Notts Miss Out on Kolpak Deal

According to the Evening Post, Notts have missed out on signing Dwaine Pretorius, 30 year old South African, on a Kolpak deal after his Test career took on a new lease of life on Boxing Day.

The deal was apparently done until the player had a change of heart because of discussions of a potential Test recall (which came into fruition yesterday).

  1. Yes, heard Hussain talking about it earlier. Sounded like the deal wa done and dusted......and then new SA supremo Graham Smith intervened. Presumably has guaranteed him his place ? Especially as Vernon Phillander is shortly to retire. Looks like DoC has changed his noble stance on the dreaded Kolpak however. It's a bit hard to compete without them Mick when most other teams are signing them. Still don't worry, we've got a nice stint in Div 2 to look forward to.

  2. Double standards from Smith. Always disliked the trumped up cack hander.

  3. Pretorius is no world beater, and Notts would not have entertained signing someone like him 12 months ago. Unfortunately, we are desperate for bowlers, even medium pacers like him , it would appear.

Shows ,what a mess Newell and co have created by poor managerial decisions

    1. Agreed Mark, it does show the depth to which Newell has navigated the club and its playing squad to. Rebuilding in Div 2 is what we've got to do; getting in players with potential, that are dedicated to Notts CCC and not to the Trent Wallets. We might have to spread the net beyond Lincolnshire to find that potential however.

    2. 1 innings for Northamptonshire in 2019 - scored 111, bowled in 2 innings - BB 1-21

  4. As a sort of related point, is Kolpak done for after 31st Jan ? If so do existing Kolpak contracts still stand ?

    1. We're in the transition period once Boris drives the bus out of Euro-tunnel, plugs the pin and throws the grenade behind him. So who knows what status these Kolpak deals will have in 12 months time.

  6. Not sure whether that link will work but it is saying that kolpak contracts are unlikely to last beyond 2021.

  7. Whatever the outcome with kolpak, You would have to say that its disappearance will help focus clubs minds on developing their own players and not scouring the african sub-continent.

Thankfully because of Notts recent lack of involvement with kolpak, It will affect them far less than some clubs who must now be wondering how to replace the holes in their squad's...

    1. Then there's the players that hold EU passports as well as Australian/South African etc passports

    2. Stable door shut and the horsey has bolted(literally to Lancy in one case). The time for Teflon coated Myopic Mick to act was when we lost Brendan Taylor to coincide with a lot of senior top class experienced players retiring for different reasons. To think we could struggle through whilst other counties drafted some in was utterly ridiculous.we were never on a level playing field, which is even more staggering when he signed Andre Adams who carried the bowling so brilliantly for several seasons. Wish I was so well paid whilst making such awful decisions on recruitment. You could almost think he was close to the CEO.

    3. Ridiculous SJ, how would the Notts Committee with our honourable Chair permit such a conflict of interest?

  8. Our winter recruitment thus far, consists of two county discards and an overseas bowler not favoured by our east Midlands neighbour.
This hardly bodes well for our prospects for the forthcoming season.

There was a time, when Trent Bridge was a favoured home for both county and international players. Sadly this is no longer the case. I wonder why.

Newell has compounded the issue by mistakingly, allowing Coughlan to leave when the player should have honoured his contract.

Bowling wise , the club are in a real pickle unless they can unearth another South African who is prepared to soldier away in 3 formats over a long English season, as it would be unfair to expect young James and Evison to fill the void in the short term. and Blatherwick has yet to show that he is up to the job, and as for Chappel, less said the better.

Maybe we will end up searching for another Charlie Shreck in the minor counties, or borrowing a couple of seamers from Surreys extensive collection, on season loans.

Lets hope Mick has a plan, but don't bank on it.

  9. The Notts CCC 4 day side next year hardly looks inspiring .We can only hope one or two of the lesser players improve rapidly and start producing the goods .More players than usual will be given a chance to shine in the 4 day game and 50 over Comp . If you are given a chance then you have to grab it with both hands .
Compared to years ago , the potential financial rewards in cricket have been transformed . I suppose that most Test players on official contracts can easily earn £500.000 a year all in .Five good years and you can retire ? Nice work if you can get it (or are good enough)
So the Notts 4 day side for 2020 looks very light on "names" and "stars" but that could change if the dedication and effort is made together with top quality coaching and encouragement is provided .
Which Notts player will emerge from the pack and score 900/1000 runs or take 75+ wickets ?
