CDC Panel Punish Joe Clarke

Extract from the Nottingham Post

Joe Clarke was hit with a four match ban, which he is deemed to have already served, and fined £2,000.

A statement issued by the ECB stated the following: "Firstly, both players received an official reprimand.

"The Panel also ordered the players to attend a suitable course of educational training, under the supervision of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) and ECB.

"The Panel has imposed a suspension of four matches on both players. It is accepted that this suspension is deemed served due to the matches the players missed when they were withdrawn from the England Lions tour in January 2019. They will therefore serve no further suspension.

"Lastly, the Panel also imposed a fine on the players of £2,000 each.

"The Panel took into account the fact that both players cooperated with the ECB from the outset, as well as the evident remorse they have both shown."

Clarke has issued a statement on the ruling as he looks to move forwards with his career.

“With the CDC proceedings completed I would like to apologise to everyone concerned for my involvement in the WhatsApp group," he said.

“I acknowledge that what I did fell well below the standards expected of a professional sportsman. I am relieved I can now put this chapter behind me. I am extremely grateful for the guidance and support I have received from the PCA, Phoenix Management and Nottinghamshire CCC during this difficult time.

“I have learned a great deal over the past two years and I am thankful that I can now move forward and focus wholly on the rest of the season. I hope I can end the year on a positive note with Notts.”

BBCSport 21/06/19 Joe Clarke Charged

Nottinghamshire batsman Joe Clarke and Yorkshire's Tom Kohler-Cadmore have been charged with bringing the game into disrepute by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Clarke, 23, and Kohler-Cadmore, 24, were named as members of a WhatsApp group which came to light during the trial of former team-mate Alex Hepburn.
Hepburn was found guilty of rape in April and jailed for five years.
Neither Clarke nor Kohler-Cadmore were charged with any criminal offence.
Additionally, there is no suggestion of any criminal wrongdoing by the pair.
Their respective ECB charges will be heard by the independent Cricket Discipline Commission.
Clarke and Kohler-Cadmore have been charged with a breach of ECB directive 3.3, which states: "No participant may conduct themself in a manner or do any act or omission at any time which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute."
In the WhatsApp group, Hepburn posted rules of a sexual conquest competition, which he later admitted were "disgusting, horrible and embarrassing".
Hepburn, Clarke and Kohler-Cadmore all played for Worcestershire at the time of Hepburn's offence, which happened in April 2017.

  1. So, he's shit on the field and a shit off it. Top signing 🙄

  2. That's a bit unfair, he's a top class young player, may have played full ODI or even Tests this summer, look how he started the season with us but rumours abound he's now at the back of the queue. This sordid saga has obviously affected him as he's barely scored a bean since his mate got sent down.

  3. It appears to me that he needs to get his head sorted, for both his sake and for Notts.
A spell in the army would toughen him up and might instill some much needed bottle which is certainly absent when he goes out to bat.

  4. We can really pick 'em, eh? Our signings are either rubbish, injury prone or degenerate.

  5. As I have previously stated his attitude towards women seems distinctly poor - he needs to go on some appropriate Gender Equality / Awareness Course. As Notts member we expect better from the Players.

  6. This vile and horrible incident and the aftermath was clearly still pending when MN signed him on a 4 year contract, who on the committee allowed this signing, or can MN just do as he pleases...?
The latest in a very long line of MN's failings

I'm not a big fan of these ECB disrepute charges which seem pompous to me. Joe Clarke if he has any sense will have reappraised his lifestyle and kicked into touch his immature ways. The loss of his reputation is a punishment in itself. It might be a minority view but I think he needs our support rather than being pilloried from all sides. We all saw what a talent he is last season for Worcester at Trent Bridge and on his debut for us against Yorkshire. His current form is awful and treating him like a leper is not likely to improve matters.

    1. And I assume that this is a typical male response.

No this is not a typical male response and I find your reply insulting. I have daughters of my own. Joe Clarke has a lot to do to make amends for his behaviour. I didn't say I accepted his actions. Unfortunately this is the world we live in and young immature men are full of stupid bravado and Hepworth did deserve to go to prison but I find your throw the key away response also rather unbalanced. Clarke needs help and support.

    3. Clearly the lad needs help and support, but also needs to "grow-up".

  8. I agree Philip, as a father of daughters I would not want this horrible young man anywhere near Nottingham, this was a 'sex game' which carried on for a few years and not an isolated one-off aberration..I take the alternative viewpoints, but I would not have contemplated any signing even knowing a few facts...congrats though to worcestershire who got rid of all culprits and sacked their coach for covering this story up

  10. I take the clear view that one should never, and I have never alleged, 'throw the key away' - he needs, again as I made clear, to have relevant 'Awareness' training / therapy. The offence against the young woman was extremely severe and serious and committed whilst she was seriously under the influence of alcohol - she didn't ask or wish to be raped - and sexual intercourse withour consent is rape. I was a social worker / senior manager for over 40 years and very few of these offences ever reach a Court so we have to protect vulnerable females from the likes of these young, foolish and irresponsible young men. Cricket Clubs etc. also need to make players aware of the very real dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and what it can lead to. Whilst Joe was not charged he does appear to have been involved with others in the alleged 'competition' which led up to a colleague committing the offence.

Not a problem with your response and we should all respect fellow forum contributors opinions even if they differ. Hopefully Notts or the ECB will be looking at a re-education programme for Joe. My problem with ECB disrepute charges is that it is often a double punishment and in his case he has lost his reputation and apparently been removed from consideration for England selection in the foreseeable future. I see little point in a fine or a suspension on top of his banishment from the England scene.

  11. Perhaps a new whatsApp, or whatever the thing is called, could be set up amongst some of the players and this time it's a competition to see who contributes the least to Notts red ball campaign (it would be very competitive this season)

  12. The end of season bash, player of the year etc could be interesting, can we vote for the most embarrassing defeat..?
We will be spoilt for choice..!!

  13. 'Male reader' should now accept that the ECB have acted appropriately and taken the matter seriously both for Joe Clarke's own sake as well as to set down a clear marker for other professional cricketers. Whatever Awareness course he attends will be useful and he should emerge from this whole unfortunate episode a better human being. I wish him well.

    1. Yes let's all move on now from this saga. He's paid a heavy price, not the fine thats peanuts to him, but being booted off the England Lions tour and possibly going to the back of the queue by Ash(as Princess Pursestrings now calls him) and his form being affected so dramatically he must be on the verge of losing his place in the Notts line up is punishment enough. PM may apply reverse psychology and keep him in the side and hope the real Joe Clarke can emerge once again now this ECB hearing is over.
