Class is permanent but form is "seasonal", it seems.
Notts have certainly struggled in the Championship since June and Luke Fletcher has certainly tailed off in his own bowling performances since the opening months of the season; the stats below highlight the true extent of the contrast.
Is it a dip in form, the baking hot weather, the change in opposition, the hopeless fixtures, the rock-hard roads they're playing on or a combination of factors that has left Fletch with Jekyll and Hyde numbers?

Whatever the cause of Fletch's nose-dive of personal performance; the team has mirrored it with its results. As MAG says the dip is alarming.
For a team of "black shirts" driven by numbers, you have to admire their patience and persistence with club hero Fletcher or does just highlight again the poor recruitment last winter and the lack of quality depth within the ranks of the club?
Bowlers get injured and need replacements or rotating in the first place before getting injured; then again some just do injured...
Thanks to MAG for the stats
Fletcher has still done a great job for Notts . Is he overworked though ? Which other bowlers are best placed to do the hard yards with him ? If the answer is hmmm...no-one really , well another Fletcher / Ealham type of experienced economical seamer needs to be recruited as a priority.
ReplyDeleteWould have helped somewhat if The Welbeck Wizard hasn't been confined to sick bay so much.
DeleteBut why are Notts so poor almost EVERY September? It's obviously not every county that runs out of steam after T20 has concluded, and it can't be our players as it's not the same squad since 2009, so where is this failing coming from? What or who is the common factor through-out?
DeleteThere's nothing outstanding in his stats but, personally, I think LF bowled well in the T20, which was obviously during July and August.
ReplyDeleteThe issue with Fletch has always been a lack of pace, which is crucial in 4 day cricket in division one.
ReplyDeleteYes he has had to take on a slightly increased work load, with injuries to other players, but as soon as the wickets get flatter mid season, he becomes a bit of a lame duck.
He can still do a job in some limited overs games, but realistically, his time is up when his contract expires.
The September record since 2009 has been consistently poor, not only losing but getting hammered!!! There MUST be a reason!
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a reason - or reasons - No cricket Committee; Senior management (Director of Cricket / CEO - the former is managed by the latter); Coaches (why did Notts let Paul Johnson go?); no bowler of Pattinson's ability to bowl out the opposition; adverse performances after injuries (Luke Wood, Stuart Broad); injuries; players coming to the end of their Careers; recruitement of untried and Second division players (Fraine; Slater etc)and players under-performing for whatever reasons. I then add that the way the ECB 'chopped up' the Season between the various Competitions was also unhelpful but all Counties had to deal with that. Notts have lacked a good opening partnership for many Seasons now and too many players seem to have been 'infected' by the T20 approach to the game lacking patience to play themselves in and establish a solid foundation for the bowlers to then exploit. Glad I'm not Director of Cricket or Head Coach though - on a hiding to nothing.
ReplyDeleteBut why the lack of form for all of the senior squad members for as long as it has been?
DeleteCan we have less games in September in 2019? Somehow I doubt it with the World Cup occupying TB.
You are correct that September Matches seem a problem but that applies to all Counties. This Season has seen the Championship Matches split between early and late Season - Notts did well earlier and so saved themselves from what ought to have been relegation. I blame the ECB and County Chairmen / CEO's for not listenting to Members and going down a dangerous path by a) in Division 2 not ensuring each Side plays each other twice b) seeking to introduce a new 100 ball Competition which no-one but the ECB and County hierarchy want and c) splitting up the Season so that the 'true gold' of cricket - the 4-day Game does not have an uninterrupted Season.
DeleteBrilliant Stats - what a Site!!! It ought to win an Award.
