Durham Vitality T20 Blast at Chester le Street Win

OUTLAWS WIN ON THE ROAD AGAIN

On a sunny evening at the Riverside, Notts made it back to back T20 wins with a 13 run over Durham, the backbone of the victory was a 126 run third wicket stand in 13 overs between Alex Hales (96 not out off 54 balls with 10 fours and four sixes) and Ben Duckett. Hales who batted throughout was only denied a century through failing to hit two slower ball bouncers from the last two balls of the innings bowled by Ben Raine. The left and right handed contribution was hard for the Durham bowlers to contain. Hales sheer brute force versus Duckett's innovative shots. Notts 195 for five off 20 overs a challenging total on a wicket where batsmen found it hard to time the ball once it had lost its hardness. Bedingham and Clark raced to 73 in 5.5 overs as Ball went for 28 in his first two overs. It was Ball though that made the crucial breakthrough as Notts took 3 wickets in 8 balls. Clark (39) being caught by the diving Trego at cover. Carter took two wickets in an over, Raine stumped and Durham skipper Cameron Bancroft tamely caught and bowled. Eckersley and Burnham soon followed to boundary catches. Finally danger man Bedlingham, the man that Notts failed to spot under their noses at Plumtree, was bowled by Patel for a 42 ball 65, 124 for 6 off 13.4 overs. Durham required a further 62, but despite having no tail with Borthwick as last man, they fell 13 runs short as Fletcher bowled an outstanding 19th over which went for four. Carter who bowled overs 16 and 18 took three wickets for 43.

A good crowd attended, Durham being much more relaxed to the Covid regulations. Tickets available on the day of the game, choose your own seats, no social distancing in toilets and all the indoor members facilities opened along with many outside food outlets. They therefore would have made considerably more money per head than their counterparts at Trent Bridge.

Powerplay

Notts won the toss and elected to bat. Duckett returned for James. Clarke cover drove the first ball from Trevaskis for four, seven off the over. Clarke (18) hit Potts (Finchale End) for three successive fours but fell caught behind by the juggling Eckersley next ball, 19 for one. Trego fell leg before to Coughlin for one, 19 for 2. MAG's Memo from CLS

Hales and Duckett won it.

Long boundaries.

Harder to get away once ball was soft.

Geordies don't do social distancing.

Games are coming every few days with little time for reflection or to review strategies, however in a 2nd XI fixture against Leicester at Kibworth, on Monday - Sol Budinger has been employed batting at 4, after the powerplay rather than his pinch-hitting opener role (he also randomly had a bowl in the powerplay and completed a full compliment of 4 overs), Brett Hutton made a rare appearance and Zak Chappell (but did not bowl) made a return to playing after several weeks of anonymity.

Is Ben Duckett stuck in Boris Johnson isolation or not?

  1. We have not heard re Ben. officially.

This match and Friday pretty crucial, I think we need to win at least one of them.

  2. Has the time come I wonder for that wonderful all round cricketer Samit Patel to step aside and let someone younger and fitter take his place? Notts have several aging warriors who might be struggling to perform with every ball bowled and every ball received. The Blast games are coming thick and fast this year- not much time to rest old bodies.( in cricket terms anyway)

  3. Really good game of cricket - played in the right spirit with plenty of top skill on show and the Durham weather was as ever ( wall to wall sunshine
    Well played Notts .
But it looks like they need to score 200 to stand a decent chance of winning each game

  4. Scores are high again, after a period when they came down.

Great to see Alex and Ben in form.

Still think there should be one change in the team, but not going to go on about it !

  5. Thanks for the great report again MAG. For those stuck at home watching the live stream - I would rate Durham TV ** 2 stars. Most of the streaming was from the mid wicket camera owing to sunshine from behind the wicket but what about the camera at the western end? Also, half an over was missed because they cut to showing a very mixed/strange household sitting together (students?) where one of them was a right show-off drinking a bottle of water (?) and dancing simultaneously - a natural Geordie multitasker. Very weird! But it was free :)
