VERREYNNE GUIDES NOTTS TO A SECOND WIN AT THE BECK
Notts made it two out of two at Welbeck today beat Warwickshire by three wickets with nine balls to spare.
Notts won the toss and elected to bowl on a new strip which had more bounce than that used two days previously. The crowd numbered around 900 on a predominantly cloudy warm day. Notts in the middle of an injury crisis with Rob Lord (back) joining the injured list. With Mick Newell’s proposed overseas bowler also being injured and now not coming they drafted in Leicestershire’s seamer Sam Wood on loan. Common sense prevailed with Byron Hatton-Lowe given a deserved chance. Warwickshire were dealt a huge blow before the start with Sam Hain coming down with an ankle injury in the warm up.
Warwickshire got excited with the bounce of the pitch and were too Gung-Ho in their approach losing three wickets in the initial powerplay.
Hutton (Charlie French End) and Hayes opened the bowling. In the 3rd over, Jani (1) was caught behind by Verreynne off a Hutton delivery that nipped away (2 for 1). Jani had made an unbeaten 217 at Lady Bay last week when Warwickshire Seconds beat Notts Seconds by 8 wickets. In the 5th over, Yates pulled Hutton for six over square leg; 12 off the over. Hayes went for 14 in the following over, two fours for Malik and one for Yates. In the 7th over, left-hander Yates (19) attempting to smash the ball to cow corner edged Hutton and was caught by McCann at slip diving high to his right; 36 for 2. In the 9th over, Malik smashed Hutton for 6 over long off; nine off the over. James came on for the 10th over and with his third delivery Malik (29), with Verreynne standing up to the stumps, got a leading edge to backward point where Farhan took the catch; 54 for 3. Warwickshire 58 for 3 off 10 overs.
Smith (6) on the drive was played on to James; 68 for 4 in the 14th over. Pocklington came on for the 15th over - Hutton who always enjoys Welbeck having bowled 7 2 26 2 during his opening spell. Hatton-Lowe came on for the 18th over. Davies (20) inside edged Pocklington on to his stumps; 93 for 5 off 20 overs. Farhan came on for the 23rd over. Hatton-Lowe conceded 13 in the 24th over – three boundaries for Garton. Lintott (5) top edged an attempted reverse sweep off Farhan and Verreynne took the catch; 121 for 6 in the 25th over. The game looked over but Garton (117 off 101 balls; 10x4, 3x6) and Bamber (50 off 53 balls; 7x4) both registered List A bests doubling the score whilst adding 121 for the 7th wicket in 18.2 overs. What made the partnership remarkable was that Garton had previously scored 103 @10.3 and Bamber 137 runs @9.78 in List A cricket.
Pocklington came back for the 26th over. In the 27th over, Bamber obtained successive fours off Farhan. A lofted straight four by Garton off Pocklington took him to his run a ball 50 in the 30th over. Garton hit Farhan for a huge six over long on; 11 off the 31st over. Hayes and James returned for the 32nd and 33rd overs respectively. Garton hit James for 6 over backward square leg in the 33rd over; 8 off the over. Hayes went for nine in the following over, boundaries to both batsmen. Hutton (10 2 35 2) returned for the 36th over and restricted the scoring conceding just nine off his last three overs bowled in succession. Farhan returned for the 37th over. Garton reached his 100 in 87 balls with a four through extra cover aided by a Martindale misfield on the boundary off the expensive Farhan (7 0 55 1) in the 39th over. Warwickshire 227 for 6 off 40 overs.
The returning Pocklington went for 10 off the 41st over. Hatton-Lowe returned for the 42nd over and conceded seven. Bamber (50) got to his 50 off 52 balls with a single off Pocklington in the 43rd over but departed in the same over caught by McCann at deep extra cover; 242 for 7. The crucial and belated breakthrough had arrived. Pocklington ended his tidy spell (10 0 40 3) removing Ali (9) leg before with his last delivery of his 10 over allocation, 252 for 8 off 45 overs. Garton hit Hatton-Lowe (7-0-49-0) for six over square leg and then immediately came down with cramp; 11 off the 46th over. James (8 0 41 3) returned and had Garton (117) caught at long off by Martindale low down on the run (263 for 9). Garlick hit a short ball from Hayes for six over mid-wicket. Hannon-Dalby (9) was caught at long on by McCann off Hayes (7.5 0 57 1), Warwickshire 282 all out off 49.4 overs a lot more than expected after languishing on 121-6 but credit to left-hander Garton in particular who registered his first professional ton. Garlick 9 not out.
Notts needed 283 off 50 overs @5.66 RPO. Bamber (Spion Kop End) and Hannon-Dalby opened the bowling. Slater hit Hannon-Dalby for two fours; 10 off the 6th over. Notts 49 for 0 off 10 overs. Yates replaced Hannon-Dalby for the 12th over. Slater hit Garlick for consecutive fours. McCann then edged him for four; 15 off his opening over. Slater got to his 50 off 48 balls with a lofted four over backward square leg off Garlick in the 17th over. McCann cover drove Garlick for four later in the same over to bring up the Notts 100.
Slater (52 off 52 balls, 8x4), who had earlier been treated for cramp, was caught by Jani at backward point off Yates; 103 for 1 in the 18th over. Taz Ali came on for the 19th over with McCann getting to his 50 off 55 balls with a swept two. McCann innings now being completely dominated with conventional and reverse sweeps. Notts 117 for 1 off 20 overs.
Lintott came on and McCann (62 off 64 balls; 8x4) on the sweep once more was bowled, 130 for two in the 22nd over. In his next over Lintott bowled Hameed (2) through the gate; 138 for 3 in the 24th over. Notts 146 for 3 off 25 overs.
Martindale was dropped on 30 by Jani at mid-wicket above his head off Lintott in the 28th over – it was not a costly miss. Yates came on for the 29th over. Martindale (35 off 37 balls, 4x4) got a leading edge to Yates and was caught by Hannon-Dalby at short third man, 169 for 4 in the 29th over. Martindale once again frustratingly failing to go on to a significant score.
James (11) mistimed Lintott and skied the ball to Garlick who took the well-judged catch at deep mid-off, 190 for 5 in the 32nd over. Notts were well up with the run rate and sensible batting was required and this was provided by Verreynne (68* off 66 balls, 5x4) and Pocklington (31 off 45 balls; 2x4).
Notts reached 200 in the 34th over with a straight four for Pocklington off Yates. But both Notts batsmen realising it was harder to time the ball on the slowing wicket with the ageing ball scored mainly in singles.
Hannon-Dalby (8-1-39-0) returned for the 35th over and in his second over of his new spell he bowled a maiden to Pocklington. Ali returned for the 39th over. Yates finished with 10 0 54 2. Notts 228 for 5 off 40 overs needing a further 55.
Pocklington hit Taz Ali for four to fine leg the first four since the 33rd over, 8 off the 41st over. A four through third man by Verreynne brought up the 50 partnership; 8 off the 42nd over. A four through extra cover off Ali by Verreynne brought up his 50 in 53 balls, seven off the 43rd over. Bamber (7-0-35-0) came back for the 45th over, Verreynne hitting him for an aerial four through extra cover, nine off the over. Verreynne scooped Lintott (10 0 55 3) for 4 through fine leg, 8 off the 46th over. Garlick came back and removed Pocklington (31), who temporarily lost his concentration, with his first delivery caught at extra cover by Bamber; 272 for 6, three off the over. The 6th wicket had added 82 in 14.2 overs.
Farhan (3) skied Ali (9-0-57-1) to Garlick who took his second catch of the innings at mid-wicket, 277 for 7, four off the 48th over. At 18:29 a lofted four for Hatton-Lowe through extra cover off Garlick (4.3-0-36-1) saw Notts home by three wickets with nine balls to spare and put them top of the Group A table.
Notts now have five days off before meeting Leicestershire at Trent Bridge next Tuesday. MAG
So the conflicted DoC, having six weeks to find bowling cover for the called away Mohammad Ali, firstly he found a guy (a proper star performer as it turned out - a hero), but he only secured his services until the quarter finals of the Blast tournament - blushes being saved by clouding over that fact with an unfortunate injury which would have ruled him out last weekend, now looking for that same cover he has secured the services of a unnamed overseas player, has got the paperwork in place, but has yet to get that player into the country.
By some accounts a first choice candidate failed to be granted a work permit, amid the political fallout from that recent infamous failed deportation from the UK.
Meanwhile with Notts bowling resources stretched by the inconsquential competition and players carrying injuries, or rushing back from injuries, the DoC has phoned Titch asked for anyone spare and snatched at a familiar name - Sam Wood.
