a statistical look

On Friday 3rd May 2019 Notts will play Durham at Gorse Lane, Grantham in a 50 over Royal London fixture. This will be Notts’ first competitive contest on the ground. One previous List A fixture has been played at the venue Lincolnshire defeating The Netherlands by 95 runs on 16th May 2000 in a 50 over 2nd round Nat West Trophy tie.

Notts have a good record in competitive matches in Lincolnshire, standing at: played 11, won 6, lost 3 and drawn 2. The two draws were 3-day first-class friendlies against Sri Lanka at Chichester Road, Cleethorpes in July 1984 and August 1990 respectively. Ten of the 11 fixtures have been played at this venue, the one exception being the 4 wicket victory at the Lindum Sports Ground in Lincoln on 7th May 2003. Notts in trouble in the 50 over Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy match at 125-5 chasing the Lincolnshire total of 279-7 (former Notts man Mark Fell hitting 77) were indebted to a List A best 84 not out from current assistant coach Paul Franks. The other “away” game played in Lincolnshire occurred in their first ever visit on the 6th May 1972 where Minor Counties North were defeated by 55 runs, man of the match Garry Sobers hitting 97 not out and taking 1-21 in a 55 over Benson and Hedges fixture. Notts have won 5 of their 7 List A matches in the Imp County, the other three wins being versus Middlesex by 4 wickets (4th September 1983 – 40 overs, Hemmings and Kevin Saxelby adding an unbroken 69), Yorkshire by 5 wickets (30th July 1995 – 40 overs – Paul Pollard 95) and Sussex by 46 runs (25th July 1999 – 45 overs – Jason Gallian 108*). The 2 losses were versus Lancashire by 25 runs (3rd August 2003 - 45 overs) and Durham by 6 wickets (1st August 2004 – 45 overs).

Notts have played two championship matches at Cleethorpes, Worcestershire (20th -22nd August 1980) scraping home by 2 wickets,  Younis Ahmed hitting 109 in a successful run chase with The Pears scoring 308 for 8 off 75 overs. The following season in Notts famous 1981 Championship triumph Hadlee and Rice ran amok with match figures of 8 for 69 and 7 for 80 respectively as Northants were rolled over for 85 and 181 Notts winning in 2 days (26th and 27th August) by an innings and 53 runs.  MAG

  1. With reference to good old Sax, does anyone recall a Sunday league game, I think from memory against the Pears where he bowled an over with 2 or even 3 wckts, certainly a no ball or two but went for about 25 to 30, most likely from Mr. Hick
