Tom Moores has been named in England's Under-19 World Cup squad – and Mick Newell has challenged the Nottinghamshire wicket-keeper to be Chris Read's successor at Trent Bridge.
Moores, 19, is the son of Notts' coaching consultant, former England coach Peter Moores.
He is one of two promising young keepers on the staff and director of cricket Newell says he and fellow second team player Tom Keast must use the next couple of years as an audition to succeed club legend Read.
"Tom is very well thought of. As Chris Read moves into the twilight of his career in the next two or three years then we can we look at two very good young wicket-keepers in Tom Moores and Tom Keast," he said.
"In a couple of years they'll be in their early 20s.
"The challenge for them is to make sure one of them takes over from Ready; to make sure that we don't look outside the club."
Read might be 37, but his glove work remains as strong as ever and he averaged 51 with the bat in the County Championship last season.
"Ready is still an excellent player," said Newell. "He had a blip in 2013 when he thought his eyes had gone, but he was good in 2014 and tremendous last year.
"I don't think he's lost a step at all with his wicket-keeping."
