  1. If we were after a batting all rounder I think one who we should have looked at is Joey Evison……….need I say more

    1. That's exactly the inference I was drawing from the mismanagement of the Notts squad and their contracts this year. Obviously Lisa is back at her desk after her interviews for the ECB job, so perhaps we'll get some news of Haseeb Hameed's contract; be it with Notts or elsewhere at sometime soon.

  2. It was massively disappointing to lose a home grown player with such potential like Joey. However, after speaking to a mate who spoke to ‘The General’ (Paul Franks) at Lady Bay recently whilst i was watching Leicester play Durham, i am not sure we could have done much more to keep him in reality. He inferred that Kent are filling the heads of young players with unrealistic promises that they can’t keep, whilst Notts are not prepared to do that. He also said that if a player wants to leave, their policy is to let them go as we do not want players on our staff who do not want to be here. I understand, also, Joey’s got a very pro-active Agent which probably didn’t help the situation either.
The General also said they had played Joey in the first team on every single occasion he had been fit enough to play(presumably that means both batting and bowling) but they were not going to play him when he wasn’t of the required fitness levels to do the job they were asking of him. I have no idea whether the stats would back up this statement or not.
Can honestly say, i have never heard of Tom Loten, other than somebody told me he was playing for the stiffs, presumably on some sort of trial basis. Was he released from his contract by Yorkshire or not offered a new deal does anybody know ?
Notts Pravda likes to drip-feed their good news at strategic intervals so i assume the news on H.H.’s new deal will be announced at some point. It would be a poor situation if the club is not prepared to cough up the requisite amount he now deserves to keep him at the club ? Also, there are still rumours that Joe Clarke signed a new contract some time ago, so when will this be announced assuming its correct ?

  3. I was going to say “ is he any good?”

I used to see people being “ tapped up” at work on a few occasions. I never used to say anything because it would of sounded like sour grapes( I’d keep my own counsel) once someone had been flattered/ had their heads turn it’s pointless anyhow, even though they sometimes live to regret it . We can only wish young Tom all the best for his new career at Notts . If he is going to be compared to young Evison then he has a lot to prove. Does anyone have some stats that show his talent so far ?

  6. Good that Notts - again- get their business done early. I’ve never heard of this guy but sincerely hope it means another shift in they way that we approach white ball cricket next year. Move over Moores, Mullaney, Christian etc and let’s have more Dane, Singh, Hutton, Pettman etc. They all did well enough in the RL50 to warrant more outings next year. I’d add Slater to that list too.

I find it hard to believe Jacks is a better bet to open for England in Pakistan than Jennings or Hameed but that’s a different thread and let’s hope the latter gets a contract sorted soon.

    1. Yes, i tend to agree with that. I’ve always thought Jacks is mainly a white ball hitter(albeit one with great potential) but perhaps I’m completely wrong as i haven’t studied his stats in first-class and have never seen him play live due to the, what was then anyway, the divisional differences. HH cannot really complain, he had 4 Tests from memory to produce a score and just didn’t take his chance. You could argue Australia in their own back yard is a particularly difficult experience and he still deserved another few games against lesser opposition or in his own conditions before being jettisoned back to County cricket again ?
Good news that both Sammy King and Ben Martindale have both signed further 1 year contracts after coming through the Academy to then feature for the stiffs in 2nd Eleven cricket.
I’m contradicting myself a bit now, but, its just very ironic that the young player that we couldn’t convince his immediate future was with us is undoubtedly the best player and most talented of them all but I guess if he wasn’t then Kent wouldn’t have come calling quite so strongly with their desire to land him.

Reading all the posts on this thread its obvious there is a lot of feverish activity taking place in the Docs office at the moment . Good to see the new contracts being signed . The main remaining one to be signed is if course H. H. Surely being groomed to take over from Mullaney? . Good , classy, correct , patient , red ball openers are not easy to find in the current white ball mania . H. H.has years ahead of him in the game . Perhaps a decent 3 year contract is in order?

  8. Yes, you can only(almost) admire Notts Pravda and it’s strategic timing with their announcements. Suspect if Joe Clarke had fired in the last few games, the “good news” announcement would have been made well before now.
Assuming Haseeb Hameed is out of the Test reckoning he will be absolutely vital for us, going up to a much better standard of bowling in Div. One so the DoC will just have to cough up the pennies and put him on a 3 year deal that reflects a player of his standing, especially now as Ben Duckett may possibly be with England this summer(?) and no one can really be sure whether Ben Slater will find any consistency going up a huge level either. This is why to me we bring an overseas batsman in assuming there’s someone of the required quality and availability which can be a big problem for clubs these days.

  9. Spot on orac ,notts could do ni more ! Joeys agent is a pain to put it mildly ! Cricket would be a lot better off without agents! Lot of thi gs happen without general public being aware ,I will say no.more ,joey will be back !

  10. Pleased for Toby Pettman. He has improved an awful lot over the last 2 seasons.
I think he has gained a yard of pace watching him at times last season, although will never be out and out fast.
He has got the ability to bowl a consistent line and length, probing the top of off stump. As Notts Pravda states, he’s got the advantage of releasing the ball from a great heigh and these are the commodities that have essentially brought so much reward for Luke Fletcher in his first class career.
I am not sure if Toby will ever really be a t20 option, but I would like to see him competing and pushing for a starting place in both red ball and 50over cricket next season.

Mat Carter seemed sluggish and pretty unfit in the season just finished .Cant think that there will be a rush at TB to give him better terms. Is he now surplus to requirements?

    1. Yes, quite an achievement to have so many lads not in the greatest of conditions all playing together in the Blast - Patel, Carter, Mullaney, Fletcher - no wonder things finally caught up with us this season especially given the age of 3 of that ‘fitness oriented’ list.

In this super competitive age of cricket you cannot afford to " hide" unfit players in the field of play. Athletic fielding and top quality catching can often mean a 15/20 run bonus in a typical Blast match and perhaps more in a RLC game . That margin is often the difference between winning or losing a game .
I seem to remember that hard task master Clive Rice used to set the playing staff a " target weight" when they reported back for training . Those that failed the set target were made to run laps of the T B perimeter!

  15. Yes, 79 NOT OUT, I believe Eddie Hemmings’s ‘punishment’ was making him jog around the outfield twice - top class County spin bowler it must be said however.
I heard that dear old Samit Patel registered an age level of 50 when he did his ‘bleep’ test(allegedly)and this was a good few years ago now. I have no confirmation that this is true or false and there are some very fit 50 year olds out there after all.

The two most rotund Notts ccc players I have seen were opener Pasty Harris and our beloved match winner Eddie Hemmings. I remember a wag in the crowd shouting out loudly after Pasty had fumbled a ball on the boundary edge and fell over - " we,ve already had the heavy roller on !"
Pasty laughed - along with the rest of us in the old Bridgford stand

  17. My mate always said his nickname was pronounced Pastie as he pasted the ball I always thought it was because he came from Cornwall or did he just like Cornish pasties ?
Whatever, he must have been a very good player as says in his best year he hit 9 centuries

Its a long time ago but I seem to remember Pasty topping the Notts averages one season after scoring over 2,000 first class runs . Did he become an Umpire when he hung his cricket boots up ?
