Circus News II

17/02/19

Harry Gurney's great line and variety, conceding no boundaries in his 4-0-20-1 and Dan MotM Christian's death bowling wickets 4-0-33-2 and late innings runs 38*(2 fours 1 six), saw Renegades reach a 13 run victory in the Bash Final against Stars (Jackson Bird 3-0-25-2, 4*).

At 93/0 in the 13th over, needing just 146, Stars would have expected to cruise to victory...

15/02/19

India A easily dispatched England Lions for a comprehensive win but not before Ben Duckett finished off the tour with another 50.

Dan Christian guided Renegades to a win today (yes the Big Bash is still dragging its feet) with a chasing 31 at the death against Sixers and into the final.
Harry Gurney accounted for James Vince's wicket.

14/02/19

England Lions continue to struggle against India A. Last week Ben Duckett did manage a nice 80 and Steven Mullaney 42 but the game was drawn with the Indians again dominant over the 4 days.

In the current 4 day game, Lions were rushed out for just 140, the Notts pair of batsmen out in the teens whilst young Chappell made a duck.

However, Zak Chappell, appears to continue to look impressive (on scorecards at least), in alien conditions with ball. In the latest innings, India A's 392, he took 4/60. Hopefully he'll prove a handful for batters at Trent Bridge in April.

9/02/19

Short-term Outlaw, Tamim Iqbal won the BPL for his team Comilla Victorians with a 141* in the finale match.

Of the Outlaws and former Outlaws playing in the tournament, Tamim was also the highest scorer.

Tamim Iqbal      467 runs at 38.91 av    HS 141*
Alex Hales        304             43.42                100
Andre Russell   299             33.22                  46
Brendan Taylor 210             35.00                  50

30/01/19

In the last of the one day series, England Lions squeaked home with a win, largely down to Ben Duckett who shepherded the tail, taking the tourists to a one wicket win, with 70*.

30/01/19

Renegades got back to winning ways; Outlaws Gurney and Christian were particularly frugal with combined overs of 8 -0 - 30 - 2 to give a 27 runs victory in another low scoring game.

29/01/19

Poor ol' Matt Carter got cartered in his second game against a dominant India A, whereas Steven Mullaney was more economical and scored a 50 in a losing cause.

27/01/19

Congratulations to Matt Carter on his Lions debut and his 2/23, but similar result to all recent ones for Lions in India.

Statistically, Zak Chappell is disproportionately expense compared to everyone else in these games but things can be lost in statistics...

looking forward to seeing him in green and a gold, in the cold of April.

As England make a complete hash of the first test in the West Indies, Alex Hales who turned his back on the red ball game last year for his World Cup preparation, smashed a 48 ball ton for Rangpur in the second tier T20 competition, BPL.

Duckett and Chappell must be getting used to being stuffed in the white ball game against India A. Matt Carter found out today that he will now stay in India for the red ball stuff, if he ever gets a turn to play!

20/01/19

Trent Bridge won't be crowing too loud about the club's Lions today as Lions were ushered out for a meagre 104 against a Board President XI in a one day game at St Xavier's College Ground, Thiruvananthapuram. Three Outlaws were taking part: Duckett 1, Chappell 0 and Carter 6.

The club will be crowing about this however

Steven Mullaney has been added to the Lions' squad, which is rapidly turning into a Nottinghamshire training camp by proxy. As is now Lions' tradition, a Notts player has picked up an injury on tour. On this occasion, the Mull is replacement for the replacement of clouded withdrawalee Joe Clarke, Tom Moores. TM is expected to out for 2 - 3 weeks with a leg injury.

16/01/19

Harry Gurney and Dan Christian again produced controlled overs. In a low scoring match HG returned 1/24 from his 4 overs whilst allrounder DC put in a half ration of 2 overs with a return of 1/12. Stand out Renegade bowler was Afghani Mohammed Nabi 4/25. Tom Cooper with 49* made sure Renegades reached their modest target of 116 with 7 wickets to spare, just like that!

13/01/19

Gurney does his job but...

In what could have been a mammoth 210+ total; Harry Gurney showed his skills as a death bowler coming back from his 0/20 from his powerplay brace of overs to finish with death overs (17 and 19) going for 2/17 when Heat had 9 wickets in hand with perfect platform laid. Dan Christian also bowled well returning 2/24 from his 4 overs (including over 18). Heat's 192/4 was still plenty as the limitations of the paperweight Renegades' batting became obvious, yet again. Lacking any quality the Melbourne side were reduced and restricted to 50/5 when Dan Christian arrived at the crease with 10 overs left - not Dan Christian's strength with so many overs left being a finisher not a builder. 66/8 Harry Gurney would have been padded-up with 5 overs left. Harry Gurney indeed batted, making 1* as Renegades lost by 101 runs, all out for 91

12/01/19

James Pattinson will miss the rest of the Big Bash with a side strain.
08/01/19

In a slight change of pace, Ross Taylor and Ish Sodhi had were key players in a Kiwi ODI win over Sri Lanka today. Taylor scoring 137 whilst Sodhi took 340 in the 115 run win.

James Pattinson's two tight overs (1/6) and DLS were enogh to defeat Buttler and Root's Thunder by Heat.
07/01/19

Dan Christian rapidly and sucessfully brought victory home for Renegades today, playing at home in Melbourne against Hurricanes. DC 25*from 13 balls.

06/01/19

In his second game, batting at 3, Alex Hales made a 9 ball 15 runs for Rangpur Riders

05/01/19

In the Bangladesh Premier League, opening bat Alex Hales was out for a golden duck in his first game for Rangpur Riders

A Home Game?

Is Australia trying to expand the reach of their Big Bash by playing a game in Gold Coast, Queensland?

Fair enough you'd think, in Aussie terms Brisbane is just up the road (48 miles) but wait, it wasn't Brisbane Heat playing at all but Melbourne Stars listed as the home side. So if any of their young, new Melbourne-based audience had gotten hooked on their beloved Melbourne Stars and wanted to attend every home game this year, then they would have had a journey of 1061 miles each way - nearly 18 hours each way according to Google using the Pacific Highway. That's some nagging to get Dad or Mum to take them all that way - "are we there yet?"

Are they looking to relocate the Stars franchise to Australia's sixth largest city?

Future warning

Should we be prepared for similar shifting of locations once the new 100 starts but doesn't catch on at particular venues in years 2 -5 of the venture?

Alternatively if Trent Bridge remains a venue for one of the plastic 100 teams, will Notts Outlaws be forced to play all their One Day Cup home games at Grantham or Cleethorpes?

Renegades again lost the grip on a game that they had by the throat at an earlier stage (Dan Christian 1/7 from 2 overs; Strikers were allowed to take 20 + runs at the death - Shinwari losing control, perhaps when Harry Gurney has his turn... then another disaster of a batting power play, leaving Dan Christian batting in the 10th over again - DC failed as did Renegades again.

01/01/19

If Dan Christian is batting before the halfway mark of an innings, then you know it's not going well. And so it proved, Renegades struggling to make a score; DC top scoring with a patient 32 but 149 was never enough to set as a target for Stars who reached their victory with more than 2 overs to spare and 7 wickets in hand.

29/12/18

Dan Christian had an all round poor last game in 2018 on a "poor" wicket; going for 11.5 rpo in a low scoring game and only managing 3 runs in a strained run chase by Renegades against Sixers; only needing 133, the Melbourne side floundered and flailed their sorry way to 99/9 off their 120 balls. Sixers' Tom Curran 3/18 and 23*.

23/12/18

Outlaws' only participant so far, Man of the match Dan Christian was instrumental in getting Renegades over the winning line against Strikers with an unbeaten 49 from 27 balls, 5 sixes and 2 fours.

20/12/18

Dan Christian 3-22 for Renegades in a win over Scorchers

Harry Gurney Leaves Notts with a Black Hole to fill

Pub-chain part-owner Harry Gurney will not only leave the running of the business to his partners but will also leave Notts without his services for the entire One Day Cup tournament in 2019 as he was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for £85K.

Next year's IPL will run from the end of March until 19th May.

Alex white ball Hales again went unsold, as he continues (by design or otherwise) to keep all his golden eggs in the World Cup basket. England players will return from India on 25th April for World Cup preparations, so Alex is likely to be available for at least 3 ODC games.

Filling the hole left by Kolkata

Will Stuart Broad be available for ODC action or will he be rested following his probable activity in the West Indies?

This year's Big Bash League in Australia will feature a flip of a bat to replace the traditional coin toss.
Captains will choose between "hills or flats" instead of heads or tails to decide who bats first.
BBL officials said the bat used for the flip had been modified to promote an even result.
"For me it's a great moment which reflects what BBL is about," Cricket Australia's head of the Big Bash League, Kim McConnie, said.
Cricket's coin toss has been a topic of discussion in recent years with suggestions it should be abandoned to allow the visiting team the decision to bat or bowl first.
Plans to remove the coin toss in Test cricket to reduce the degree of home advantage were backed by the England and Wales Cricket Board in May.
The flip of the bat derives from backstreet cricket and Ms McConnie said: "Some people don't like change but I'd also challenge people to say when was the last time anyone watched the coin toss or really focused on it?

"We are making it much more relevant to families, we are creating a moment which is much more fitting with kids."

  1. Samit Patel and Dan Christian also went unsold. Alex clearly vastly over-rates himself to the point of apparent super-arrogance.

    1. Doesn't the cattle market (IPL) have some more rounds of auctions soon?

  2. It could be argued that dear old Baz, merely a couple of seasons ago was amongst the very best white ball players around the globe in all formats. Is it ironic, therefore, that he has not been sought after on a consistent basis in the two biggies out there, namely, the BB and the IPL? I personally was disappointed with his decision. The problem is cricket is/has already changed for good and we are seeing young players like Archer and Sam Curran secure their futures after just a short period in the game. You can't blame the players, who would turn it down, they're just very fortunate they are playing in this era.

  3. Brilliant news that Matt Carter has been picked for the England Lions - well deserved and going to India will certainly mean that he will get even better.

    1. Credit to Zak Chappell and Leicestershire also getting selected for the tour in the New Year. Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett are no surprise really.

  4. Hales 🤣 Notts should release him from his contact, free up the salary for those committed to the Club.

  5. Isn't he on an incremental central contract now where Notts will get money back on Alex from the ECB?
The tester for Alex's committment to Notts will be post-World Cup or before if he doesn't make the cut for selection. He's got the produce the goods in the first 2 or 3 ODC games 2019 - the pressure is possibly on him.

  6. I think he's pretty certain to make the squad but it seems to be 2 from either Baz, Roy and Bairstow and at the minute Baz is the one that's left out.

In a bizarre sort of way I was almost 'clinging' to the idea that Baz was now playing so called second tier T20.However, I note he has opened with the 'Universe Boss' so I am wondering now whether these more minor franchise leagues are now becoming more prominent than we originally thought, certainly in Asia at least?

    1. If IPL and Big Bash remain the model, then anything else taking place concurrent with either of those is certainly second division. What the ECB want to achieve with NOB Comp is to eclipse the CPL to be the competition of choice worldwide in months July and August.

  9. Rather agree with Unknown ! To me this year the Big Bash is massive overkill, with crowds sharply down.

'Arry gets plenty of stick from the TB faithful, but he's developed into one of the best T20 bowlers around these days to me. Can be a bit hot&cold in red ball, but, he has to be one of the DoCs better signings. Saw him on Lady Bay playing for Leics 2s and no one would have predicted the career he's having?
