Day 3
DURHAM CAPITULATE TO GIVE NOTTS A DRAMATIC WIN
after Ben Slater doubles his ton
An unbelievable day by the Riverside, after two wicketless sessions yesterday 234 runs were scored and 16 wickets were lost in 75.5 madcap overs. Notts who started the day at 371 for 3, eventually declared on 488 for 9, led by a magnificent unbeaten 225 not out by Ben Slater. Durham then dramatically collapsed to 117 all-out in 33.5 overs as Notts won by an innings and 141 runs with a day to spare and went top of the Division 2 table.
Straight away it was apparent that the pitch had changed overnight.
Off the second delivery of the day, James was dropped on 105 off second slip by Borthwick off Potts (Finchale End) to a ball that shot up . In the 118th over, James (108 off 223 balls, 13x4) lost his middle stump to a ball from Potts that kept low, 375 for 4. A four through backward point off Potts in the 122nd over saw Slater pass his career best score of 172. In the 124th over,Mullaney (5) shuffling across his crease was lbw to Raine (Finchale End), 391 for 5. Three balls later, Moores, not getting forward, was bowled by a subterranean delivery from Raine 391 for 6. In the 126th over, Patterson-White became Raine's third victim, leg before for 1, 395 for 7. The left hander has been out all four times this season to leg before decisions. With the pitch now with uneven bounce, run scoring proved very difficult in the morning, Notts only adding 58 runs for the loss of four wickets getting to lunch on 429 for 7 off 139 overs with Slater on 195 and Pattinson on 18. The two had steadied the ship adding 34 in the last 13 overs before the interval.
Slater and Pattinson accelerated after the interval. In the 143rd over, a single for Slater off Drissell got the left hander to 200 off 415 balls. It was the first championship double hundred since Alex Hales at Derby in August 2017. Potts, by far the most impressive Durham bowler picked up a five wicket bag when bowling Pattinson for a very useful 37 off 64 balls (5x4). The eighth wicket had added 74 runs in 22 overs. Fletcher(1) lost his middle stump to Potts, 475 for 9. Notts declared at 1440 on 488 for 9 off 153 overs with Slater on 225 off 445 balls (22x4,1x6) and Paterson on 7. Potts 6 for 107 and Raine 3 for 102. The quality of Slater's innings can be gauged by what happened in the following three hours. It was apparent that the ball at times was keeping very low from the Finchale End.
Fletcher picked up a wicket with the fifth delivery of the innings Jones (4) , plumb leg before, 4 for 1. Pattinson (Lumley End) bowled an eventful first over, opening up with successive no balls and then Petersen edged him for a leg side four. Paterson replaced Fletcher for the seventh over. In the eighth over Keegan Petersen was leg before to Pattinson, the ninth wicket to fall in the day but the first from the Lumley End, 47 for 2. The Durham 50 came up in the 9th over via an off side boundary by Dickson off Paterson. Dane Paterson got one to keep low and Dickson was leg before for 19, 61 for 3 in the 13th over. Bedingham inside edged Paterson on to his pad and Hameed took the catch at short mid wicket, 73 for 4 in the 15th over. This wicket was the start of a dramatic collapsed by the home side. Fletcher came on for Pattinson for the next over from the Lumley End. Eckersley (0) shouldered arms to the ebullient Bulwell Bomber and lost his off stump, 78 for 5 in the 18th over. Patterson-White bowled the 19th over. Durham getting to tea at 1633 on 85 for 5 off 20 overs with Borthwick on 14 and Raine on 2.
Durham only lasted 54 minutes after tea as they surrendered meekly. Fletcher (Lumley End) had Raine leg before to 4, 94 for 6 in the 26th over. Drissell became the seventh wicket to fall with the score on 113 as he edged Patterson-White to Mullaney at first slip. Pattinson now bowling at the fastest we have seen in 2022 returned for Fletcher and had Potts (1) caught behind off his fourth ball, 114 for 8. Ollie Gibson bagged a pair losing his off stump to Patterson-White, 117 for 9. Then at 1748 Pattinson had Borthwick (25) caught at mid wicket by Patterson-White to cue mass celebrations. Durham 117 all out off 33.5 overs, Pattinson 3 for 34, Fletcher 3 for 46, Paterson 2 for 22 and Patterson-White with the economical figures of 8 4 7 2. The wicket by the end was showing uneven bounce at both ends, changing dramatically over the previous 24 hours. Crucially though, the Notts bowlers bent their backs much more than their Durham counterparts and had gained a massive innings and 141 runs victory. Mr Extras top scored with 32 swelled by 24 no balls. The 12 no balls being spread over three bowlers Pattinson 5 , Fletcher 4 and Paterson 3.

Day 2
DURHAM "CHURNED"
...as Ben Slater bats all day unbeaten
Special congratulations to Lyndon James on his maiden first class century
Ben Slater (164no) and Lyndon James (105no) shared an unbroken fourth wicket partnership of 216 at sunny but blustery Chester--le-Street as Notts took control of the championship contest versus Durham, leading by 141 runs with seven wickets first innings still standing.Slater and Hameed batted for five overs until in the 20th over, Hameed (33) was leg before to Potts (Finchale End), 60 for 1. Slater and Duckett batted circumspectly as the Notts 100 was achieved in the 31st over. The following over Slater got to his 50 with a single off Shotley Bridge youngster, Gibson, it took 97 balls. Duckett had a stroke of luck with a mistimed lofted drive off Drissell which skied to no man's land. Next over despite the bright sunshine we had Raine (Lumley End) and Drissell bowling in tandem! A pulled four for Duckett off Potts got him to 50 off 67 balls, in same over (41st) Notts reached 150. Then unexpectedly Duckett (54) played on to Potts , 153 for 2 in the 43rd over. On the stroke of lunch, Clarke (1) played a poor shot against Potts to be caught at slip by Bedingham, Notts 155 for 3 off 44.2 overs at lunch Slater 60 not out, all three wickets to Potts.
Slater and James scored 121 off 34.4 overs in the middle session. The Notts 200 came up in the 56th over. An under-edged single by Slater off Drissell brought up his ton off 186 balls. After struggling so far in 2022, it was very much the breakthrough innings for the Bolsover man. In the off spinner's following over a scampered single by James saw him to 50 off 76 balls. Borthwick brought himself ahead of tea and kept it tight (5 1 7 0). Notts at the interval 276 for 3 off 79 overs with Slater on 113 and James on 68. They had made untroubled progress on a very slow pitch
The final session once again proved fruitless for the home attack as Notts added a further 95 in 32 overs without losing a wicket. The new ball was taken by Rushworth and Potts at 276 for 3 off 80 overs. In the 86th over, Slater pulled Potts for six, the only time the ropes have been cleared during the match. The Notts 300 was achieved in the 88th over. Slater got to a Notts best score of 143 with a single of Drissell in the 96th over then he reached 150 in 298 balls. The Notts 350 came up in the 106th over via a single for Slater off Borthwick. A three for James off Borthwick started of mass celebrations as he achieved his maiden first class hundred. Notts failed to achieve maximum batting points as they stood at 370 for 6 at 110 overs, they added a further single before stumps were drawn at 1812. Slater and James batted sensibly as an unthreatening attack on a comatose survive. Their unbroken stand is the largest 4th wicket stand for Notts v Durham beating the 192 that Titch Taylor and Samit Patel added at Trent Bridge in 2014.
Expect Notts to bat for at least a session tomorrow to build up a sizeable lead, but with the bounce getting lower and the pace getting slower, it will be hard work to prize out 10 Durham batsmen on such a dead surface. MAG
Day 1
NOTTS HAVE THE BETTER OF DAY ONE
Patterson-White 5-fer the headline performance
A fine day for Notts at sunny Durham today. After Durham got off to good start reaching 66 for 0, Notts steadily chipped away at the Durham batting, bowling them out for 230 all out. Notts closed on 50 for 0 off 15 overs.Notts won the toss and put Durham in, James and Fletcher returned for Evison (sore foot) and Hutton (rested). Fletcher (Finchale End) and Pattinson opened the bowling. Dickson survived a confident lbw shout early doors from Pattinson. Jones hit three fours in Fletcher's third over. Fletcher after a steady opening six over spell was replaced by Paterson. A boundary for Dickson off Paterson brought up the Durham 50 in the 15th over. James came on for the out of sorts Pattinson who had bowled 5 no balls in his opening 7 overs. Out of nothing, Jones (22) went for a pull shot against a short ball from Paterson and only succeeded in gloving the ball to Moores, 66 for 1 in the 19th over. James bowled 5 overs in his spell and then Fletcher changed to the Lumley End. Patterson-White bowled the following over the Finchale End, Dickson getting a single to reach his 50 off 90 balls. This was the start of continuous 27 over spell for the Sunderland born player. On the stroke of lunch Dickson (54) was adjudged leg before to Fletcher, the ball veering towards leg. Durham 96 for 2 off 27.4 overs at the interval. The diminutive Keegan Petersen 3 not out.
In the 33rd over, Petersen (5) was leg before to Patterson-White, 106 for three. In his next over, Patterson-White bagged skipper Borthwick (8) caught at the second attempt by Mullaney at slip, 107 for 4. Paterson replaced Fletcher for the 40th over. A cracking ball ftom Paterson removed Bedingham (14) who edged a forward defensive shot to Moores, 135 for 5 in the 43rd over. Eckersley survived a stumping chance off Patterson-White when 23. In the following over, Eckersley was dropped on 26 by Duckett at second slip diving to his left off Pattinson. Trevaskis twice got hit on the helmet by Pattinson and retired hurt on 15 with Durham on 167 for 5 off 59.1 overs. Eckersley (31) was comprehensively bowled losing his off stump to Pattinson, 174 for 6 in the 62nd over. Pattinson bowled with more better rhythm today, but had a problem with overstepping, bowling eight no balls in his 15 overs. Durham got to tea on 187 for 6 off 64 overs with Raine on 12 and Potts on 1.
After tea. Potts (10) pulled a delivery from Paterson straight to James on the deep square leg ropes. Drissell (8), the former Somerset and Gloucester spinner, came to the crease as a concussion substitute for Trevaskis and was leg before to a delivery that kept low from Patterson-White, 219 for 8 after 75 overs. Gibson, the lasted six balls, before becoming Patterson-White's fourth victim, leg before for 0, 223 for 9. Raine (36) was the last wicket to fall caught low down at deep mid wicket by Clarke off Patterson-White. Durham 230 all out. Patterson-White was outstanding once more with figures of 26.4 5 54 5, he was well supported by Dane Paterson 17 3 53 3.
Notts had 15 overs to bat in the evening sunshine and made relatively untroubled progress to reach 50 for 0 with Hameed and Slater both on 23. Durham using three bowlers Rushworth bowling 8 overs from the Lumley End, and five overs from Potts and three overs from Raine from the Finchale End. MAG
- minor buffering
- lost pictures on at least two occasions
- Youtube channel went missing post lunch on day 2 - NV live remained.
- attempted replays that showed nothing other than the two seconds after action they were trying to replay - never corrected this through the game- it was like no one was checking their own output, which can't have been the case as they were fully aware of the sun and its effect on the pictures from one of the ends and had made arrangements with a secondary camera at that end or switched to the camera at the other end once the batsman had played his shot.
- commentary quiet (though some might view that as a positive)
- Commentary not sync'ed for start of Day 1 for several overs.
- effects mic picking up some loud mouth that shouted 3-4 times an over, when the bowler was releasing the ball
- at least it was there most of the time and it cost nowt to watch!
Secret Squirrel's traveling squad:
I have read that ECB freed Stuart Broad to play in this match, but he declined to.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if this is true ?
That needs explaining.
ReplyDeleteTrue, very happy for Liam !
ReplyDeletePre season monty wrote an article running the rule over the county championship spinners and predicted an England call up for Liam sooner rather than later. I dare say he knows more about it than I do.
ReplyDeleteI don't really want England to damage any more of our players. Unless there is a total revolution of our national team in terms of it's set up, culture and spirit I think it best that the limes of Liam and Ben stay at home. Mr Key may be a start but there is an awful long way to go.
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant win by the lads. Very well done indeed. Great to see Patto amongst the wickets in this game. Still don’t think he’s anywhere near the bowler we first had in 2017 but shows he can still provide the spearhead of our attack. Perhaps it’s just a rhythm thing and he will get better and better for us. Now we’ve got selection dilemma as the Golden Boy is back for a few games according to Mr. B on the audio
ReplyDeleteAt least we can rotate the seamers with Bally getting close to fitness and having a run out in the 2s
Hoping England leave our lads alone but at least we’ve got Joey Evison who could bat top 6 as a pure batter in my opinion or lower down as an all rounder
Good to see the real and deserved Champions of last season winning 2 out of 3. Hoping we get on a roll and get stronger and stronger with our momentum
Yes great win and roll on next week.
ReplyDeleteGood idea rating the live streams. The Sussex one , though Adrian was pleased with it was not good, agree with your assessment of Durham . I went up and down the country all day yesterday taking in games till they finished.( grace road , the oval , Old Trafford and wantage road) easy to put the boot in on Trent Bridge at times but our coverage is one of the best( apart from welbeck last year which was unwatchable)
