HAMMERED
Notts were hammered by Yorkshire in their T20 opener last night by seven wickets with 21 balls to spare.
Yorkshire won the toss and inserted Notts in front of a crowd of 11843 in blistering hot temperatures. Notts having lost T20 regulars Harrison and Montgomery were also missing McCann (broken thumb), Patterson-White (England Lions duty) and George Linde (visa problems). They had an unbalanced eleven too short of batting and strangely only elected to play one spinner. George Munsey, Joe Pocklington, Benny Howell and Mohammad Ali all made their T20 debuts for Notts in a much-changed line up. Ben Duckett made his first T20 appearance in two years in what is likely to be his sole appearance in the 2026 Blast.
Notts lacking big hitters finally found a way of winning home games by producing slow turners last year. All that had seen to be forgotten and a flat deck was produced playing into the oppositions hands. Farhan should now be a T20 regular and the omission from the 15 of Ben Slater baffles me. He has proved in the championship and 50-over cricket that he can hit the ball and is currently full of confidence. Unfortunately he appears to have been pigeon holed… he should now take Duckett’s position in the line-up.
Hill (Radcliffe Road End) removed Clarke's (1) middle stump off the sixth delivery of the match; 2 for 1. An ominous start.
Duckett pulled Tye for a mid-wicket four. Munsey then whipped a four through square leg and four through extra cover; 13 off the second over. Duckett scooped Hill for four through fine leg. Munsey hit Hill for six into the Fox Road Stand; 14 off the over. Duckett was dropped on 13 a caught and bowled chance to Moeen Ali. The next ball he reverse hit him for four over point; seven off the 4th over. Duckett hit Tye for six over mid-wicket and two balls later a four through extra cover; 11 off the 5th over. Duckett (29) skewed Bess to van Beek at wide mid-off; 47 for 2. Haynes lofted Bess for four over mid-wicket. Notts 53 for 2 off 6 overs.
Munsey was dropped on 17 by Bairstow diving full stretch to his left off van Beek as Notts continued to ride their luck; seven off the 7th over. Munsey switch hit Chohan tor four to third man; nine off the 8th over. Haynes hit Moeen for successive fours through extra cover and point, 10 off the 9th over. Munsey (28) was caught at deep backward square leg by Luxton off leg-spinner Chohan; 80 for 3. Three off the 10th over.
Moores hit Bess for four through backward point. Haynes (20) scooped Bess (3-0-27-2) to van Beek at backward point who took the catch diving backwards, 90 for 4 off 11 overs. Moores found the backward point boundary off Chohan, seven off the 12th over. Moores hit Bess for six over wide long off and four through backward point, 13 off the 13th over. Moores was dropped on 27 at backward point by Bess off van Beek – it was not a costly miss. James lofted van Beek for a lofted straight four, seven off the 14th over.
Moores (28) was caught on the mid-wicket ropes by Revis off Moeen (3-0-19-1; 117-5), three off the 15th over. Pocklington swept Chohan for four. James (9) drilled Chohan (4-0-26-2) straight down the pitch the bowler taking the chance at the second attempt;127-6 off 16 overs. Notts well and truly struggling on what appeared to be a 200 plus deck. Howell provided some much-needed impetus as he smacked 30 off 13 balls (1x4, 3x6) as Notts scored 40 of the last four overs.
Howell lofted van Beek (3-0-26-0) for four over mid-on; 12 off the 17th over. Howell hit Tye for six over mid-wicket, nine off the 18th over. Howell hit Hill (3 0 28 1) for six over mid-wicket, 12 off the 19th over. Howell hit Tye for six over extra cover. Top scorer Howell was brilliantly caught on the extra cover ropes by Hill off Tye (4-0-40-1). Notts 167 for 7 off 20 overs. Pocklington 16 not out. A uncompetitive total, well below par. Yorkshire used three spinners, and in spite of the flat deck bowled 10-0-72-5. Notts meanwhile had only selected one spinner….
Lyth hit Pennington (Pavilion End) got four through fine leg but was dismissed next ball caught by Stone at mid-off, a wicket for Pennington (4-1). Luxton hit a lofted four through mid-wicket, 10 off the first over. Luxton (5) had his stumps detonated by an Ali yorker; 11 for 2. The ball of the evening, a rare pitched up delivery from Notts.
Two balls later, Wharton played Ali to point where Howell stopped the ball and hit the stumps at the strikers end from a direct hit, Bairstow getting home by the narrowest of margins; three off the 2nd over. Wharton hit Pennington for six over mid-wicket. Ali conceded just a single off the 4th over. Ali impressive – Yorkshire 23 for 2 off 4 overs. But it went rapidly downhill from here 146 runs coming off the next 12.3 overs @11.68 RPO
Notts lost all the momentum as Stone, bowled three successive short balls which Wharton hit for successive fours and for a six over mid-wicket; 16 off the 5th over. Clarke did not allow the on-fire Ali a third consecutive over - Bairstow hitting Howell for six over wide long off. Yorkshire 50 for 2 off 6 overs.
Pocklington conceded five singles in the 7th over. Bairstow swept Howell for four through fine leg, six off the 8th over. Bairstow swept Pocklington for four and six through square leg off successive deliveries. Off the next ball he switched hit him for four through third man; 17 off the 9th over. Wharton hit Stone for four through point. Bairstow scooped Stone for six through fine leg. Stone 2-0-32-0. Ouch! Yorkshire 94 for 2 off 10 overs.
Bairstow clubbed Pennington for four through mid-on and then a boundary through third man to bring up his 50 off 32 balls, 17 off the 11th over including four byes. Howell went for seven in the following over including four for Bairstow through the covers.
Wharton hit Ali for six over long leg. Bairstow then hit him for four through the covers. Bairstow lofted Ali for a straight four, 17 off the 13th over including a leg bye. Only four came off the 14th over bowled by Pocklington (3-0-26-0).
Bairstow hit Pennington for six over backward square leg. Wharton got to his 50 off 39 balls with a four through the covers off Pennington. Wharton (55) attempting a switch hit was caught behind by Moores off the expensive Pennington (4-0-46-2); 155 for 3 off 15 overs. After Ali’s explosive start Bairstow and Wharton had added 144 in 13.2 overs. Moeen hit Ali (4-0-27-1) for four through the covers, seven off the 16th over. Ali and Howell the only shining lights for Notts, although Pocklington on debut did not disgrace himself.
Howell (3.3-0-30-0) bowled the 16th and what turned out to be the last over. Bairstow (83* off 47 balls, 9x4, 4x6) hit the winning runs a four to third man. Yorkshire 169-3 off 16.3 overs. Moeen 6 not out.
Not a good start for Notts and they face a stiff test as they head to Old Trafford on Monday. Linde should debut but Notts’ batting line up as it stands at present looks unsuited to 20 over cricket.
Finally to all you stattos out there a no ball in a 20 over match now only accrues a one run penalty (as per law 21.15) rather than a two-run penalty which the ECB use to apply to the competition since its inception. MAG

So on the eve of the competition, Mohammad Ali has been announced as being a replacement for Peter Siddle, as such..
You can see why, with no George Linde it would look like someone had been just sitting on his hands for the past two months
The announced squad gives the bonus name of Ben Duckett, who will be in the XI for this game rather than George Munsey, who'd be in the wrong time zone, (physically or mentally or both) having played for Scotland in Nepal only yesterday.
15 names, so giving little away.
Squad:
So clearly Linde is not in the country owing to a visa complication and Munsey isn't yet or has only just arrived (but is listed)

EXPERIENCE?
News emanating from Trent Bridge has been non-existant as per usual, so we're left to speculate...
George Linde, on which continent is he at this moment?
Is there a replacement for Peter Siddle to be expected?
Will Joe Clarke open with George Munsey (but George M was in Nepal today with Scotland)
I had completely forgotten we had signed George Munsey !
ReplyDeleteVerreynne's a decent enough T20 player in recent times too, should absolutely be in the side, as should Ben Slater shouldn't he?
ReplyDeleteThe quality of being an Internatinal ought to be enough, but that thinking didn't do so well when Moores persisted with Will Young in 2024 (MN - "we were poor") averaging 9.3 at 77, six matches he was given and it was sad and painful to watch. Ben Slater had a go in 2024 as well and averaged just 10 at 133. Neither are T20 suited in my opinion, we'd do better looking to a carefree youngster but the stated plan is to get experience into the squad blend, which worked well when we had our golden spell in the format pre-Covid.

ReplyDeleteWould love to be a fly on the wall when Moores , Newell etc start to pick the Blast team for tomorrow . It’s looking distinctly unsettled ! Who is in ? Who is out ? And only 24 hours to go
At least the weather forecast for tomorrow looks great . Plenty of £7 pints of ale to be sold !?
You're slipping Richard, you didn't mention the Fish and Chips this year, are you on a diet?
Delete82 NOT OUT
DeleteNo Dave - am not on a diet ! Never been on one in my whole life . I have probably consumed 5,000 portions of fish n chips in my time . The take a way price is staggering . Fish , chip S and peas with a pickled onion at Cods Scallops on Mansfield Road is now £17 ! That’s a take away for one person .
But at my age I just pay up . I am at TB tomorrow for the Blast . What will the mobile chip van be charging for very average fodder ?
Glad to hear it 82 Not Out
DeleteExcellent GIF HBD - did take me a short while to figure out the relevance - so I am slipping !

ReplyDeleteLast word on fish n chips .
Shock - horror ! The TB mobile fish n chip shop was NOT selling fish tonight ! Just scampi and chips priced at a hefty £13.50. Is fish simply too expensive for traders to purchase any more ?
That sounds a bit π€ fishy π to me 83not out(soon to be)

ReplyDeleteCricket at TB last night was a great advertisement for the 20 over game . Terrific attendance, ,glorious weather , some entertaining cricket , friendly atmosphere , plenty of youngsters loving the spectacle of evening cricket .Plus the game was launched with a mini firework display from the roof of the Raddy Road scorebox .- a nice touch .
All in all - a good nights entertainment coupled with a £10 admission fee - great value . A pity that Notts lost the game ! We were doing ok until Stone bowled two overs at a critical stage that went for 32 runs . Notts lost momentum after that and the game slipped away . My only complaint is that I think Notts are overdoing the loud music contribution . It’s perhaps too often and some of it lasts 10/20 seconds too long .
What do others on here think about last night ?
Top tip, sit in the Hound Road Stand, the PA and music were muted last night. Bliss!
DeleteIt’s about time π°️ you got right down πthere with the kids 82&9/10ths NOT OUT - Hank Marvin & The Shadows are no more - you gotta feel the vibes of the bangers shakin the stadium man - Jez Prince’s playlist on the way for you !

ReplyDeleteI think they should vary the style of music played between the fall of wickets and boundaries. Its also played at deafening decibel level after a change of battting gloves or ball inspection etc etc . Some old classics , soft rock , heavy metal , classic 1960s 1970s stuff . Rap and the thumping base based 2026 stuff is ok from time to time . So then Notts , can the attending generation aged over 25 have a bit of music played that they actually recognise ? It’s not much to ask ? I have over 500 CDs sitting in the garage should the Notts DJ want a bit of musical variety .
