Somerset Royal London One Day Cup at Welbeck CC No Result

WELBECK WASHED-OUT

A thoroughly miserable day at Welbeck, where the biggest surprise was that there was any play took atall. Following a wet night and early morning, a dire weather forecast had been predicted, but play got under on time at 1100 with Somerset winning the tossand electing to bowl in front of around 500 spectators. Lyndon James was brought back in to the line-up with Hameed joining the England squad at Loughborough.

Sonny Baker (Marquee End) and Ben Green (Scoreboard End) opened the bowling on a sluggish wicket with a wet, slow outfield. In the second over, Budinger (2),having gone aerial the ball before, was caught at mid off by Drissell off Green, 6 for 1. In the 7th over, Baker had Trego leg before for 13, the Notts skipper clearly unhappy with the decision, 23 for 2. Slater and Montgomery slowly accumulated runs. Aldridge replaced Somerset skipper Green in the 10thover and slow left-armer Lewis Goldsworthy came on in the following over. Light rain started to fall, as reports of a deluge in Nottingham filtered through. Appropriately, former Gloucester off-spinner George Drissel came on in the 16th over. He bowled three tidy overs. There was just time for debutant Ned Leonard, formerly of Millfield School and a Devon player, to bowl one over of right-arm medium pace, but then the rain got heavier, and play was halted at 1216 with Notts 92 for 2 off 21 overs with Slater on 42 and Montgomery on 31. Only six boundaries had been hit throughout the 76 minutes of play. The players neverreturned. The rain kept coming in pulses and play was formally abandoned at1550. Both teams took a point apiece. Leicestershire visit the ground on Sunday, where we hope that all the home clubs great efforts will be rewarded with an uninterrupted encounter. MAG

Trent Bridge are calling this game part one of the Welbeck Weekender and so they ought be careful before they get accused of trying to sell the event instead of burying it!

Somerset have had a different approach, being able to play home fixtures at their Taunton HQ, games there have had larger numbers of spectators and the matches have been accompanied by the usual razzamatazz and music - something that I've not picked-up on other streams from other grounds.

Notts' bowlers took a pounding at Guildford so a tweak there will possibly be necessary. The wheels definitely fell off the wagon on Tuesday and I suspect veteren and captain Peter Trego is still looking for at least a couple of them today on Thursday. If Pettman or Barber are bringing anything to the Nottinghamshire squad, now might be the opportunity to let them shine as it's usually the case that a seamer or two does get some reward at Welbeck. Notts will be without Haseeb Hameed who will have joined the England set-up at Loughborough.

Somerset, hit by the Hundred draft disease much like Notts, have it appears found a few new gems and it will be interesting to see how they perform away from their Taunton home at the electricity pylon-adorned John Fretwell Complex. Sonny Baker, RFM Devonian 18 year old, looked composed at the death yesterday.

In these Covid-fear stricken times and with a mixed weather forecast on Friday, it's doubtful the crowd numbers will be close to the 4.6K that watched Outlaws beat Derbyshire in 2016 but the usually magnificent cake stall is advertised as being there, so that is sure to add a few thousand calories if not spectators and inches to a few waistlines.

A long, very long journey with a bumpy landing.

  3. Yes some pretty shocking bowling at Guildford after a great start before the rain. Credit to the batters for getting within sight but it was only ever on if Budinger or Trego or preferably both got a big score and as you say Trego was pretty unlucky to get one of only two balls that deviated off straight all day ( Montgomery's first ball being the other). That was two more than did anything at Edgbaston. Bad days like that happen but giving away a no ball for not having your fielders in the right place doesn't so they owe us one for that even if you know it's not your day when you do that to a ball that otherwise takes a wicket.

  4. Anyone still think the 100 Ball will not catch on ? Tonight at Lords , over 27,000 attendance to see the Trent Rockets.
Its not cheap to see the games but folk are prepared to shell out.
ECB will be cock a hoop with so many young families there. That was the new target audience.

  5. Just a quick update for those in self denial about the success so far of the 100 Baller .The preceding game to day involving Trent Rockets women attracted a record crowd ( for females) of 12,500.
Finally a last word on the mens game just finished at 9.20 pm and won by Trent Rockets . An entertaining tight game that went to the last over , in fact to the final two balls . Rockets win again - thats 3 wins out of 3.
Good luck to the Notts lads at Welbeck tomorrow- lets hope the weather allows a good game.

  6. Thanks for the 100 report. To be honest I wouldn’t of had time to watch it. I spent all day on you tube; first at Scarborough where Gloucestershire pulled off a grandstand finish to beat Durham, then down to Chelmsford to see Worcestershire trounce Essex.

  7. Yes Fox Road - there is much live streaming to watch at the moment on top of Sky and BBC cricket Cover
    PS
How long before Clubs start charging for the currently " free" live stream?

  8. Adverts appear on the oval feed I think. Somerset were sponsored and a logo of a local company on the screen, so not long, it’s inevitable, enjoy it while it lasts.abandoned at Welbeck, so I’m down at a sunny hove at the moment.perhaps next year we will be unrestricted and out and about more .

  9. Having to buy tickets in advance for games like this does not appeal to the supporter who wishes to make his mind up on the morning of the match - depending on the weather forecast.
At Derby now you can pay on the day , just turn up and gain entry and then sit where you like in the ground and change seats for a different view of the play ( except Members areas)
Why cant Notts do the same with games that are poorly attended?

  10. You can pay on the door at Welbeck

Notts members do NOT have to buy tickets in advance. The club is requesting that obtain a free ticket in advance so the numbers can gauged more accurately of people attending. This can be done quite easily online in about 5 minutes or calling the ticket office in advance who will gladly post out a ticket to members unable to access the online systems. Non members have always had to buy tickets for these games anyway so there's no real difference in reality. If you're a member and chose not to go on the day then it makes no difference as it's included in your membership. It would be helpful if people posting could at least get their information correct especially if they are implying that Notts are making this system arduous which they clearly are not.

    1. If you are a member, couldn't you just so up on the day if tickets are available on the gate, as they were yesterday? No booking, no printing off or £3 postal charge if you don't have access to a printer (because the club's scanners don't work more often than not direct from a screen) necessary - just like the old days when the membership card would give you the access.

Yesterday stewards didn't scan anyone in or out at the car park entrance (ticket nor paper print-off nor screen).

  12. I still say the cumbersomec advance request for tickets is pretty off putting for members. Look at the very poor gate at Welbeck two days ago . Folk are voting with their feet . I know the weather forecast was not good but you would expect far in excess of 1,000 spectators on the day to make it worthwhile for Welbeck. .
A Notts Membership card should be sufficient to get you into the game without all the computer hassle that is alien to a lot of older members .
Having to book admission in advance is not the way forward for many fans . Just ask around!
