Shinwari is a 24 year-old left arm quick from Pakistan who has played at ODI and T20I level, including last month’s T20I series against Australia. He will play the first seven matches of the season before Gurney arrives to replace him.
Gurney, 32, is also a left arm seam bowler who played ODI and T20I cricket for England and currently plays for Nottinghamshire.
“I have watched the Big Bash with interest in recent years and I’ve been impressed with the quality of the competition,” Shinwari said.
“I’m hoping I can bring something different to the team with my bowling and help the Renegades push for success.”
Gurney made his England debut in 2014 and has played 12 matches for his country. He also played alongside fellow Renegades recruit Dan Christian last winter.
“Dan spoke very positively about the competition so to get an opportunity to come and play with the Renegades is something I’m really grateful for,” Gurney said.
“I’ve had a fair bit of experience in T20 cricket in England so I’m really excited to test myself in Australian conditions.
“I have admired the BBL from afar for a few years and am thrilled to get an opportunity to play in the comp.
“There is plenty of talent in the Renegades squad so hopefully I can come in and play my role for the team and help us have a strong season.”
Renegades Coach Andrew McDonald said the signings of Gurney and Shinwari balances out the playing list.
“We wanted to add in a left arm seam option to provide some added variation to our attack and Harry and Usman will certainly provide that,” McDonald said.
“They’ll complement our bowling unit really well and give us plenty of options throughout the innings.
“In the last few months we’ve been able to add in some established Big Bash players in Dan Christian and Cameron Boyce, some exciting international talent and some really promising young players.
“We’ve also been able to retain the bulk of last season’s squad so competition for spots in the final XI will be fierce.”

20overs is too long. It needs reducing to 100 balls with loads of gimmicks so it resembles nothing like cricket at all. That will bring the crowds&sponsors in
ReplyDeleteIf you say so Stoney. For the record, I actually get the countdown element of the 100 and there's no reason for it not to be given space on the scoreboard with prominence for the latter stages of T20 games, if that is what newbies need to be able to follow a run chase! For me, it works better than "required rate" which can fluctuate alarmingly at times when there's only 20 or so balls left, and is meaningless when say 10 runs are required with 8 overs left- 10 runs from 48 is much clearer to understand in my opinion and is more meaningful as no team is going to play out 8 overs at 1.25 runs per over (unless 9 down perhaps). It could also work in PP3 of the One Day Cup.
ReplyDeleteNow then 'Nottsviewer' let's try to work this out. 6 into 100 = 16.66666etc. - so 16.6 Overs!!! So, we need to get rid of the .6 - so let's reduce it to 16 Overs - or 96 Balls. So when there's 'only 20 or so balls left' and 'say 10 runs are required with 8 Overs left' then the Required Run Rate is either 10 from 48 (as your excellent mathematical brain worked out) OR 0.8 runs per Over - and guess what - it's exactly the same!!! And as the Notts Score Board gives a running accoubt of how many runs are required and how many Overs left there is actually no need for us lesser mortals to work anything out. BUT, YES, let's have a new Competition so that we can do exactly the same - play a game of cricket of lesser length which is really just shorter than the T20 / Vitality Blast - seems a real exciting idea to me - I think it's called "less for more" - LESS cricket for MORE money. Ridiculous!!!
ReplyDeleteI think you're missing my point. Newbies don't need to be confused with the concept of groups of deliveries aka overs, either in lumps of 10, 6 or whatever new brainwave that Harrison bloke dreams up next Thursday. What adds to the excitement / interest / entertainment, it could be argued, is the number of runs needed to be scored from the ever decreasing number of remaining deliveries. I'm in any way advocating a new competition, just suggesting a different way to present the data to the spectators; especially the newbies. Of course, aficionados will need to know the data of what bowlers have bowled how many overs etc but the newbies don't necessarily need that data.
ReplyDeleteIt could be done for any run chase, I would say, in any competition. After all is said and done, online live scorecards do this already in several cases, in closing stages of matches and what people new to the game need is continuity of rules and the way its presented, IMHO. Now that's another argument against the new 100 competition if anything I would say!!
100 balls has arisen for tv scheduling(terrestrial) is just convenient it has some meaning to cricket as Princess Pursestrings tried to tell the members. Cricket is a very confusing game to spectators new to the game with its terminology, field places and regulations etc, so I get the idea to get away from terms like overs etc and just have a countdown from 100 etc along with the other changes they are considering........it's just how much they are prepared to devalue the game in search of the expected coin?
ReplyDeleteStick whole Blast games on iPlayer, with expert commentary and explanations.
DeleteFor live events show highlights of the first innings followed by live coverage of the run chase. That will fit into the time schedules.
Similar airing got me hooked back in the day with the JPL.
That a very interesting idea BIG Dave G, have you thought of enlisting yourself onto the working party to talk a bit of sense into their heads?
DeletePeter Wynne-Thomas is due to appear on Bargain Hunt today (Friday 2 November) - you can catch him on BBC One some time between 12.15 and 1 pm, or later on iPlayer. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bqqr8h
ReplyDeleteBlimey - if 52k USD has bought DC for 4 weeks, that works out to £10k per week.
ReplyDeleteThat being the case, I wonder what we are paying for him!!
Hard to blame some players for plying their trade in this way.
Well done to the pub landlord, fully deserved. His form in t20 for the Outlaws has been consistently good. He had a shocker in the qtrs against the Wurzels, but every so often bowlers get nailed who bowl in the power play or bowl the death overs,so a good chance for him on a bigger stage. Interesting only 6 English lads picked so far and no Baz, or does this tournament clash with his other franchise commitments or nightclubbing duties? The two biggies for any white ball specialist are this one coupled with the IPL however.
ReplyDeleteInterested to hear the opinions from the locals on the new Mzansi Super League. I understand it's only 1 game in but what I've been reading on social media is not overly complimentary. Poor broadcast, average commentary, adverts every over. A crowd of 6000 at Newlands on a Friday night for the 1st game of South Africa's much anticipated equivalent of the Big Bash, CPL, BPL etc. I would love to watch for myself and make up my own mind but the channel that were given the rights to air in the UK are not even showing the games live but instead delayed from midnight to 4am. I hope I'm wrong and it's just teething problems, please tell me I am?
ReplyDeleteSmitty I was at the game last night. Tickets are cheap and allows for a crowd pull. The atmosphere of newlands 10years ago is back. A sense of cricket culture and the birth of new household names is what's happening. Out with the old and in with the new. My point is that over the last 5-8years you know domestic games have been poorly supported from the locals. Durban the worst of the lot. Last night was the most people I've seen at a cricket game at newlands for a VERY long time. And SABC being the broadcaster is to again attract the crowd that can now afford to go to the grounds. SS may have the great quality commentators. But the majority do not have DSTV never mind the full package. Make is accessible to all and not a select few. The point is not to watch on your TV. But to get to the ground and enjoy the game live. This tournament will pick up and new stars will be born. We are playing catch up to the rest of the world. Let's get bums on seats create some revenue and then talk about Million rands marketing schemes to compete with IPL and BPL.
DeleteThe Emirates new T20 League has been scrapped, due to lack of take up of franchises. The short form bonanza could be coming to an end . Thoughts ?
ReplyDeleteIt's always been a chimera. The bbl and cpl both lose money, the sa tournament was abandoned, the ipl manages to maintain a pathetic 8 franchises in a country of 1bn enthusiastic cricket fans. The only even vaguely successful T20 competition is the blast.
DeleteWhy don't they try a 100-ball Competition!!!???
