Extras: Giving it Away and After 13 Games and is it all looking a bit grim?

Worcestershire needing a win against Essex
Day 1

Drop 5 batting points, skittled out for 94

Day 2

Worcestershire drop a bowling point and end the day still in arrears by 240 runs in the second innings with just 6 overs remaining. Target batsman (of Notts and other "bigger" counties), Joe Clarke at the crease.

Day 3

Essex won by an Immimgs and 129 runs, Worcester take just 2 points out of the game so are relegated.

Who will join them in the drop?

Extras in championship cricket in 2018

Given away by Notts

b 109, lb 175, w 33, nb 160 = 477

Given by the opposition

b 74, lb 195, w 22, nb 90 = 381

Overall we have given 25% more extras away

  • The bye count is 47% higher
  • The no ball count is 78% higher
  • The wide count is 50% higher

The leg bye count is 10% lower
Yes we've lost the best wicketkeeper that we've had in more than a quarter of a century but that's not going to account for the no balls or most of the wides.

5 Points to Division 1 Security

Whilst not wanting to be alarmist, Lancashire can reach a maximum of 136 points and Notts currently have 131 points.

Look below at the number of games this season where we haven't accrued the magical total of five points - seven occasions, half of the season.

Two twenty point wins for Worcestershire would put them on 136 also, so better wins than that on average are required by them.

Notts will end the season with more wins than both Lancashire and Worcestershire.

Will Lancashire gather a maximum points win - doubtful on current form, likewise with Worcester needing two wins which also isn't necessarily looking very likely, but Notts equally don't fill anyone with confidence. So who will drop enough points first so we can all breathe a sigh of relief?

  1. The no ball and wide count is a reflection of our wayward bowling

If you add byes and leg byes together then 284 plays 269, so Tom Moores iin his first full season is doing a reasonable job. Work in progress!

  2. How many extra wides would there have been if a certain left arm slingy pace bowler AKA "Radar" had played more games? Moores is certainly a work in progress with his keeping, but, he's only 21 after all.

  3. Feel a bit sorry for Ben Kitt, 100 wckts across all formats rightly propelled him to the fringes of the first eleven but unfortunately for him, then suffered an awful back injury. But, it sounds harsh but winning cricket matches is a serious business these days and you can't let sentiment get in the way of things(Gnasher excepted).

    1. I could never understand why Kitt was never selected by the Director of Cluelessness in that relegation season, when Notts couldn't score a run or take a wicket, and as you say , had bagged a ton of wickets for the seconds.

      Baffling.

    2. Too loyal to certain players or lacking the bottle/ strength of character to drop certain players - you decided.

The competitions are too short now to be sentimental about classy players being out of form and aren't performing - Notts have been hamstrung with a small squad (offering little alternative) and a player selection that is much too patient over far too many years. MN is responsible for the squad structure and depth (lack of) but he won't be carrying any cans.

  4. Yes, Stevo, our beloved DoC was very wary of giving young players an opportunity. He would never have played LJ in the last game, in my opinion. It makes nil difference now, but, Eartha Kitt should have played in that disaster season when he was in that sort of form. At least PM will give young players a chance to show what they can do?

  5. This is serious stuff. Taken together with overall rather lacklustre fielding and a dreadful run of injuries and one might be led to believe that the overall levels of fitness and training aren't up to scratch or are being overdone to the point where the poor body can stand no more.

Incidentally, my sincere congratulations to Luke Wood who bowled 6 overs in the T20 finals day and although he didn't take a wicket to go for less than 6 an over is a real real credit in such pressure matches. I'd rather him any day than ol' 10 an over.

    Cheers
    Chris S
