v Netherlands YB40 at Trent Bridge

Orangemen defeated in the sunshine

Notts cruised to an easy 89 run victory over the Dutch in front of a sun drenched crowd of 2850 at TB today.

Notts were unchanged from Birmingham. Peter Borren the New Zealand born captain of the Orangemen won the toss and inserted Notts.
Lumb and Hales added 60 for the first wicket in just over eight overs, with the left hander Lumb looking in fine form once again. Hales (21) cut Borren’s medium pacers to backward point to be caught by Cooper. Lumb raced to 50, before falling to Seelaar’s arm ball for a 45-ball 54; 82 for two. As the ball got older it got harder to hit and boundaries became somewhat scarce as Patel and Taylor added 112 in 20 overs which involved quite a bit of scampering. Slow left armer Seelaar bowled Patel who was trying to make room and he departed for a patient 61 off 67 balls an innings which included six fours. Wessels hit a run a ball 11 before holing out to long on just like that to Tom Cooper’s off breaks, 217 for four. Titch Taylor’s typical workmanlike innings drew to close when he was bowled by South Australia regular Cooper for 75 off 74 balls with six fours. Read (13*) and Mullaney (17*) added 29 in the last three overs as Notts closed on a highly competitive 263 for five.  The two spinners plus the captain had done a good job but the Dutch seamers were somewhat disappointing and the fielding at times was somewhat ragged.

Western Australia Michael Swart was caught at short mid wicket by Patel off the accurate Ball for five, 12 for one. The Dutch could not break the shackles as Gurney and Ball bowled accurate opening spells. White came on early and in his second over Myburgh hit the ball to deep mid wicket where substitute Sam Wood took an outstanding diving catch in front of The Fridge. Wood was on the field for Mullaney who failed to appear after tea. Next over Tom Cooper was fooled by a slow bouncer from the impressive Shahzad and was caught behind for a duck. In his next over Shahzad took two wickets in two balls. Barresi was caught at deep cover by Wessels for 21 then as the batsman had crossed van Bunge lost his leg stump for six, 52 for five. Dominic Michael had been incorrectly given out by the electronic scoreboard but he carried his bat for the remainder of the innings for 59 not out as the match subsided to a slow death. Titch Taylor also left the field to be replaced by the equally pint sized Kelsall. Holland were eventually all out for 174 having doubled their score from being 87 for seven in the 25th over. Shahzad was the pick of the bowlers with three for 26. But all the bowlers had done their bit, the Notts fielding was also very impressive in the warm sunshine. Notts are now five for five in the competition and they return to 40 over action in three weeks time against The Bears at Trent Bridge.   MAG

For those wondering who and with how many votes, topped the Facebook man of the match poll yesterday - Samit Patel with 31, falling short in second was James Taylor with 21. There would appear plenty of scope for skulduggery with those figures in future votes.

The Dutch have doubled-up on their subs, announcing a squad of 13 for the YB40 match at Trent Bridge.

The Outlaws are to decide on the same XI (as Thursday) or not depending on Andy Carter's fitness and on the way the wind blows, or so it seems. Complacency is perhaps the Outlaws greatest foe today but the Netherlands side does possess players with vast International experience, if not all of the highest standard.

The Netherlanders: Peter Borren (captain), Wesley Barresi. Tom Cooper, Daan van Bunge, Mudassar Bukhari, Tom de Grooth, Tom Heggelman, Ahsan Malik, Paul van Meekeren, Stephan Myburgh, Pietar Seelar, Michael Swart and Dom Michael.
