Peter Moores Signs New Contract

The Notts Committee following their meeting earlier this week have let it be known that Head Coach Peter Moores has now signed a new two year contract.

Reward for failure?

Chance to put things right?

Moores told the club's website:

“I want to put things right,” said Moores. “We’re in a tough place at the moment, but I’m passionate about this Club and I want to see us through this next period.
“We played some very good white-ball cricket in 2019 and we’re determined to remain one of the country’s most consistent forces in those formats. But it hurts me every day that we’ve been nowhere near the required standard with our red-ball cricket.
“We have to accept that the Second Division is the place we deserve to be based on the way we’ve played. We’ve now got to work harder than ever and fight to get back to where we want to be.”

When Peter Moores joined the Notts staff in 2015, he joined with one the best coaching reputations and had respect of most in the game worldwide, it is now debatable if he still retains that same level of respect following two relegations, inconsistent white ball performances and failure to forge a successful squad or the bringing through any younger batsmen over the past five seasons.
Was he fighting off the offers to go elsewhere?
Probably not the same as he once was in 2015.
Moores must be now be viewed as being fire-proof being 21 games and counting since the last First Class win but still being rewarded with a new (likely improved) contract.
However you could argue that now he has got a contract, he can be sacked whereas before out of contract...

  1. The Committee appears to have changed its mind - no doubt due to pressure from Peter (and his Advisers) not to agree to a 1-year rolling Contract. When he was out-of-Contract he could have simply be let go - but now he is re-employed with the employment safeguards inherent in that status. Did the Committee bottle it?

    1. Bozo's Brexit will sort out any of those employment rights that he might think he has.

    2. Why did we have him back? Look at his current track record. He has not delivered.

  2. I have a lot of respect for Peter Moores, having said that this is a huge gamble. Two relegations, but to be fair 2 trophies and a promotion in his Notts time so far. But that rather hides the abject performances last Summer. In most CC matches we did not just lose, we were not in the contest. If the likes of LPW and the school boy are not given decent chances next Summer, it could be an unhappy day season again. But if youth is given a chance with a.nucleous of experienced players, then it could be a while ole better. We need an early win, winning is a habit, just as losing is

  4. I don't think Moores has the right to dine out on the "double white ball cup wins" anymore, not even at the elevated Six; not after last season. The worst ever side in the championship - statistical fact and the feckless nature of those defeats make supporters ashamed of their club (or at least this supporter of 40 plus years). The pathetic nature of the defeat in the T20 S/F, reckless, naive, badly led from the bench - all apply and all with an expensively assembled squad. On and off the field discipline, rumoured to be the worst by any Notts team ever in the modern era. Yeah sure give guy a new contract, let's have more of the same. IT'S A DISGRACE.

  5. Typical of this pathetic club and it's hierarchy...what kind of message does this send out...seem to recall Newell was rewarded with a previously non existent DOC job after years of failure...now Moores gets a new
    contract... unbelievable..!!
Another member with 40+ years supporting the club who will not give this disgraceful club another visit..!!

  6. At the risk of sounding too charitable after such a woeful red ball season I guess Peter Moores probably just about deserves another contract. Two trophies and a promotion during his tenure are of course balanced out by two dismal relegations, the most recent after the worst championship performance by any county in living memory. I am not sure where any of this leaves Mick Newell, an extraordinary club servant who has helped to deliver some wonderful highs along with some truly wretched lows. I would suggest next season is absolutely critical to the club's future leadership, and Messrs Newell and Moores must deliver promotion and a T20 quarter final spot at least to justify their continuing roles. And with Stephen Fleming back in Nottingham, albeit in charge of a contrived circus, who knows what could lie ahead? Roll on next April....it's got to be better than this season....

Shameful decision rewarding failure with a new contract. Most teams make a change due to midtable mediocrity and this is really laughable. Expect further announcements soon about new contracts for the Cartel Ringmaster and The General. I don't buy PM's nice guy image as all it has done is turn out soft over comfortable players.

  9. I was hoping for a change of direction that might encourage me to renew my membership. Just read that Peter Moores has had his contract extended by 2 years. I suppose that at least it's made the decision to not renew easier. Hating this apathetic and dismissive attitude from the Club that I have loved for a very long time.

  10. Is Mr pick still going to be there

  11. The fact, that Moores and more importantly Newell, are still at the club after another shambolic season, shows how far detached the committee are, from reality.

Either that, or they are frightened of upsetting Mr and Mrs Pursehouse.
What a bunch of spineless non enterties, purporting to be ambassadors for the club.

This decision to give Moores a new contract, will increase the amount of ridicule and contempt that other counties and cricket commentators, have for Notts, as a cricket club, and rightly so

As things stand, what motivation is there for anyone to renew their membership next season?

  12. Paul; Mark; Chris and others who are talking about not renewing memberships for 2020 - there are those on the Committee who do agree with you and share your feelings but, as with any Committee, it is the majority vote that carries the day.

I too feel that Peter Moores is a genuine and committed Head Coach but, yes, there are some very major issues which need to tackled and resolved.

Without doubt the Club has lost some very experienced players from the Championship side and so there is a 're-building' exercise to be worked on and completed - whether several of the latest recuitmnets can rise to the task is altogether another matter.

We do have promising younger players working their ways through, Liam Patterson-White; Lyndon James; Sol Budinger, Jack Blatherwick and Joey Evison plus possibly the rather more experienced Ben Compton.

Next Season will be a pivotal one and Nottinghamshire will have to demonstrate that facing weaker Sides in Division 2 they really are better than them - they, of course, will be fired up to take our 'scalps' in every Game played against us so it will not be easy.

Steven Mullaney, Luke Fletcher and Samit Patel will have to play key roles as the senior players - a lot will rest on their shoulders.

So, despite my own very serious concerns and disappointments I would urge members to renew - it is only from within the Club that we can influence change.

  13. It's very true that in order to change anything within our club you need to be able to vote, Being a member gives you that opportunity.

Having said that you do feel like your concerns are being ignored, It is quite obvious that there are members of the committee who like the comforts that job brings, The problem we the members have is identifying those who want to see the club move forward and those who prefer nice lunches, parking so close they hardly have to walk, Not forgetting their comfy seats no doubt with drinks on tap.

Change on the committee though will take a few years to happen, And that is only if we can as mentioned earlier identify those that are blocking change.

Short term it looks very much a case of status quo on the playing side ,Notts should do okay next season , But you would think the likes of Middlesex and Sussex thought the same when they were relegated.

Some teams do bounce back at the first time of asking,Lancashire this season are a good example of that, Notts themselves managed it a few years ago.

    Will it happen again ?

Possibly, But Notts dearly need to add some experience, We do have some talented young players coming through it as is the case with players who have little experience at championship level they will need guidance.

Perhaps Notts need to look at a team like Essex who spent a few years in Division 2 before gaing promotion , If Essex had spent that time in Division 1 trying to blood their younger players it may well have destroyed their confidence Essex took their time and have now reaped the rewards, Two championships and a T20 win are not to sniffed at.

Notts could do the same,But that would entail a wait down in division 2

I wonder if we are all ready for that ?

    1. What we should have had over the past 10 years was the gradual integration of home developed players, joining the established team but for some reason no batsman has come through; so a policy of taking players from other counties, drawn to Test venue Trent Bridge, Mick's cheque book and now a chance to work with Peter Moores have all been used as carrots to effect that policy...

but it hasn't worked, or at least it has shown not to be sustainable. It works for one off seasons, years of drought and famine followed by a feast and then back to drought again. Not enough runs and not enough wickets, no one appeared to be good enough from mid-April to the end of September - that's not just a bad run of form running through the whole squad similtaneously.

We have hit an all time low, the feeble T20 Semi finale just put a cocked hat on the season.

Perhaps the adoption of the Essex model might be best for Notts in the longer term as Zanga says; certainly if players eventually specialise like Gurney and Hales but I can't help thinking that Essex's success is built to a great extent on the back of a Kolpak import whose style suits the dust tracks of Chelmsford and the Kolpak route has been ruled out (we'll ignore Andre Adams and Brendan Taylor).

On paper this current squad should not have been so far behind everyone else, but we were; so whose fault is it?

In a results business, if you don't get the results, should you really keep your job?

  14. That's a great summary Dave G, thanks. I really struggle to understand and, indeed, to accept that the chief coach who has presided over such an extended period of failure can be rewarded with a new and extended contract. It feels like a determined slight to members and lovers of the club. PM is surely not alone in culpability but his job description is performance on the field and here he has failed totally.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mick Newell is the Director of Cricket and signs Players / agrees new Contracts - so the culpability has to rest with him. He is also managerially responsible to the Chief Executive. The fact that the Director of Cricket and the Chief Executive are generally accepted to be in a romantic relationship I continue to feel is utterly unacceptable from a management perspective - he ought not to be responsible to her managerially - a situation that the Committee in the past agreed with - SO, by a process of 'forensic' analysis the ultimate blame / culpability has to rest with the Committee and its Chairman inparticular.

  16. Let's look at Moores' record year by year:

In 2015, we rose from bottom to third in Div 1 when PM was engaged as a coaching consultant for the second half of the season.
In 2016, he was again a coaching consultant and we were relegated from Div 1, winning 1 and losing 9 out of 16 games.
In 2017, when PM took over as head coach, we were promoted from Div 2 with 7 wins and 2 defeats - but we nearly blew it at the end and would not have been promoted if Northants had not been docked 5 points for a slow over rate in their game against us.
In 2018, back in Div 1, we won 4 out of the first 7 games but failed to win any of the last 7, losing 5, and would have been relegated if Lancs had not been docked a point for a slow over rate.
In 2019, the winless sequence was continued, with a further 10 defeats out of 14 games.

All of the 15 defeats in the 21-game winless run have been by very large margins: 4 by an innings and 100+ runs, 1 by an innings and < 100 runs, 7 by between 132 and 285 runs and 3 by 8 wickets.

PM's career record as a coach in the Championship in Div 1 is now in the red: P142 W41 L48 D53 (by comparison, his record in Div 2 is P62 W27 L12 D23).

Were it not for the club's white-ball success (or relative success) during his time here, the picture would look very bleak indeed and many counties might well not have persevered with their coach with this sort of record.

Philip (above) says the culpability resides with the Director of Cricket. Overall, that is true, but in terms of recruitment the DoC has previously made it clear that recruitment initiatives come from PM and the other coaches and are discussed and then acted on by the DoC. In terms of coaching and getting the best out of players, the direct responsibility lies with PM. It is the failures in that respect that are equally worrying.

    1. Mick has consistently stated that Peter identifies the players that he wants and then Mick's role is to go and get their signatures on the dotted line. Who or how many of those names on Peter's wish list haven't been secured by Mick is another matter.

Good analysis of PM's Notts CV DJP.

  17. Soory to disagree - but within a Business Model failure would be dealt with by Manager, the CEO and the Board. Employees would have targets set and if they failed to reach them they would be officially warned and if no improvement duly dismissed. Mick Newell IS the Director of Cricket, Lisa Pursehouse if the CEO and his direct Line Manager and the Committee are the Board - accountability and responsibility rest with those persons occupying those positions.

  18. With the advent of the Hundred, there will be a role for DofC for the Trent Rockets in the offing. PM could step-up to be DofC of Notts CCC, one of Mick's pals could come in and be DofC for the Rockets and MN could be promoted to D of Ds of C. Nepotism and reward for failure in a new structure which LP would surely approve of and preside over.

  21. There are serious matters I feel around offering Peter Moores the 2-year Contract. 'Anon 19th October' above helpfully provides a more detailed synopsis of his achievements - or relative lack of them. Faced with these hard facts anyone would have to say that he has not been successful. He MAY be regarded as a 'good' Coach and the players may well like him BUT is he delivering success? - I think that the answer has to be no. Whilst he has offered explanations at both Committee and Members Forums there has to now be a clear timescale set for seeing significant improvements - where are the REAL difficulties within the Club? Are the Coaches up to the task? Why have we not had a Batting Coach? Is Mick Newell signing players without full information about them? I urge Members to think long and hard as to who they vote for in the 2020 Committee Elections - is it time to see what some completely new faces can bring?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I,for one, will need help with that long, hard thinking Philip as I don't or won't know the characters that will be offered. Could those of you who are more in the know provide a commentary?
