Lancashire RLODC at Trent Bridge Win

PATTINSON PROVES THE DIFFERENCE
With a Five Star Performance
Notts scraped home by 11 runs in their opening Royal London fixture in front of large Good Friday crowd enjoying uninterrupted sunshine. Notts scored what seemed an unassailable 417 for seven. Joe Clarke scoring a superb 139 the highest List A score by a Notts batsman versus Lancashire and first on a Notts List A debut since Brian Bolus scored one in the very first match in 1963 (a Gillette Cup tie in Middlesbrough). He was well supported by opening partner Ben Slater who made 74 (the first wicket added 197 in 27 overs), Tom Moores a ballistic 74 off 39 balls and finally at the end Luke Fletcher 46 not out off 17 balls.

Correction
Apologies are in order. I have  checked my records this morning.  Joe Clarke is the THIRD Notts batsman to score a List A century on his Notts debut. The second was Greg Smith who scored 124 in Surrey Semi-Final at the Oval on 7thSeptember 2015. He is though the first man to do so and finish on the WINNING side

Lancashire though we're not overawed by the target on a belter of a pitch. Led by skipper Danes Vilas with 166 (a Lancashire one day record)and supported by Steven Croft 110 Lancashire made a gallant attempt at the target. James Pattinson though proved the difference between the teams with a quite magnificent 5 for 61, his extra pace extracting life out of the wicket that none of the other bowlers on either team could obtain. In his first spell he removed Hameed and danger man Maxwell. In spell number two the well set Croft fell. Then in his third and last spell Bohannon and then crucially Vilas was removed out with his penultimate ball, the skipper forced to bring him back early; the talismanic Aussie being bowled out with three overs remaining. It was a true lionhearted performance. Jake Ball and Luke Fletcher held their nerve bowling against the Lancashire tail as they only scored 13 of the 25 required off the last three overs. Notts though were disappointedly indifferent in the field, with too many fumbles. Clarke missed a run out when Vilas had 70 and then Chappell having a traumatic debut going for two overs for 31, dropped an easy chance spilling Vilas on 128 in front of the members.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat. With Alex Hales unavailable due to personal reasons, Jake Libby making his List A debut was preferred in the line up to Chris Nash and there was a Notts debut for Zak Chappell and very welcome return for James Pattinson. Glenn Maxwell (Pavilion End) bowled a maiden in the first over, the only one of the contest. Slater and Clarke brought up the 50 partnership in 54 balls, Clarke hitting 14 off Mahmood's third over. Notts were 61 for one at the end of the first power play. Clarke got his 50 in the 13th over off 44 balls. A leg side four by Clarke off Bohannon brought the 100 partnership in the 18th over. Bohannon conceded 18 off his opening over. Keaton Jennings came on from the Pavilion End and a four through the vacant slip position by Clarke brought up the 150 stand in the 23rd over and his ton off 78 balls, 13 off the over. Next over Slater got to his 50 off 57 balls. A slower ball from Mahmood bowled by Clarke for 139 (99 balls – 17 x 4, 5 x 6); it beat his previous List A best by eight runs. It was an innings of high class with shots all round the ground. The first wicket had added 197 runs in 27 overs. Duckett scored 30 off 28 balls but then was dismissed hitting Maxwell straight to Villas at mid on, 246 for two in the 36th over. Mullaney hit a straight six off his ball bowled by Maxwell. In the next over Slater was caught at extra cover by Jones low down off Onions for 74 off 82 balls (8 x 4), 254 for three. Parkinson returned from the Radcliffe Road End and was hit for 14 in an over including successive sixes for Moores, 293 for three off 40 overs. Mullaney and Moores achieved the 50 partnership in 33 balls. Mullaney was then caught at short fine leg by Parkinson off Onions 19, 312 for four. A massive six into Fox Road off Onions saw Moores to 50 off 27 balls. Parkinson held one back and Patel (17) was well caught on the mid wicket ropes by Rob Jones, 349 for five. Moores brilliant innings came to an end when he was bowled by Mahmood for 74, an innings which contained eight sixes and three fours off 39 balls. Parkinson bowled the 48th over to Fletcher but kept dropping short; end result 6466.6, 28 off the over. Bohannon bowled the last over which contained 4 separate wides. Fletcher finished on 46 not out off 17 balls with five sixes and two fours. Pattinson (3) was bowled middle stump off the last ball as Notts closed on 417 for seven including twenty sixes. Despite the huge score, Lancashire’s ground fielding was excellent throughout the innings.

Fletcher (Pavilion End) and Ball (Radcliffe Road) opened the bowling in the Red Rose reply. In the fourth over, Jennings mistimed a shot off Fletcher and the ball went to into orbit and Fletcher took the catch on re-entry. The left hander out for 6; 13 for one. Lancashire reached 50 in the 8th over via a Fletcher no ball. Pattinson came on in the 10th over, Hameed hit his first two balls for offside fours. The third ball was a peach the ball moving off the pitch and with extra pace and bounce, Hameed was caught by Moores for 30, 71 for two. Croft raced to 50 off 26 balls as the high octane scoring rate was maintained, Chappell's first three balls going for 646, in an over costing 20. Pattinson though was proving a game changer. Maxwell making room for off side shot was fooled by extra bounce and he edged into Moores gloves, 113 for three off 14 overs. Mullaney replaced Chappell after a single over at the Radcliffe Road End. Croft should have been run out on 70; Clarke with all three stumps to aim at, missing the stumps. Chappell returned from the Pavilion End, but bowling too short again went for 11. He did not return. Welcome to the crazy world of white ball cricket at TB Zak! Better days will undoubtedly follow. Croft and Villas were smashing the ball to all parts as the 200 came up in the 25th over. Vilas got to 50 off 32 balls. Next over Croft got in his ton off 69 balls. Superman Pattinson returned with Lancashire 242 for three off 29 overs. he yorked Croft, removing his leg stump. Croft 110 off 82 balls (11x4, 4x6), 255 for four. With the first ball of the next over, Patel replacing the Captain had Jones (1) caught at mid wicket by Mullaney, 258 for five. Villas was still striking the balls well getting to his 100 off 66 balls. Lancashire stood at 323 for 5 off 40 overs; needing 95 off the last ten overs. Fletcher then got hit for 18, sixes for Vilas and Bohannon. Vilas was dropped on 128 at long off by Chappell off Mullaney, an easy chance. A full toss from Patel (1 for 69) was hit for 6 by Vilas to bring up the 100 partnership with Bohannon. With Lancashire 369 for 5 after 44 overs, the visitors will now slight favourites. Mullaney though had his last roll of dice as Pattinson returned. With his third ball he bowled Bohannon for 35, 372 for 6. Vilas got to his 150 off 93 balls off the last ball off Pattinson's over. Ball conceded five off the 46th over. Vilas then pulled Pattinson for sit into The Fridge off first ball of over 47. The fourth ball was hit over mid wicket for 6 by Vilas, but with his fifth ball Vilas was leg before to the Australian for 166 off 100 balls. The CRUCIAL wicket. Vilas 166 off 100 balls (13 x 4, 8 x 6), but somehow on the losing side. Fletcher conceded five off the 48th over. Brooke Guest was caught at long on by Slater off Ball, 399 for eight with 11 balls left. With his last delivery Ball (2 for 71) bowled Mahmood for 4, 401 for nine. Fletcher (1 for 85) bowled the last over that went for five, Lancashire 406 for 9, with 14 sixes. Notts had won a highly entertaining game where 823 runs had been scored and 34 sixes hit by 11 runs. Pattinson on his TB return was quite simply outstanding. MAG

Squad news...

Squad announced: I'd thought it could have been a 15 man announcement but I hadn't factored-in Stuart Broad not being included nor Alex Hales' absence, so here is the 14 man squad that includes both James Pattinson and Zak Chappell.

Ben Slater
Ben Duckett
Chris Nash
Jake Libby
Joe Clarke
Steven Mullaney
Tom Moores
Samit Patel
James Pattinson
Zak Chappell
Matt Carter
Luke Wood
Luke Fletcher
Jake Ball

................................................................................................
Scant comment from Trent Bridge so far: will Alex Hales play? If he's fit he has to! Will Zak Chappell play? If he's fit he has to. Will Paul Coughlin play? If he's fit...
Will Matt Carter play? After his run out with the Seconds and if there's not ill effects, he ought to.

This is the last year for a meaningful one day , List A  competition,
in this country and Newell and Moores have recruited with at least one eye to smashing it on paper.

It would be nice if at least one youngster could be accommodated into the eleven, Lyndon James or Liam Patterson-White for example as there is so much available firepower in both batting and bowling departments. There could be a case for Jake Libby to reinvent himself yet again or give Chris Gibson a chance with an eye towards a time when England Lions call-up half our squad.

Jack Blatherwick is another name that is in the mix, but the make-up of the Second XI side playing at Wantage Road later day for their SEC match will be very telling.

Tough for Moores

Peter Moores' coaching, juggling and balancing skills will all be called upon in picking the eleven to face Lancashire (no Lightning) on Good Friday.

Later today England release the names included in their preliminary 15 man squad for the World Cup, Hales should be there but has little current form to back-up his stake to a spot in any final eleven.

Latest:

Alex Hales has made it to the three England squads announced today: The Preliminary 15 for the World Cup, the 17 to for the ODIs v Pakistan and 14 man squad for the ODI against Ireland and a IT20 against Pakistan. No other Notts players have been included at this stage.

Strongly fancy our chances in this comp.We appear to have most bases covered. This is assuming dear old Baz hits some form and we can get Coggers and Chappell out on the field on a consistent basis.Duckett ought to show what a top quality white ball exponent he is and Joe Clarke is a quality player in all formats as we have already witnessed. It will be interesting to see if Steve can prep a belting track so early in the season with it being so dry. Last year he said he was unable to produce the surfaces of the year before as it was so wet early in the year. We ought to be able to outfire teams. The squad will be interesting and whether Stuart Broad will be available again like he was two seasons ago. Whilst it true Baz almost single handedly won us the Lords final Surrey were on for a monster before Broad&Patto were introduce into the attack

No Broad. Is that a surprise or not? Let's hope it's nothing too serious with regard to Baz. Surely this cannot be the same injury to Coggers that he sustained attempting a low catch in the deep as he continued to play the next one&a half days giving the impression it wouldn't be too serious. So no Broad,Hales, Coggers or Gurney, I guess this why you need a decent sized squad to compete on all three levels these days.

    1. According to the ECB press release back in March, Stuart Broad has not been made available to play in at least the first four One Day Cup games. Alex Hales was also only due to be available for the first four games before joining up with the England squad.

    2. Perhaps you, TC, could ask Officer Dibble when Paul Coughlin's finger will be healed. He played the day after he sustained the injury after all is said and done, as brum, brum the leader of the pack points out.

  3. Perhaps someone can answer the question why James Anderson is available for Lancashire and why Broad has to sit out 4 games.
Hales not available with no explanation-sounds serious.

    1. Only the bean counters at the ECB will be able to answer that one. James Anderson was only due to be available for Lancashire in last week's Championship game at Middlesex but he also turned out against Loughborough students as well as Wednesday's RLC game. I suspect that after playing two back-to-back CC games as well as the MCC curtain raiser game in the desert that the ECB want to rest Stuart despite the next England test match not being until the end of July.

    2. Cos Anderson is 'ard and Stuie is fragile obviously

  4. Samit Patel called that a great advert for 50 over cricket; trouble is that is just like advertising Woolworths - it'll be all but gone next year, saddly.

  5. Great match and the right result from a Notts POV Great bowling from Patto added to a fine batting display made for an enjoyable day in beautiful weather..

You might notice there was no mention of Notts fielding, We may have spent a lot of money on strengthening our side,Trouble is none of the four newcomers are noted for their fielding,Dropped catches, Missed stumpings all add up to a worrying day at the office for the Outlaws.

Notts need to remember "Catches win matches"...

Yes it left me a trifle drained also Zanga but what an incredible day. Everything right really, bank holiday, Notts@TB, loads of entertainment and lovely and warm as a bonus. Yes the fielding was not great and Lanky's running between the wickets was superb. Memories went back to the game against Northants a few seasons ago with this one. Difficult to comprehend that you could lose a game with such a monster score but without the brilliant wicket taking ability of Patto suspect we may have done so. One slightly puzzling aspect is the team selection. If we play Libby but are only going to bat him strategically we are effectively going in to a game with 10men a little like the Sam Wood situation in T20. Should we not be getting Matt Carter into the side in this case and providing an option to the Captain when everyone apart from Patto is being flayed on that batting 'road'? But overall a brilliant effort from the classy Joe Clarke, Moores and BIG Fletch at the end. You also have to give Lanky a lot of credit for not self destructing when attempting to chase down such a biggy and very nearly overhauling our score. An incredible day overall. Looks a complete mis-match on paper tomorrow but you know what they say about that

  7. What a match! A perfect spring day at the best English ground. Patto was heroic - getting five for on that batting deck - stunning. Slats played a great hand as support and Moores and Fletch were brutal. But the stand out for me was Joe's sublime 139. Sheer beauty, class & timing

  8. Does any know why Alex Hales didn't play, not that he was missed much?

  9. Hales "made himself unavailable for selection for personal reasons and no timetable has been set for his return to action".

  11. Great game, a true nail biter for sure. Ahh I only wish that Jimmy Pattinson had been born in Sneinton or St. Annes (or elsewhere in Notts) so we could have him all the time.

    1. or not once ECB get their claws on to him. Patto was a class above every other bowler on show yesterday. Hopefully Chappell will be the better for the "match practice", that he has been denied prior to that runfest. The only way is up for him.

So you could change his name to Yazz and the Zaktic population then? Felt for him spilling that catch in the deep his confidence must have been shot to bits but England Lions players are quality exponents and I'm certain he will be a good asset provided he keeps fit

  12. "To have over 800 runs scored in one day in April is astounding, so credit to the groundsman and credit to the batsmen as well. It's quite unbelievable.

"50-over cricket has now become an extended version of T20. Some of the six-hitting was exceptional. There was a lot of work for the bowlers to do to try and stay in the game.

"The interesting thing was the way James Pattinson changed the game. Every time he came back on he took wickets and but that changed the game in our favour.

"At one stage, when Vilas was playing well, it looked very difficult but that's why you sign the world-class players."
