Gloucestershire RLODC at Bristol Loss

NOTTS GET BURNT AT BRISTOL FURNACE

as experience tells as Bracey and Taylor make mincemeat of the Outlaws' bowling

A fifth wicket stand of 179 in 20 overs between James Bracey (104 not out off 93 balls) and Jack Taylor (95 off 55 balls, 10x4, 5x6) saw Gloucestershire to an easy five wicket victory at a boiling hot Bristol today.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat on a slow flat deck. Ben Martindale, son of former Notts batsman Duncan was making his first team debut coming into the Eleven in place of Liam Patterson-White who is currently playing with the England Lions. Notts were a bowler light and this had a major bearing on the outcome of the game. The fifth bowler turned out to be a three-way split between three batsmen viz: Montgomery, Budinger and Martindale and their combined analysis was 10-0-78-2. Eighteen-year-old slow left-armer Fatah Singh completely lost his control in the onslaught having figures of 6.4-0-69-1, finally having Taylor caught on the ropes going for his ton with the scores level.

Goodman (Pavilion End) and Warner bowled the opening 6 overs with Slater and Budinger making steady progress adding 34. Slow left armer Zafar Gohar came on in the 7th over. The 50 partnership came up in the 8th over via successive fours for Slater off Warner. Budinger hooked van Meekeren for 6 over long leg. Budinger hit two fours in the same over and was dropped on 32 in by the bowler in his follow through, 17 off the over. Notts 70 for 0 at the end of the powerplay.

Budinger hit Gohar 6 over square leg, but in the same over, Slater (34) mistimed a leg side hit off the spinner, and skied the ball to Dent at mid-on who took a good catch over his shoulder running towards the boundary, 77 for 1. Budinger then hit another boundary 12 off the 11th over. In the following over, Hameed (2) guided van Meekeren straight to Smith at third man, 84 for 2. Another wicket given away. Budinger reached his 50 off 33 balls with a single off Gohar in the 13th over. Budinger pulled van Meekeren for six over square leg and then an off-side boundary for Montgomery brought up the Notts 100 in the 14th over. Jack Taylor brought himself on for the 17th over and Montgomery (13) top edged a pull shot and was caught by keeper Bracey running in front of the batsman, 117 for 3 in the 17th over. Notts were losing their way somewhat.

Tom Smith made it an all-spin attack in the 18th over, Budinger smashing him for 6 over long on. Budinger pulled a long hop by Taylor for 6 over square leg. Budinger (89 off 56 balls, 7x4, 5x6) holed out to Harris on the wide long on boundary off Smith, 151 for 4 in the 22nd over. A career best score from Budinger. Martindale (1) lasted six deliveries before being caught and bowled by Taylor diving low to his left, 152 for 5 in the 23rd over. Singh was promoted up the order, presumably to retain a left and right hander combination at the wicket.

Van Meekeren returned and with his 6th ball had Singh (12) driving straight to Taylor at mid-off, 180 for 6 after 30 overs. Schadendorf (4) was caught behind by Bracey off Smith, 199 for 7 in the 34th over. James was bowled by Warner playing across the line for 47 off 64 balls (3x4), 216 for 8 in the 40th over. Notts had inexplicably lost eight wickets for 139 in 29 overs on the flat deck. A massive defeat looked on the cards.

Chappell and Hutton led a fightback adding 52 runs in 6 overs. Chappell launched Taylor for a straight six and then edged the next ball for 4 in the 43rd over. Chappell hit Taylor for 6 over mid-wicket to bring up the Notts 250 in the 45th over. In the same over, Chappell hit Taylor for 6 over long on, 16 off the over. Chappell (32 off 24 balls, 3x4, 2x6) holed out to Taylor at long off, van Meekeren the bowler, 268 for 9 in the 46th over. Paterson joined Hutton and a further 26 runs were added. Paterson pulled van Meekeren for six over square leg in the last over. Hutton (28) was run out by Taylor off the last delivery as Paterson (25 not out) attempted a two. Notts 294 all out off 50 overs. The innings had had an excellent start and fighting finish but a very indifferent middle, the end result was a total that seemed about 50 under par, particularly with Notts weak bowling line up. Spinners Smith (10 0 41 2) and Gohar (10 0 46 1) had done a good job keeping the runs down. The expensive van Meekeren had picked up 3-73 for 9 overs.

Gloucestershire with two overseas players in their side and with a side less depleted by 100 call ups were clear favourites as set off on their run chase. Chappell (Pavilion End) and Hutton opened the bowling. In the 4th over, Hutton got one to lift and found the edge of Dent's bat (7) and Schadendorf took the catch, 16 for 1. Paterson replaced Chappell for the 7th over. Wells (28) was caught at mid-wicket by Montgomery at the second attempt, the South African catching the ricochet, 55 for 2 after 11 overs. Singh came on in the 12th over from the Ashley Down End and conceded 11 and was immediately replaced by Montgomery. Budinger came on for an extremely expensive 17th over costing 17 including two separate no balls. Notts clearly had problems with fourth, never mind the fifth bowler.

Notts were desperate for a wicket and Harris (48 off 43 balls, 5x4, 1x6) chopped on to his own stumps off a Montgomery delivery, 111 for 3 off 18 overs. Chappell returned for the following over. In the 20th over, Montgomery picked up Ollie Price (2) caught low down by Hameed at mid-wicket, 115 for 4. Experienced pair Bracey and Taylor made mincemeat of the situation taking advantage of the easy pitch, older ball and some poor and inexperienced bowling.

Taylor hit his first two deliveries from Montgomery for four. Singh replaced Montgomery for the 22nd over, but he conceded a further 20 runs in 2 overs including 5 wides. In desperation Hameed turned to Martindale to bowl his medium pacers in the 25th over with Montgomery (7 0 48 2) coming back for the 26th over. A straight driven four by Bracey off Martindale (2 0 13 0) saw him 50 off 54 balls. Taylor hit Montgomery for a straight six. With the runs flowing freely against the occasional bowlers and the two batters now well set, Hameed was forced to bring back Paterson for the 29th over, but he conceded 11 off the over. The Gloucestershire 200 came up in the 30th over via a straight six for Taylor who reached his blistering 50 off 30 balls. Bracey hit Paterson (8 0 56 1) for six over long off, 15 off the 33rd over. Chappell (8 0 45 0) returned for the 35th over but appeared to be limping in his run up. Taylor launched the returning Singh for a huge six over long on. In the 38th over, Taylor hit Singh for consecutive sixes, one straight and one over mid-wicket. In the following over, Bracey hit successive deliveries from Hutton (7 0 50 1) for 4 and 6 to bring up his ton. Could Taylor also reach his ton? Singh (6.4 0 69 1) was kept on and the Gloucestershire skipper hit him high to the distant deep kid wicket ropes where Martindale took the catch. Taylor had torn into Notts attack in his 55-ball innings, with young Singh being well and truly taken down.

Gohar came in and lobbed his second ball for a straight four. Gloucestershire 298 for 5 off 39.4 overs had won by 5 wickets, in what turned out to be a one-sided contest. No Notts bowler could contain the home batsmen on the very flat deck. Patterson-White was badly missed with bat and ball. Notts will no doubt make changes to the bowling line up for the Middlesex game on Friday, will Pettman and Hayes make their debuts? Sadly Patterson-White is still detained with the Lions in their non-first-class practice game in Canterbury. Notts would be far stronger with Jimmy Pattinson also in their team, but he appears to be rested for the tournament.

Despite today’s thrashing, Notts still top the group.MAG

Secret Squirrel's hand will be forced into making at least one change, with Liam Patterson-White's Lions outing at Canterbury...

So with Ben Martindale being added to the senior ranks today, you have to presume he'll be added to the wider squad to travel to Bristol.
