Essex Specsavers CC1 at Chelmsford Loss

Day 3

ESSEX STROLL TO THE COMFIEST OF VICTORIES

Essex strolled to an eight wicket victory at sunny Chelmsford today 90 minutes after lunch. Notts added 68 runs to their overnight total with Simon Harmer picking up 6 for 60, none of the Notts batsmen being comfortable against him. Essex needed a paltry 105 to win and with the Notts bowlers never really threatening they had an extended net with Cook batting through with an undefeated 40.

Double trouble
It took Essex 80 minutes to polish off the Notts innings this morning. Essex opened with overseas pair Siddle (Hayes Close End) and Harmer (River End) and after 28 minutes of resistance, Chris Nash was caught by Lawrence at leg slip as Harmer collected his fifth wicket, 116 for seven. Next over, new batsman Luke Fletcher was put down at fourth slip by Lawrence off Siddle. Moores and Fletcher added 27, before Moores danced down the pitch to Harmer and was stumped by White for 22. Fletcher (15) fell to catch to the right at second slip by Harmer off Porter, 153 for 9. A wild swing and a miss from Broad saw him bowled by Porter for nine. Chappell 2 not out. Notts 158 all out. Harmer 6 for 60 and Porter 3 for 41.

Minor scare for Essex

Matt Carter bowled the first over from the Hayes Close End and off the third ball Nick Browne (1) was sent back by Alastair Cook who had played the ball to Fletcher at square leg, the top scorer from Essex's first innings failed to beat the Bomber's laser like throw, cue big celebrations, 1 for 1. Essex added a further 17 before lunch.

Fletcher came on after lunch from the Hayes Close End for a four overall burst then on came Broad. Carter not looking threatening was taken off and his replacement Patel had Westley dropped at second slip by Duckett when on 39. Patel though got his man when Westley was caught at mid wicket at the second attempt by Joe Clarke for 49.

New sick note required

Zak Chappell pulled up lame in his fourth over which was completed by Carter. At 1511, Lawrence got the winning run with a single off Patel. Essex 105 for two off 34.4 overs. Alaistair Cook 40 not out. Notts will be hoping for a much improved performance on the Isle of Wight next week. MAG

Day 2

FLETCHER DRIVES NOTTS' POSITIVE RESPONSE BUT...

THERE'S THREE SESSIONS TO BE PLAYED

Despite a lion hearted bowling performance from Luke Fletcher, Notts ended day 2 on the verge of another heavy championship defeat closing with a lead of 36 with only four second innings wickets standing after another spectacular Notts collapse going from 70 for none to 86 for six in 11 overs as Simon Harmer picked up four wickets for 32 including Mullaney and Patel in successive balls. All three innings have followed a similar pattern with batting relatively easy for an hour, then the wicket becomes increasingly hard to bat on. Essex started the day of continuous sunshine on 68 for 0 and after Broad removed Alastair Cook to a slip catch, Essex lost eight wickets for 80. Broad bowled well in the morning session but Fletcher was very much the star for Notts taking 5 for 50 including three wickets in a 13 over spell in between lunch. Siddle and Harmer added 81 runs in 23 overs for the ninth wicket but Fletcher removed Harmer and last man Sam Cook in successive overs with the new ball. Essex 241 all out with a lead of 54 runs. Duckett playing a truly dreadful shot was dropped by Sam Cook at long leg when yet to score but Slater and Duckett added 70 in 20 overs with relative ease. Enter Harmer, Duckett gave it away driving him carelessly to mid off. Next ball Slater received an unplayable ball from Porter that kept low. Slater has been the best bat for Notts in this match. Harmer then caught Clarke, Mullaney and Patel in his spinners web. Last to fall was night watchman Matt Carter leg before to Siddle. Carter himself had earlier taken three wickets in four overs before tiring.

Fletcher (River End) and Broad (Hayes Close End) opened the bowling and in the fourth over of the morning Alastair Cook (33) edged Broad to Mullaney at third slip who took a regulation catch, 78 for one. Broad's seven over spell went for 20, he picked up his second wicket when Westley was leg before for 12, 98 for two in the 29th over Chappell had a four over burst from the River End and then was replaced by Carter. Fletcher who took over from Broad took the third wicket as Lawrence (19) edged to Moores, 124 for three. Rishi Patel had a real struggle against Fletcher, constantly being beaten. On the stroke of lunch the young right hander was caught at second slip by Carter off Fletcher for 5. Essex 136 for 4 are the break off 50.1 overs. Browne 63 not out.

Cat and mouse
In the second over after lunch Browne (67) drove Carter for 4, but then cut the same bowler to Patel at backward point, 140 for 5. Fletcher was toying with ten Doeschate like a cat with a mouse. The South African fell leg before shouldering arms to The Bomber for a six ball duck, 144 for 6. It was four wickets in four overs spread over lunch when Middlesex loanee Robbie White (2) fell caught at short leg by Slater off Carter, 146 for seven. It was deja vue four overs later as Jamie Porter also fell to a short leg catch by Slater off Carter for 2, 158 for eight. Fletcher bowled an outstanding spell of 13 overs three for 25 either side of lunch from the Hayes Close End and was replaced by Broad. Unfortunately Broad's spell could not match Fletcher's in quality and slowly the pressure was released with Carter tiring, Patel came on but Siddle and Harmer were now putting Essex on top. Harmer was dropped on 35, a difficult chance to Patel's left off his own bowling. The ninth wicket had added 81 when the new ball was taken at 239 for eight off 80 overs. Fletcher head and shoulders above the rest of the Notts attack removed Harmer leg before for 43 with his fourth ball, 239 for nine. Broad conceded two off the next over and off the first ball of the 83rd over Fletcher removed Cook's off stump and left with a duck to his name. Peter Siddle 40 not out with Essex 241 all out. Fletcher quite brilliant with 5 for 50, Carter 3 for 68 and Patel 2 for 50. Chappell bowled at good pace but was wicketless on the helpful pitch in 12 overs. Luke Wood meanwhile took three wickets in his latest adventure on loan.

Dolly dropped

Notts had 34 overs to bat. Duckett on 0 played a horrendous pull shot in Porter's second over and Sam Cook dropped a dolly at long leg. There was a long stoppage as Duckett was hit mid ships by Siddle.

All too familiar

Duckett and Slater added 70 relatively easy before another trademark Notts collapse. Duckett got to 37 before driving Harmer to Porter at mid off. The very next ball Slater was leg before to one that kept low to Porter for 31, 70 for two in the 21st over. Notts were now like rabbits in headlights. Joe Clarke (1) did not last long getting an edge to Harmer the ball ballooning up to Cook at slip, 71 for three. Mullaney (2) faced 12 balls until being caught at short leg by ten Deschate. Patel went for a golden duck, this time caught one handed by ten Deschate as Harmer picked up his fourth wicket, 79 for five. Siddle returned and Carter was leg before for 2, 86 for six. Nash and Moores negotiated the last 19 balls as they closed 90 for six. All the hard work in the earlier part of the day had been undone in 45 minutes of complete mayhem. Notts championship woes seemingly never ending, it's nearly a year since their last win. MAG

Harry says,"if you can, have a look at the dismissals on VR Live where you can watch it over and over again - some very poor shots to be honest but also a couple of really dodgy umpiring decisions; Joe Clarke caught off his thigh pad, as plain as day and Matt Carter LBW to ball short, high and heading above a fifth stump. Fletcher had lots of better shouts turned-down earlier in the day."

Day 1
CAPTAIN LEADS NOTTS TO A POINTLESS DAY

Essex well on top against an outclassed Notts

On a glorious sunny day with a cloudless sky, Essex completely dominated the first day of this championship fixture at New Writtle Street. They bowled wonderfully, bowling a brilliant line and length to remove Notts for a below par 187.Ben Slater batted very determinedly for a well constructed 45 but after his dismissal it was the familiar Notts procession as Notts lost their last eight wickets for 69. Clarke made a somewhat streaky 48 but apart from Fletcher, there was precious little fight from the lower batting order. Nash, Mullaney. Patel, Moores and Fletcher were all out to ill judged strokes and the relentless Essex attack gave Notts precious free hits. After the heavy roller was applied the Notts never really looked like making any in roads to the left handed opening pair of Cook and Browne as Essex closed only 119 runs behind with all their first innings wickets standing.

Notts won the toss and elected to bat on a sunny morning. Ball was rested as Chappell made his Nottinghamshire championship debut. Luke Wood meanwhile has been shipped off to Northants where he scored 66, his enthusiasm and determination was missed at Chelmsford today.

In the fifth over Duckett was adjudged leg before to Porter (Hayes Close End) for seven, the left hander being reluctant to leave the crease. Nash raced to 26 with five boundaries but not for the first time this season gave his wicket away, playing a loose shot to substitute Jack Plom at square leg, Sam Cook the bowler, 38 for two. Slater and Clarke dropped anchor. Siddle bowled an excellent spell (6 3 6 0) from the Hayes Close End where he was unlucky not to induced an edge. White was standing up to Cook who was replaced at 1210 by Harmer's off spin. Notts got to lunch on 76 for two with Clarke on 20 and Slater on 20.

Clarke rides his luck

The struggle continued after lunch, the 100 coming up in the 38th over. Clarke in particular rode his luck edging balls wide of the fielders. At 1430 a wicket finally fell as Slater edged Porter to keeper White.Slater had made 45 (127 balls,6x4) in 43 overs. The third stand had added 80 in 33 overs. Notts' innings then went into terminal decline. Four overs later Clarke's long struggle ended as he was bowled by Porter, for 48 (102 balls, 7x4), 131 for 4 in the 47th over. Patel was dropped on three, a difficult caught and bowled chance missed by Sam Cook bowling from the River End. Patel though failed to add to his score as he was dismissed next over, failing to move his feet as he wafted at Siddle and was taken by White, 137 for five. Mullaney was next to fall in the following over, playing a poor shot to Cook and being caught at point by Browne, 139 for six. Moores was smartly caught above his head by Browne in the gulley off Porter for 10, 155 for seven. Notts 157 for seven at tea off 64 overs,Fletcher 7 and Broad 0. Notts had lost 5 wickets and scored 81 runs in the middle session.

Harmer goes shopping

After tea Harmer bought Fletcher's wicket. The Bomber whom hit him for six over cow corner went for a repeat shot and was caught on the ropes by Sam Cook for 24, 183 for eight in the 69th over. Chappell (0) lasted six balls until skying Harmer to Westley at mid off, 187 for nine. Carter also fell for a duck caught at slip by Westley off Siddle for 11. Notts 187 all out off 72.3 overs. Porter 4 for 75. Essex bowled 25 maidens, had barely bowled a bad ball and had fielded excellently. It was a very impressive effort.

The heavy roller was used between the innings as Essex had 21 overs to bat. However the Notts attack never really caused any threat to Browne and Cook who reached 68 without loss at the close. Fletcher and Broad bowled six overs apiece and then Chappell and Mullaney replaced them. Chappell bowling from the same Hayes Close End as Porter bowled with some pace with conceded 23 in five overs. Carter bowled two overs from the River End but disappointedly dropped it too short.

On the same ground that they recorded their last championship victory 11 months ago, this was extremely poor day for Notts. There appears to be huge chasm between the top end of the table and where Notts are presently. Hopefully they will show much more fight tomorrow. MAG

Notts announced a 13 man squad for the journey through he desert:

Ben Slater
Chris Nash
Ben Duckett
Steven Mullaney
Joe Clarke
Samit Patel
Tom Moores
Luke Fletcher
Jake Libby
Zak Chappell
Matt Carter
Stuart Broad
Jake Ball

  1. Doubtful Cricket Australia would let him play I would have thought, If you are not prepared to risk a player in an important one day match when he only has 10 overs to bowl then surely it stands to reason he would not be risked in a match where he would bowl considerably more overs ....

  2. With Pattinson apparently nursing a side strain, the powers that be in their infinite wisdom have decided to loan out Luke Wood again, to the cobblers.

I suggest that the decision is a load of cobblers.

Better to send out Chappel where a decent bowling coach can sort out his run up, and get his pace back , which has evaporated into thin air since joining Notts.

If Pattinson is injured, then our bowling options are very limited, unless we have an imminent overseas replacement lined up.

  3. Notts are right to loan Luke Wood out - with the best will in the world he is not a Division 1 bowler - as I have said before he is fast but lacks variety and 'guile' - he is a 'work in progress.' Pattinson has demonstrated all too clearly where Notts are weak, and not for the first time.

So then, we decide to wait practically all close season to finally select our overseas option. He then has to sit out our first two games and now somewhat predictably is injured in between he unsurprisingly gets selected for an A tour so will now leave early. Is there any other industry apart from sport or politics where chronic management decisions face no accountability. As much as we love Patto for his brilliance what on earth is the point signing someone who can't take to the field and play games. Its not easy anymore signing top class overseas options with the IPLI, tour schedules and the respective cricket boards but its what the DoC gets paid for surely now he does not have any involvement in the affairs of the 1st team. Thank goodness weve got PM & The General on the coaching staff if nothing else

In hindsight I was probably being too critical of the decision to opt for Patto. We can all see why we wanted him with what he offers any team and as mags states previously he is our match winner and we don't seem to win many games without him. So is it just an unfortunate set of circumstances that he has not been in the side for our first 3 red ball games and now will be called back early. I am not sure it was a gamble worth taking but we all know the DoC gets tunnel vision and panics with regard to the red ball overseas player and he likes people we've had before who are a safe fit, which is perfectly understandable in some ways.

  7. Yet another pathetic and spineless batting display... Relegation, even at this early stage,is pretty much guaranteed...unless some severe changes are made now...but this same 11/12 players will be selected week after week with no one pushing them for selection

  8. In all honesty, you have to question the management selection policy, irrespective of injuries.

I see Luke Wood top scored for Northants against a strong Lancashire attack.

Why on earth have we loaned him out.

Chappel has clearly struggled since joining Notts , and by all accounts is down on pace, compared to his time at Leicester.

From my observations, Wood at present, is a better option.

Batting wise, the captain is again struggling against division one bowling attacks, as is Samit.

Slater has been the shining light and also Clarke, in an otherwise inconsistent line up.

We do not have the cushion of early season victories achieved in 2018.

Notts are going to have to turn things around very quickly, otherwise form would suggest that division 2 beckons.

    1. Last season management acted very slowly, failing to react to dismal performances until, out came the cheque book! But it was early season wins that saved us in the end.

Duckett is struggling, should he be opening?
Bowling lacking bite. I know what Mustapha will be saying with regards to the bowling coach and his mishandling of our bowlers.
Time to act is now, not at the back end of August. Some players need a proverbial kick -up the "tailenders".

Chappell today, I thought, bowled some good balls but was put off his rhythm by Sir Alastair Cook influencing a weak umpire into warning (informally I think) Chappell about his follow through getting too close to the danger zone - not that it had appeared to my biased eyes that he had, the result however pushed Chappell to bowl wider in the crease and disrupted his flow - job done by a wily knight, misusing his influence IMHO.

I was watching on VR live which wasn't linked on this occasion from the Notts site, which must be preparing to go into ODI mode.

Much earlier, I was also able to catch 50 minutes or so's play before lunch, which was very slow going; Harmer and Siddle bowling, tight but they didn't create many chances either (if any, in the time I was watching).

  9. Looking at the scorecard it seems very much a case of men against boys, This match already looks like one which Notts will struggle to make last 3 days.

Not sure what Notts can do to change things, They hardly have a wealth of players in the seconds pushing for selection

In football when teams struggle the answer is often to change the manager, Peter Moores is a fine coach,But like any coach he can only help the players he has been given. That being the case he hardly seems to be the one to blame for our poor start to the CC season

Our DoC on the other hand has been involved at management level with club for some years now, Could it be that he is getting a little stale in his thinking,? Whilst I did applaud the decision to sign JP for this season I did worry that injuries were always likely to be a concern, And so it has proved, With the benefit of hindsight I think we can all see the signing of Patto was risky and given our less than thrilling form last season we should have made more use of the kolpak market and strengthened our team that way, That's the area where I think our man at the top has been slow to accept and make use of.

There is still time to look in that area , The season as yet is still young, But somehow you feel that the DoC will just sit on it and hope for the best.

Hope I am wrong but the season so far has the look of a relegation season, Even Kent who we all thought might struggle are doing okay , And that with the aid of a certain ex Notts player.

Careful Zanga, I almost got stoned alive for mentioning the dreaded word KOLPAK last year with people who cleary dont watch the stiffs telling me to stop going on about it.But Andre Adams won us the Championship in 2010 so some dreaded Kolpaks are ok then presumably? As usual I agree with you, however could our beleaguered DoC have expected the Tin Man to be crocked again, Duckett to have an early season shocker and Chappell to look anything like the bowler who was with the England Lions this winter? But yes the lack of our customary early season wins that keep us in Div One is worrying. BIG effort needed tmrw by the cartel

  10. It's pretty clear that we need help soon, So far in CC cricket we have looked toothless in attack and when pressure is put on the batsmen more often than not we crumble.

So the question is if not Kolpack then where do we go ?

Other sides are not going to let players go that would help Notts

As I mentioned previously the seconds do not appear to have anyone making a case for inclusion in the first team.

In fact about the only area Notts could look other than the K word is at another overseas player, We need to ascertain how long it will take for Patto's injury to clear up given his time with the club is likely to be shorter than planned, If the answer is more than a couple of weeks then we need to get a replacement in ASAP...

    1. You are correct, regarding a toothless attack.

Realistically, we have struggled to find an English qualified, new ball strike bowler, since the departure of Sidebottom.

Ball is currently, a shadow of the bowler we had two years ago, and Hutton and Milnes have departed for pasture's new.

Coughlan was a sick note when we signed him,so no change there.

Footitt is sadly past his sell by date, and the management obviously dont rate Luke Wood's bowling othewise he would be playing in this match, instead of going out on loan.

So yes, options are limited without Pattinson's input.

Broad has to prove today, that he is effective as the Essex bowlers, on that wicket.

      We shall see

The obsession with white ball cricket is really coming home to roost this season. It is depressing when a much less star studded Kent side have shown guts in every game this season. I thought Warwickshire and Kent were dead certs to be the ones to fight to avoid the one relegation spot but now it appears to be between Notts and a really inexperienced Warwickshire. Show some application lads as allowing their tail to establish a healthy lead then blowing a good opening partnership really isn't good enough.

  16. An absolute catastrophe - but, sadly, I am not surprised. Peter Moores seems to be more a short-term fix Coach who saved the DoC a few Seasons ago but it has all turned sour. Yes, 'Sam R' this regime must indeed go - they just see Notts as a 'cash cow' from International Matches with no commitment to the actual Side that we support. We are a 'hit and run' set-up, no apparent ability to concentrate on the longer / purer form of the game. It just demonstrates immaturity and lack of abilities - you can't expect to rely on 1 man to keep us in Division 1. So PLEASE GO MR Newell, you have been a good servant over many years but lately any 'magic' has gone - and take the CEO and certain other 'top brass' with you and let's see if a wholesale change of ethos and direction can bring success back to Trent Bridge. I listened to Somerset's interview today on Radio 5 Extra - they really know what they are doing, local talent, local support, creating a real local ethos and culture - they just want the 'best of the best' in order to be 'the best of the best.' They include in that all of their staff whatever their positions and all of their supporters - no 'us' and 'them' and the aloof "we are always right" attitude that seems to come form the Notts Committee downwards. Success comes from a grassroots upwards approach. Things at Trent Bridge are fast reaching a crisis.

Since we beat Essex away last June we have been slaughtered in virtually every four day game. I am sure they are trying but something has to change quickly to avoid a season of toil. Our batters need to bat time like Dominic Sibley at Warwickshire who really values his wicket. Chris Nash should be opening as he is battling hard and Ben Duckett needs to build an innings before he plays his big shots. Peter Moores needs to kick a few backsides as it's not all about technical coaching. As said yesterday we need Patto back immediately but if this is not going to happen we need to move on to a replacement. The problem is if we take a batsman we don't look capable of bowling sides out twice but if we take a bowler the batting is still too flaky.

    1. You are absolutely right 'Kolkata etc. etc.' It is far more than just technical coaching - it is about pride in playing for Notts and application - 4 days not 1 Matches require a completely different approach. I just don't see that Notts have 4-day players.

  23. One thing is for sure, we cannot play spin bowling having been skittled in consecutive championship games by Leach and now Harmer.

Instead of playing daft warm up games of football, we should be devoting every available minute, to developing our cricket skills.

As for the Essex game,Luke Wood should have been included, as much for his batting, if nothing else.Chappel in my opinion , needs to develop his skill set, before he is ready to compete at this level.

However, it would be unfair to single him out for this performance.

The senior pro's, yet again, failed to deliver

The burden of captaincy, seems to be weighing heavily on the shoulders of Mullaney, who through either lack of concentration or technique, is not delivering the goods.

We no longer have the luxury of Chris Read to bail us out, when the going gets tough.

It is starting to look like another long season of hard toil in 4 day cricket.

The recruitment policy, of poaching players from other countries, which has been repeatedly ridiculed in the press , and on the circuit, has failed to bear fruit, and also cost the club, substantial sums of money .

This short sighted policy, is not sustainable,

Maybe we ought to recruit Steven Rhodes to run our academy, considering the number of quality players he brought through during his tenure at Worcester.

    Food for thought.

Yes, I agree with a lot of what you say Mark. PM says Patto unlikely to play IOW game. 1. Sorry but Patto was universally applauded when we re-signed him. It's just a shame he's A/ had an International call-up B/ Being wrapped in cotton wool after picking up a minor, slight strain, probably after consultation with CA. Patto gave everyone a lift and air of expectation for 2019 at the time of the announcement, in the hope that he would repeat the form of 2017, but now it's all gone a bit flat alas.

  25. Worcestershire don't have the luxury of being a test ground, So they have little alternative given the cash constraints that brings other than to have a thriving coaching program. Clearly this is something Notts need to put in place, Its something that needs to happen now so that in the few years it takes to bear fruit Notts will have players ready and able to step I to the first team.,

One of Notts problems seems to be the way they give jobs to ex players, Surely the way forward is to identify the best bowling coach and then make certain they come to the club At the moment we seem to be standing still bowling wise, Of the present bowling attack who can say that our present coach has improved them ?

Fletch leant his trade before he arrived, Broad came through at Leicestershire Ball seems to have gone backwards ( why has the BC not sorted out his obvious problems) Samit seems to treading water and as been stated elsewhere the captain seems to have found the captaincy a burden

    So what to do ?

First of all the batsmen need to bat time,Cut out the daft shots,Don't worry if your scoring rate is pedestrian runs will come eventually.

As for the bowlers basic line and length has to the first requirement restrict scoring and sooner or later wickets will come.

Fielding wise, Its difficult to think of a side worse than Notts in the field, When Rikki left we not only lost a batsmen who gave us a lot of good memories we also lost by far our best fielder. Difficult to see what we can do other to practise practise and then practise some more.

It would also be nice if the club could give us some indication of our long we will be without JP and Coughlin, Its not much to ask that supporters are given some idea, Seems to me the clubs PR needs to be updated.

    1. We have got proven good players, on past records - so what is going wrong again?

We have employed a sports psychologist to get the players right in their mindset - that's not working too great either.

The coaches are as Zanga states largely appointments from "within" that Mick is comfortable working with perhaps, apart from PM of course who had a proven pedigree before working at TB, obviously. Having said that, didn't AP have a successful time working with Canada?

Regardless of who the coaches are and how talented the players that we have are; other teams are doing it better, with less resources. Why/how?

  26. There are defeats and there are thrashings which we excel in game after game...very strong leadership and difficult decisions need making now, a clear out with dismissals/resignation at the top, get Nash in as Captain (yes I know but there's no one else I can think of), with every effort put in to stemming this tide now, just show some effort and pride please, because we are an embarrassment and I no longer enjoy supporting this rabble

  27. seem to have lost my previous post - maybe too much of a rant. It is such a disappointment. (the team, not the loss of my post). Ball has regressed, we wont get much from Zak or Coughlin, I had forgotten about Footitt, Miles seems to be doing ok at Kent, other counties seem to be getting more out of Wood, would you be able to pick Broad out as the international bowler?, and our 2 all rounders (Mull and Samit - just in case of doubt) hardly contribute and certainly not in a sustained fashion.

Essex, Surrey and Somerset and good teams and I think have left us behind a bit in recent times. Harmer is a great Kolpak example - I saw him at TB last year and his performance was off the scale vs Samit's. I had forgotten that only 1 team goes down, but our record since the win v Essex and our inability to change things leaves me worried. I would certainly be looking at Pick's position

Yes my fellow friend Nottsviewer you are absolutely right with regard to Patto, in THEORY a brilliant signing. But some events are plain unlucky and others HIGHLY likely to occurr even without Mystic Meg(that takes you back?). With two sick noters amongst Pickys cartel, was that a gamble worth taking? Personally, in an Ashes year I would say not. The Capitanos form in red ball is disturbing, albeit understandable. It wont happen but yes take the pressure off him and replace him with Gnasher. Some thrive on captaincy like Atherton and Gooch, others it affects their own form too much.It would be drastic but a year of thrashings and capitulations do you just bury your head in the sand or ACTUALLY do something about it?

  30. And all we get from the club is PM taling about missed chances after the Slater and Clarke partnership in the first innings. What we really wanted to hear is just what they plan to do about our terrible batting Other teams seem able to sort out their problems whilst Notts batting woes seem to go on and on

Let's not forget it's not just this season, We were pretty dire last season too , So far this season the only two batters who look in any sort of form are Slater and Nash, Maybe Nash should open with Slater, At least we may get a decent start ,Trouble is it's what follows that worries Clarke whose mind seems elsewhere, Duckett who appears to be a clone of Samit in the way he keeps getting out to the same draft shots over and over again.

Then we have the Captain who understandably has lots of worries other than his own poor form ,Then we have Tom Moores who whilst a talented bat shows he is still learning when he has one of his regular rushes of blood to the head, Fletch I think we can say has done all we can expect of him with the bat, As for the rest of the team, Well let's just say they could do better batting wise.

Our coaches are paid very well, It's time they learnt their money!

  31. Oh dear!
    Oh dear ,oh dear !
    Whats to be done ?
Somebody at TB should be reading the riot act .
Is it just a too cushy existence there at the moment for the players ?
On paper we appear to be virtually unbeatable with the line-up we have .
But why are they not delivering as a TEAM ?
Something is wrong somewhere -but what .
DOES ANYONE AT TB CARE ABOUT 4 DAY CRICKET ANYMORE ?
As we all know its the limited overs stuff ,with large attendances and even bigger beer sales that pays the wages .Its clear that the 4 day game and the 50 over format are on the wane and the future is apparently Blast T20 and the dreaded 100 Ball Comp .
Ordinary cricket fans who like a proper game of cricket are being neglected and marginalised .
I dread to think what we will be watching at Trent Bridge in 5-10 years time .

  32. Waste of time moaning - TB Ltd. is a Business and 4-Day Matches lose money, the 50:50 perhaps just about breaks even (who knows!). It is only commercially-driven activities that count and so us members sit back and moan but do nothing to change anything. The answer is in OUR hands but the question is can we survive living in the past?

Sorry, dunno what's gone off above? Saw Eng v Pakistan yesterday@TB. As haven't seen England live since 2010 the aspect that stood out the most was the incredible agility, athleticism and fielding from the England boys and then you compare that to some of our puddings we put on the field. It's no wonder when our strong batting unit misfires we don't win one day games.Guess PM&the DoC tried to address this but two of the ones brought in to improve this aspect appear to be perennial sick noters which is slightly ironic really.
