Notts Dominate on Day One

Notts suffered no obvious hangover from Wednesday night after dominating the opening day of their championship match against Sussex at Trent Bridge.
On a warm sunny day, visiting skipper Mike Yardy won the toss and elected to bat on a greenish wicket. Notts selected their normal recent championship team on a day that Patel and Taylor got Lions call ups. The batting duo will miss the championship games at Taunton and at home to Durham in mid August. Hales who has had a mediocre season misses out and had a poor day in the field yesterday.
Gurney (Pavilion End) and Phillips (Radcliffe Road) opened up with accurate spells as Sussex crawled to four without loss off the first seven overs.

Adams replaced Gurney, and took seven balls to get his first wicket, as Ed Joyce was rapped on the pads and was given out by umpire Jeff Evans to depart for seven, 22 for one. Next over Phillips had Nash (15) driving loosely to be caught by Read. Hales badly dropped Luke Wells with the scoreboard on 30, with Adams being the unlucky bowler. Carter bowled an excellent spell from the Radcliffe Road End and should have been rewarded with a wicket but Hales still at first slip dropped another dolly as Wells now 18 survived once again. Sussex got to lunch without further blemish on 69 for two.
Soon after lunch, Phillips got Notts nemesis Goodwin to edge and at the third time of asking Hales clung onto the catch as the Zimbabwean partnership with young Wells had added 48 runs in 22 overs. Next over, Yardy was run out without facing a ball. Wells played the ball into the covers where Wessels threw down the stumps with a direct hit with Sussex captain well short. Ten overs later, the over-rated Luke Wright (7)  edged Adams who had replaced Phillips from the Radcliffe Road End and Voges at second slip took a superb catch diving to his right goalkeeping style as Sussex were now 89 for five after 47 overs. Carter swapped ends and bowling into the wind from the Pavilion End struggled, Ben Brown twice glided him down to third man for boundaries. Samit Patel replaced him
There was help for the bowlers all day from the Radcliffe Road end and in the 55th over, Wells stubborn innings came to end as he played a poor shot to from a Gurney long hop and edged to Read. Wells’ 54 came off 147 balls with eight fours, a very determined but somewhat fortuitous innings.  Gurney picked up his second wicket as Magoffin also edged behind as the Martlets now stood at 144 for seven. Carter replaced Gurney and removed Brown (37) leg before and four overs Anyon spooned the ball to Taylor at square leg as Sussex were now 166 for nine. Carter picked his deserved third victim as Khan was comprehensively bowled as Sussex were 171 all out. Eight of the ten wickets had been taken from the Radcliffe Road, Joyce and Yardy’s run out dismissal’s being the exceptions. Carter was the pick of the attack with 12.1-3-41-3. Adams who was off the field during some of the afternoon session took his championship tally to 52 wickets with two for 36.

In the ninth over of Notts reply Hales (14) was unluckily to be given out off Khan (Radcliffe Road End) as umpire Michael Gough gave him leg before to ball looking like it was going over the stumps. Khan was generating some pace but Sussex bowlers overstepped seven times total as 14 extras were added to the scoreboard. Wessels’ whose 199 earlier this season at Hove was the innings of the season was batting well and was 38 not out at the close with the reliable Lumb with him on 28 as Notts went to stumps on 88 for one, trailing Sussex by 83 runs.

Division Two table bottomers, Leicestershire will be thanking Matt Boyce's 106* out of 318/9 at the close of their first day against the Tykes but Yorkshire will be kicking themselves because of the run count of Extras, 47 at the moment, second place on the honours board.

On other matters Yorkshire; ex Tyke David Wainwright took 3/133 against Australia A for the county across the Erewash divide.
Mitchell Starc took the only Derbyshire wicket to fall.

Day 2 at Trent Bridge

Michael Lumb dropped on 27
Riki Wessels "comprehensively" bowled by Amjad Khan the Flying Dane, the ball "keeping low".
A Magoffin no ball brings up the hundred.
A driven four off Luke Wright brings up Michael Lumb's fifty.
