Nottinghamshire Tour to South Africa 2018

Coach Peter Moores summarised the trip to South Africa in spite of several of the senior squad being absent, playing elsewhere.

The consensus from the trip, in light of Coughlin's untimely injury, is that some of the bowlers have stepped-up and improved their batting and that Luke Wood especially will be looking to claim a tag of being an allrounder. Any Notts eleven at the start of he season is however likely to contain an extra batsman.

Moores was particularly pleased with the progress of both Jack Blatherwick and Connor Marshall.

A Billy Root century proved to be in vain as Nottinghamshire lost a high-scoring 50-over friendly match with Yorkshire on tour in South Africa.

The left-hander plundered 117 from 130 balls to help Notts reach a total of 309-7 at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom.

But that total was chased down comfortably by the White Rose County when Alex Lees and Tom Kohler-Cadmore both struck powerful hundreds of their own as they cruised to victory by six wickets with more than 18 overs to spare.

As Notts batted first, Luke Wood fell for 1 from the fourth ball of the match as he nicked Tom Bresnan behind to Andrew Hodd and the same combination saw the back of Tom Moores (18).

Root and Chris Nash, who was the first batsman of the day past fifty, then took control and carried Notts from 31-2 to 178-3 with both men scoring freely.

Nash eventually fell in Harry Brook’s first over while Jake Libby made 25 before becoming a victim of Karl Carver.

When Root became a third dismissal for Bresnan, Notts were 280-5 and soon lost Matt Milnes who holed out off the bowling of Steve Patterson for 6.

But Luke Fletcher made 55 not out from 34 balls before Connor Marshall was run out from the penultimate ball.

In reply, the Yorkshire opening duo of Lees and Kohler-Cadmore hit the ground running and both flayed the ball to all corners before retiring having passed three figures.

Lees’ century came off 69 balls, while Kohler-Cadmore made 124 from 68 balls and when the former walked off, his side were 240-2.

Wood then struck twice to bowl Hodd and have Gary Balance caught behind by Moores, but it was to no avail as Brook finished with 52 not out from 31 balls.

Notts set off for Potchefstroom with twelve players, plus two others that will join the others there.

The squad are set to play two friendly matches against Yorkshire before returning on 18 March.

With Riki Wessels and Samit Patel playing elsewhere in the PSL, the available squad is rather bowler heavy and highlights the imperative need to boost the batting department before the season starts.
