OUTLAWS WIN ON THE ROAD
Hutton (Hilton End) and Haynes opened the bowling. Gubbins and Orr made a steady start. Orr hit Hutton for six over square leg, 10 off the 5th over. Lord replaced Hutton for the 7th over. Orr hit Haynes for two boundaries, 10 off the 8th over. Orr (33) was strangled down the legside and caught behind by Schadendorf off Hayes, 57 for one in the 10th over.
Notts pulled off a surprise four wicket victory with eight balls to spare at the Rose Bowl, successfully chasing 291 for victory. Notts were indebted to a fine economical bowling spell from Joe Pocklington and composed innings from Haynes and Hameed to maintain their qualification hopes.
They won the toss and inserted Hampshire on a predominantly cloudy day. There were three changes to the Notts line up. In came McCann, Hutton and Hayes and out went King, Hatton-Lowe and Pennington.
Lord bowled a maiden for the 11th over. The out of sorts Hutton (4 9 32 0) replaced Hayes for the 14th over and conceded 13, two boundaries for Gubbins and one four for Middleton. He never bowled again during the Hampshire innings. Pocklington came on for the start of an excellent spell for the 16th over. James was introduced for the 17th over. Middleton (23) was caught at wide long on by McCann off Pocklington, 106 for 2 in the 20th over. Gubbins got to 50 off 52 balls with a single off James in the 21st over. McMullen edged successive boundaries off James, 10 off the 23rd over. McCann came on for the 25th over. South African born Scottish International Brandon McMullen (20) was out in identical fashion to Middleton caught at wide long on by McCann off Pocklington, 137 for 3 in 28th over. Prest (11) was bowled by McCann attempting a reverse sweep, 151 for 4 in the 31st over.
Lord replaced Pocklington after an economical 8 over spell for the 32nd over. Lord only bowled a two over spell and made way for James. Hampshire had got bogged down somewhat but Mayes then reverse swept McCann for six, 12 off the 37th over. Hayes returned and had Mayes (18) caught at square leg by Pocklington, 197 tor 5 in the 39th over. Gubbins reached his 100 off 99 balls with a four off Hayes through backward point. A rare misfield for Pocklington, who has patrolled the boundaries excellently for Notts throughout the competition, 10 off the 41st over. McCann and Pocklington came back for the 43rd and 44th overs. Gubbins hit McCann (9 0 51 1) for six over mid wicket, nine off the 45th over. Organ (20) on the sweep was lbw to Pocklington (10 0 28 3), 243 for 6 in the 46th over. Gubbins hit Lord (8 1 54 0) for 4 and then for successive legside sixes, 18 off the 47th over. Neal hit James for six over mid wicket, 12 off the 48th over. Gubbins hit Hayes (9 0 54 2) for six over mid wicket, nine off the over. James (10 0 70 0) bowled the last over and went for eight. The excellent Gubbins (144 not out off 126 balls, 14x4, 4x6), who carried his bat throughout the Hampshire innings, went for a single off the last ball but non striker Neal (14) was run out by Schadendorf pea rolling the ball to the stumps. Hampshire 290 for 7 off 50 overs. Pocklington very much the star with the ball for Notts. Gubbins the first man to reach 500 runs in this year's competition.
Abbott (Pavilion End) conceded a single off the first over, Martindale edging him just wide of second slip. Wheal was his opening partner. Martindale (3), did not last long inside edging Abbott with keeper Mayes taking the catch, 8 for 1 in the 3rd over. Slater and Haynes withstood the opening barrage. Notts 43 for 1 after 10 overs.
McMullen and Jack replaced Abbott and Wheal for the 11th and 12th overs respectively. Slater hit McMullen (3 0 26 0) for successive boundaries , 13 off the 13th over. Slow left armer Neal came on for the 15th over. Neal appeared four times for Notts Seconds in 2022 but in those days he was a left arm seamer attached to Hertfordshire. He has obviously changed his bowling style in the intervening period.
Haynes, in fine form once more, got to his 50 off 42 balls with a single off Neal in the 17th over. Slater (31) going for shot over mid wicket lost his middle stump to Jack, 91 tor 2 off 18 overs. Organ came on for the 20th over.
Hameed played out a maiden in the 22nd over with 27 runs coming off the next five overs. Abbott came back for the 27th over conceding five runs. Hameed hit Organ for six over long off and then for a straight four, 11 off the 28th over.
Haynes (97 off 89 balls, 12x4) looked set for his second consecutive ton, but in the 32nd over he miscued Jack and was caught by Abbott at mid on, 164 for 3. The third wicket had added 73 in 14 overs.
Neal returned for the 35th over and McCann (15) hit him for six over long off but perished three balls later top edging a reverse sweep off the slow left armer to be caught by Organ at short third man, 183 for 4 after 35 overs. The game even.
Organ returned and bowled a maiden in the 36th over. Neal conceded 10 off the 37th over, two boundaries for Hameed. Hameed got to his 50 off 55 balls hitting Organ (7 2 38 0) for 4 and 6 through extra cover, 11 off the 38th over. Hampshire playing into Hameed's hands with an all spin attack, the Notts skipper in imperious mode. Neal conceded three singles in the 39th over. Jack returned and went for ten - boundaries for both Hameed and James. Notts 219 for 4 off 40 overs. Notts now favourites needing 72 off 10 overs.
Hameed on 59 skied Neal (10 0 51 1) into the covers, Middleton dropping the chance, five off Neal's last over. Jack went for 16 off the 42nd over, two boundaries for Hameed including one off a free hit. Hameed hit Abbott for a straight six, 12 plus a bye off the 43rd over. The game suddenly burst back into life when Jack bowled Hameed for 86 (off 80 balls, 8x4, 3x6) with a slower ball, 254 for 5, two off the 44th over. Schadendorf hit Abbott for two fours through mid wicket, 12 plus a leg bye off the 45th over. James hit Wheal for two fours, 9 plus a leg bye off the 46th over. Schadendorf (13) was bowled by Abbott (10 0 61 2), 280 for 6, two off the 47th over. Notts though were nearly home. James edged Wheal (9 1 41 0) for four, six off the 48th over. The 49th over was bowled by Jack (9.4 0 70 3) and at 18:14 Pocklington cover drove him for four to get Notts over the line. Notts 292 for 6 off 48.4 overs with James unbeaten on a run a ball 28 and Pocklington on 5.
Notts lie in fourth place needing to beat top placed Gloucestershire and bottom placed Surrey to have a chance of qualifying for the last six. After two wins in four days, anything is possible! MAG

Despite everything, hope we win. Would all wins in matches left be enough to qualify?
ReplyDeleteNot neccessarily enough as could finish level 3rd with Derbyshire and then it would be down to net run rate, but it's too far out with too many permutations at this point. We need to beat Hampshire first and then Gloucestershire; we might have more of an idea then. Critically Gloucstershire and Hampshire play eachother in the last round of games, which are played after Notts have completed all of their own games.
DeleteAbsolutely incredible run chase by the lads - massive well done 👏 to everyone - totally brilliant
