Viking Raid sees Outlaws Surrender (their wickets)
Billed as a match featuring 18 internationals, this turned out to be a one sided bore as Yorkshire cantered to an easy seven wicket victory with 104 balls unused at Trent Bridge today.
Notts paid for the price for a dire batting effort on a blameless pitch, too many batsmen threw their wickets away against the visitors disciplined bowling. With only three teams qualifying from the group Notts now need to win at least five of the last six games to stand a realistic chance of making the quarter finals. Without the injured Mullaney and the big hitting Dan Christian the team seems ill equipped this season to make an impact in the 50 over competition. Their batting is too weak and unreliable.
Yorkshire won the toss and elected to field, Luke Fletcher Notts' best bowler at New Road was replaced in the line up by James Pattinson. Yorkshire opened with Willey (Pavilion) and Bresnan (Radcliffe Road). There was a four minute hold up after Lumb was hit on the hand from a ball that popped up from Bresnan; he later did not take the field. After 10 overs the score stood at 43 for 0, but then Rafiq came on at the Pavilion End and with his first ball had Hales caught low down to his right; Hales out for another disappointing score 10 off 28 balls. It got worse in the next over as Lumb hit Fisher straight to Lyth at mid wicket. The left hander gone for 35 off 40 balls with six fours, 47 for two. Wessels and Patel had added 24 in eight overs when Patel (14 off 28 balls) pulled a long hop from Rashid straight to Fisher at mid on. Taylor joined Wessels and he took a liking to spin twins Rafiq and Rashid playing plenty of sweeps and paddles. The 4th wicket partnership added 65 in ten overs. Another poor shot saw the end of Wessels a chip shot off Willey went straight into the hands of substitute Jack Leaning at deep square leg. Notts 136 for four in the 30th over. Wessels had made 41 off 49 balls with one six and one four. Billy Root (6) playing against his brother Joe lasted 14 balls and then edged Bresnan into Bairstow's gloves, 150 for five in the 34th over.

The poor batting display continued as Read was caught at short mid wicket for a six ball duck, Plunkett the bowler. Taylor then got to a pleasing 50 off 44 balls. The farce continued as Pattinson played the ball straight to Rafiq at extra cover but non striker Taylor never left his crease and Pattinson (1) was run out by a country mile, 158 for seven. The sun finally appeared from the cloudy and cool skies to applause but home fans misery continued as Taylor having batted well threw it away being caught at deep square leg off Bresnan for 60. The innings which contained a high proportion of runs behind the wicket came off 59 balls with eight fours. Ball departed in the same over for a 2-ball duck; caught behind by Bairstow. Broad was then the last lemming of the cliff as he was caught on the ropes for 17 off Willey. Notts all out for a dire 185 with 55 balls unused. Yorkshire had stuck to virtues of line and length and did not give away a single extra. The wickets were spread around with Bresnan the pick with three for 22 off seven overs. Too many Notts batsman were culpable for their own downfall, they were literally giving the Yorkshire fielders catching practice.
Yorkshire raced to 41 off for first six overs as Pattinson and Gurney were put to the sword. Broad replaced Pattinson from the Pavilion End and with his first ball removed Jonny Bairstow leg before for 10. Adam Lyth got to 35 off 28 balls but then was caught at deep square leg by Billy Root off Jake Ball, 76 for two off 12 overs. The rest of match proved a cake walk against the unthreatening Notts attack as Handscomb and Joe Root got some useful time in the middle; adding 92 runs in 18 overs. The Australian was finally dismissed tickling a leg side ball from Gurney into diving Read's gloves. Handscomb had scored 46 off 54 balls with six fours. It was left to Joe Root to hit the winning six over mid wicket off his brother Billy's off breaks. Root 75 not out off 80 balls with seven fours. Not a match to linger in the memory for home supporters.MAG
Some awful shots to get out from several players left the bowlers too much to do. It was lost at the break....hence the dull Yorks innings.
