Essex Specsavers D1 at Trent Bridge Loss

Day 4

ANOTHER HAMMERING SUFFERED
by pitiful Notts

Notts lost to Essex by an innings and 123 runs at sunny Trent Bridge today, Simon Harmer impressive as ever with three wickets today and four in the innings. Notts adding 83 for the remaining five wickets. The only shining light was the batting of Ravi Ashwin who scored 35 and batted for 73 balls. As with his bowling he showed plenty of PROFESSIONAL PRIDE, something hopefully his team mates should have noted whilst sitting on the dressing room balcony.

Notts lost their first wicket after 36 minutes, Duckett feathering a catch to keeper Wheater off Harmer for 39, 110 for six. Harmer’s 50th first-class victim of the season. Twenty minutes later Harmer got one to turn appreciably and Fletcher (11) edged to Wheater, 115 for seven. Beard bowling from the Pavilion End bowled Moores (14) who played on, 158 for eight. Notts got to lunch on 165 for eight with Ashwin on 23 and Broad on 0.

After lunch the new ball was taken with Notts 169 for eight after 81 overs. It was taken by Siddle and Harmer. In the 83rd over, Harmer had Broad (6) leg before, 175 for nine. At 1417, Ashwin (35) was the last wicket to fall when he skyed Porter to Siddle who took the catch at mid wicket. Notts 183 all out. Harmer 4 for 35. The game having effectively been lost just after tea on the first day after their feeble first innings effort. Notts now have four days before they visit championship top dogs Somerset. The portents are not good, the Cidermen have won their previous seven championship contests against Notts. Notts last won at championship game at Taunton in 1985 and are now 15 championship games without a win including 10 hammerings. Is this the equivalent of Basford United heading for the Etihad? How the mighty have fallen! MAG

Day 3
ESSEX IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE TO BELEAGUERED NOTTS

on another routine shambolic day at Trent Bridge
Notts trail by 206 runs with five second innings wickets standing after another quite dreadful day for Notts at Trent Bridge. Essex added 174 runs to the overnight score to declare on 519 for 9 with Ravi Bopara scoring 135 242 balls, 11 x 4), after Nick Browne was out early doors without adding to his overnight score. With 46 overs left to bat today, Notts contrived to lose five wickets on the easy paced pitch with four batsmen culpable for their own dismissals. Mullaney shouldering arms and being bowled, Slater running himself out, Clarke caught down the leg side and then Patel playing a dreadful shot to be caught at slip. Embarrassing inept is probably the best description.

Browne having batted all day yesterday fell to the fifth ball of the day, leg before to Broad (Radcliffe Road End) for 163, 346 for 4. Patel initially bowled from the Pavilion End but was replaced by Jake Ball. Ashwin replaced Broad and with his eighth ball of the day had ten Doeschate leg before for 22, 384 for five. The sixth wicket added 38 runs before Wheater (22) was leg before attempting to sweep Ashwin, 422 for six. A quick single from Bopara off Fletcher (Pavilion End) took Bopara to 100 off 184 balls (9x4). Essex at lunch were 457 for six with Bopara on 110 and Harmer on 16.

Broad came on from the Pavilion End after lunch and Harmer (20) edged him to Moores, 463 for seven. The third new ball was taken with Essex 492 for seven off 161 overs. Bopara and Siddle added 56 runs for the eighth wicket before Siddle (33) skyed Ball to Broad at mid on. Three balls later a brilliant one handed catch on the mid wicket ropes by Broad off Ball saw Bopara out for 135, Essex immediately declared on 519 for nine off 167.4 overs. Broad 3 for 72 and Ashwin on debut 60 -17-162-3.

Notts trailing by 306 runs managed to last 16 balls before losing their first wicket, Mullaney shouldering arms to Porter and losing his off stump, 0 for one. Nash (13) was leg before to a ball that kept low to Siddle, 13 for two after 10 overs. Notts 25 for two at tea.

It got worse in the last session, a run out mixed up between Clarke and Slater saw Slater run out for 10, the left hander charging down the pitch and sent back by striker Clarke, Beard throwing the ball from point to bowler Harmer, 40 for three. Clarke (21) became the fourth Notts batsman in the match to be strangled down the leg side, Beard the bowler, 49 for 4. Patel and Duckett added 46 in 17 overs but then Patel (20) played an awful shot to Harmer and he was smartly caught by Cook at slip, 95 for 5. Night watchman Fletcher survived nine balls to finish on 4 not out, Duckett batting at six (where he should have been batting all season) due to an injured thumb is on 32. Notts 100 for five. Yet another shambles of day and with the discontentment amongst members growing ever stronger, how long can the apathetic status quo continue? Don't be late tomorrow. MAG

Day 2
ESSEX GRIND OUT LEAD ON TURGID DAY AT TRENT BRIDGE

On a very slow day at breezy Trent Bridge, Essex ground out 273 for the loss of just two wickets as they closed on 345 for 3 off 120 overs. Left hander Nick Browne batted the entire day as he stood on an unbeaten 163 at the close with him is Ravi Bopara who has 62, the pair so far adding 130 for the fourth wicket. Browne playing the conditions to perfection, has faced 366 balls and hit 27 fours, having given one chance. Notts toiled manfully on the featherbed pitch, but could only pick up one bowling point.

Ravi Ashwin on his debut has so far bowled 47 overs but his 282 balls in an innings is a long way of the Notts record which is 452 balls bowled by Wilfred Flowers versus Lancashire at Old Trafford in 1886.

Notts limited Essex's run scoring in the opening exchanges with Ashwin [Radcliffe Road) and Fletcher and Broad from the Pavilion End. Forty minutes in, Tom Westley (42) edged Ashwin to Mullaney at first slip, 95 for two. Essex got to lunch on 155 for two with Browne on 65 and Lawrence on 37.

Many supporters attended the member’s forum at lunchtime where Messrs Moores, Newell and Tennant held court along with the CEO. The take home message was that the players are short of confidence but they are working their hardest to rectify the situation. The coach did admit however we are currently favourites for relegation…onwards and upwards!

After lunch, Browne and Lawrence consolidated. Browne on 81 was dropped by Clarke low down at square leg off Ball. The new ball was taken at 1502 with Essex 205 for two off 80 overs. With the fourth over of the new ball, Fletcher bowled Lawrence for 64. The second bonus point seemingly appearing on the scoreboard before the bail hit the floor, 215 for three. The third wicket had added 120 runs in 47 overs. In the same over an off side four by Browne saw him to 100 in 250 balls. Essex got to tea on 241 for three off 86 overs with Browne on 115 and Bopara on 7.

Essex plodded on after tea as Mullaney rotated his bowlers, even Duckett getting a bowl with his medium pace floaters as the spinners changed ends. Essex 319 for 3 after 110 overs. The session became a bit of yawn fest as Notts successfully slowed the over rate down to ensure the days ration was only 96 overs; Ashwin 47-15-114-1. Essex though now lead by 132 and will probably bat for the best part of two sessions tomorrow to turn the screw and the bedraggled Notts outfit. Let's hope from a Notts perspective things improve tomorrow. Is there light at the end of the tunnel? MAG

Day 1

OUTCLASSED AGAIN
After a 49 day hiatus due to the World Cup, Notts returned to Trent Bridge today but unfortunately they failed to on improve their dismal and unacceptable championship form, managing to lose their last eight wickets for 88 runs as they bowled out for 213 on an easy paced pitch. Visitors Essex closed on 72 for 1 after 24 overs, to trail Notts by 141 runs. They are in an extremely strong position.
Notts won the toss and elected to bat. The line up was predictable; in came debutant Ashwin and Broad and out went Carter and Pattinson. With relegation a near certainty and in a desperate attempt to end the 14 game winless run, at least one place should have been given to a youngster but this has been the case since the Isle of Wight. Too many players know no matter how badly they perform, they have a guaranteed place in the eleven, a recipe for disaster. Porter (Radcliffe Road) and Siddle (Pavilion End) and it only took 17 balls for the first wicket to fall as Ben Duckett (8) played a lazy shot to Porter and was caught by first slip Alastair Cook, 13 for one. Duckett is not an opener. Beard replaced Porter and then Harmer came on for the 14th over and was hit for a six over mid wicket by Mullaney in an over that went for nine, he was immediately replaced by Porter who was hooked for six by Mullaney. In the same over Mullaney (43) was dropped at backward point by Browne, a hard chance high to his right. Beard picked up a wicket in his fourth over, Slater (14) edging to keeper Wheater who took the catch low to his left. The second wicket had added 58 in 14 overs. A driven four by Mullaney off Harmer set him to 50 in 73 balls. At lunch Notts were 97 for 2 off 29 overs with Mullaney on 57 and Nash on 14.
Forty five minutes after lunch, Nash was strangled down the leg side and was caught by keeper Wheater off Beard for 28, 126 for three in the 40th over. This was the start of yet another Notts batting collapse. The third wicket had added 55 in 23 overs. Essex were bowling to a plan and Mullaney became the third Notts batsman to give his wicket away, another strangled down the leg side, caught Wheater bowled Beard for 74, 141 for four. Mullaney though had shown great grit to score 74 in 184 balls (9x4, 2x6), sadly his example was not followed. Clarke's miserable season continued as he left plumb leg before to Siddle for 15, 151 for five. Ashwin walked across his stumps to Porter and departed leg before for 5, 162 for six. Moores (0) lasted seven balls before being yorked by Harmer and losing his off stump, 163 for seven. Fletcher lasted 11 balls before becoming Porter's third victim, leg before for 1, 168 for eight. Notts limped to tea on 194 for 8 off 64 overs with Patel on 30 and Broad on 11.

Shortly after the interval there were enormous cheers as a four through the vacant third man position by Broad off Siddle saw Notts to a rare batting bonus point. But the fun did not last for long, Patel fell leg before to Siddle for 39, 211 for nine. Ball (1) became the third Notts batsman to be caught by the keeper to a leg side ball, Siddle the bowler. Notts 213 all out, Siddle 3 for 38, Porter 3 for 48 and Beard 3 for 62. The total was probably at least 150 below par. Mullaney promoting himself up the order to set an example made 74, but his batting colleagues failed to support him, with the next best score being Patel's 39. Essex were excellent at stemming the run rate, knowing full well that our cavalier batting line up would sooner or later give their wickets way. Simples! Notts continue to remain a team desperately short of confidence, backbone and any ability to back time at the crease. .

In the fourth over of the reply, Cook (2) edged Broad (Pavilion End) into Moores gloves, 10 for one. Broad though failed to make the batsman play enough. Both the opening bowlers bowled six over spells, with Fletcher being the more impressive and unlucky bowler. Like Fletcher, Ashwin at least kept the runs down from the Radcliffe Road. Jake Ball remains a pale shadow of the bowler we saw in 2016. The members await and deserve a dramatic improvement from the expensively compiled Notts team tomorrow. They continue to perform way below the sum of their parts, as most observers continue to state, there is something seriously wrong somewhere……. MAG

  1. Peter and colleagues can only work with what they've got. He needs to stress that this is a 4-day Game and so they have plenty of time to play themselves in, gauge the wicket; suss out the bowlers and just play responsibly.

    1. Wouldn't that be basically what he's been saying from game one? I don't believe Peter has been telling batsmen "to go out there, impose yourself, play your shots, don't worry about losing your wicket because it's the Blast that's important this year and getting yourself onto the Hundred draft in October".

    2. Perhaps Ravi Ashwin is Plan B. Can he out bowl Simon Harmer? Are Essex better against spin than Notts or is it vice versa? Suspect we'll hear a lot about SAC at weekend - not what to do with various coaches or what the Red Dogs done to MON but Sir Alastair Cook.

    3. Is Ashwin here? How come the STONEY silence on the Yellow Brick Road twitter club feed? Stuart Broad changing toothpaste normally makes it to this avenue

And with temperatures set to sore to a whopping 32degs tmrw will Steve be able to replicate a mini taunton or has this welcome heatwave arrived too little and too late? The experiment with Imran Tahir didnt really pay dividends in red ball for us and I think we must be going back to StuMacgill as the last succesful overseas exponent of the slow bowling variety.Anyone remember Paul Strang as overseas for one season?

  4. Come on please Notts CCC , bring in a couple of 2nd team guys as well as Ravi Ashwin and Stuart Broad. If ever a team needed a shake up, it is this one.

  5. I remember Paul Strang......in a bowl out on a corporate rainy day he wasn't able to hit an unguarded set of stumps with 3 attempts.....anyhow, onto present matters: I see the seconds have been playing 20 over stuff vs Leics, so not sure the performances there really count. I must say I like Essex as a team- strong top order and a couple of more than handy bowlers in Porter and Harmer - the latter at TB last year made it look a different pitch to that which Samit had earlier bowled on.
Not seen any squad news but suspect it'll be the usual

    Slat/Duck/Nash/Clarke/Mull/Samit/Moores/Ash/Broad/Fletch/Ball

...pity the game isn't being played in an exercise book, because that's not a bad side on paper.....

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ashwin's inclusion should see Samit finally benched long term, not good enough with bat or ball. Obviously Broad will play, God only knows why, ECB orders perhaps? Will Libby get an extended run and at who's expense?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Kolkata Grammar PoliceSaturday, 29 June, 2019

Libby should be opening and the players in peril of losing their place are Slater, Clarke and Patel. On current form Clarke is doing marginally worse than Slater so Duckett could drop to four to replace him to give Joe a break to sort his head out.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Perhaps Joe Clarke will get the psychological support he (on the evidence of the lack of runs and concentration in the middle) needs - that's Libby brought in. The Ashwin interview was extolling Carter's good "strong fingers", so expect Patel to play and not Carter. If Patel is off to pastures new next season and he isn't producing the goods this year, for me he should sit out the remaining games. Libby to open with Slats and Duckett at 4 - I agree KGP

BUT - JC will be left to battle his demons in the side and the team picks itself on paper, no need for a head coach; it will be plan A, even though plan A hasn't delivered the results expected of it so far.

No more anger as we knew what was coming. Thoughts from the day. Mull led from the front stepping up to open and did a great job and he will be furious getting out strangled down the leg side like two others. The mental fragility to subside from over 100 for 2 is staggering. Ben Slater badly needs a rest and Libby should have played. Clarke looked in good touch before getting out cheaply again. Tom Moores is not of the required standard as a keeper or batsman. He is trying to occupy the crease but seems frightened of playing his shots which was always his biggest asset. I can understand why as he would be castigated if he gave his wicket away but the situation is so dire he needs to go back to what he does best. Fletch bowled two brilliant overs at the most ungainly batsman I have ever seen but Nick Browne was still there at the close. Stuart dismissed Cook with a good ball but his line was all over the place due to his lack of cricket. The lack of intensity in the bowling of Jake Ball is sad to see. Ashwin was accurate but does not look like he will bowl sides out like Harmer who has better flight and drift.

  12. I didn't go but the outcome was exactly what the learned few had predicted. So for the members Forum tomorrow the only question is "When will you do the right thing, Mr Newell, and resign?"

  13. Something is terribly wrong within the club; those at the top need to stop denying it instead of making lame excuses.

  14. Shuffling (polishing a turd) the batting order is not the answer. This shower of shit are going down. Sadly those in charge seem to give no tosses. Get some of the academy batsmen in, give 'em the rest of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It says a lot for the cricket on offer today when you realise that the highlight of proceedings was the members forum.

Not that it told us much that we did not already know, Notts are on the way to Division 2, Even the management as good as accept it.... What was good to see was the turnout, In all my visits to the forums I don't think I have ever seen that many members attend, Of course we got the answers we expected, But hopefully the large turnout will ensure that things are not swept under the carpet.

As I mentioned earlier the cricket was boring, A feathered pitch was always going to present problems in getting 20 wickets for our attack, The hope was of course we would bat well enough to maybe get a draw and hopefully get a little confidence back into the batsmen.

We all know now that was a forlorn hope, on a wicket where 450 would have been a fair score we conspired to make less than half of that, Defeat now is pretty inevitable... Is there anyone around who thinks we can manage to bat out four sessions for a draw ?

    ReplyDelete
  16. A Master-Class in 4-day cricket from Essex - but do questions have to be asked of the Head Groundsman, the Players or the Coaches? 'Zanga' is correct about the Members Forum and I have no doubts at all that the message was received 'loud and clear' from the Members - we will have to see how the remainder of the Season pans out but I don't see 'success' as being whether we win the T20 or not. The purest form of the Game is the longer format with the many twists and turns that can occur. Notts First Innings contained a high proportion of Boundaries - so perhaps that says a lot about the mentality of the Players - do they see the 'big bucks' in the White Ball game?

So few comments on the Essex game would suggest that anger and frustration has now turned to acceptance and apathy. I am still bewildered how the likes of Kent and Warwickshire are still outperforming us by a massive margin while we are performing like an outclassed Varsity side. The Aussies once said about an England touring side that they can't bat bowl or field and that description unfortunately fits Notts at present.

  18. UF, I think you're spot on.For myself I try to be less partial, to just appreciate the sport but I struggle with that as I love Notts and want them to succeed. I doubt now that I'll come to any more red ball offerings at least until the changes that we have called for happen.

  21. Can Notts hold on for a draw ?
At the beginning of Day 3 my estimation of the odds are -
    Essex to win !/10
    The Draw 9/1
    Notts to win 200/1
    Anyone want £10 at 200/1 Notts to win £2,000 ! ?
( a life changing amount for some ?)
Any way good luck to Notts today . Nothing is going right for them . I fancy one of the Notts team to score a decent 100 in the second innings .

    1. Just pathetic. Mull forgets to protect his wicket - hopeless and Clarke joins the strangled down the legside club, a club for which the membership has soured in this game. It only used to be Samit in that club, but now they all want to join. There's no discipline in the batting and that is down to the coaching and therefore the blame.

Yes dear old Gnasher fronting up today. Suspected, like us all no doubt, we would pathetically capitulate in the 2nd innings and we did just that. Mull understandably looks shot to bits as capitano but he won't resign to me as he will fear losing his place in the red ball team. Sending in Big Fletch to protect Moores&Ashwin gave me the biggest laugh of the day. Well, perhaps after this latest disaster team performance and thrashing, we may give LPW or Lyndon James a chance or bring back Jake Libby. None may be Div One cricketers but how many more chances do the old guard have to get ? And I use that loosely as despite what PM keeps telling us these ain't young and inexperienced players waiting to gel.

      Delete
    3. Does the "young team" look anymore gelled now, than they did against Somerset? No, Moores is failing to gel these players. Obviously then, you try different players in that case. But no, Moores will carry on regardless.

  25. Sadly I have to say that it just looked like a lack of talent - and Chris Nash REALLY thinks that we can bat all day and get something out of this Match!!!??? - perhaps the Side are suffering from delusions of grandeur. This is a particularly serious situation and positive action has to be taken - opposition Sides have new worked out that if they bat long against us they only need the 1 good Innings as they can easily bowl us out twice. I also have my doubts that we will be any better in the T20.

    1. Not sure why you would assume they won’t be any better in the T20. Different team in a completely different format.

    2. The confidence will still be rock bottom, unless there's an amazing transformation at Taunton and against Surrey going into the T20 "block". Yes 3 new players will come in; Hales, Christian and Harry G but key T20 players on paper; Duckett, Clarke, Patel, Mull and Slater all look done in and done over. For me at Taunton, we need to change the skipper, retain Mull as opener with Slater, bring in a couple of lads from the Seconds (LPW and LJ probably) and balance the side around those changes.

  26. Oh ye of little faith !
Surely its not beyond the realms of fantasy to think we can bat out all of Day 4 and get an honorable draw ?
Duckett can bat - we have all witnessed some fine stroke play of his - albeit not too recently
Fletcher is Notts through and through and will do his best to stay there and perhaps get that elusive 50 ?
Tom Moores is well overdue a big score in the 4 day game - he can take a bowling attack apart when things go his way
Ravi Ashwin is a top quality all- rounder with several 100s to his name . He will be keen to make a good impression today to endear himself to the Notts members . He is no spring chicken and may be a trifle sore after his marathon stint of 60 overs in the Essex first innings . But surely he can stay at the crease - he has the experience to do that
Stuart Broad ! What can you say about Stuart . I have seen knocks from Stuart that have electrified the crowd - but not recently unfortunately . The awful facial injury has taken its toll . But surely there are many more runs to come from Stuarts bat ? Again he is one that owes us a gritty , head down and concentrate -score ?
Perhaps today will be the day for Stuart to shine with the bat ?
That just leaves poor old Jake Ball -a shadow of his former self . What on earth has gone
wrong with Jakes ability ? We know he can bat a bit when required.
Of course todays match could be all over in only five balls .
But I fully expect to still be watching Notts bat after lunch . One of the players is bound to get a big score sooner or later and save the day ? perhaps a Duckett and Ashwin stand of 150+ ?
Many on here who read MAGs excellent contributions will remember I offered odds of 9/1 for Notts to get a draw in this match . But there were no takers !
After the mauling that the top table received during Mondays lunchtime forum I reckon several at the club will be shell shocked at the strength of feeling . There was real anger expressed during the meeting and the views of the members are ignored at the clubs peril .
Its pretty obvious that one or two changes have to be urgently made . Notts CCC cannot continue as they are now performing ( or NOT performing).
A change of personel at the top might help , and certainly a change is needed to the batting line up . At least the Club should be seen to be doing something positive to address the current decline in fortunes .
    ANYWAY_ BACK TO DAY !
Come on Notts - prove the doubters wrong. Ger your heads down and graft for a draw and see if that helps the sides confidence

    1. Oh dear, '75 not out' - I bet you have turned red with embarrassment!!! We were never going to bat out today - we simply don't have the talent. It is a disaster. I hope that the committee meet again urgently and start representing the Members opinion and insisting on changes. I travelled almost 90 miles round journey today to witness this batting fiasco - others travel far greater distances to support Notts - it's time we saw some positive improvements. Instead of playing football before the start of play why don't they try playing cricket!!!???

  27. I expect the game to be over by lunch. Maybe then the confirmation of our status will encourage a switch to planning for the future. In particular switching ream selection towards the academy players as well as removing the director of cricket using the cash created to strengthen or replace the coaching set up.

    1. Some guarded credit to Tom Moores, he did resist his natural game for almost an hour before reverting to type but...

    2. Another heavy defeat to add to the catalogue of shame

  29. I read in Matt Davies's report in today's Nottingham Post that the newspaper were told they were not welcome to attend the members forum,

Talk about burying your head in the sand and hoping it will all turn out okay,Short term measures like banning the NP will not stop stories appearing, All it will mean is Notts have no control what is printed...

Notts have few peers in avoiding issues that need sorting , Our present problems are not from just this season, They are the result of a lack of planning for when players retire or leave for pastures anew. From what I understand the area of forward planning comes under the remit of the DoC,, I don't think we need to add more to what has already been said about the job he has done so far, The results are plain to see...

Also mentioned in the report in the NP was that Notts have had a fly on the wall camera following them this season, How lovely to have this of all seasons recorded for posterity, Still I guess watching Notts bat is as good as anything for helping those with sleep problems get off to sleep, Unless of course it gives you nightmares!

  30. About the only positive was we managed to get past lunch today. The team selection has to change now.

  31. Sir Philip, it was good to encounter you today whilst they were all playing football.Apparently its for team dynamic and team bonding just a shame weve not won for 15 games. I think 75no had his tongue firmly in his cheek with those comments but he made some good points and the players should have made a much better stab of it but this side has little fight in it and little direction from the top. If as PM says the players are committed and are working their nuts off them perhaps we need a different set of coaches at the club to progress them?

    1. I was wondering whether or not '51 not out' was your highest score or an aspirational one for one of the the Notts Tailenders! Yes, Peter Moores can't have it both ways - EITHER the lads are good enough or the Coaches are good enough OR both just need more time. really worries me is the lack of explanations to the Supporters of the 'vision' that the Club has - I guess that many of us would accept the 'Team Plan' for the next 3 years with Performance Targets (PI's) built in - so, for instance, it would be something like Monthly averages for both the Team and individual players in respect of a) Batting b) Bowling c) Run outs d) Catches e) Time at the Crease f) Manner of Dismissal g) Manner of wickets taken (i.e. caught off straight delivery; caught off slow leg spin etc.) . The aim being to provide clear Monitoring of Team and individual strenghts and weaknesses. Perhaps this is already being done but it would seem useful for everyone to have clear Targets and clear evidence of areas of strengths and weaknesses. Am I on to something or not?

    2. Let's face it, whatever targets have been set this season for the team and for individuals, no one is hitting them. For me the most worrying aspect is that, yes any player can fall out of form, but not to drop anyone on the grounds of form because they're "a good player" and in time they will come good is the reason to just carry on and make no changes. The time to stop "hoping for the best" to be more pro-active to sort this mire we've got into has passed weeks ago. The batsmen we are employing aren't scoring enough runs or spending enough time in the middle and the bowlers, as good as they are historically, aren't good enough this year.

  32. I am afraid I could go on for days but I will confine myself to two points.

1 Of course it would be very much better and less appalling/embarrassing if the players were playing to their talent/potential. To face facts for a moment, however, if you don't have, or if you choose to assemble a squad that doesn't have, a single batsman who averages 40 (even when to a greater or lesser extent they have played a decent proportion of their innings in the second rather than the first division) it is unlikely that you will score enough runs to win many matches. That, like, in my view, all the other problems we have, is a management issue.

2 While over time the better teams will do better and the worse teams will do worse, on any given day/match any individual, or any team, can bat well or bowl well or bat badly or bowl badly. I have always thought that the definitive signs of a bad team are that they drop catches and they give away silly run outs. I see there was a silly run out the other day and we remain serial offenders for dropped catches. Until those things change we will, I'm afraid, be a bad team even if the batting and bowling improve for a match or two. (It will be interesting to see whether they do change in the 2020 under the influence of Dan Christian.)

  33. I received this in my messages:

    Dear Committee

Why delay anymore, time is not going to fix it. You need to bring about change from top to bottom of the organisation.

Yes this will involve people losing their jobs but your job is to represent the membership of Nottinghamshire CCC and our views were unambiguously made on Monday at the meeting in the Randall suite.

Failure to act now, and the membership could possibly lose confidence in the committee itself, formally.

  34. Another thrashing Surely some personnel changes for next game Otherwise we might as well retire the whole 2nd XI

  35. Two points from match v Essex for @TrentBridge a pretty shattering outcome. For Somerset match, Ashwin in and Broad if available. Mullaney, Fletcher and Nash have earned their places. That leaves 6 players of whom 3 must be dropped. 3, not 2 or 1 , second team players to come in

  36. How has Mr Nash earned selection?

    1. By averaging 34.20 perhaps? Duckett 30.07, Mull 27.93 and Clarke 25.14 are the next best - some sorry numbers meaning no one should be safe. No Broad at Taunton because he's back in his cotton wool sarcophagus.

    1. The Club is fully aware 'Chris Young' that it is NOT being successful and 'Nottsviewer' is correctly pointing out what the Averages are - none of which are acceptable. The DoC and Head Coach are also aware of the gap between 1st & 2nd Division cricket and so they MUST believe that the Div 2 recruits will come good before too long. After the Members Forum last Monday we either accept what Paul Moores says and trust him OR the Committeee has to make a decision on whether to replace him. He is a 100+% commited Coach with huge skills - can he bring that out in others has to be the serious question. Let's see what the game against Somerset produces and then 're-group.'
