Leicestershire Foxes RLODC at Trent Bridge Win

A SEXTUPLE OF FIFTIES SEES OUTLAWS GO 4 FROM 4

Notts maintained their 100% record in the Royal London Cup with a comfortable 87 run victory over visiting Leicestershire via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. On cool, windy day Notts posted their second highest ever List A score of 433 for seven, meaning Leicestershire had virtually impossible total to chase. Openers Cosgrove and Dearden added 106 for the opening wicket, but once Cosgrove departed in the 14th over with rain clouds slowly moving in, the result was a foregone conclusion, the target being reset to 347 off 37 overs after a 54 minute stoppage following a heavy shower. The Notts innings was very much a team effort as for the first time ever all the top six got to half ton on another batsman’s paradise. Clarke (55) and Nash (56) opened up with a first wicket stand of 108 off 14 overs. Duckett top scored with a 61-ball 86, Mullaney had the highest strike rate smashing 81 at 197.56 runs per 100 balls. Libby made his first List A half ton with 66 including three sixes, Moores chipped in with a typically aggressive 50.

Leicestershire won the toss and inserted Notts. The early morning sun soon evaporated and most of the day was played in cloudy, blustery conditions. Slater tweaked a quad in the warm up and in came Chris Nash. Jake Ball also returned for Zak Chappell.

Tom Taylor (Pavilion End) and Dieter Klein (Radcliffe Road) opened the bowling. Klein got hit for 14 in his opening over and 25 in his second, being hit for sixes by both Clarke and Nash, he was then replaced by Chris Wright. Notts got to 50 off 34 balls. Clarke was dropped on 26 by Horton at extra cover off Wright. Notts reached 82 for 0 at the end of the first power play.

Successive straight driven fours by Clarke off Griffiths brought up Clarke's 50 in 42 balls and the 100 partnership off 79 balls. On 108, Joe Clarke hooked Wright straight to Griffiths at long leg; Clarke 55 off 42 balls (9x4, 1x6). Griffiths dropped Duckett in his follow through when the left hander was on 4. A four through the covers off Griffiths saw Nash to his 50 off 46 balls. In Ackermann's third over Nash (56) swept him to backward square leg where Cosgrove took the catch, 143 for 2 in the 20th over. Duckett got to 50 in 41 balls with a pulled four off Ackermann. The 28th over went for 21, Duckett hitting Ackermann for five successive fours. A leg side six for Libby off Taylor brought up the 100 stand in 77 balls. Ben Duckett had a disappointing end when he flicked a ball from Taylor to keeper Hill to depart for 86 off 61 balls (12x1,1x6), 249 for three in the 33rd over. The third wicket stand between Duckett and Libby added 106 in 13 overs. Another leg side for six for Libby off Taylor brought up his 50 off 45 balls. Libby smashed a free hit from Griffiths for a leg side six, but he was dismissed next over caught at mid off by Taylor off the returning Klein for 66 (52 balls,3x4,3x6), 294 for 4 in the 37th over. Notts ended the second power play on 333 for four. Klein then conceded 17 off the 41st over. Moores got to 50 off 31 balls. Not to be out done, Mullaney hit a six over mid wicket to reach 50 off 25 balls, Lilley going for 14 in his only over. Moores was caught and bowled by Griffiths for 50 off 32 balls (4x4, 3x6), 385 for five. The 5th wicket stand between Moores and Mullaney accumulated 91 runs in eight overs. Fletcher was out for a golden duck caught behind by Hill off Griffiths, 390 for six. Mullaney was dropped at long on by Taylor off Griffiths on 77. Mullaney was out next over, caught at long on by Lilley off Griffiths at 81 off 41 balls (10x4, 3x6), 417 for seven. Notts closed on 433 for seven Pattinson 13 not out and Patel a subdued 6 not out off 12 balls. Klein 1 for 93 off 9 overs and Griffiths 3 for 92 off 10 overs. It was once again carnage at Trent Bridge as all the batsman cashed in.

Fletcher (Pavilion End) and Carter (Radcliffe Road End) opened up. Jake Ball replaced Carter for the sixth over. Cosgrove and Dearden got off to a brisk start with 50 coming off 42 balls. Cosgrove was bowled off a free hit off Fletcher. Leicester stood at 81 for 0 after 10 overs, 11 ahead of DLS par score. There followed a long stoppage as Moores was treated for a facial injury and he left the field as Duckett took over behind the stumps.

Cosgrove got to his fifty in 38 balls and Leicestershire reached their 100 in the 13th over as Mullaney was hit for three successive fours. With rain appearing imminent, Cosgrove was leg before to Pattinson for 59 (43 balls,7x4,1x6), 106 for one. Leicester were suddenly behind the par. It got better for Notts as Ackermann played on to Mullaney on 13, 123 for two off 17 overs. Harry Dearden got his 50 off 51 balls; slow in the context of the match. Pattinson bowled a 6 over spell and was replaced by Ball as Moores returned to the action after 21 overs. Five balls later rain stopped play at 1649 with Leicestershire 152 for two.

Play resumed at 1743 with a revised target of 347 off 37 overs. Dearden (74 off 70 balls) skied a delivery from Ball straight to Libby at point, 169 for 3 in the 23rd over. Ball conceded 17 off the 26th over. Patel then conceded 12 off four balls but then a smart piece of fielding from Pattinson in the covers ran out Paul Horton who was sent back by non striker Hill. Next ball Lilley went for a golden blob, bowled by Patel, 210 for 5. Taylor (8) going for a scoop shot was bowled by the first delivery of Fletcher's second spell, 220 for 6. Two balls later Klein departed leg before for two to the Bomber, 222 for seven. Hill (21) swatted Fletcher to Patel at deep square leg who took a well judged catch, 225 for eight. Carter returned and bowled Chris Wright (8), 252 for 9. Parkinson (24) was the last wicket to fall being stumped by Moores as Carter picked up second scalp. Leicestershire 259 all out off 33.2 overs. Fletcher was the pick of the bowlers with 8-0—53-2. Another professional performance from Notts who fielded better than their previous three games; Yorkshire next up on Sunday. MAG

FOOTNOTE

The occurance of the top six batsmen all getting 50 runs in a List A innings is unique, in fact, any six batsmen scoring 50s is also unique.

The top 5 batsmen all scoring 50s has happened before:

The fives are
376-3   Central Districts       Otago           New Plymouth    1996/97
347-5   Pakistan        Zimbabwe                Karachi 2007/08
398     Northern Districts      Central Districts               Hamilton   2012/13
359-5   Australia       India           Jaipur  2013/14
378-6   Baluchistan     Khyber Pakhtunkhwa              Faisalabad      2018

Thanks to Phil from ACS for confirmation

As expected, the same Outlaws 14 have been named:

Joe Clarke
Ben Slater
Ben Duckett
Jake Libby
Tom Moores
Steven Mullaney
Samit Patel
James Pattinson
Zak Chappell
Luke Wood
Luke Fletcher
Matt Carter
Jake Ball
Chris Nash

Will Chappell play against his former employers?

Three from three so far for Outlaws who face Foxes on Friday. Expect the usual 14 as Paul Coughlin was unable to bat in his return game for the Seconds at York on Tuesday.

Alex Hales isn't able for selection for Notts on Friday but is able to attend an England training session on Saturday.

Leicestershire will be fresh from a last ball, rain affected defeat to Derbyshire on Wednesday and judging by the showery weather forecast for Friday, the Duckworth, Lewis, Stern Ensemble will be entertaining the audience after each interruption again.

Colin Ackermann is currently averaging 99.67 with the bat and has bowled 20 overs at 5.9 rpo

It's a good job we've got a strong Director of Cricket at the club with regard to the Hales' situation

    1. Is it time the club started being honest with the supporters, the public and the media now, 'cos they starting to look like mugs with the latest turn of events.

  2. Batsman Alex Hales will join the England squad for their pre-World Cup training camp in Cardiff on Saturday.

The 30-year-old has missed Nottinghamshire's first three One-Day Cup games for what the county described as "personal reasons".

Last week, Notts said that Hales had "made himself unavailable for selection and no timetable has been set for his return to action".

Hales will miss Notts' game at home to Leicestershire on Friday.

He was part of a preliminary 15-man squad named by England for the World Cup on home soil, which begins on 30 May.

All of the squad will gather in Wales, alongside pace bowlers Jofra Archer and Chris Jordan, who will have the chance to force their way into the 15 during pre-tournament matches against Ireland and Pakistan.

Eoin Morgan, who missed Middlesex's game against Surrey on Thursday with a sore shin, and opener Jason Roy, who sat out the same game after suffering a back spasm on Tuesday, will also travel.

  3. Hmmm, So AH is joining up with the England squad for their pre world cup camp.

Maybe it's just me but this all seems very convenient For someone who for some unknown reason feels unable to play for the club , Yet all of a sudden is ok to join up with the national side.

How will the selectors know what sort of form he is in? Notts certainly can't help them with that question.

As Dave quite rightly states it's time the club were a little more honest and forthcoming than they have been so far. It's not only the AH matter there are other matters we the supporters would like answers too, IE, How long will Couglin be out for and do the club plan a supporters meeting any time soon

The club need to remember that members are the life blood of this club, Keeping them in the dark is not the best way to make them feel valued...

  4. And it is OUR Club - so everything Dave and Zanga say is correct. There may be, however, personal matters that it is inappropriate to comment on but it does seem strange when you can't play for Notts but are available for England.

Unpaid leave ought to be the answer for Mr Hales. I wouldn't have either him or the pub landlord at the club as they are doing little to foster a healthy team spirit in the dressing room.

    1. Unfortunately Hales and Gurney are a product of the powers that be at Notts. There are those at the club that are in the vanguard of this engineered future for the sport domestically, the god-parents of the Hundred; nothing is going to change without a change of attitude at the top. Meanwhile the remaining players have rallied and united around a common cause - to stick two fingers up, metaphorically, at those that won't play the TEAM game for Notts. Well that's one interpretation of events but of cause the Notts website will welcome back anyone with a red carpet, fanfare and party poppers, even K (spit) P.

  6. Dressing room spirit not damaged at all, vast majority of modern players understand and are only biding their time and building their careers in order to do the very same thing and take the riches the short formats offer.

    1. That's a very disappointing state of affairs if true (not the dressing room at present), the riches of The Hundred will only open to a few. 85 out of the 18 full playing staffs. How many get the option to play in the overseas circuit - IPL, BBL etc? Very few, from the counties, indeed.

    2. Sure some won’t make it! As far as dressing room harmony is concerned there are many more things to worry about than a fellow professional’s career progression.

    4. Define making it: is it an England call-up? Is it winning the Ashes or World Cup with England? Is it winning a domestic competition with your county team mates? Or is it making a load of dosh, as quickly as possible and with the least amount of effort possible?

    5. Pretty well all on a par in the modern game. As far as money is concerned, most of us strive for financial security in our lives, nothing wrong with that in fact it’s a necessity.

  8. England's Alex Hales has been suspended following an "off-field incident", a spokesman for the batsman has said.

Hales missed Nottinghamshire's One-Day Cup games last week for what the county described as "personal reasons".

The incident happened last year, and the player's spokesman added: "While the issue is not cricket related, he accepted it was right he was suspended."

Hales, 30, will join England for a pre-World Cup training camp on Saturday.

He is part of a preliminary 15-man squad named for the World Cup on home soil, which begins on 30 May.

England's first match of the summer is against Ireland in a one-day international in Dublin on 3 May.

  9. The England batsman and World Cup contender Alex Hales is serving a 21-day ban from cricket for recreational drug use, the Guardian can reveal...

... All professional men’s cricketers in England and Wales – as well as centrally contracted women’s players – are subject to hair follicle tests at the start and end of every season that can detect substances in the system for up to three months.

The policy initially treats the issue as one that relates to health and welfare. A first offence is dealt with privately via rehabilitative support from the Professional Cricketers’ Association and the chief medical officer at the player’s county.

A second such violation has additional ramifications beyond rehabilitation, however, invoking a three-week ban and a fine totalling 5% of the player’s annual salary. It is only at this stage that their county is informed, as well as the ECB chief executive, Tom Harrison, and PCA equivalent, David Leatherdale.

As a centrally contracted England player, Hales will also have seen this information shared with Ashley Giles, the director of England cricket. It is only after a third positive test result – something which triggers a 12-month ban – that the ECB or the county can tear up a player’s contract.

Players are suspended from the date they receive written confirmation of a positive result and it is yet to be established when exactly Hales received notice of his second violation. It is believed he will have served his 21 days before England’s opening fixture of the summer against Ireland in Dublin on 3 May.

  12. The anger expressed towards Alex Hales and Notts is understandable - there are those of us who expect a higher standard of behaviour from Players - but are we being unrealistic? All that Clubs can do is to have agreed Codes of Conduct and Sanctions to be applied when they are broken. The law is also often seen as being quite lenient. The 'punishment' that Alex has received I see as being far worse in what it has done to his good name and character - he now needs to work hard to try to overcome it and he could start by demonstrating a greater commitment to Notts.

I can forgive any player if I think they are committed to the club but if Hales refused to help out at Hampshire last year when we had an injury crisis prior to a four day game that is more of a lack of team ethic which worries me more than the latest incident. I find the tweets of Harry Gurney very annoying as he copies Piers Morgan in trying to humiliate anyone who disagrees with him by picking holes in their grammar.

Someone doesn't seem to accept the point that correcting grammar continually is crass and rude. If that is your sense of humour good on you but that is not for me. Piers Morgan does write some brilliantly penetrating articles but no need for Harry to copy his put downs.

    5. Give me strength! This guy has a real thing about people he doesn’t like correcting other people’s grammar, strange especially when it probably represents only about 0.001% of their often constructive comments. Obviously does follows Piers Morgan which is odd bearing in mind he calls him ‘an idiot’!

Yes a brilliant batting performance. Some were starting to have a pop at Duckett already but that showed just what a talent he is and very well played the new Jake Libby2.0 Perhaps dear old Baz will volunteer for a bit of "pot washing"(no pun intended) at Cafe Six tomorrow for F.F.D. as a goodwill gesture? Apparently, Ms Pursestrings has overlooked' having any Members' Forumn so far this season. That's a perfectly natural thing to do. When we've been having them for years it's completely understandable to forget about it. Presumably the same way the Yellow Brick Road(Notts Twitter/Website) also sometimes overlooks certain events.

    1. Difficult to see when Pursey will fit in a Members' forum now; unless it's at Welbeck. I hear a lead balloon landing in a distant field beyond Mansfield. However, I do not believe that our CEO "overlooked" the need for one.

  16. Does anything constructive or shall I say revealing ever come out of these Members Forums? Nothing riveting seems to hit the headlines next morning, or in fact the pages of this blog, to indicate what pertinent questions were asked and whether they were satisfactorily answered let alone addressed. Like someone once said ‘a Committee is a cul-de-sac down which ideas are lured and then quietly strangled’!

    1. But they are good customer service, leaving the punters with the illusion of (club's leaders' own) accountability and insight into the strategy being adopted by the coaching staff. They are often useful to prise out information of injuries etc to players, as the website is full of whitewash and soft soap and of cause there's that Elephant in the room, why our CEO has led our club into being cheerleaders for the Hundred competition- going against the wishes of everyone who has expressed an opinion on the subject that has a positive hope for the future of Notts CCC in mind.

  17. I think the answer to the question regarding our CEO is quite simple , Cash ! The only thing which makes any sense , Never mind the wishes of the vast majority of our members but if our esteemed leader thinks there may be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow there she will certainly go for it.

Sadly it does look as though the " Hundred " bandwagon is now unstoppable, So I guess we will all have to wait and see who was right. Did Lisa read the runes correctly or did most people who follow the game call it correctly when they said that there was no need for yet another one day competition...

    1. To be honest I reckon the majority of people in cricket County Boards, DofC, coaches/players even the TV and print media don’t really like or want the Hundred any more than we do but are not publicly critical of it of course because they all stand to gain financially be it only for a couple of years before it is scrapped. When the ECB are chucking money into the air and you are employed in cricket you grab as much of it as you can. Sadly!

Not being great with I.T. always preferred ET personally, I just press edit then type L.O.T.P/Stonewall Jackson etc and then press continue each time and not bother with the URL. I agree that Members'Forumns are important and they give people the chance to ask the top brass questions like how long will Coughlin's digit take to heal so we can the best athlete we've had since Chris Lewis back out onto the field again.
