Durham Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge No Result 1 pt Report

HEAVY SHOWER ENDS ALL HOPE OF FURTHER PLAY AFTER DURHAM MAKE LIGHTNING START

Notts and Durham shared the points at Trent Bridge today after a torrential downpour halted proceedings after only 5 overs had been bowled. Notts will be far happier than Durham with the outcome as Durham’s left hand and right-hand combination of Alex Lees and Graham Clark had tucked into some pretty mediocre Notts bowling.

Heavy rain which did not stop until 1400 meant play could not start at the scheduled time of 1430. With the sun out and after a cleaning up operation, play commenced at 1600 with the game 17 overs per side. The crowd once again was sparse, the attendance affected by the weather, poor form and the ridiculous high ground admittance and catering prices.

Notts won the toss and elected to bowl. Ben Martindale made his T20 debut in place of the out of form Will Young.

The first delivery of the match was a full toss from Montgomery (Radcliffe Road End) that Lees hit for four through the covers. Clark hit Montgomery for a straight four off the fourth delivery; 12 off the first over. Clark hit Stone for successive fours through mid-wicket and extra cover, 12 off the 2nd over. Dark clouds were advancing from the south west when Lister's first delivery was smashed for six over mid-wicket by Lees, nine off over number three. Clark hit a mid-wicket boundary off Stone’s third delivery of the 4th over, two balls later he smashed a full toss from Stone for a straight four. Off the last delivery a long hop from Stone was hit by Clark for six over mid-wicket,l16 off the over. Lister was hit for four through the covers by Lees. Lister went for seven plus two leg byes off the 5th over. Rain stopped play at 1619 with Durham 58 for 0 off 5 overs with Clark on 31 and Lees on 22 and well on top. Although the deluge only lasted 12 minutes it left the ground saturated. A lightning strike had been viewed so the ground staff were not allowed due to health and safety reasons to set foot on the turf for 30 minutes, this despite bright sunshine. The game was called off at 1700. If Notts would have been allowed to bat for the minimum of 5 overs to constitute a result their target would have been 77. MAG

Back to back games, so can Notts use last night's DLS win as a springboard for a belated run of victories starting this afternoon against Durham?

Not Durham Jets, nor Durham Dynamos, just Durham. If the competition was sponsored by Bird's Custard, with the likes of Derbyshire Falcons, Essex Eagles, Hampshire Hawks taking part, we could have Durham Doves perhaps. Notts Nighthawks or Nightingales anyone? Kent Kites, Sussex Seagulls and Gloucester Gannets.

As MAG says in his report from last night showers, heavy and perhaps thundery, are on the menu this afternoon.

Expect the same eleven from the same squad but I'd like to see some form from Willy dot-ball Young or a change from the eleven There's no rule that says that if you have an overseas player that you have to play him! However, the coach has made one change this month already, so it'll take him until the end of this block of matches to recover.

Kids for quid and no price hike for on the day ticket purchases are today's marketing experiments, but the weather is more likely to be the attendance governor for those walk-ins of Bread and Lard Islanders this afternoon.

    1. The Lanka Premier League starts 1st July, but I don't know when Hales has booked his flight for.

  3. Rain easing from 4pm onwards, should be a sunny evening. Alas too late for the jolly old cricket.

  5. I think for Hales, Notts are now just another stop on his annual global journey. At 35 years of age, the club now need to draw a line, and look elsewhere. Alex still has the ability but lacks the consistency and motivation to warrant the fee that the club are having to fork out for his services.
Notts need to focus on an overseas top order bat for next years tournament, together with an all-rounder such as the calibre of Smith of Worcestershire.

  7. 81 NOT OUT .
Sorry to agree with above comments . Alex is now an expensive luxury that delivers on the odd occasion . Been a great player for the Club but am certain he will not get another Notts contract

  8. The whole saga seemed completely unacceptable and unsatisfactory in 2024 the crowd leaving in brilliant sunshine 🌞 and blue skies, but what can you do about 2 monster deluge’s in the space of 4 hours - sod all I guess ? Feel a bit sorry 😢 for the club, kids for a quid etc, market it all week and then you cop a day like today in this awful non-summer we’re having
Still think I’m hallucinating on Jez Prince 👑 playing Journey “Don’t stop 🛑 believing” and coughing up for a hot 🥵 dog 🐶 at £7.80 and 2 small cans of Malbec wine 🍷 each game at £5.90 each, because for one small minute I almost thought ultra cautious Peter Moores has not only found a way for LPW in the side but now also Notts 2s opening bat Ben Martindale in place of the now labelled Willy “Dot Ball” Young

ITS A WAKE UP CALL FOR NOTTS ccc
Customers are voting with their feet and wallets !
The whole Blast 20 experience is now JUST TOO EXPENSIVE! This includes car parking , beer prices ( the £1 charge for the plastic tumbler is a complete con ) , the catering prices are a joke especially considering the quality of fodder on offer . The catering outlets were virtually deserted . Low quality fish n chips - greasy and lukewarm - costs £14 . I refused to pay it yesterday when I saw what was on offer . I nipped across the road to the excellent Radcliffe Road chip shop . Totally different in quality and presentation and priced at £10 ! A FAR SUPERIOR PRODUCT AT A SAVING OF £4 ! Punters are daft . They know when they are being fleeced .
Come on Notts ! DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT . The whole Blast experience is a rip off from the moment you enter the ground . The sparse crowds prove it ! What happened to the near capacity crowds of past seasons ? TB always got 10,000 - 12,000 + !!!

    1. The competition is being played in the wrong months, we all know that and we all know why. However, you can't blame anyone for the weather.
You have always paid over the odds for beer at Trent Bridge.
The catering outlets these days are just there to capitalise on a captive audience and they know just how much that they can get away with, convenience v price and quality. Don't expect value for money!

  11. Waite for the hundred to start let's see then how the prices compare with the blast' in respect to Notts there projected financial numbers for the blast have totally
Nosedived the bean counters must be getting very concerned from what they envisaged

  12. Whatever month it's being played in does not excuse the rubbish cricket or the over pricing. True. weather is not Notts fault but the rest is. I know many who used to go with the whole family but due to intoxicated louts no longer entertain the idea. Walk up price nearly £30 - usually.

Imagine this scenario . It’s a Friday and Notts are playing an evening Blast match . I decide to go on the actual day because of the unpredictable weather . I am taking my wife . We need to park . We didn’t have time to eat evening meal so we buy something in the ground . Nice to have a couple of pints afterwards and perhaps an ice cream and a coffee at half time time . So it costs me
    2x £29 admission = £58
    Car Parking = £7
    2x fish n chips = £28
    2x beer/ lager = £15
    2 ice creams = £7
    2 coffees =£8
Total spend - without going mad comes to £123 .
That is simply not value for money .
£85 -£90 is what it should cost based on reasonable pricing viz 2 x £20 admission .Previous regulars ( families) are totalling up the cost of several visits and deciding its now not for them .The alarming drop in attendances should be setting alarm bells ringing in the Bean Counters room at Trent Bridge . They make a simple miscalculation . They want to increase profits and turnover . So what do they do ? They just increase the price of everything ! The result ? Reduced attendance and subsequent less spent within the Ground .A blind man could see its counter productive .
Everything has its price . If you overcharge for the product then you pay the penalty . This is the situation now at Trent Bridge on the vital Blast days .

  14. I’ll give the club some credit - having also had my voice on here asking for a plan regarding low crowds etc. They’ve tried something (walk ups same price, kids £1). Keep trying would be my request.
There’s 3 things against them; the 100, the time of year for the t20, and less well known players because of the World Cup largely.

I reckon Notts really peaked 7-8 years ago on t20 when they effectively almost doubled their average crowd (from about 6.5 to nearly 11). Not sure if the same ops and marketing management is in place now but it needs a refresh.

Is it worth joining the tavemers ie is drink cheaper in there? It has a certain logic that prices in the pavilion are same as the rest of the ground - albeit a notch unfair on members

  15. The club should be embarrassed by the attendances for the T20 matches this season and people should not be defending them. On the 100 ticket prices I know tickets cost £12 for the first year but I don't know if they still do, I suspect it would be a bit more than that.

  16. I really don't expect Notts to charge anything like £12 in fairness. The dreaded 100 is heavily subsidised and an awful product played just for laughs so not a fair compromise. But prices need to be addressed and I expect the Derbyshire game to be another special offer or it will be near empty.
