Strauss Doesn't Get It!

ECB Delay Vote Again

ECB to further delay vote on high-performance proposals?

More than half of the 18 first-class counties have indicated that they will not vote in favour of Andrew Strauss’s proposals to overhaul county cricket that includes a reduction in the number of County Championship matches from 14 to 10 per county and T20 Blast games from 14 to 10 (PTG 4007-19697, 24 September 2022). Any changes require 12 of the 18 counties to vote in favour but that decision was delayed until the end of October to allow counties to consult with their members.

However, it now looks as though no vote will take place until there is a package of proposals that will garner the two-thirds majority required, and that will require more negotiation between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the counties. ECB officials do not want to run the risk of holding a vote that they will lose.

Lancashire have become the latest county to say publicly that the Strauss proposals are “unworkable”, and that they will not even put them forward to their membership for discussion until they are reworked. They join Middlesex, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Leicestershire in saying that they will not vote for this reworked schedule or structure. Derbyshire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire are expected to make similar public statements after discussing the proposals with their executive boards and members.

The sticking points vary by county. Most will not accept a reduction in the number of T20 Blast games they can host because that would cost them up to £UK300,000 ($A 500,230) in lost revenue. Many have also said they will not accept as few as ten County Championship games because their members predominantly pay their fees to watch four-day cricket.

Sean Jarvis, the chief executive of Leicestershire, accused the ECB of “bullying” the counties and said that the proposals put a “potential nail in the coffin” of the County Championship. “I urge them to go back to the drawing board for a rethink” Jarvis said, “This structure threatens the whole future of the championship. That is something we will not vote for”.

In the statement to their members, Lancashire said: “There are many positives within the proposals. However, we have significant concerns with some of the proposals, notably around the structure of the County Championship. We do not feel the proposed structure will properly aid the development of young players and may well encourage short-term thinking. We also feel [the review] ignores other important aspects, most notably officiating and the impact of overseas players in domestic cricket. We do not believe the proposal works in its current form, so will not be presenting this to our members”.

is this start of a rebellion?

The ECB’s High Performance Review recommends:

reducing the number of County Championship fixtures from 14 to 10

reducing the number of T20 Blast fixtures from 14 to 10

This will result is a significant loss of revenue for the 18 First Class Counties and could render a number of them financially unviable.

The First Class counties are the lifeblood of English cricket. The loss of any of them would be an irreversible tragedy and a massive failure of governance by the ECB.

Whilst cricket fans appreciate the need to take care of players and rationalise the currently overcrowded schedule of fixtures, any changes  must:

PRIORITISE THE SURVIVAL AND GROWTH OF ALL 18 FIRST CLASS COUNTIES.

  2. Cheek of it , the club are asking for membership fees. They’ve got no shame whatsoever, if these proposals go through 5 games of championship cricket ( and you can bet your bottom dollar one of those will be at an out ground) .most members buy theirs because of the county championship I believe, 300 quid for a husband wife tickets to watch cricket in the middle of winter.foxy

  3. My fear re delay, is that ECB will give back the Blast matches, keep proposals as is for Championship and it could scrape through. They, in a cynical way are clever, though destructive, thinking several moves ahead.

    1. I don’t think there’s any secret about it ,we told them in a survey what we wanted a few seasons back. It wasn’t what they wanted to hear, so they ignored it and have been in cahoots with the ecb against the members ever since.foxy

    2. Then they should come out and admit it and explain to the members/fans generally why they are for it and how they think they will be beneficial.
