As part of the club's transition, Billy Root too as left the Nottinghamshire. Root has signed a two year deal at CC2 Glamorgan.
This what the club Email to members says:
Nottinghamshire all-rounder Billy Root has joined Glamorgan on a two-year deal.
Despite having one year left to run on his current deal, Root’s playing possibilities were limited in 2018, and with the signings of Joe Clarke, Ben Duckett and Ben Slater, that was unlikely to change next summer.
Therefore, the decision was taken to give the left-hander an early release from his contract and allow him to join the Welsh county.
“We’re sad to see Billy go but understand that he wants more regular playing opportunities, something which has been hard to come by over the past year,” said Newell.
“He has the ability to play in all three formats, as he has shown during his time with us and I am sure he will relish his new challenge with Glamorgan.”
The left-hander made over 1,100 runs in his time at the Club, including centuries in both First Class and List A cricket.
His 133 alongside Chris Read in the final game of the 2017 season against Sussex, helped secure promotion from Division Two of the Specsavers County Championship and saw the Sheffield-born batsman sign his first professional deal.
Root is thankful for the opportunity he had to start his career with Nottinghamshire and is looking forward to his new challenge.
“I’ve had a brilliant few years with Nottinghamshire and made some great memories here - and I’d like to thank them for giving me my first opportunity in professional cricket,” said Root.
“I feel the time is right to embark on a new challenge and I’m excited to see what the future holds at Glamorgan.”
So the squad has been strengthened by 3 three batsmen only to then be reduced in size again by 3 - I fail to see how that solves very much. The problems of lack of competition and complacent, no fear of being dropped, batsmen remains. The quality might be net-slightly better but where is the competition for places or the cover for International call-ups or injury? Billy is a left hander, something we seem to have less of than other counties - is this true or just a warped tunnel-visioned perception?
Yes, I agree 100percent, I am not, personally, that bothered that Rooooootdog has gone, but, the quad depth is now looking short in numbers(and we all know what happened last season). Can only assume we have some targets lined up and Myopic Mick as he is now known, realises that this may be a problem...............dare not even mention the dreaded, evil, K....K route in this regard.
ReplyDeleteIt all seems so very short sighted to me, Come the end of next season and most likely we will be watching other results with trepidation
ReplyDeletePut simply we need numbers, Both Clarke and Duckett could easily be involved with England if they start well, And then where would be?
Okay, Billy Root was unlikely to be a regular in 2019. But as is mentioned above he would have he was cover and would most likely have had had a few games over the season.
Tbh you can't blame Root for moving on, Any player who wants to progress in the game would be silly to stagnate in the seconds,Hopefully he will do well, Glamorgan certainly need the help after their last season.
Maybe it's just me but there does appear to be an air of complacency about Notts ,Yes they have signed 4 players but it still feels like a job half done, Trouble is in cricket once the season starts faults that appear are difficult to remedy, Surely it makes sense to act now before we end up making a reaquiantance with Billy Root....
Agree with both comments so far. No depth and no batting competition in the squad. An injury and/or an international call up, and we are struggling to field 6 batsmen. Do we really need the money so much that we could release Root early.?
ReplyDeleteHas to mean a Kolpak and possibly an overseas batsman- that would add competition to the squad. The pipeline is dry from the second eleven so there has to be a plan to bring more in. .........
Post next years' World cup, might Alex Hales sign a new contract - returning to the red ball?
ReplyDeleteAgree completely re depth. Teams need more than 11 players! Particularly disappointed with this. Fraine was an unknown quantity, and Riki's Notts race was probably run, but Root should already have been playing more and should have been able to expect plenty more opportunities.
ReplyDeleteI hear that....(which is a prelude probably to a completely untrue statement) Hales likes being in Nottinghamshire/West Bridgford, so maybe post WC he would want to adjust his contract a bit like Rashid has done with Yorkshire (why they kept him is a mystery to me but there we are). Mind you, a good WC and he will probably end up globe trotting anyway and playing t20: A bad WC and will he be motivated to play the 4 day stuff?
ReplyDeleteAgain, we need to plan for the worst and not hope for the best, which is what the current squad numbers seem to be based on: Be nice to get Footitt fit and firing in order to enhance our bowling options, so that we can concentrate on boosting the batting....
PMs interview in the NEP to Matt Davies, acknowledges the squad was too thin last years which meant no competition for batting places, but this year hopes will be different after the new signings. However, Wessells, Fraine&Roooooootdog then all depart, so back to square one? So, presumably, then, we have a couple of targets lined up ? Most members thought we would bring an overseas bowler in, but, if no more batters are signed, do we have to look at an overseas batsman instead? I wish the DoC would come out and explain the strategy, as it's completely baffling to me
ReplyDeleteThere is not strategy, that is the strategy ........ that'll fool the opposition!
DeleteYes, the Director of Cricket SHOULD explain what is happening - after all it is the members who employ him! But - as I keep 'going on' - unless the Members get themselves organised then nothing will change and the 'tail' will continue to 'wag' the 'dog' - and what about whether the new 'cafe' will be available at a reduced rate to Members?
DeleteSurely there will be overseas batters a plenty looking to get used to English conditions ahead of the world cup? Judging by the ticket prices, I suspect the county games will attract similar numbers of spectators to the WC too - so the conditions will be hugely similar!!
ReplyDeleteIf Broad and Ball are available, add to them a fit Chappell then there isn't any need for a an overseas quick bowler at the start of the season. Post World Cup might be different.
DeleteThe dream of a season long overseas player is out dated, if you want a quality player, so it's time Michael earned his corn and got out his filofax of contacts!
You can get overseas players for the season... It's just that they are called Kolpak!!
ReplyDeleteTime to get your head out of the sand DOC and give the squad a little more depth..
Will there be Kolpaks when Brexit kicks in? Kolpak is consequence of an EU employment agreement with certain trading nations with the EU. UK plc won't have those agreements as yet. Should we ask Boris? Theresa will just dance around the issue and Jezza will say anything if it gets him votes.
DeleteHey, BIG Dave(and Stoney ALWAYS agrees with you)let's leave politics out of Nottsview..........but I get your point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone think that possibly the over budget(allegedly) Raddy Rd monster AKA the DEATH STAR, has drained the club finances and we just cannot carry a sizeable squad of players anymore, or as per usual I'm wide of the mark and talking cobblers?
DeleteThey are unlikely to admit that there are austerity measures in place, restricting employment due to over spending on grandiose, ECB led projects. More likely is that we've splashed the cash on new contracts and spent that budget already anyway.
DeleteYes its fair that the dream of a season long overseas player is perhaps a false one, and true that we seem to erring (I hope) more towards a batter in the short term anyhow. I read those interviews in the Post and they are totally anodyne and un-informative. Just cliché after cliché. That said, I guess negotiations etc could be compromised by going public too early.
