For whom the bell tolls.

Expectant father, Michael Lumb is a doubt for the first two days of the "only a big win will do" match at the Oval, before his England duty - Neil Edwards is sitting in prime position to pick-up the tab at the "Last Chance Saloon" yet again from day one, should the baby's head need wetting or at last orders day 3, when Lumb is due to take-up his stint with England T20.

D of C "Neil has earned a chance with runs in the second eleven and we need to see something from him if we are to consider a new deal for him next season."

With Alex Hales departing at the close of day 2 too;  Paul Franks, Andy Carter and Steven Mullaney  are all possible replacements.

Astonishingly Sam Wood is expected to be in the starting eleven once that is finalised.

"Sam Wood is a genuine all-rounder and his off-spin will be valuable on the pitch we expect Surrey to prepare," said the D of C.
