Yorkshire Vikings RLODC at Trent Bridge Win

SAME PITCH, SAME RESULT, BUT DIFFERENT KIND OF GAME
as Outlaws go 5 wins from 5 games after Tykes crumble

Notts made it five wins out of five after a comfortable 4 wickets win over Yorkshire today with 15.3 overs to spare. It was family fun day with a £1 admittance charge, although the crowd was officially given as 14,478, presumably based on tickets sold, the actual attendance appeared to be half that number. After a cloudy morning and early afternoon with a northerly breeze, the sun shone later as Notts produced a very efficient performance as Yorkshire wilted after a good start. Visiting skipper Steve Patterson elected to bat on the same strip as used in the Leicester run fest, and although Yorkshire got off to a good start, being 112 for one in the 16th over, they fell into the trap of playing too many cavalier shots against the accurate Notts attack and lost their last nine wickets for 101 in 26 overs. Once again Carter impressed with 8-0-36-2 bowling 4 of his overs in the first power play and was well supported by Ball (3-32), Fletcher (2-36) and Pattinson (2-42). Yorkshire 213 all out out with 46 balls unused. Unchanged Notts chasing an easy target, once again started excellently with an opening stand of 75 in 11 overs. They then had a slight wobble losing two wickets in two balls to the brisk Pillans. Standing at 121 for 4 after 18 overs, Notts faced no run rate pressure. Patel and Mullaney slowed the tempo down for a few overs, the experienced pair adding 63 in 12 overs. The captain was Notts top scorer with an unbeaten 54 from 58 overs (4x4, 3x6) as Notts accelerated to the finishing line.

The match when Fletcher (Pavilion End) was hit for four by Lyth off the first ball of the innings. Carter got a wicket in his first over with Kohler-Cadmore (0) holing to Duckett at deep mid wicket, 5 for 1.

Dropped chance

After four over spells, Fletcher and Carter were replaced by Pattinson and Ball. Ball got hit for a leg side six by Lyth in his first over. Going for a repeat shot Lyth was badly dropped in the same over whilst on 35, Clarke the fielder on the square leg ropes, Yorkshire 64 for one after 10 overs.

All change
Patel and Mullaney replaced Pattinson and Ball, both after two over spells which went for 17. Pattinson and Ball were much more impressive when they returned later. A swept six for Lyth off Mullaney brought up Lyth's 50 off 44 balls, the Yorkshire 100 achieved in the 14th over. Mullaney went for 17 in his solitary over so back came Carter who made the breakthrough as Brooks, going for leg side hoick, was bowled for 39, 112 for two. This dismissal changed the course of the game.

A couple of balls later Lyth going for a cut shot edged Patel into Moores’ gloves, 112 for 3. Lyth’s 63 off 54 balls (6x4, 2x6) turned out to the highest individual score of the match. Leaning scored 4 from 10 balls before mistiming Pattinson (Radcliffe Road End) to Carter at mid off, 122 for 4. Gary Ballance added 34 in nine overs with Jonathan Tattersall for the fifth wicket before being well caught by Carter right on the mid wicket ropes, Jake Ball the bowler. In his next over, a short delivery from Ball was pulled by Tattersall (19) and Duckett ran in and caught him at deep mid wicket, 164 for 6 in the 30th over. A five ball duck for Pillans followed as he departed caught by Clarke at extra cover as Ball picked up his third wicket, 171 for seven. Fletcher yorked Patterson (6) removing his off stump, 199 for eight. Waite who scored 32 off 35 balls made room, but Pattinson was too good and too quick for him as he lost his off stump, 205 for nine. Fletcher picked up the last wicket as Poysden was caught by Moores for 1. Yorkshire 213 all out off 42.2 overs.

Steady start
Nash hit two boundaries in the opening over bowled by Waite from the Radcliffe Road End as Notts made a steady start. Patterson came on for Waite in the fifth over. Nash and Clarke were making untroubled progress with 50 achieved in 45 balls as Olivier went for 16 in his third over. Notts 72 for 0 after 10 overs.

A touch of brilliance

A brilliant one handed catch low down to his right at mid on by Matt Pillans removed Nash for 35 (44 balls, 4x2, 2x6), Patterson the bowler, 75 for one off 11 overs. Duckett had a 14 ball cameo of 21 (3x1, 1x6) before chipping Pillans to Ballance at cover, 98 for two. Libby fell first ball to Pillans, caught behind by Tattersall off a short brisk ball. Patel played himself in, before hooking a short ball from Pillans for six over long leg. Clarke (40) was out in the same over leg before to a well pitched up ball from Pillans, 121 for 4. Mullaney was dropped on 19 by Kohler-Cadmore at mid on off Poysden. The leg spinner only conceding 20 runs off his seven overs. Leaning went for 19 off his second over from the Radcliffe Road End. Waite replaced him for the next over and Patel (36 off 54 balls) edged him into Tattersall's gloves, 184 for 5 in the 31st over. Next over Moores hit Waite four and six. Then the next ball from Pillans was hooked for six by Mullaney, then three balls later Mullaney once again cleared the ropes. Pillans figures had taken a bit of battering as he finished with 3 for 57. With just three needed Moores perished skying to Olivier as Waite picked up his second wicket. It was left to Fletcher to hit the winning runs as the large crowd went home happy. A very successful day on and off the pitch for Notts who continue to look impressive in this competition. At least the weather is brighter than yesterday. The sun is out at the moment but there is potentially more cloud this afternoon.

Family Fun Day has meant that today is a technical sell out, but how many make full use of their £1 tickets remains to be seen.

Outlaws will be looking to add to their 4 wins from 4 starts in this year's cup whilst Vikings will be trying to climb the table after their second of two ties  this season has kept them at the wrong end of the league.

...............

So unless Peter has been smoking some of Alex's stash, the usual 14 player squad will form the basis of his calculations for final eleven on Sunday.

Ben Slater's quad tweak might keep him out but Nash made an adequate replacement against a weak bowling attack on the Trent Bridge road on Friday.

With the club's announcement of the squad, it's clear that Slater's tweak remains so Lyndon James comes into the 14.

  1. Today's match coincides with THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SUNDAY LEAGUE - a league the 'mass killers' John Player & Sons sponsored for some 18 Seasons. Whatever one wants to say Tobacco sponsorships of Sport were a sinister method used to make smoking look 'cool' and to hook more people onto this deadly habit - the legacy of which remains particularly active in perhaps every Country in the world. I continue to regret that Notts have paid honour on Kenneth Clark MP - who for years was on the Board of British American Tobacco - he was Deputy Chairman and a Director from 1998-2007. Ironically his wife died of cancer in 2015. The hypocrisy of him having been Minister of Health defies words. So do I think sport should glorify the John Player League? - ABSOLUTELY NOT - it was part of a movement that resulted in untold numbers of deaths - a sad legacy that still remains to this day.

    1. No blame attached to Sir Walter Rayleigh then? I feel vindicated in that case.

    2. Rather different - he didn't have the knowledge that Kenneth Clarke etc. had / have. The shame is that the Government is still happy to take the taxes from tobacco.

Attendance figues would have had to include many absent Members I presume as the Health & Safety requirements would limit attendance and Members could not be turned away. It would be intersting to know how many 'clicks' were registered of people actually entering the Ground. Anyway, well done Notts.

    3. Would you ban the greatest killer drug of them all, alcohol? Or if chancellor would you continue to collect taxes on it?

Prohibition worked so well across the pond.

JPL was a great competition and introduced many a young person to cricket on TV, including myself.

    4. So, 'AC12+1', you need to separate out the 'Game' from the 'Sponsor' - and it is not just cricket but as Notts are researching and recently had a small display about this Sponsor it is legitimate for those of us who hold strong feelings to be able to express them. The huge difference between alcohol and tobacco is that tobacco has NO health benefits even if taken in moderation - it is a killer and why, to keep smokers hooked, do the manufacturers include other dangerously addictive drugs in them? It is an evil Industry with no redeeming features whatsoever.

    7. Philip, you can't deny that John Player's in sponsoring that league in that era, revolutionised cricket in England, nor can you deny that John Player's used to be associated with, and were a major employer in Nottingham. So it's only right that the club did something to mark the anniversary.

Yes I understand your angle that tobacco is not to be recommended in a healthy lifestyle but the JPL was just a brand promoter just as the B&H cup was or Embassy in snooker. It never made me take up the evil habit and guess that the competition only encouraged (the then) current smokers to switch brands rather than entice others to be new victims to the addiction.

Good luck to your daughter in her efforts.

Notts are an excellent one day side with all bases covered especially while Patto is here.

  3. Now back to the cricket!!! Interestingly only Steven Mullaney is in the top 10 batting One Day Cup averages and there are no bowlers (Luke Fletcher is 11th)- so this seems to demonstrate that Notts. have a more 'rounded' Team and are not relying on individuals so much.
