Lancashire Lightning Vitality T20 Blast at Trent Bridge Loss 0 pts Report

OUTLAWS LOSE AGAIN

in spite of a promising debut from Liam Patterson-White

Lancashire cruised to a six wicket win with nine balls to spare at a cool and windy Trent Bridge this afternoon. Despite members being given an offer “to bring in a friend for free” another disappointing crowd attended. Notts paid the price for two amateurish run outs of their two main batsman Clarke and top scorer Haynes.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat on the same wicket used three days previously. Liam Patterson-White was finally and very belatedly given his T20 debut, coming into the team in place of Pennington. He performed well smashing a 21-ball unbeaten 44 and then bowling 4-0-22-1 proving a big point to the obstinate head coach and vindicating public opinion of him in the stands.

The contest started in comical fashion with Clarke being run out for a duck. Hales played a ball from Luke Wood (Pavilion End) into the legside where Luke Wells partially stopped the ball at square leg, picking up the rebound quickly. Unfortunately after completing the single, Clarke turned blind and ran up the pitch and had to turn round but failed to beat Wells’ throw back to Hurst; 3 for 1. Five runs off the opening over. Struggling Kiwi Will Young was caught behind by keeper Hurst off Mahmood for a single, 6 for 2. Two off the second over including a leg bye. Haynes hit Wood to the fine leg ropes, seven off third over. Hales (4 off 12 balls) looked completely out of form, struggling to connect or time the ball, sliced Mahmood to Blatherwick at third man who took an easy catch; 22 for 3 off 4 overs. Haynes and Montgomery had to consolidate with Green conceding two runs plus a leg bye in the 5th over and Mahmood going for a single in the 6th over. Notts a miserable 26 for 3 off 6 overs.

Wells went for five off the 7th over. Haynes hit Morley's (2-0-19-0) opening delivery for six over square leg, 10 runs off the 8th over. Montgomery was lbw to Wells for 6, 45 for 4 in the 9th over. James then hit Blatherwick for 4 through square leg. Notts 58 for 4 after 10 overs.

Haynes, looking impressive hit Wells for 4 through mid-wicket, 10 off the 11th over including a leg bye. Haynes hit Morley for a straight six, nine off the 12th over. James (13) was bowled attempting a reverse sweep off Green, 77 for 5, three off the 13th over. Another dreadful piece of cricket saw Haynes depart. Moores was rapped on the pad and was perhaps lucky to survive a confident lbw shout from Wells. The ball squirted onto the offside and there was a single available, but Moores was looking down instead of up and Haynes had run three quarters of the length of the pitch before having to change course with Moores unaware of the situation and refusing to budge. Haynes (45 off 36 balls, 2x4, 2x6) was looking good for a big score, but had departed in farcical circumstances. Talk about the team shooting itself in the foot; 80 for 6. It was now up to Moores to make a key contribution, he hit Wells (4-0-25-1) for 4 through point, six off the 14th over. Green went for five in the 15th over.

Three years ago, Liam Patterson-White played the innings of the season at Taunton and suddenly the silent crowd suddenly came to life with the 25-year-old left hander playing a wonderful cameo. Patterson-White hit a short slower ball from Blatherwick for four through backward square leg. Next ball Patterson-White hit a six in the same area. Blatherwick bowled a no ball and Patterson-White hit the free hit for four through extra cover. Next ball, Patterson-White pulled Blatherwick (2-0-33-0) for four through long leg. At last, Notts had found a lower order batsman that can find the ropes; 22 off the 16th over. Moores (16) carved a wide yorker from Wood to the point ropes where Blatherwick took a fine diving catch; 120 for 7 off 17 overs. Harrison (1) was caught at backward point by Wells off Green, 124 for 8. Green (4-0-16-2) went for 6 off his last over. Stone was dropped on 4 by Green at mid-on off Wood. Patterson-White hit Wood (4-0-27-1) to the extra cover ropes; nine off the 19th over. Notts took 18 off the last over bowled by Mahmood (4-0-28-2), Stone hit him for four through extra cover. Patterson-White hit Mahmood for successive sixes over square leg. The first six was hit low with fielder Blatherwick in from the ropes dropping the hard chance with the ball going over the ropes. The second six was clean hit strike. Patterson-White (44 not out off 21balls, 4x4, 3x6) had proved a point. Everyone assumed following Patel’s move to Derby that he would be in T20 team from the word go but for one reason or another, he had to wait until the fifth match to get his chance. Notts 153 for 8 off 20 overs, Stone 10 not out. Despite Patterson-White late pyrotechnics, the two daft run outs had meant that Notts were 20 or so runs light of a competitive total.

Wells hit Montgomery (Pavilion End) for four through extra cover, seven off the opening over. Bohannon hit Lister for 6 over extra cover, 11 runs off the 2nd over including a leg bye. Wells (6) skied a short ball from Stone and was caught by Young at square leg who took a good catch with the ball swirling in the strong wind; 18 for 1. Jennings top edged Stone for 4, the only runs off the third over. Bohannon pulled Lister for 4 through square leg and Jennings repeated the shot later in the over, 11 off the 4th over. Bohannon skied Montgomery to Haynes in the covers, 35 for 2. Bruce hit Montgomery for 4 through mid-wicket, eight off the 5th over. Jennings, who always seem to perform well against Notts, took 15 off the 6th over bowled by Stone, He hit Stone for 6 over long leg and then next ball for 4 through fine leg. Jennings then two balls later found the point ropes. Lancashire 56 for 2 off 6 overs, well on their way.

Montgomery went for six off the 7th over. Harrison conceded seven off the 8th over. Bruce hit Montgomery (4-0 34-1) for a straight four and next ball for a six over long on, 13 off the 9th over. With his second delivery of T20 cricket, Patterson-White sent Bruce’s (22) middle stump cartwheeling, 82 for 3 in the 10th over. Four off the 10th over.

Jennings hit Harrison for a huge six over long on; 11 off the 11th over. Patterson-White conceded two runs off the 12th over. James (1-0-5-0) went for six including a leg bye in the 13th over. Patterson-White went for seven in the following over. Jennings reached 50 off 41 balls with a four through extra cover off Stone (3-0-30-1) who went for 11 in the 15th over.

Jennings (64 off 49 balls, 6x4, 2x6) hit Harrison for four through fine leg but he Harrison got his revenge bowling the Lancashire captain on the reverse sweep, 131 for 4 after 16 overs. But the end was nigh, Hurst hoisted Patterson-White for six over mid-wicket, nine off the slow left armers last over. Hurst hit Harrison (4-0-35-1) for four over mid-wicket; nine off the 18th over. At 17:14, a straight driven boundary from Matt Hurst (33* off 22 balls, 2x4, 1x6) off Lister (2.3-0-27-0) saw Lancashire (155-4 off 18.3 overs; Croft 5*) home.

Notts rock bottom, played five lost five, with one win in 12 games in competitive cricket in 2024. More youngsters need to be injected into the team at New Road to give them experience otherwise they will follow the path used by Joey Evison in 2022. The Academy isn’t designed to have a glass ceiling

  1. At the very end of this infomercial, he almost says about Sunday ‘we’ve got enough players to win’. Then he checks himself, resets, and says ‘we’ve got good enough players to play well’.

That’s where we are now. A decade into this setup, vast resources compared to most other clubs, and our internationally experienced coach hasn’t the slightest conviction that we’re competitive in any format.

  2. Thanks Peter, yet again the TB spin team give you him a easy ride in the interview not asking the fundamental questions, it's all to predictable & yes it will be the same team, we will go again on Sunday dust ourselves down & regroup the only place you should be going is down the road with newall & close the gate behind you

  3. Peter looks as old and tired as his team selections.

  4. In fairness to him, he can only answer the questions asked which were fundamental the same single question asked multiple times. Nothing about team structure, changes, longer term planning.

I’m a bit surprised he didn’t take the chance to really ask people to get behind the team, on a family and free tickets day, because they need support.

Last year of his contract? ……we all know how that can go

    1. I reckon both Moores, senior and junior will be here beyond the end of this season.Remember, Tom had his contract extended to the end of 2025.
They travel as a package.Let's hope they both get lost in the post.

    2. The crowd looked thin against Worcestershire - not sure what its was today. The accent has switched to the 100 and its being heavily promoted. One wonders if its a case of careful what you wish for and the Blast has been given a thumbs down when even Notts seemed more intent on highlighting the 100. Glad I am no longer a member. Then again Lisa and Mick have a record of letting members down

  5. Most agree the balance of the team is wrong - I think Baz Hales will play all the games. He is struggling ATM, but he is proven quality, you’ve got to back him for the games he’s here surely ? This side needs more match winners - not less, but perhaps you then decide this was his last ever contract with us after this campaign ?
Spin/pace off options have to come in and it’s logical to bring in LPW for Lyndon James surely. No disrespect to LJ - a proper batsman and we need him in our red ball side, t20 just doesn’t suit his game - I think this is proven now
The batting and tail desperately need strengthening and this won’t happen, but in times of crisis, you could drop Tumbling Tom as has been previously muted by others. You then get Clarke to keep, open the batting and Captain πŸ‘©‍✈️- it’s a tough one but we are now desperate after the Derby drubbing
Either Martindale or Sammy King πŸ‘‘ then come in to bat before Calvin in the order.
If LPW is so completely out of favour(for whatever reason) then you play Fateh Singh instead
Fletcher also plays - he’s still a better option but dunno 🀷‍♀️ how serious his hamstring situation is with the red ball campaign still to play after this
I am in no way convinced these changes will turn us suddenly into a winning side and the players coming in possibly are not good enough to impact the games sufficiently but better than just going on and ‘giving it a right good go’ as the Head Coach constantly repeats and just hoping things somehow click into place
IMO after 4 from 4 and particularly after last night’s embarrassing πŸ™ˆ disaster thrashing from your local rivals, you shake things up a bit surely ?

  6. Or what about Ben Slater playing as the extra batsman option also ?

  7. Never mind moors, it's newall who makes
All the calls about all recruitment of coaches backroom & overseas signings not forgetting who stays & who goes from the academy the buck stope with him
Only seen at the bridge when Notts are winning, he's the main instigator behind shambolic situation the club finds itself in on the field

    1. I have called for several seasons for Newell to be gone. What does he do? Presumably him and Lisa are covering each others backs.

    2. Newell should have gone 10 years ago. But Lisa Purseclasp is never going to sack her boyfriend is she?

  8. I'm puzzled why Hales is considered untouchable. He shows little interest when fielding-just watch him. And he's living on past innings pos 2 years ago.

  9. Mick Newell has been in charge for 22 years. And Ms Pursehouse is the longest serving CEO in cricket. Truly shocking stats given lack of progress recently.

    1. Regarding the earlier Hales posting - If there were world 🌎 class alternatives then I would possibly consider dropping Baz Hales in his current run of poor form, but we haven’t, most of the options are hardly prolific playing for Notts 2s so it’s difficult to make a case for many of them to put pressure on the under performing first teamers - I watch almost every days play on Lady Bay so have seen a lot of these lads down the years
Also you have to remember the level they are playing. Tumbling Tom was jettisoned back into the stiffs recently and hit 3 hundred’s averaging about 120 untill he was recalled to our first team again, so if a player only looks “reasonable or promising” you are not going to replace him for Hales, a world class opening t20 batsman and completely proven performer in this format over the last 10-12 years, albeit he is now struggling to make the scores of a few seasons ago. I would play Hales for the 7(I think)games he’s here and then make a judgment whether he’s no longer good enough to bring back in future seasons - I suspect this will be his last year with us anyway.
Regarding promise, great(and unexpected) to see Freddie “Terry” McCann in the squad, a player of great potential fast tracked from the Academy/U18s to the Notts2s and performing pretty well.
Freddie probably isn’t ready for this level quite just yet, but it would still be great to see a relatively unknown to many, young player come straight from the 2s and get a chance in Peter’s first eleven for a decent run of t20 games
It’s all opinions at the end of the day - nothing more, nothing less !!!’

Like it or lump it, the same team that has looked about as useful as a one legged man at an arse kicking party, will be there tomorrow to do battle with the Lanky boys.
    Remember coach knows best.

  12. In the four 2nd XI T20 matches this last week, Hameed made 50 (off 38 balls), 58 (off 36 balls), 36 (off 41 balls) and 8 (off 7 balls) against Lancashire and Derbyshire attacks each containing at least three first-team bowlers. In addition, Slater made 60 (off 37 balls) in the last of these games. Whilst these two have never been first-choice T20 players, why, given this sort of form, have they not come into consideration for the first-team T20 squad when we have so far only mustered one individual 50 and the batting line-up in general has repeatedly been guilty of poor judgment and poor execution?

  13. The composition of this team for T20 cricket is unbalanced.
In hindsight , instead of having Young and Lister as your overseas pro's, they should have recruited a seam bowling all-rounder and a spin bowling all-rounder.
There are too many fault lines in the present line up which are being easily exposed by our opponents.
It's a cruel baptism for Clarke as captain which is probably now having a detrimental effect on his batting. Patterson White, a possible candidate, who has been overlooked now for the best part of a year, has possibly lost confidence and rhythm to his game which is understandable. Moores, for whatever reason, isn't prepared to risk any other candidate from the 2nd eleven.Unfortunately, all cricket coaches will have their own favourites. This is certainly the case at this club.

    1. Yes - and also not helped one bit by the Matt Carter situation when contracts for Lister, Young & Farooqi are already in place - the quicker the latter gets here, the better he’s obviously a much better t20 player than the other two incumbents although, I admit, I have never seen him bowl
Good luck to the lovely Marie and the Blaze girls today playing the Northern DiamondsπŸ’Ž at Headingley before the Tykes take on Derbyshire later as part of the Double Header

Tne Notts fans are doing your job for you
Peter Moores! Loads posting up on here said Liam Patto-White should be given his chance in the Blast 20 Comp. Bring in a decent bowler who can also clear the ropes
Well , he hits a blistering knock of 44 off very fre deliveries .
Why on earth did you not bring him into the side two matches ago ?
He has helped to get Notts to a decent score of 150 - to at least make a game of it .

    1. Yes Hales not timing the ball and just playing flat footed swipes.
After 5 defeats and the disgraceful omission prior to this game of Patterson White, Moores has to risk the likes of Martindale to replace Hales and batsman capable of hitting 6's such as King or Singh.
      What is there to lose.

  16. Almost certainly Hales will be playing his last game for Notts next weekend

Sad to see a once great player struggling to repeat past gloriies . Hales is now like a punch drunk fighter - who is accepting more fights.
Qualification for the quarter finals are now a million to one . So Peter Moores has nothing to lose by selecting two or three players from the current Second 11 . If they fail , then so what ? They live to fight another day and gain valuable experience .
    QUESTION
WHEN DID NOTTS LAST LOSE FIVE 20 OVER MATCHES IN A ROW?
( its six in a row counting the quarter final defeat)

  19. Even when Hales was at his best he only ever played for himself. That’s the way of modern cricket I’m afraid

  20. Sorry anyone can say thd coach can only prepare the players until they cross the boundary rope ! Well either the coach can’t coach these failures or these failures are un coachable !
Again today wicket after wicket a shambolic mess and bowling even worse !
Coach Moore’s should accept his time is up as with our director of cricket plus our CEO and depart in dignity !
Notts cricket is just to pally

  21. Well done to Liam - and huge shame on the Head Coach for doing everything he could not to pick him before we lost 4 from 4 culminating in that disaster thrashing by Derby
Hales may have shot it - but somehow Will Young seems to have escaped copping it - when did we last have such a poor, ineffective t20 batsman as choice of overseas player in this format ?

  22. Young not escaped. Just not a T20 player. I agree with earlier comment. Bring in a few from the stiffs. Nothing to lose. And make the change at Wicketkeeper please!

  23. Great credit to LPW and to Haynes, surely we didn’t have t20 in mind when he was signed. Looking forward to the opinion on his run out. It was Moores call but there looked a single there to me

There’s similarity I think in the offing between LPW, Hutton and Luke Wood (who looked very sharp). The latter two left us because of too few opportunities- combination of white and red ball.

I thought we looked better today on attitude and spirit. Was always 20-30’tpp few though and that’s the price of having always to recover from a poor start and then a mid innings clatter of wickets.

  24. Slightly better performance today. Well done Patterson White but I'm still totally sick at the mess this club is in and no one seems bothered.

  25. Best game so far in the blast but still it was very comfortable for Lancs. Two bad run outs, and Hales going missing again meant we were always up against it. But better balance today with two and a half spinners, and a significant impact from LPW. But why did it take so long to change the team, only the coach knows the answer to that. Could the two imports be the weakest ones we have ever had, making no impact whatsoever.

Two more Blast matches to come for Notts in the next 6 days. Peter Moores now has egg on his face over the exclusion of Liam in the team up until yesterday.
Would love to be a fly on the wall listening to Moores and Newall pontificating over the next two team selections . What to do ? Make wholesale changes and hope the new recruits rise to the occasion . Or just plod on - dust yourself down and start all over again ? ( what useless words they are - they mean nothing)
Notts are reduced to giving free tickets away ( yesterday) and now kids are allowed in for £1 ( the match on Sat) What next ? Free admission for pensioners? Free admission for females? These are desperate times indeed for the Marketing Dept. - who’s revenue targets will be falling well short .

    ReplyDelete
  27. The old guard will be selected even though it's now virtually impossible to qualify for last 8. Pointless. Lets experiment please.

  28. There’s all sorts of additional marketing experiments πŸ”¬ they could try if they get really desperate ? - dogs 🐢are allowed in for 50p, cats 🐈‍⬛ in for 30p and squirrels 🐿 10p
As a further incentive all members can sign up to be replaced by a cardboard cut out of themselves in the stands as opposed to actually attending matches personally if they get their next door πŸšͺ neighbour to attend with a free ticket 🎫 instead of them. Also, everyone should be entered into a free draw each game to win a call up to Jez “The Fresh Prince πŸ‘‘ of TB” Prince’s gantry for a personal meeting and a photo shoot with him wearing his green/gold Outlaws cape
The TB marketing Dept. needs to start thinking laterally now ?

Yes desperate times require desperate measures!
Dont want to keep going on about this very bad run of results and the possible explanations being proffered by all and sundry- including me . But I just wonder if anyone involved in the team decision taking process ever reconsiders their position at the Club ? Or do they just dust themselves down and start all over again - and again..........
