Surrey RLODC Final at Lord's

HALESTORM BLOWS SURREY AWAY

A truly sensational record breaking innings from Alex Hales saw Notts to a memorable Lord's final victory over a Surrey side that have now lost three finals on the trot.

Surrey were in total charge scoring 83 without loss after 11 overs after a nervous Notts start that saw them drop two sitters. Enter Samit Patel who once again shone on the Lord’s stage and took three crucial wickets. Despite Mark Stoneman carrying his bat for 144, Surrey's final total of 297 seemed about par.

But,Hales went ballistic in spite of the first five batsmen in the top order not being able to support him.

Enter Chris Read in his 19th and last season with the club. With Hales scoring at more than a run a ball, the skipper could play himself in and the two of them added 137 runs in 20 overs for the sixth wicket to turn the game in Notts' favour, they batted the game situation superbly. Read was finally out for 58 with only 11 needed. He left to a standing ovation and waved his bat to the large Notts contingent on arrival at the Pavilion steps. He was later raised by his ebullient team mates in front of the Notts fans in the Compton Stand as Luke Fletcher led the celebrations.

Hales 187 not out came off 167 balls with 20 fours and four sixes. Hales the holder of England's highest List A and Twenty 20 individual score now had the highest individual score in the Lord's List A game beating David Boon's 166. He also broke Michael Lumb's Notts record of 184 against Northants last season.

Hales even got the Pope's blessing being dropped by the Surrey youngster (Ollie Pope) on nine but the rest of his innings was chance-less. They will be talking about this innings for many years ahead. He was an easy choice of man of the match. Notts had won their fourth consecutive Lord's final following up trips in 1987, 1989 and 2013. Peter Moores had won the first trophy that was on offer and Brendan Taylor after years of playing for Zimbabwe had finally tasted the feeling of winning a trophy.
Surrey won the toss and elected to bat. Off the very first ball Roy was dropped by Wessels at first slip off Fletcher, a dolly as well. Notts were made to pay for this error as Fletcher and Gurney leaked 55 in the first six overs. Fletcher conceding 26 in his first three overs. It got worse when Stoneman was dropped at cover on 32 by Mullaney an absolute sitter. With Surrey 83 for 0 after 11 overs. Read turned to Patel. Bowling his first ball from the Nursery End Jason Roy (23) edged him to Mullaney at extra cover who took the catch. Pattinson who replaced Fletcher was exhibiting a degree of control. Stoneman got to his 50 in 45 balls with most of his runs square of the wicket and none in The V. Pattinson bowled six overs consecutively for 26. Mullaney replaced him and in his third over had Sangakkara (30) caught behind by Read standing up, 141 for 2 in the 23rd over. In his fifth over Patel had Borthwick caught by Mullaney at mid wicket for 14, 172 for three off 30 overs. The game was turning and in next over Mullaney bowled Foakes middle stump second ball for 1, 175 for 4; a case of that's all Foakes. It got even better for Notts as young Ollie Pope (4) was caught at first slip by Mullaney as Patel picked up his third wicket, 180 for five. Stoneman got to his ton in 105 balls with an edged four off Patel. Sam Curran added 48 with Stoneman but then missed a straight one from Pattinson to depart for 24, 228 for six. Pattinson conceding 11 off his last over. Broad replaced him from the Pavilion End. Tom Curran was run out going for two after confusion with Stoneman, Patel with the bullet like throw from in front of the Grandstand, 256 for seven. Read rotated his bowlers to good effect and in penultimate over Fletcher bowled Batty for 11. Gurney removed Dernbach (5) in the final over caught by Wessels at long on. Broad strangely only bowling nine overs. Stoneman dropped on 32 had batted the complete innings with 144 not out off 149 balls with 12 fours. Surrey 297 for nine. Patel always the man for the big occasion was the pick of the bowlers with three for 51. Pattinson the fastest bowler in the game was the only man who consistently beat the bat finished a fine stint with Notts with 10 overs for 48.

In the reply Hales was dropped on nine by Pope in the covers off Sam Curran; which later proved pivotal. Hales in his next over hit the first six of the game over square leg off Sam Curran. But Curran the younger had Lumb leg before for 4, 25 for one after four overs. Hales was monopolising the scoring blasting the Surrey bowlers to all parts. Wessels hit a four through point off Rampaul but fell next ball leg before for six, 60 for two in the ninth. Hales raced to 50 in 35 balls and Notts reached 100 in the 14th over with Hales 82 not out. Patel (7) though fell in the next over pulling Rampaul to long leg, 104 for three. Hales though could not find a partner Brendan Taylor (11) straight drove Dernbach for four but then edged him into keeper Foakes gloves, 128 for 4 in the 20th over. Mullaney did not last long either, leg before to Sam Curran for five, 150 for 5, Hales 114 not out. Hales getting to 100 in 83 balls. Mullaney unlucky as he got an edge before the ball hit his pad. But with Read batting sensibly, Hales finally found a partner getting to 150 in 120 balls. Batty rotated his bowlers Borthwick was briefly recalled but Hales hit him for two sixes in one over. Every run was now being cheered as the Notts fans were in fine voice. Read finally fell to catch by Stoneman at deep square leg for 58 off 57 balls. It was left to Pattinson get the winning single with 13 balls to spare. Cue wild celebrations. Rampaul was the best bowler for the Brown Caps as the Curran brothers took a hiding. Although out fielding Notts, Surrey's bowling was impotent in comparison but this was Hales match and will linger long in the memory for the 17,000 in attendance. MAG

The twelfth member of the cup winning 2013 team, Jake Ball again cruelly misses out on playing in a Lord's final, this time due to injury. Stuart Broad is another doubt on paper but expect him to be fit the play.

The squad picks itself:

Michael Lumb
Alex Hales
Riki Wessels
Brendan Taylor
Samit Patel
Steven Mullaney
Chris Read
James Pattinson
Stuart Broad
Luke Fletcher
Harry Gurney

Billy Root
Brett Hutton

  2. Due to the circumstances and importance of the game and from the position in the game we were in with the top order all failing, possibly THE greatest one day innings of all time? This shows what Baz is(or at least was)capable of producing.
