Warwickshire Day 2

Scores Level and two get cut ............... and then there was 2

When rain halted proceedings at TB today at 1335, the scores were level with Notts having all their second innings wickets still standing.

Notts removed the final four Warwick wickets this morning for a cost of 65 runs. The seventh wicket partnership between Clarke and Blackwell raised 72 runs when an excellent spell from Phillips was rewarded when Blackwell was tempted to flash outside off stump and was caught by Mullaney at second slip for 37. Carter replaced Phillips from the Radcliffe Road and produced a gem of a ball to clean bowl Clarke also for 37; 173 for eight. Barker then was dropped by Mullaney at slip off Carter. After his working over by Wright yesterday, Carter returned the compliment and hit Wright in the nether regions. Softened up by the blow Franks removed him next over as Wright chased a wide one only succeeding in edging the ball into Read's gloves. The last wicket pair added 26 runs before Patel skied Franks to Edwards in the gulley. Warwick 204 all out with Notts putting in a fine bowling effort with Carter bowling as well as he has done all season with figures of 4 for 55 and was well backed up by Ben Phillips with three for 60. Barker finished on 22 not out.

Kelsall and Edwards took Notts to lunch at 28 for no wicket. The players returned for 25 minutes until the intermittent rain became more persistent as Notts closed on 49 for 0 with Edwards on 16 and young Kelsall on 25. An interesting last two days of the season are in prospect.

Meanwhile Notts have announced that Scott Elstone and Karl Turner are not being retained. Like Akhil Patel last season, both players could be considered somewhat unlucky as they have not been given a fair crack, whereas more senior players in recent times have been given too many chances. I think Elstone in particular could make an impact in pyjama cricket if a county out there is prepared to give him a punt! Good luck to both players finding new counties. MAG

Unofficially it has been calculated that 10 players of the 2012 playing staff were in the final year of their contracts; Turner and Elstone were 2 of them. (2)

Another pair were Voges and Pattinson - both in Australia and neither is expected to return. (4)

Of the players in the current eleven; Phillips, White and Carter join Jacob Ball as being without a contract for next season, effectively drinking with Neil Edwards at the Last Chance Saloon.(9)

The tenth name in an unofficially collated list, which could be wrong, is very surprisingly Samit Patel. Any new contract for one of our most senior (in status) players, would have been widely publicised - which it hasn't so we can assume it is accurate. (10)

The figure 10 has been unofficially confirmed from a source, in the know, known to a Nottsview contributor.
