v Yorkshire Specsavers at Scarborough

305 RUN DEFEAT FOR NOTTS

Notts lasted until the 58th over before being expunged by Yorkshire.

Overnight hero for Notts, Tom Moores (41), lasted four balls this morning before becoming the 3rd of 5 wickets for England cast-aside Tim Bresnan. The Yorkshire groundstaff must have been up with the lark, to soak-up the overnight deluge with equipment brought-over from Headingley, to allow play to begin on time, but motivated by a "certain" victory, they were successful in their endeavours.

The morning Notts procession from and back to the pavilion was only slowed by a 47 run partnership between Brendan Taylor (38) and Brett Hutton (20) which was soon broken after lunch. No one else lasted long enough to warrant a mention apart from Luke Wood who tried his arm at the death, making 16 not out off 9 balls. Only 5 batsmen lasted more than 9 balls, before being got out in that excuse for a second innings.

The D of C will tell us that it was always going to be tough, against a strong Yorkshire eleven, but after another "disappointing" match, cries for change at the top can only get louder. The season will end in relegation regardless of who is pulling the strings, but no one wants the current road crash pile-up of performances to continue.

There is defeat and then there's going down without a fight, Notts have done the latter, again at Scarborough.

RAIN DELAYS EARLY RESULT

Rain temporarily saves Notts blushes

Notts need a further 391 runs with seven wickets standing as heavy mid afternoon rain washed out the remaining 56 overs of the day.

In front of much smaller crowd than the previous two days play got under way 40 minutes late due to heavy overnight rain. Yorkshire batted for further 12.2 overs adding 63 runs without loss. Under heavy cloud cover, conditions under foot were damp and sawdust was called for from both ends. Tahir did not field. Ballance got to his hundred off 163 balls with 14 fours and after two balls of the next over Yorkshire declared with a lead of 451, the score standing at 263 for 4, Ballance had 101 and Bresnan had 35. Notts had 15 minutes batting before lunch. It only took Yorkshire nine balls to remove the first Notts batsman, Mullaney (2) edging a rising delivery from Brooks with Leaning taking an easy catch at third slip, three for one. Notts went to lunch on four for one off 5 overs with Libby and Moores both on a single.

Thirty five minutes after lunch Bresnan replaced Brooks from the Trafalgar Square End and with his first ball of his spell Jake Libby (9) edged him to Lehmann at slip, 34 for two. The walking wicket that is currently Michael Lumb went for another quack, out fifth ball as he edged to Hodd, 34 for three. Young left hander Moores the one shining light for Notts decided attack was the best form of defence and played a few pleasing strokes hitting eight fours in his unbeaten 41 but just as he was putting a bit of a smile to the beleagured Notts fans faces the umpires took the players off for bad light at 1448 with Notts 61 for three with Brendan Taylor on three. Heavy rain arrived shortly after and no further play was possible, play being called off at 1550. MAG

NOTTS BEACHED AT SCARBOROUGH

After another depressing day for Notts supporters, Yorkshire closed in a position of total domination leading by 388 runs with six second innings wickets still standing.

Notts batting reached a new low this season losing their last eight wickets in an hour and three quarters this morning. The batting is just getting worse with each passing game, the large away travelling contingent  were very disappointed with the performance. The bowling attack tried their hardest but was distinctly pop gun when compared against the artillery of Sidebottom, Brooks, Bresnan and Patterson.

On another sunny morning Notts had a session which nightmares are made of. Michael Lumb lasted just 11 balls before edging Sidebottom into Hodd's gloves for a duck, 41 for three. In Sid's next over Mullaney was absolutely plumb leg before for 25, 48 for four. Patel was next on the conveyor belt as in the following over from Sidebottom he played a terrible waft and was caught by Bresnan at first slip for four, 52 for five. Brendan Taylor was then dropped low down by Bresnan at first slip off Sid whilst still to get off the mark but the procession continued as Brooks bowled a slow bouncer that Read played early: the attempted pull for four looping into hands of Lees at extra cover, 61 for six. Taylor played his trademark up "periscope shot" off Patterson and the ball went for six on to the roof at the Trafalgar Square End, the ball was never retrieved. Brooks picked up another wicket when Hutton (5) edged him to second slip where Lyth took the catch low down, the umpires conferred and confirmed the ball had carried, 79 for seven. Taylor was bowled in the next over by Patterson for 14, 79 for eight. The Zimbabwean had faced 53 balls.

Bresnan replaced Brooks from the Trafalgar Square End and Wood (7) edged into Hodd's gloves, 87 for nine. Fletcher (6) edged to Leaning at slip as Bresnan picked up another wicket. Notts 94 all out. As well as Yorkshire had bowled, it was a pathetic effort from Notts. With the Scarborough club set to lose thousands of pounds, Yorkshire decided not to enforce the follow on despite a lead of 188. Yorkshire faced one over from Mullaney before lunch and scored two runs.

Lyth and Lees added 72 for the first wicket when Lees (30) was leg before to Hutton bowling fro the Trafalgar Square End. Four further runs were added when Wood had Lyth caught and bowled for 41 much to the delight of the youngster. Fletcher fielding in front to of the eastern terrace was receiving plenty of banter. One stop on the ropes was slightly dubious and led to plenty of expletives heading in his direction. He took this all in good faith. Yorkshire reached tea on 115 for two with Ballance with 20 and Lehmann on 21.

Lehmann and Ballance added 61 in 21 before Lehmann (35) skied a ball from Patel to Wood at mid wicket, 137 for three. The sun went in and clouds rolled in as another large crowd slowly drifted away. With the light fading Patel replaced Luke Wood from the Peasholm Park End and with the third ball of his new spell had Leaning stumped for 15. The new capped Leaning had struggled to get going having faced 55 balls hitting three fours. The fourth wicket had added 57 runs in 18 overs, 194 for four. With seven overs still to bowl the umpires took the players off for bad light at 18 04 with Ballance on 75 and Bresnan yet to score. Tomorrow's forecast is mixed, but there appears to no sliver cloud for Notts. MAG

Notts couldn't afford another domino-run this morning, if they were to win this game and gather a decent points haul in the process, but unfortunately that was what happened.

YORKSHIRE WRIGGLE OFF THE HOOK

as Hodd carries them to 282

After having their best 90 minutes of the season, reducing Yorkshire to 51 for six, Notts let Yorkshire off the hook as the home side got to 282 all out, the lack of bite in Notts bowling being sadly exposed. Notts closed on a shaky 38 for two at stumps.

On a sunny morning the toss was uncontested as Notts inserted Yorkshire, the pitch having a greenish tinge, the ground getting a soaking over the weekend. Tom Moores came in for his Notts debut and Fletcher and Hutton returned and out went Jake Ball called up by England, Gurney with an injury and Wessels was dropped. Yorkshire like Notts were weakened by international call ups, despite this they still had a very strong line up. Prior to the start, Jack Leaning and Azeem Rafiq were presented with their county caps by Yorkshire President John Hampshire.

Lyth and Lees made untroubled progesss against Wood (Peasholm Park) and Fletcher (Trafalgar Square). Mullaney replaced Luke Wood and in his first over "The Hand of Mull" struck again and in a reprise of Ryder's dismissal in the Essex quarter final non striker Adam Lyth (12) was run out via a deflection, 21 for one. In his third over Mullaney got Lees (13) to edge to Brendan Taylor at second slip, 26 for two, with the ball swinging around. Next over Jake Lehmann yet to get off the mark hit a delivery from Fletcher low to Patel at leg slip the ball bouncing just short. But next over, Lehmann was caught at third slip off Mullaney for five, 36 for three and Notts had got a point within an hour of the start. Next over, Captain Gary Ballance was leg before for one, 36 for four. Hutton replaced Fletcher after a nine over spell as Mullaney struck again, Bresnan padding up without playing a shot. The batting hero from the match at North Marine Road in July out for ten, 51 for five. Next over Jack Leaning (5) edged a rising delivery from Hutton to Patel at second slip, 51 for six in the 22nd over and just 90 minutes gone. Hodd and Rafiq counter attacked to good effect and added 46 in eight overs as Yorkshire got to lunch on 97 for six. Mullaney three for 26 in his nine over spell.

Hodd and Rafiq carried on the good work in the afternoon session as Notts toiled in the sun in front of a crowd numbering 5,000, the spinners were introduced belatedly. Tahir came on first from the Trafalgar Square End and then Patel in his first over from the Peasholm Park End had Rafiq leg before for 74 off 92 balls with eleven fours. The seventh wicket had added 132 runs in 33 overs to change the dynamic of the game . Patterson did not last long being plumb leg before to Tahir for two, 192 for eight. Yorkshire got to tea on 202 for eight with Hodd on 65 and Brooks on one.

Yorkshire rubbed Notts' noses in the dirt after tea as the bowling wilted. Brooks, not a renowned batsman, blasted his way to 48 before in the 80th over, Hutton bowled him for 48. The ninth wicket had added 88 in 20 overs to probably take the game away from Notts. Brooks had faced 66 balls with seven fours and one legside six off Mullaney. The new ball was taken slightly late as Notts awaited Sidebottom to get strike and with the second ball with new cherry Sidebottom was leg before to Hutton for a duck. Hodd with his highest championship score for Yorkshire was stranded four short of his ton. His 96 came off 185 balls with 10 fours. Yorkshire 282 all out. Notts bowled wholeheartedly but lacked a spearhead to their attack with Ball missing. Mullaney had figures of three for 54 and Hutton three for 67.

Notts had 12 overs to survive. Mullaney played out a maiden from Sidebottom but off Brooks' first ball from the Trafalgar Square End Jake Libby was leg before for a golden duck. Moores the young left hander was a surprise number three and he looked relatively composed against the menacing Yorkshire attack. However in the last over of the day he edged Bresnan to Lyth at slip to depart for 23. Notts 38 for two with Mullaney on 15. Notts target in the morning will be to get to 133 and avoid the follow on. 1. Stuart Broad will undergo a further scan tomorrow on his left ankle and has been withdrawn from the squad by the ECB.

    What a shock!

    1. a total lack of confidence at the club. Heads should roll before the end of the season or even the members' forum.

  5. Today's collapse doesn't beat that of earlier in the season at The Oval where the last 8 wickets were lost in the second innings for the addition of only 38 runs in 12.2 overs. Today we did manage 53 runs in 23.5 overs and I would rate the Yorkshire bowling attack greater than that possessed by Surrey. The bad news is that we are not yet in September where performances normally dip even further...

    1. It's all very disappointing, but why is it happening and why wasn't there interventions weeks ago. Has Newell lost the players confidence?

  6. I try to keep hoping, but 94 all out at Scarborough, a batting ground with short boundaries ? Not sure what to say !

  7. Re Tahir not bowling: Feel sorry for him. What's the point of having a leggie if he never has anything to bowl at?

  8. Mick Newell: He's struggling, we're struggling, 2 difficult years. Even if this is the end though, we shouldn't be quite so bloody ungrateful, far, far more responsibility has to be put on the players underperforming, not all at Mick's door

  9. I don't think we're ungrateful for what MN has achieved nor were we ungrateful for Clive Rice's achievements but there comes a time when management have to take some responsibility for their decisions. The makings of this seasons debacle were all there to see last season but Peter Moores managed to put the wheels back on. Unfortunately it was clearly obvious after the first two matches (very nearly threw away the Surrey match, bowled out by Wagner (who he?) in the second) that this was going to be a season of toil in the red ball game.

  10. There's so much negativity , I know there is a little to shout about , but ''Our'' Club needs support through good and bad.

I always respect Supporters opinions but we must remain behind the team.

I always appreciate the disappointment but don't under estimate the impact it has on the players also.

The way forward is, some clear thinking and strong support as The Club gets back to its best

    1. Supports still there - but you've got to appreciate the disappointment. Too many players haven't shown up this year.

To clarify; biggest disappointment has been overseas signings. Presumably not cheap, and won't be impacted by drop.

    2. It's not the fans/members 'negativity' that's got the team rooted to the bottom the table.

  17. There needs to be clear thinking in the club without doubt. This message needs hammering home into the head if the DofC.

As usual he has backed the wrong horses for too long. Why have a second X1,if none of them get considered for selection.Tom Moores probably only got picked because the club were frightened he might leave. (he still might of course).

Abandon the failed policy of bringing average journeyman to the club and put faith in the lcoal talent which over time will bring it's rewards.
