Hameed New Club Captain

Hameed Announced as new club captain

pictured at the Oval where he captained the side to their
best performance of the 2023 season, in many supporters opinion.

Will he be captain in all formats?

If so, then in my opinion that would be a mistake...

    1. Best way to guarantee your place in the side - become the club Capitano 👩‍✈️
Suggest the Bolton Bradman was the only real choice, in reality (?) so good luck to him in this new role and let’s hope it brings out the best in his batting which it does to some Captains - i.e Gooch, for example
The Head Coach’s utterly ridiculous decision to play him in t20 last season was no reflection on HH. He is what he is, a very decent red ball opening batsman who has the ability to score runs in 50 over white ball cricket 🏏 also
Not too sure any other Head Coach would have played him in any other format - possibly Frank Spencer the other notable exception.

    2. Shouldn't be anywhere near the T20 eleven, it's just not his game IMHO. Questionable form in the Metro Cup too.

  2. 80 NOT OUT
Good luck 🤞 to Hameed !
But it’s blindingly obvious that he is very uncomfortable 🥴 playing the short game Blast . The format just does not suit some players batting styles . Hameed is one of them .
Seems to be level headed and a quiet thinker . He was the only reasonable choice . It’s a pressure job all right.

Yes, congratulation and good luck to HH. It's reasonable to say that it was a shallow pool from which he's been selected, but it strikes me he's got quite a lot going for him. Also, the official statement says he "will assume the responsibility of leading the County Championship and Metro Bank One Day Cup sides on the field". I wonder if an overseas captain is being lined up to revive the T20 fortunes?

He seemed to pass his audition well last year - the match at The Oval when, in trying circumstances, the team served up probably their best overall performance of the season. He always seems to carry himself well on and off the field, his enthusiasm and energy is plain to see. Perhaps most importantly, he's young yet experienced, likable, and clearly ambitious.

Let's hope he's given the opportunity to lead the team in his own way, supported but not compromised by those around him. With a few new faces around next season, I hope this might be a fresh start. But does the culture at the club stifle this: will it quickly become 'more of the same'?

  5. Andy Corran (1962) and Arthur Carr (1919) were both 25 when they were club captain. Hameed will be 27 when the seasons open versus Essex next April
