v Scotland 2012

Voges Excels as Saltires are soundly beaten

Notts strolled to another easy limited overs victory today as Scotland were defeated by 88 runs at sunny Trent Bridge in front of a crowd of around 3,000.

Chris Read who had recovered from his injury scare yesterday won the toss and elected to bat on the same wicket as used for the Surrey championship game. Mullaney was rested and was replaced by Graeme White.

Lumb was unlucky to given out leg before off the very first ball of the innings. The ball from Gordon Goudie looking to be going over the stumps but umpire O’Shaughnessy thought otherwise. Hales and Taylor added 82 in 12 overs as the bowling was hit to all parts. Scotland’s overseas player slow left armer Jean Symes had Hales stumped by keeper Wallace, Hales’ 37 had come off 35 balls and included five fours. Taylor forever scampering his runs got bogged down by Haq’s offbreaks as the scoring rate slowed down a little in mid innings. Taylor was caught at point to a reverse sweep off the former Paisley postman for a 82-ball 68 an innings that included eight fours, 155 for three. Voges added impetus to the innings and with Patel added 86 in 10 overs. Patel (82) who hit two sixes and six fours was eventually bowled making room against the returning Goudie. Voges who showed more aggressive intent than usual finished unbeaten on 64 off just 39 balls with four fours and three maximums. Wessels was out in the last over being caught at the faraway deep square leg boundary. Notts score of 265 for five was perhaps 20 runs short of what it should have been but always looked to be daunting a target for the visitors. Haq was the pick of Saltires attack with 8-0-32-1.

Pattinson bowling the second over of the reply pulled up after two balls and had to leave the field with a groin strain, his place for Wednesday’s baseball game now seems in some doubt. Voges completed his over. As Notts were without Mullaney to turn to so were forced to bowl the spinners during the power play. With the score on 33 in the seventh over, Callum McLeod drove the ball hard to Gurney who dropped the return catch only succeeding in deflecting the ball onto the stumps with non-striker Josh Davey (27) out of his ground.

Seventeen runs later, McLeod was stumped by Read off White. Goudie promoted up the order scored a run a ball 21 but was bowled making room as White picked up his second wicket, 89 for three in the 18th over. Richie Berrington fell to an outstanding caught and bowled by Voges diving full length to his left as Scotland were now 96 for four. In Voges next over Symes was run out without attempting to get back as Taylor made a bit of hash of his throw to the bowler. Next over Majid Haq fell leg before to Patel, 106 for six. Preston Mommsen who has trailed for Leicestershire this season was next to go as Patel picked up his second wicket courtesy of a catch by Wessels. Ryan Flannigan hit Gurney for three successive fours during the batting power play but fell for a 25-ball 38 (caught Wessels bowled Voges). Voges picked his third wicket as Jan Stander went leg before and the innings was wrapped as captain Gordon Drummond was stumped off White with fours overs unused as Scotland were all out for 177. Voges was the undoubted man of the match with 64 and 7.4-0-37-3. Graeme White took three for 42 against one of his favourite opponents.

The Director of Cricket has a potential selection dilemma on Wednesday; if Pattinson remains lame will White, Ball or perhaps even Adams taken the last bowling slot?  MAG
