Nottinghamshire not in talks with Nathan Lyon because...

08/03

Notts signed the injured Ross Taylor, for the first half of the season

16/02

Mick Newell lets it slip that Nottinghamshire are looking for an overseas batsman rather than a bowler.

11/02

No one appears to be chomping at the bit to make this happen.

02/02/18 As Nathan Lyon has remained unwanted by the flesh market of the IPL auctions, does this mean Notts will be signing the Australian?

His T20 credentials took another hammering against England with figures of 2-0-43-0 in T20 warm-up match in Canberra.

17/01/18

Nathan Lyon is in talks with Nottinghamshire as Australia’s Ashes winners seek to increase their experience of English conditions.
Off-spinner Lyon took 21 wickets at 29.23 runs apiece in the 4-0 dispatch of Joe Root’s team this winter but, having featured in two away Ashes defeats, is keen to fine-tune ahead of the 2019 series.
Last summer the 30-year-old got a first taste of the County Championship on a short-term deal with Worcestershire, deputising as overseas player while compatriot John Hastings was on Champions Trophy duty.

He contributed just six wickets in four appearances for the 2017 Division Two champions but is now expected to join Nottinghamshire, who also secured promotion to the top flight as runners-up, for a stint.
Its length appears to be dependent on whether he is bought in the Indian Premier League auction, having gone unsold three years in a row.
A core of the Australia team that are bidding to retain the urn next year by becoming the first from their shores to avoid defeat in England since 2001 – five series ago – have already signed up for the 2018 season.

Shaun Marsh is with Glamorgan, his younger brother Mitchell Marsh has signed a season-long deal with Surrey and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft has switched from Gloucestershire to Somerset.
Several peripheral players are also seeking deals in a sign of Australian determination to be fully prepared in 18 months’ time amid growing concerns of Ashes clashes being dominated by the home team.

Squad Additions? Standstill or Move Forward?
07/01/18

The 2018 season is slowly creeping up on us and Notts will soon be off on their jolly to South Africa to prepare in an outdoor environment. Since last season, the squad has seen two additions, experienced top order batsman Chris Nash and a bowler that bats a bit, in England Lion Paul Coughlin.

This time last year we had Michael Lumb, Chris Read, Brendan Taylor, Greg Smith and Brett Hutton, all now not available and most importantly at this stage last year, we hadn't found anyone to fill the void left by James Taylor's retirement either - have these vacancies been filled yet? That's 900-100 runs and 70 wickets (including Patto's haul) to find to stand still in 2018.

Coughlin should suffice as an up-grade on Hutton, however it still remains a disappointment that Brett had to leave to get a chance to play limited overs cricket - will Paul Coughlin be available for the business ends of the season or will injury strike or a floundering national side come calling?

Nash will be a good partner for Jake Libby at the top of the order in CC1 and should help with his stumbling development. One more lean season and the Cornishman will be trawling for an alternative employer, I suspect.  So Nash fulfils some of Lumb and BT's roles but not both's entirely and also gives Mull a chance to bat lower down the order.

Chris Read as a player can't be replaced, Mullaney will make the captaincy his own in his own style and we all will have to be patient with Tom Moores behind the stumps, who's in an impossible position. If Tom improves from game to game and season to season, then he should survive the matchly expected groans from the stands and the unfair comparisons to his predecessor, to become a Notts regular for seasons to follow. But who will bale Notts out of the mire with a heroic late order cavalry charge now Chris has gone, Captain Mull at 7?

Last season in CC2 we did the necessary job, just and scraped promotion, in some part by virtue of Northamptonshire's indiscipline in bowling their overs quick enough. In 2017 we had the best overseas player that we've had for ages too, James Pattinson, who contributed greatly to the points haul in first half of the season. We have added Mark Footitt to the squad since Pattinson flew south, but his availability remains a worry, can the army of physios that NCCC now employs get the guy on the pitch?

It's my belief that Billy Root will grow as a player and if given the opportunity, will replace some of the roles vacated by Lumb and BT, that Nash doesn't fill, but in CC1 we need to have replaced James Taylor too - we need to find a further 1500 more runs perhaps, so where are we going to find them?

Can Alex Hales step up? If he does, would England snap him up?

Will Samit continue at number 3 and thrive on the responsibility again? We need him to!

Riki Wessels sort of snook under the radar last season, did his job well with 3 tons but due to the lack of second innings opportunities didn't reap the weight of runs an average of 50 odd might suggest an ever present, top order batsman would deliver. If this he averages 50 (again)with 28 innings then there's 1400 runs, that's some way to finding the run total shortfall.

Back in CC1, the opposition will see Notts as a team to beat, so hopefully we won't be getting any of the poor no-chance-of-a-result wickets that travelling Notts were subjected to at places like Cardiff and Bristol in 2017. Notts' prospects in 2018 will weigh heavily on the September weather too, due to the ridiculous scheduling of the championship. Yes they need to build the carbuncle on top of the Radcliffe Road stand but do we have to have most  of our home games in the autumn, when everyone is back at work or school? At least spring scheduled games include play at weekends.

Does an attack of (four from) Ball and Broad (when available), Gurney, Wood, Coughlin, Fletcher, Milnes, Kitt, Footitt, Mullaney and Blatherwick plus the spin options, have the teeth to take the necessary (as many as) 250+ wickets, possibly, to survive in the top flight?

No doubt Peter Moores and Mick Newell are searching for an overseas player option or collection of options to last the season over the three competitions, but is it a batsman or a quick bowler that they seek? DDG

  1. Strange to see no comments on what should be a pretty important issue for Nottts fans.If I am honest I do worry about our strength in depth. On paper with everyone fit we look okay,Maybe not CC1 winners but good enough to finish in the top six.But as we all know a season free of injuries is very unlikely to transpire.

That being the case surely it would be prudent to look for another couple of reinforcement s.Certainly a Batman should be sought-after and ideally another bowler given how fragile Mark Footitt appears to be...

The choice of an overseas player is also important. It would be marvelous if we could get someone like James Pattinson,But realistically that's unlikely,Players that show Patto's level of commitment are few and far between,All I would say on an overseas choice is please no more Pujara,Great player but he seemed to be going through the motions a little for Nottts last season.

Perhaps though in our quest to strengthen our team we could have a look at the Kolpak market.I seem to remember our DOC saying they could be looking in that direction.Lets hope he can find someone that fits the bill,We might just need it....

  2. Pretty certain Ball will be available next season as any further involvement with England is looking unlikely. Good leggy, primarily for the shorter formats, would be good. Rashid Khan will do!

    1. Can you shed any light on the type of overseas player we are looking at Paul? I.e. a top order batsman or a bowler that can bat a bit? Or just a genuine bowler?

    2. It would be wrong for me to do so , but we are working hard to bring in quality players that will allow us to compete as well as progress the Younger Players on our Pro Staff

  4. Personally, when it comes to overseas player, commitment is everything as it rubs off in a positive way on the lesser and younger players. Pattinson was great last year and really lifted the team. Arguably, Andre Russell helped lay the basis for the one day successes in 2017 during his short but committed stint in 2016.

Leave the journeymen to others IMO.

    Cheers

  5. Talking to Nottingham Post, Mick Newell says:
We’ve talked about some Australians and South Africans. They’re the only players on our radar at the moment.

India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara will not be returning (suggests)

The IPL auction has become very important to players because they can make a lot more money for a stint in that comp than coming over here, a lot of players wait on that auction before committing.

It’s a lot harder to get players to play four day cricket when they won’t get as much money. It’s also physically and mentally harder work in the County Championship, never mind more time consuming.

We are suffering when it comes to finding players for the longer form of the game when T20 is such an attractive alternative.

We’re still looking, but the longer it goes on, the more settled English players are.

We have to keep an open mind. If a player turns up on our doorstep it’s great, but that’s looking less likely than we thought it would at the end of September.

We’ve said Kolpak wouldn’t be our first choice but we wouldn’t rule it out. We’ve tried to stick to one Kolpak and with Brendan leaving we have a space.
We don’t want two, three or four, but if a quality player became available we’d look at that.

  6. No doubt it will be tough in CC1 this season Can’t expect a quick fix to replace Read Taylor Lumb & Pattinson Hopefully Root Libby Coughlin & Moores Can step up But it’s asking a lot for all 4 to succeed I wouldn’t be disappointed to see Pujara again A class act

    ReplyDelete
  7. I can see signing players just for show not right, so if the right player not available who would add to the strength of the team, then OK no signings. However the o/s player, as stated above, is crucial. Also Samit can hold thinks tight as a spinner but takes few wickets in 4 day cricket. In effect we do not have a top line wicket taking spinner, and whether he comes from the squad or outside, it is a real hole that needs filling. Our fm attack OK, but similar pace, a quality spin bowler who could take 50 wickets would be ideal

    ReplyDelete
  8. Enjoyed reading your post, there is cause for optimism, but i am cautious to.
Overseas signing should be sorted after IPL auction
Talk was bringing in a Kolpak player too

  9. If Nathan Lyon is the answer, the question being asked is wrong.

A spinners graveyard Trent Bridge, if he takes some part in the IPL then he'll play most games at Trent Bridge on his delayed arrival. He adds little to the batting.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Nathan Lyon: He would be a great signing, but I remain very sore about some of his verbals to the media, but I guess that is not Notts' problem

    ReplyDelete
  11. This seems a bit of a strange one. Lyon was unsuccessful in his short stint with Worcestershire. He's had a very good Ashes here on bouncy and decently turning wickets but Trent Bridge? The feeling I have is that there's more gain for Lyon and Australia than Notts here, I hope I'm proved wrong if it goes through. I thought Notts would have been looking for other qualities from an overseas player to address their core team needs. What do you think?Sadly Lyon hit the headlines here for all the wrong reasons just before Christmas. He left his partner with whom he has two small children and taken up with a glamorous estate agent . One of his nicknames is Gary. I believe there was an AFL player by that name. Another nickname is Goat

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Trent Bridge is a spinner’s graveyard, As an illustration, Graeme Swann’s first class record at TB for Notts was 58 wickets @ 34.60 with a career best of 4-60. Not very good!

Lyon was excellent in the Ashes but I am not sure he would do well in England and Notts have said that “Gary” is just one of a few targets they have in mind. The Ashes series was another nail in the coffin for Test cricket where teams seldom win away. Australia can quite easily fit in a six week baseball tournament in their summer as the summers are long enough down under to still allow Shield cricket to be played in excellent conditions. Unfortunately in England the summer’s are a lot shorter and playing championship cricket in April, May and September will ensure that England will not produce fast bowlers nor spinners as the likes of Darren Stevens can pick up a stack full of wickets in conditions that help swing and seam. I see the Assassin of County Cricket Mr Tom Harrison wants to further reduce the championship to just 10 games presumably being played in Barbados, Abu Dhabi and Cape Town. What a pratt!

  12. I would much rather any Notts Australian be one of their three outstanding fast bowlers. However having sent Patto home in a state of disrepair I'm not sure their cricket board would trust us with one of their prime assets...

Still I guess there is no harm in asking...

    1. Looking at comments from Franksie on Twitter, it seems that Ish is their preferred man for #Blast as it looks like there's been an unofficial agreeent to have him back last year, with the support of the dressing room.

Franksie also appears to be favouring Goat Lyon as Championship and ODC overseas target.

On Lyon's form in England previously, he's an odd choice. If Trent Bridge isn't to be the usual seam paradise / spinners' graveyard, then perhaps the guy that made England's elite look stupid might be a good choice after all. If conditions remain the same as for the past 120 years, then he might just be another number 11 white elephant.

  15. Can't say I am sorry that we are not going to sign Nathan Lyon, Whilst I'm sure he is a fine player I doubt that Nottts would have got much out of him to warrant what undoubtedly would have a large salary.

It will be interesting to see which batsman we go for, Hopefully it's someone with experience of early season English pitches, , I would suggest Steve Smith but from what I remember of the last time he played here the moving ball presented him with problems he has not yet totally solved..
