Warwickshire LV 2012 at Trent Bridge Day 1

Mid-way through the afternoon with Notts 155 all out; this game looked hopelessly one-sided. But a spirited fight back by the Notts bowlers reduced The Bears to 90 for six. Unfortunately an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 49 has put the visitors in the stronger position particularly as they appear to have no tail within their batting order.

Notts made a late change to their line up by preferring White to much more logical selection of Sam Wood. The fact that White did not bowl all day, once again batted very disappointingly and Wood fielded as 12th man made everyone scratch their heads to the reasoning behind it all.

Warwick won the toss and inserted Notts on a pitch well on the Bridgford Road side of the square. Kelsall who bats at three for the Academy side was thrown in at the deep end by facing first up and he sank without trace by playing on to Woakes third ball; better luck next time. Edwards whose loyalty card to his favourite drinking hole may be expiring soon; once again looked all at sea and departed leg before to the impressive Barker for two; 16 for two. Wessels whose form seems to be tailing off departed leg before to Woakes; 18 for three. Mullaney (14) was next to go caught at first slip off Barker whose was swinging the ball both ways bowling an excellent spell from the Pavilion End.  Read and Taylor added 27 runs before the captain had his middle stump removed by a peach of a ball from Wright; Read out for 18; 68 for five. Taylor (17) who had stuck around determinedly for 50 balls then fell leg before playing across the line to Clarke; 83 for six. The last ball before lunch saw the hapless White edge Patel’s off spin to slip; 92 for seven.

Franks fresh from his 156 for Farnsfield on Saturday showed great fight and added 32 for the eight wicket with Phillips before the latter after hitting three fours was caught behind off Wright for 13. He had been bowled off a no ball by Clarke in the previousa over. Franks 75-ball effort ended when he had middle stump removed by Wright for 44. Carter clearly not relishing Wright’s pace was caught at short leg as the former Middlesex and Essex man finished with four for 28. Notts 155 all out with Extras for once not making the honours board with a paltry 12, clearly Boyd Rankin’s no balls were sadly missed! The Irishman is with Will Porterfield in Sri Lanka with The Bears also missing Bell, Trott and Tiny Tim. Making seven missing from the Notts line up compared to five for The Bears.

Phillips bowled accurately from the Radcliffe Road end and deservedly had Westwood leg before. Six overs later the prolific Chopra chopped on as Warwick were now 30 for two. The Bulwell Metronome was also bowling well and picked up Troughton who played a poor shot to be caught behind for 10; 45 for three.  Maddy tucked into the bowling hitting six fours before missing what appeared to be straight one from Carter as he left with 41 to his name; 85 for four. Carter suddenly hit a golden patch by consistency pitching the ball up as his next over Johnson played on. In the following over the Lincolnshire Poacher had Woakes caught behind for a duck. Blackwell attacked Carter who conceded 14 in his seventh and final over of the day. Blackwell finished the day unbeaten on 28 with Clarke on 21, as Warwick closed on 139 for six. The ball swung all day and the pitch was a bit two paced which was reflected in the number of batsman playing on. Notts though could be well pleased with their bowling efforts with Fletcher once again bowling his heart out. MAG
