Derbyshire Falcons Vitality T20 Blast at County Ground, Derby Win

HALES BOMBARDMENT GETS OUTLAWS BACK ON TRACK

A truly outstanding innings from Alex Hales ensured Notts kept the bragging rights over their local neighbours at Notts defeated Derbyshire by 7 wickets with 17 balls to spare at a cold and blustery County Ground.

Notts won the toss and inserted Derbyshire and brought in Harrison and Pattinson (competition debut) and out went Fletcher and Paterson. Despite the sunshine, most spectators were wrapped up in coats as there was a strong easterly breeze blowing. The outfield was vast and the wicket was typical of the County Ground with the ball much harder to strike towards the end of the innings.

Matt Carter bowled the opening over from the Racecourse End, two off the first over. Ball bowled the 2nd over, seven off the over including a cover driven four for Masood. Reece hit a legside 4 off Carter, 15 for 0 off 3 overs. Pattinson was ramped for 6 by Reece and the left hander followed it up with a mid-wicket boundary and the last ball of the over was smashed for six over cow corner, 20 off the over including two leg byes and a wide. Masood hit Carter (4-0-36-0) to the cover ropes twice in the 5th over , 11 off the over. Masood hit Ball for consecutive boundaries through (midwicket and backward square leg. Then off the last delivery of the powerplay, Masood hit another boundary, Derbyshire 60 for 0.

Harrison and Patel ensured the run rate lowered. Masood (33 off 23 balls) making room was bowled by Harrison, 61 for 1. 4 off the 7th over. Reece (27 off 19 balls) was stumped by Moores off Patel, 67 for 2. Facing his first ball, Du Plooy reverse swept Patel for 4, eight off the 8th over. Harrison went for 5 in the 9th over. Patel bowled the 10th over, Derbyshire 84 for 2.

Pattinson returned and conceded 5 off the 11th over and Mullaney went for 6 in the following over. Du Plooy hit an offside boundary off Harrison, 106 for 2 off 13 overs. Harrison (3-0-19-1) was not given a 4th over. Madsen hit Carter for two sixes off first and third balls of the 14th over, 17 off the over. Patel conceded 7 off the 15th over. Madsen lofted Mullaney to the mid-wicket boundary and then du Plooy was survived an easy stumping chance when on 47 off Mullaney (2-0-16-0), 10 off the over. Du Plooy got to 50 off 33 balls but was run out next ball going for a single by Christian at extra cover. Du Plooy out for 51 off 34 balls (3x4,1x6), 144 for 3. The 3rd wicket had added 77 in 9 overs, four runs off the 17th over bowled by Patel (4-0-25-1). Madsen hit Ball for three consecutive 4’s (long off, straight and wide long leg). Derbyshire 158 for 3 off 17.4 overs.

Notts fought back well in the closing stages as Derbyshire lost 7 wickets for 20 runs during the last 14 deliveries of the innings. Ball comprehensively bowled Madsen via a Yorker for 40 off 30 deliveries, 158 for 4. Ball conceded 15 in the 18th over. Came hit Pattinson for six over square leg and then ramped him for four. Came (11) fell off the third ball skying to Carter at short third man, 169 for 5. Guest (5) hit Pattinson for 4 through mid-on and then next ball Pattinson (3-0-38-2) bowled a Yorker on the base of his off stump, 174 for 6 off 19 overs. Ball bowled the last over, McKiernan (1) was caught by Pattinson on the backward point ropes, 174 for 7. Next ball Watt lost his off stump to depart for a golden duck. Conners got two off the hat trick ball. Moores took a leaping catch as Ball made it 3 wickets in 4 balls as Conners departed for 2. Scrimshaw took a single off the 5th ball and Kerr was run out by a direct Clarke throw from the boundary to Ball (4-0-40-4) going for two off the last ball, 178 all out. The total if anything seemed slightly over par. The seamers had proved expensive although Notts ageing team had performed well in the vast outfield

Hales who had looked somewhat rusty in the opening games, hit form, as predicted, in spectacular fashion blasting the Derbyshire side to oblivion as 119 runs were added in the opening 8.3 overs with Clarke, to virtually single handily win the contest for Notts.

Clarke ramped Kerr (Racecourse End) for four off the last delivery of the opening over, 6 for 0. Hales hit consecutive fours off Conners through long leg and extra cover, 11 off the second over. Hales lofted slow left armer Watt for six over long leg and finished the over with a cover driven four, 31 for 0 off 3 overs. Hales smashed Scrimshaw for an offside four off his second delivery, next ball was a six over mid-wicket. The fifth ball went for four through third man, the sixth delivery was top edged towards the third man ropes , 20 off the over. Kerr was hit by Hales over wide mid-off, then next ball there was an offside four. Hales proving unstoppable had reached 50 off 18 balls. Clarke hit Kerr (2-0-24-0) for consecutive fours through mid-wicket and third man, 18 off the over. Conners returned and went for 26 in the 6th over. The first ball was straight driven for four by Hales. Hales then blasted a free hit for four through mid-wicket, then followed it with a further two boundaries (straight and through square leg). Hales finished the over with a six over extra cover. Notts 95 for 0 at the end of the powerplay.

Darkness was descending and the temperature plummeted; Hales hit McKiernan for consecutive sixes, a straight one and then one over mid-wicket, 16 off the 7th over. Watt conceded six off the 8th over. Clarke (25) was caught on the backward square leg ropes by Came off McKiernan , 119 for 1 off 8.3 overs. Duckett reverse swept McKiernan for four, eight off the ninth over. Scrimshaw returned and had Hales (91 off 33 balls, 12x4,5x6)  caught at long leg by McKiernan, the ball going into orbit, 125 for 2 off 9.1 overs. An outstanding effort from Hales, head and shoulders above any knock played by any other of the batsmen on the night. Notts took a further eight overs to obtain the remaining 54 runs to win the contest. Tenth over, Scrimshaw conceded just two off the over, Notts 127 for 2 at the halfway point.

Duckett hit Madsen for four through extra cover and swept him for four. Moores then hit Madsen to extra cover ropes, 13 off his solitary over. Duckett (20) hit Scrimshaw for four through mid-wicket but departed next ball caught low down on the square leg ropes by Came, 144 for 3, five off the 12th over. Watt conceded 5 off the 13th over. Scrimshaw (4-0-35-2) conceded 8 off the 14th over. McKiernan bowled the 15th over and went for seven. In the 16th over, Moores hit Watt (4-0-29-0) for four through wide third man, five dot balls followed. Moores (22 not out off 22 balls) hit McKiernan (4-0-40-1) for 6 over mid-wicket off the last delivery of the 17th over. The winning hit came off the next delivery as Patel lofted Conners (2.1-0-41-0) to the long on boundary (19 not out off 19 balls), Notts (178-3) winning by 7 wickets with 17 balls to spare and going up to fifth in the standings.

The night though had belonged to Hales. A potential close contest had been decided over a 33-ball Halestorm! MAG

Expect rolling acres at Derby, where sprite mobility in the field will be required, but don't expect Outlaws' team selections to reflect this...

The squad does need freshening up but where do you start?

  • Sol Budinger, with either big scores or little scores, he doesn't waste many deliveries.
  • Joey Evison is getting back to full fitness but isn't back bowling as yet
  • Calvin Harrison, unlucky to have missed out against Lightning on Tuesday.

Secret Squirrel is loyal to his inner-circle of players; if any changes do occur, it'll be someone like Ben Slater coming into the squad rather than a Fateh Singh or Dane Schadendorf. [it's Lyndon James as it happens!]

Teams do unravel quickly in T20, previously unbeaten Somerset last night a case in point: sailing along at the required 10 runs per over for 15 overs only at the death to lose 5 wickets for 2 runs over the space of a couple of overs and fall short by 47 runs. Notts on Tuesday, just unravelled at the start of their innings...

Is it age or injuries that are hampering Notts' seniors?

On the topic of seat booking, Derbyshire charge adults £25 for unreserved seating and £30 for reserved seating areas for this game, which represents a huge hike on other fixtures (supply and demand?).

The discontent at Trent Bridge re: reserved seating for members / non-members alike, is now being looked at by the written media (George Dobell and Elizabeth Ammon)

20 thousand at the Oval on Thursday evening...

  1. Whoever they pick, a big match for us
2 wins, a loss and a NR would be a decent start
Two defeats would put real pressure on.
Bold selections have worked in County Championship.
Harrison must return, at the very least.

  2. You’re not allowed any discontent at TB. It is forbidden territory and must be banned(or ignored).
T20 generally being a format for athleticism and younger players, would be good if Lord Budinger could be integrated in the team somehow. He has improved with his consistency over the last 18 months or so, playing for the stiffs. The problem is how can he be accommodated ? Of course, we could always get Duckett to keep wicket and you wonder what Mullaney’s role in t20 is these days and whether he can keep producing depending on how much he is likely to bowl in matches.so bringing the “Lord” in weakens this option in matches but it would be good to see if he can improve on last year, when it has to be said he looked a little out of his depth at times. But he’s a confident boy and is a very clean striker of the ball and ideally suited to t20 cricket

Assuming, Direby, like at DisGraceful Road, do push the boundaries out to give “Dad’s Army” the runaround in the outfield, would like to see the leg spinner, Calvin Harrison back in the side.
This is Derbys’ big game along the lines with Yorkshire Vikings but I don’t agree with charging more for these so called better category matches. Surely they should all be the same price. At least we are not doing that(yet)

  3. We need some energy in the field...

  4. Baz is back with a bang. He may have been undercooked, due to not playing for a while only he will really know, but not any more
An incredible display of clean striking. Still don’t think anyone can touch him in t20 when he’s firing, not even Livingstone who is not as refined as Hales and more of a slogger albeit a very high quality one
Team selection may be limited assuming DC cannot bowl so difficult to integrate Lord Budinger at present?
Rate Scrimshaw, if he can stay fit and maintain his pace think he’s got a very bright future in white ball at least
All bowlers go the distance in the PP it doesn’t matter who you are but the top class lads then come back for the death overs
