local pet store carrying a big top hat trying to round up some rabbits but not so sure he'll go solely for the young, inexperienced English ones this time?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just where does this end for Newell..?
For various reasons signing after signing is a total flop, and I dread to think how much cash (our membership money) he throws down the drain EVERY YEAR
Can someone/anyone please listen to the fans of this once great club, and get changes at the top made NOW

    ReplyDelete
  17. And OUR COMMITTEE continue to support Mr Newell and HIS signings and his Coaching staff. Does he even have a clue?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No Philip, he doesn't have a clue, I think he has become a legend in his own mind.
When Moore's was handed a new 2 year contract as reward for failure, by the pathetic excuse of a committee,he stated he would rebuild the team. He obviously hadn't discused this with Newell who by his actions in losing Wood ,Kimber and now Coughlan, is intent on the opposite.
The vanity project of the CEO which is now the "white elephant in the room" *ie the high rise restaurant above Radcliffe Road has by all accounts drained the finances. The next to leave will be the employees in the membership office, who will have nothing to do.
The club would appear to be in a complete mess.

Yet no one is admitting any responsibly. SHAMEFUL

  20. A new assistant coach Kevin Shine appointed today...good luck to him but what on earth is Andy Pick's new job, which I guess comes with no salary reduction....If it wasn't Notts you would think it's April fools Day for retaining someone who consistently fails ..!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Correct, Paul. I view this as further humiliation. Clearly Pick had been down-graded (if not in salary terms' although he ought to be!). But where is our Batting Coach? Sadly, the management of the Club just goes from bad to worse - bring on the AGM!!! What an absolute joke of a Committee we have - time they went. The minority clearly have no influence so they would make more of an impact by resigning en masse.

      Delete
    2. Another chief and still no Indians.
Pick is now supposidly, taking on one of Mr Newell's responsibilities, that is player pathway talent identification, whatever that means.
With Shine coming in as another assistant to Moores, where does this leave Franks, and what is he going to be doing.
As Cloughy used to say, "it is too daft for words".
Let us hope that Notts can recruit 2 or 3 bowlers for Shine to get his teeth into, otherwise he will only have a part time job.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I completely agree Mark. Talk about looking after yer old mates..... Apart from Pick's ridiculous new title(I would have thought "Head of Cornish Pasty sampling" may have been a more worthwhile role for him, I guess it is in fact a positive move however, apart from wasting more money on Picks salary, as now we obviously have a top quality bowling coach, albeit a pity we haven't got any bowlers. The lads in the stiffs are lucky now with all these coaches to bring them through.Pity Milns, Hutton Coughlin and Seabiscuit all decided to leave now we have a top class bowling coach at the helm.Guess his biggest task will be somehow getting Jake Ball to somewhere near his best again

Possibly not quite good enough if I'm being a bit harsh and who knows whether we would have offered him a new deal but it's a disturbing trend that players do not want to stay anymore.Apparently, we will recruit a replacement with red ball in mind. Let's all hope it goes a bit better than some of the signings made recently.

  24. How not to sell next seasons memberships....Notts could write a best seller on that subject...

Why is other clubs seem to find it easy to add to their playing staff, All we get are vague promises that the DoC is looking.

Given MN's rather mixed record in that area, I think it's fair to say we are not holding our breath.

It's all very well putting faith in our younger players , But in order for that too work you do need a few older heads

Like many Notts fans I check the net for any sign we have a new member of staff.... So far I have been disappointed, Please Notts, don't make us wait too much longer..

  25. Jake Libby - a throughly nice guy, pleasant, spoke with Members / Supporters especially at Lady Bay and a real trier. I was privileged to see his maiden century at Notts but his serious knee injury seemed to then, very understandably, set him back. I hope that his move to Worcestershire works out well - he deserves success. In the absence of Notts having a specialist batting Coach lately he has done really well.

  28. Will be very interesting to see the total Membership numbers next Season - there could easily be a drop of 1,000 or more .
Ref the dearth of new signings . Why would Notts want to spend a lot of money on new RED BALL signings ? The County Championship is being slowly and shamelessly downgraded each season and pushed out to the seasons margins . The 50 Over Comp will now be almost a case of watching Second Elevens performing . Were Notts conned by the powers that be in taking the 50 Over final to Trent Bridge ? With perhaps a lot of unknowns playing in the Final it may be a hard sell for Notts . All the cricket publicity and promotion by the ECB is going into white ball cricket . They obviously think thats the future of the game . So will the Counties now just mainly concentrate on using their cash to obtain good exciting WHITE BALL players ? The RED BALL stuff will just have to take its chance with whatever players are available and still want to play it .
How long before some Counties have TWO separate teams ?
A highly paid WHITE BALL team of the top players
Plus a separate RED BALL team made up of has beens and second raters plus a few young hopefuls .
I hope I am proved wrong - but this looks like the way the game is evolving . As Lisa P said at a members forum meeting during the summer " the pace of change in cricket is staggering - we can hardly keep up " ( or words to that effect ).
A lot of existing Members will no doubt be like me and wait for the full fixture list before shelling out .How many days of 4 day cricket will we see next year at Trent Bridge - played in pleasant weather with good light ?
That will be the acid test for quite a few .

    1. Sadly Ms Pursestrings isn't being totally honest as it looks like Notts are, more than any other county, driving through those "staggeringly" rapid changes.

    5. And you are correct 'Nottsviewer' - but why was he released? Answer, extremely poor performances - so welcome to Notts!!! If Lancashire couldn't sort him out what hope do Notts have - or is it desperation?

  29. With such a massive Coaching Squad which has just got even bigger one wonders just how much is left in the budget for Players. It seems to me that things at Notts have just got completely out of control with Mick Newell having continued to increase his own 'empire' - and the 'Six' Restaurant also 'eating' away at the clubs income - one hears highly worrying figures as to just how much this 'vanity' Project is in debt - will it ever make any money for the Club? Sadly, perhaps the Club has to be brought to its knees for anything to change - those powerful influences on the Committee will stop at almost nothing to ensure their own 'safety' with its attached privileges. The 'tail' continues to 'wag' the 'dog' - so, Members, perhaps you may decide that renewing in 2020 for far less cricket at Trent Bridge is not the option for you.

  30. So, the rumours were true then. Must have a lot of natural ability and renowned patience for crease occupation which is badly needed amongst our top 6.It is, however, a big worry he has been out of form for would it be 3 years ? Believe he had serious hand/wrist injury initially that kept him out for some time and has not been able to recapture his form from 2016. So then, it's a straight Hameed for Libby2.0 red ball replacement so that just leaves Coughlin(the only genuine all rounder we had) and Seabiscuit to replace - or will the Pursehouse pursestrings not stretch that far anymore?

    1. Yes, its a bit alarming Lanky have released him completely at such a young age.Summat has gone drastically wrong with him as the Media were talking about him being the England opener for many years after impressing so much in his 3 tests.Does anybody know whether it is the injury that is primarily responsible for his lack of form or thats just a case of putting 2 and 2 together and making Cafe 6?

      Delete
  32. On a serious note it seems clear that cricketers who have sustained serious injuries / traumas can face a real uphill struggle to recover 'psychologically' - physical recovery alone is not always sufficient and they need a lot of very careful nurturing back into the Game. They will have unrealistic expectations of themselves very often and become frustrated if they do not swiftly recover their previous form - but huge patience and understanding are required. For many the only 'luck' they seem to experience is 'bad luck' - and there are times when just nothing seems to be going right. So I hope that the changes of Clubs will really help those either leaving Notts or coming to it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. There have been various suggestions about his decline - that he's suffered from too much advice (from his father), too little advice (Lancs missing a batting coach), too much encouragement (people trying to get him to play a more expansive game), too little encouragement (the Lancs DoC running him down at every opportunity). It's struck me that his big strength is playing spin, which he had a lot of in his successful season and test matches, and less in the subsequent years (and virtually none in the 2nd division this year). Perhaps that's a route that Notts plan to go down next year, with some decent spin bowlers and a shortage of quality pace. Otherwise he's not going to see a lot of spin bowling next year either, and will need to develop his batting against quick bowling and recover his confidence at the same time if he's going to improve. That makes him a pretty high-risk (and probably quite high cost) signing to my mind. From my usual Derbyshire perspective, there's been some discussion among supporters about him as an option, and I don't think many of us would have been too excited if we had signed him. Presumably, he has some sort of relationship with Moores from his early days with Lancashire, which should help, but he wasn't really what I expected Notts to be looking at to put right last year's failings. Maybe there's more on the way, but one thing is certain - there's going to be at least one highly-paid batting drinks waiter at Trent Bridge next year unless there's more exits to follow.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You make excellent points 'notoveryet' - 'too many cooks' do indeed 'spoil the broth.' The difficulties he faces seem quite extensive - whether Notts in its present state of upheaval and turmoil is the right place for him to receive the help he needs has to be highly debateable.

    ReplyDelete
  35. So, what exactly does that mean Sir Philip, when you say Tenant and his lynch mob have "revoked" your membership ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Perhaps just their 'officious' use of language. They would have been better just to accept the resignation without 'rubbing salt into the wounds' that membership had been 'revoked.'

  36. Interesting to read that according to the Cricketer magazine Notts are planning to sign the Leicestershire overseas player of the last two seasons,

He is the Pakistani fast bowler Mohammed Abbas, A quick look at his bowling average suggests given Notts fast bowling stock, It might prove to be a wise move...

  37. At what cost financially though? Another 'journeyman' will not solve Notts longer-term problems - just a 'sticking plaster' over serious problems.

  38. Well he was man of the match 2 years ago against England in the Lord's Test, although England played some terrible shots against him, and he did little in the next Test. Seen him bowl quite a lot, he is very accurate and gives very few runs away, but he does not swing it much even in favourable conditions. He would do a stesfy job , but not spectacular. Just my opinion, but I think Notts need someone with a bit more edge to their bowling

  41. Not sure what to make of DC again. A safe fit for the DoC&PM so can see their logic, but does he still win that many games with his own performances now he's in the twilight of his career. On the other hand captains the group well and can't really blame him for the complete disaster that unfolded when we went in to bat.Ironic that Rashid Khan is first pick for Trent Deep Pockets but then is snapped up again by Sussex in the blast. The same situation applies with Short. Presumably this is just money and we weren't prepared to cough up for them to play for the Notts Outlaws also?

    1. All in line with the Blast slide from pole position. an uninspired and as you say SJ, "safe" option. Just a bit meh

  42. So sad re Simon Kerrigan. He really did seem a prospect and played a Test Match. True bowlers can lose total confidence, sometimes never to get it back. I think Matthew Carter is one of those hurt by the marinslisationof The County Championship and spin bowling is one of the skills that is really suffering. Still not sure why Leach was not there for the last day if Test today, by the way

    1. Yes, Rich I was wondering where he'd gone. Reminds me a bit of Lankys other spinner who lost his way Chris Schofield and to a somewhat lesser extent our own Jimmy Hindson. It's completely bizarre you can get to that level and then lose your way.

  44. Mohammad Abbas - He's good, let's hope he turns it on for Notts . I was at the SCG yesterday and watched Sean Abbott bat impressively for NSW scoring 86 v. WA in the Sheffield Shield fixture between the top 2 States on the ladder. Score after 3 days of 4 : WA 240 and 111-5 Khuwaja 53*, NSW 375. He opened the bowling too and looked a sharp medium to quick pace grabbing one wicket [12-5-10-1] . He looks an excellent acquisition for Derbyshire.

  46. Our winter recruitment is on the verge of becoming whats the word......bewildering? I really had to read this one twice. Please tell me someone of some real quality is still to be signed? Have always thought nothing could surpass Fawlty Towers for comedy but these combined 3 certainly have the edge on John Cleese

    1. It’s the Div 2 factor of course. Any quality player with potential ain’t going to sign to play in Div 2. We’ll only get rookies or reluctant retirees from other clubs.

    2. Yes, fabulous news. I was overlooking that point. Previously, it was never really too much of a problem as A) we were odds on to get straight back and B) had a lot of top pros in the dressing room.Sady, it would now appear those halcyon days have gone

  47. On the plus side we do now have a bowling coach that is worthy of the name, Hopefully we will see the results of his work this summer,

Tom Barber looks an interesting signing, left arm, fast all he needs is someone to give him focus Let's hope Kevin Shine is that person.

Notts have not taken much of a risk with Barbers signing, A years contract seems fair, If he does well he can look forward to many more years at the best ground in the country,If it all goes badly, Well at least we tried !

  48. Trying to have a bit of fun and pick my team for that first CC match in 7 April. Of course much can change. Think we must put virtually full team out at Fenners. Struggling, if we play the skip and Peter Trego then we have 2 guys who bat well but have not bowled much in last 2 years. Maybe they will bowl more. If not though we are faced with going in either a batsman or bowler short. We just cannot go in a batsman light with our track record. Samit in for me due to experience and deep knowledge of the game. With a heavy heart LPW not in, as not much fun for spinners that early in the year

He has previously worked extensively with Kevin Shine and holds the record for the fastest delivery bowled at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough (reckoned to be 97 mph).

This was Middlesex's assessment of him on his release at the end of last season:

  50. There was a feeling when he was in Minor Counties, loaned from Midd, that there is real potential there. Sure, there could be, and maybe good signing, but he could be like Wood of 4 years ago

  52. Yes, I am sure Pujara is thoroughly likeable bloke and brilliant in the dressing room. There was just one very slight problem with as overseas batter and that is he didn't score many runs. Brilliant stats on the sub cont, but up to now not really got to grips with English conditions certainly in the domestic format

  53. Yes, maybe BIG Dave G. Assuming this is now the end of our recruitment it's fair to say I am pretty unimpressed. Did we only have the ONE Kolpak target ? How anyone at the club can say the squad is stronger than last year is an utter joke. We've jettisoned some quality players and replaced them with rejects, a has been and young totally unproven squad members. perhaps it's just me and everyone else seems ok with what we've done in the close season?

  54. If Haseeb Hameed can regain what he once had and takes the Stonewall role than our squadron of cavaleirs can play around him and the signings will have been effective. But, if he doesn't then we are, as you say, in a weaker position, unless youth really does get a chance and some certain players lose their apparent "devine right" to play regardless of form. I don't expect Compton or Barber to get a look in unless we are plagued by injuries. Trego certainly talks the talk, so let's hope he has got some miles in those legs to walk the walk.

I'm expecting a T20 overseas announcement very soon, perhaps before 19:00 on Monday eh.

  55. Maxwells record in t20 in domestic county cricket is surprisingly not that great, but it's a big statement of ambition from Lanky again . Rumours abound that our 2nd overseas if we have one will be Imad Wasim again which will be a very good signing IMO

  56. Well we certainly need somebody of proven class.
Someone to bring the TB crowds to life and who looks keen for us to WIN .
