Ben Slater Career so far

With the extension of the East Midland members reciprocal deal, to include Derbyshire during September, Derbyshire members can now come and watch Benny Slater for 3 games for nowt, if he makes the Notts XI that is.

The timing of Slater's "transfer" was a lttle odd, it happening on the day he retired injured at Hove after a blow to the head from a Jofra Archer delivery when on 40 not out.

That retirement, triggered former Notts staff member, Anuj Dal's batting as a twelfth player for Derbyshire (making a first class debut). That was the first 12th player in a game for Derbyshire in 2798 first class matches. Slater's departure also triggered further losses of wickets and a slide to a heavy defeat.

  1. So, the worlds worst kept secret is finally out as Slater signs for the green&golds. First class average nothing to spout about and guess is unproven at this level(Smith&Gidman to note), but let's hope the DOC can see something in him that's gone under the radar and he proves to be a decent option. List A record is good, so he can obviously play 50over cricket. Desperately needed a top order batter to sign, only time will tell if he proves good enough for us?

  2. Hopefully the first of a few new signings,Given the way we have played the last two CC matches we certainly need them!

  3. He's a very talented batsman, and has been devastating at times in one day cup. But has only scored three FC centuries, two in the same match against Leics in 2014 and one in 2016. He gets plenty of good starts, and looks very composed until he gets himself out in the 40's and 50's, usually caught at midwicket or point, often at really bad times, just before lunch or tea or immediately after a wicket's fallen. It's become so much a pattern that Derby supporters often start saying "time for Slats to get out now" and it usually happens. Most of us are pretty frustrated with this side of his playIt perhaps explains why Derbyshire let his contract run into its last year and weren't prepared to break the bank for a new deal. No doubting his ability, and scores a good volume of runs, but never in a way that creates a match-winning or saving position. It might be that a new approach will help him to deal with the temperament problem, but my fear is that he'll end up playing in the one day cup and otherwise a lot of second team cricket.

    1. You guessed it first time. It's an endorsement of sorts - you've got a top quality 50 over player who's proved it two years running, peripheral in t20, useful but not dominant in CC. You certainly need to show some patience in CC, bearing in mind he hasn't faced D1 bowlers (though he might still find himself facing D2 attacks next year the way that Notts are going). I recall James Taylor struggling in his first year after leaving Leics, and Chris Nash hasn't found it easy either. If he does turn into a run machine at Notts though, we'll have some very hard questions to ask about Derbyshire's coaching and support systems. A question for you, though. How did you miss Anuj Dal?

    2. Re: Anuj Dal: Notts first team in every competition is "cursed" with the fact that every game is important as we are challenging to win those competitions or in the case of CC either looking to protect CC1 status or win CC1; that means the myopic guys that pick the team are unwilling to take many chances on players coming through the 2s, especially those such as AD that doesn't have the weight of stats to back-up claims, regardless of how much talent they apparently have. AD is a good fielder but in spite of that never appeared be ever knocking on the door to force anyone out of the first eleven. Notts is a big club, or at least aspire to be one but those running it from the top can be a bit "village cricket" at times.
