The best fast bowler, who could also bat as well, that's ever bowled a ball in my opinion, Richard Hadlee.
ReplyDeleteThe above pic is of the 1983 squad, but thinking back to the whole of the 80s, I would have agree with SJ, Sir Richard.
ReplyDeleteRichard Hadlee
ReplyDeleteI saw him bowl a superb spell to Ian Botham in a test at Lord’s in 1983. Botham scored a very studious half century which showed how underrated he was technically as a batsmen; not just a slogger at all. It wouldn’t appeal to the modern day bish bash supporter but the crowd watched enraptured.
ReplyDeleteHadlee undeservedly went wicketless in that spell but he always had the appreciation that at times, Test match cricket was about bowling long great spells unrewarded; patience and the wickets would come.
The previous time I had seen him live in test cricket was at Trent Bridge in 1973 when he was very raw and I would’ve never have predicted that he would become the all-time great that he did.
Every vote for Hadlee so far and I'm not going to break ranks. Didn't just move it a lot both ways, he had great control of that movement and relentless accuracy. Beautiful run up and a nice appeal too. And dangerous batting around no. 7.
ReplyDelete92% of a vote on Twitter made Richard Hadlee their favourite too
ReplyDeleteA vote here for Clive. Richard and Derek magnificent, as Tim and Chris, Bruce, the Kevins etc. But Ricey had started our climb back from annual humiliation and captained us to 2 Championship titles, our first one day trophy and 3 Lord's finals in the decade. Just look at his runs and batting average every season from 1980 to 1987. Plenty of wickets and catches too. We finished 3rd in 1980 1st in 81 and 87 and 2nd in 84 in the CC. Prior to 1980 our best finish in 5 decades was 4th in 1968
