Day 3
NOTTS SHOULDER ARMS AND SURRENDER TO ANOTHER THRASHING
Another championship game, another thrashing. Kent achieved a very easy championship victory in the Trent Bridge sunshine today winning by 227 runs. Darren Stevens followed up his first innings figures of 5 for 39 with 5 for 53 to finish with match figures of 10 for 92, narrowly failing to achieve the match double having scored 88 and 0. Well played to him, but once again there was a distinct lack of application from the Notts batsman who could only last 51.2 overs, despite a 7th wicket stand of 75 between Ashwin and Coughlin that occupied 21.4 overs. Notts lost their last four wickets in 32 balls as the match was completed before tea. The crowd at Trent Bridge was very small despite the idyllic weather with many members voting with the feet.
Kent very surprisingly decided to carry on and batted for a further 20 minutes. Patterson-White failed to take the field in the morning and Coughlin completed his over. In the third over of the day Podmore was bowled by Ashwin for 16, 252 for nine. Cox returned to the crease and fell leg before to Ashwin for 20.Kent 259 all out, Ashwin 5 for 89 and Fletcher 3 for 40. Notts needed 440 runs to win.
The Titanic’s deckchairs were rearranged. Steven Mullaney promoted himself to open along with Duckett. The experiment failed miserably for the captain who lost his middle stump after shouldering arms to Stevens (Radcliffe Road) for 10. Two balls later, Nash also decided not to use his bat, shouldering arms although this time the ball hit the pad rather than the stumps, 27 for two in the sixth over. Duckett was bowled by Podmore for 20, 33 for three in the ninth over. The ball had deflected off Duckett’s arm onto the stumps. Stevens picked up his third wicket when Slater was leg before for 19, 64 for four. Stevens 500 wicket for Kent. Slater perhaps a tad unlucky with the verdict. Milnes replaced Stevens and on the stroke of lunch a well pitched up ball from Milnes swung in and bowled Libby for 17, 91 for 5 in the 22nd over. Libby’s contract is due to run out at the end of the season. Lunch was immediately taken.
Moores lasted ten minutes until a dreadful shot saw him slash to Milnes at point off Podmore for nine, 108 for six. The ever professional Ashwin was joined at the crease by Coughlin and a semblance of resistance was found, the 50 partnership came up in 78 balls. Ashwin got to 50 off 77 balls with a leg side four off Stevens. Coughlin on 39 (7x4) edged a Stevens out swinger to Robinson behind the stumps. the seventh wicket had added 75 runs. Next over Ashwin spooned Rayner to Kuhn at short mid wicket to depart for 55 (9x4), 183 for eight, Fletcher got to 10 before being caught at mid wicket by Kuhn off Rayner, 195 for nine. Ball hit a six and a four in his 14, but was last wicket to fall edging Stevens behind as Notts were all out for 212. Patterson-White 5 not out. Notts red ball cricket remains in an appalling state.
Rumour suggests that Status Quo was top of the charts in the committee room last week as the Black Smoke rose it was very much Down Down Deeper than Down! MAG
Day 2
DISPENSABLE VETERAN STEVENS HURRIES NOTTS TO ANOTHER HUGE DEFICIT
This was another horrendous day for Notts as they closed with a deficit of 416 having been in-explicitly bowled out for 124 mid afternoon. Darren Stevens the 43 year old veteran no longer wanted by his county followed up his 88 with a 5 wicket bag. All he had to do was bowl line and length and wobble it a bit, something which appeared beyond the Notts seamers, the admirable Fletcher apart. When Kent replied they passed Notts’ feeble first innings total in the 25th over as they sped to a 400 plus lead at 4.6 RPO. Top scorer for Kent was Sam Billings who in a rare championship outing scored 100 in 106 balls (17x4) and an excellent 82 from Zak Crawley as they gorged themselves on the relative easy pickings that we were served up.
In the fifth over of the morning, Slater (20) who never looked settled edged Podmore (Pavilion End) into Robinson's gloves, 41 for three. In the 23rd over Duckett (8) was caught and bowled by Podmore, the ball sticking in the pitch and Duckett gave the bowler a simple chance low down, 53 for 4.
Acts of charity?
Podmore should have picked up his third wicket as Mullaney on 1 was dropped at third slip by Zak Crawley, a sitter. Notts were riding their luck as Fletcher on 13 was dropped after his head by Kuhn at first slip off Milnes. Fletcher (17) though departed soon after edging Milnes to Crawley at third slip, 77 for five. Patterson-White was dropped by Jordan Cox at short leg off Rayner when on eight. Kent reverted to all spin attack as O'Riordan came on with his off spin. Notts 103 for five off 43 overs at lunch with Mullaney 22 and Patterson-White on 11.
Never long to wait for a Notts collapse!
The timetabled collapse appeared on schedule with the last five wickets going for 20 runs in 10 overs after lunch. Stevens returned straight after the interval and with the second ball had Mullaney leg before for 22, 104 for six. The question was widely asked was why the captain although top scoring had not picked up a bat for nearly a month, when recent second eleven games at Lady Bay would have provided him a chance of gaining valuable match practice. Patterson-White became Stevens third victim caught at slip by Rayner for 11, 111 for seven. Ashwin was next to fall plumb leg before to Podmore for seven, 111 for eight. Moores then fell leg before to Stevens for one, 117 for nine. Coughlin (8) was the last wicket to fall skying to Podmore at mid on as Stevens went nap, Notts 124 all out. Ball 4 not out. Another zero batting point haul for Notts. Stevens 5 for 39. Luke Fletcher faced 74 balls, more than any of his other 10 team mates, which probably summed up how bad the batting had been, lacking technique and application. Kent seam bowling was much sharper and more accurate than their Notts counterparts. Mr Donald’s attention to detail was clear for all to see.
Bell-Drummond fell to a slip by Coughlin at third slip off Fletcher for nine, 25 for one. Coughlin replaced Ball from the Pavilion End and Jordan Cox was hit and on the arm by the North Easterner and had retire on 13 with the Kent score 42 for one. Fletcher bowled a typically wholehearted 8 over spell and was replaced by Ashwin. Patterson-White bowled the last over before tea. Kent 95 for one after 20 overs with Crawley on 38 and Billings on 31.

The game was only going one way in spite of Fletcher's bet efforts!
Crawley and Billings milked the Notts attack after tea bringing the 100 stand in just 98 balls. Fletcher returned from the Pavilion End and with his first ball got Crawley to play onto his leg stump to depart for 82 off 102 balls (19x4, 2x6), 165 for 2 in the 34th over. Fletcher struck again as Kuhn (5) tickled him behind as Moores took the catch, 175 for three. Fletcher clearly Notts man of the season, his effort appreciated by the long suffering members. Robinson (8) was plumb leg before to Ashwin bowling from the Radcliffe Road End, 186 for four. Stevens fell in identical fashion in the same over, falling for a two ball duck, 186 for five. O'Riordan (9) was bowled behind his legs attempting a sweep shot off Patterson-White (Pavilion End), 227 for six. Rayner fell in the next over bowled by Ashwin for a 3 ball duck, 228 for seven. A straight four by Billings saw him to his ton in 105 balls but he perished next ball to a smart catch to his left by Patterson-White for 100. Stumps was immediately drawn at 1810 with Kent 236 for eight. Expect Kent to declare overnight and Notts to slump to another heavy defeat; that infamous Northants team of the 1930s seems to been have reincarnated 80 years on! MAG

Day 1
VETERAN STEVENS THWARTS NOTTS' PROGRESS
as day one ends at "advantage Kent"
Kent finished the first day in a strong position after recovering from 119 for five to post an above par 304 and followed it up by removing Libby and Nash as Notts closed on 35 for two, 269 runs behind.
Forty three year old Darren Stevens was the star from the Hop County with 88 off 90 balls (10x4,1x6), being well supported by Heino Kuhn with 55 and Daniel Bell-Drummond with 45. Stevens opening the bowling dismissed Libby with his sixth ball, Notts lost two wickets in 12 overs in the early evening sunshine. The returning Ashwin bowled well early on claiming 4 wickets in his first 17 overs but was less effective later as Stevens milked him with six players on the boundary. Notts bowling was mixed with Patterson-White although claiming two wickets going for five an over and Ball and Fletcher picking up a solitary wicket in 28 overs of bowling. Pleasingly Coughlin did pick up three tail end wickets with a Notts best 3 for 37. On a wicket taking some turn, Kent will be well pleased with their eventual total. Notts once more face an uphill battle.
Kent won the toss and elected to bat. Clarke was dropped as Mullaney came back in after his 8 week injury absence. Ashwin replaced Luke Wood. Fletcher (Radcliffe Road End) and Ball (Pavilion End) opened the bowling. In the fifth over of the day Fletcher had Crawley leg before for three, 18 for one. With the score on 39 for one after 12 overs including 15 extras, Ashwin came on for Fletcher to start a 21 over spell from the Radcliffe Road End. Coughlin replaced Ball in the 16th over. After a six over spell Coughlin was replaced by Patterson-White. Jordan Cox added 54 for the second wicket with Daniel Bell-Drummond until the youngster was leg before to one that turned towards the batsman to the economical Ashwin for 22. In his next over Ashwin got another to turn and it found the edge of Billings bat, Mullaney taking the catch at slip, Billings out for 4. Lunch was immediately taken with Kent 78 for three off 32.3 overs with Bell-Drummond on 34.
Fletcher came back after lunch from the Pavilion End. Twenty minutes after lunch Ashwin had Bell-Drummond stumped by Moores for 45 (7x4), 105 for four. Robinson was all at sea against Ashwin and it was no surprise when Ashwin bowled him with his arm ball for 6,119 for five. Stevens and Kuhn went on the attack with the 50 runs partnership being achieved in 47 balls. Ashwin had bowled a marathon 21 overs spell, taking 4 for 67. But having conceded 32 off his previous four overs was given a rest and was replaced from the Radcliffe Road End by Patterson-White. Kuhn got to his 50 off 67 balls with a single off Ball. The Kolpak man using the reverse sweep effectively against the spinners. Kuhn (56) drove Patterson-White low to Coughlin at mid off who safely held the chance, the sixth wicket stand was worth 69 runs in 14 overs. Ashwin after a seven over rest switched ends to the Pavilion End. Kent got to the break on 211 for six after 65 overs with Stevens on 43 and O'Riordan 9. (The latter a 21 year old off spinning all rounder from Tonbridge School making his first-class debut.)
The veteran Stevens got to his 50 twenty minutes after tea with a two off Fletcher (Pavilion End). Marcus O'Riordan (12) slashed Patterson-White to Mullaney at slip, 235 for seven; the slow left armer picking up a wicket in the first over of a new spell from the Pavilion End. Rayner raced to 26 (19 balls) before edging Coughlin to Moores, the seamer's first wicket at Trent Bridge for Notts, 279 for eight. Coughlin struck again four overs later as Podmore (11) edged him to Duckett at first slip, 299 for nine. Stevens (88) was the last man to fall caught on the cover ropes by Ball off Coughlin, Kent 304 all out off 81.4 overs. Ashwin 4 for 121, Coughlin 3 for 37.

Advantage Kent!
Libby departed in the second over of the reply, leg before to that man Stevens (Radcliffe Road End) for a single, 5 for one. Podmore bowled a four over spell and his replacement Milnes removed Nash's off stump with his first ball of his Trent Bridge return, 26 for two. Nash out for 11, Milnes clearly a better and faster bowler under White Lightning’s expert tutelage. Fletcher came in as night-watchman and survived as Notts limped to 35 for two off 12 overs with Slater on 18 and Fletcher on 1 as stumps were drawn at 1740. MAG
Announced Squad of 14:
Jake Libby
Ben Slater
Chris Nash
Steven Mullaney
Joe Clarke
Ben Duckett
Tom Moores
Liam Patterson-White
Paul Coughlin
Ravi Ashwin
Zak Chappell
Luke Wood
Luke Fletcher
Jake Ball
After the distractions of the Blast, it's back to the bitter reality of the hole that those in charge at Trent Bridge have dug for the club.
Mathematically Notts could escape relegation with victories over Warwickshire and firstly against Kent but realistically no one will be expecting Warwickshire to implode to the extent to allow Notts to leapfrog them into seventh position, even if Notts won three games (Surrey away being the other match).
Notts would have to overcome:

Notts would have to overcome:
- the form of the past 15 months or so
- the form of the past decade or more of historic September cricket played by Mick Newell's Notts sides which is in the main dire
- the dismal championship playing form of the bowlers and the batsmen in 2019 where in the graphic above you can see the margins of defeat. Games haven't just been lost, we've been slaughtered
Questions
Is Ravi Ashwin back in the UK? Answer yes back and training
Will Steven Mullaney make a possibly premature return following surgery? Answer yes Mull returns as skipper
Will Paul Coughlin play again?
Will the "great white hope" of our bowling attack for the "next decade", Zak Chappell be "available" to lead the fight?
Has Jake Ball been looking for his mo-jo and has he found it yet?
Should Notts look to to build a side now with a view to gaining promotion next season, bringing in some fresh stock from the Seconds to see who will and can adapt and grow into a Championship cricketer?
Surely we must bring in some fresh blood to prepare for next season. We are relegated, let's not clutch at straws.
ReplyDeleteDon't expect Zak Chappell to play, he was told to bowl at 70percent last week for the stiffs whilst he awaits an operation at the end of the season and didn't bowl at all in their first innings. Coughlin had a long bowl and decent bat and expect him to play. Regarding fresh blood, the problem is who is there to pick ? Lyndon James and Chris Gibson haven't done anything to get a chance. Compton has played well but surely you wouldn't throw him into a relegation scrap on the basis of a few good knocks on Lady Bay. Blatherwick ? Could he make his FC debut ? I don't think any drastic changes will be made until the inevitable relegation is actually confirmed. Interesting with Ashwin, has anyone any news with him. Didn't play in the tests recently but hope he is back. Has shown real professionalism in a near hopeless cause. Assume Mullaney would have played last week if he anywhere near fit but there has been no news regarding his recovery recently
DeleteWhy play a player in need of an operation, if he can't do his job or only performs at 70% - should have the op now.
DeleteAshwin is here and is training ahead of the game
DeleteAdvertising alert, brought to you by Trent Bridge:
ReplyDeleteSpectators who are looking for no-obligation advice about their mortgage or property portfolio are being invited to Ryley Wealth Management's mortgage surgery, on days two and three of Nottinghamshire's Specsavers County Championship fixture against Kent.
Ryley Wealth Management Financial Planner Keiran Dunne, a Nottinghamshire fan, will be on hand on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 September in the Pavilion between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
The surgery is designed to assist those who are thinking about re-mortgaging, buying their first home or growing their property portfolio.
The organisation offers range of mortgages from across the market, which lenders make available to mortgage intermediaries.
My advice would be firstly to those with the time to be at such an event during a working day would to GET A JOB!!!
DeleteIts a scam to get their greedy hands on pensioners pots of cash so beware
DeletePerhaps if Mr Dunne has a colleague that advises pensions, he could come in and show Mick Newell that it is possible for him the retire today.
DeleteWhat about those with little or no money who struggle to make ends meet and rely on such assistance as Food Banks and can't afford the big cars we see being driven by several of the hierarchy and players at the Club - never mind being able to eat in 'Six' - or even 'The Cricketers' now that prices have been significantly increased this Season?
ReplyDeleteThe ECB and by extension Lisa P arent interested in those people They do not fit the socio economic group for the new source of spectators
DeleteI agree it's totally inappropriate of the club to be running what is effectively a private recruitment session for this man and his company but do you think we could leave out the pathetic Corbynite jealousy that infects Britain's leftist idiots please. This is a cricket forum and most cricket fans / players I've ever known are certainly not lefties - in political terms anyway.
ReplyDeleteNothing 'leftist' at all in what has been said - just FACT.
DeleteUltimately it's all about cash, Notts won't be offering something like this for free , You can be certain they will be charging the company a fair amount of money to use their facilities.
ReplyDeleteMy view is that there is time and place for this sort of activity, A cricket match is neither the right place or the right time to offer this service.
Notts need to look at themselves and ask where their priorities should lie, We are after all a cricket club, Surely their energies should be aimed in that direction, Not at making money for another company...
By using "their energies" you surely mean Yu Energy - it's all about money, money - as the song says and Trent Bridge has a price tag on everything. Just wait til we join the other counties and have sold the name of TB to the highest bidder.
DeleteI wish some 'energy' would be used from somewhere is appointing a new bowling coach and after this season, do we now need a batting coach also? The only right or left that concerns me personally is how a batsman lines up.
ReplyDeleteBut it helps when bowlers can move the ball from left to right - and vive versa!!! Is Matt Carter a 'leftist'?
DeletePerhaps we should recruit a new DOC named Boris.
ReplyDeleteThat should dispel any leftist theories
Yes, perhaps we should bring ex politicians to the management team/hierarchy as you could argue there's plenty of similarities. They seem to be vastly overpaid, unaccountable, failure to see reality and accept defeat and instead of getting sacked when they've made a complete mess of things, instead tend to get a sideways move. This sounds perfect recruitment to me and better still, not advertise any vacancies just appoint who you want.
ReplyDeleteCrikey I thought I’d logged into a political/brexit blog at one point.
ReplyDeleteSo reading the comments in players, I wonder what the team will be. Slater/Nash/Libby:Ducker/ Clarke?/Moores/Cogs//LPW/Ashwin /Fletcher/Ball?
Room for 2 different players instead of Clarke and Ball if we’re brave enough.
No squad announced as yet. I did read that Mullaney was to return, but club post appears to have been subsequently deleted.
DeleteIt is that 11 plus Wood, Mullaney and Zak. So you would guess that Mullaney will play (for Libby maybe?), and maybe Wood for Ball??
DeleteI would ike to see Blatherwick get a go. I think we need to pick Fletch for sure, maybe 2 spinners even in September. When there is a mathematical chance we should go for it, bit still pick some youngsters. They did not get is in this.mess, and the 2s have had a decent season
ReplyDeleteBlatherwick hasn't been pulling-up any trees with the 2s whilst driving around in his Merc this year, but we appear to be paying the lad a sizable wedge, so why not give him go? Gurney's wickets haven't been found so maybe Blatherwick could step-up and repay all that faith put into him over the last couple of years at least.
DeleteThe team selection has all the imagination of a wet paper bag containing a dozen eggs.
DeleteB&H Cup makes comeback!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe first day of Nottinghamshire's Second XI friendly with Derbyshire was abandoned due to inclement weather at the Pattonair County Ground.
Play was called off before a ball was bowled, with the sides agreeing to hold a 55-over per side clash on day two.
The contest is due to begin at 10.30am on Tuesday 10 September.
Looking forward to report on this day, day 1. Sort of good to some extent. I thought everyone bowled pretty well, with discipline and huge amount of effort. The ground fielding was excellent, and the team spirit was much better. Jake Ball looked much more like his self, and if he bowls like that regularly the wickets will come. But vital missed chances stopped us getting Kent out for circa 240, and we reacted very slowly to Stevens etc decision to attack. I love attacking fields, but we have to be realistic if run start to flow against us.
ReplyDeleteDeep concern over batting. Yes Chris got a beauty, but we looked jittery once again. Somehow we need to match them scorewise, then catch everything when they bat again. This match can be won, but catches do indeed win matches and missing them is so costly
Trying to remember when we went into a red baller with such an average batting unit. Are we going back to the days of Gie, Archer, Tolley, HighNoon etc? Shows just how paper thin our first team squad is with one player dropped for poor form and another on loan. Having said that, there attack is nowt to fear when you have Darren Stevens taking the new cherry aged 96 and bowling at 35 mph. Agree about Milner. From those brief overs, he looked a yard quicker than the bloke I saw for the stiffs at the palatial Bay. Guess it helps when you've got a top bowling coach at your club................Hope the lads prove me completely wrong and get a first innings lead which I guess we will need as batting last.
ReplyDeleteWarwicksire 269 for 3 so doing us no favours!!! Relegation seems inevitable.
ReplyDeleteGood news that Ball apparently bowled better than his figures suggest.
ReplyDeleteWe wont see Joe Clarke again this season will we? Amazing he can start the season mentioned in England terms, and end it so anonymously.
The batting is weak. Positions 5-9 filled with "apparent" all rounders (Mull, Ashwin, Moores, LPW, Cogs). That seldom works in my opinion
Positions 1-3/4 need to have established Batsmen; 4/5-9 with all-rounders is a real plus and 10-11 established Bowlers. I have no issues with that. Liam Patterson-White is, I believe, mainly regarded as a batsman (he has had some astounding 2nd 11 scores) whose strength to dat in the 1st 11 is his bowling - we need to give him an extended 1st 11 run to hope that his batting comes good as well as to even improve further his bowling - he is a bright prospect. Paul Coughlin also seems to have enormous potential and we equally need to maintain him in a 1st 22 spot. Steven Mullaney is coming back from injury and has been an outstanding asset to the 1st 11 Side - I would certainly keep him as Captain for next Season at least, the ills of the 4-day Game can not be laid at his feet. Ashwin is not a regular full-time player but has been superb and, by all acounts, an excellent source of help and encouragement to more junior players. What I feel has been the under-lying problem at Notts is the 'off-field' influences of some of the players behaviours coupled with what appear to be serious failures by the Coaching staff presided over, of course, by the Director of Cricket. Next Season in Division 2 needs to be a serious 'wake up' call to the whole Club - Executive; Committee; Coahes ; Players; staff and members alike - there has to be a demonstrable all-round improvement for the sake of our wonderful Club.
ReplyDeleteSo, 'jagella' we see in the current Match Libby; Slater; nash and Duckett only managed 40 runs between them - we now need Positions 5-9 to 'fire.'
ReplyDeleteTrue - I think probably I was making the point that we have little other realistic selection choices. I do agree though that there is the core of a team there. The morale must be at an all time low though.
DeleteThey didn't, however, "fire". I managed to nip down for an hour just after lunch. Stevens and Podmore bowling - the former swinging it nicely from left handers off stump into the batsman. To me he looked like Mullaney looks, and Podmore looked no better than Ball. But their results - Kent now 134-1 - are somewhat different!
Wonder if Kent might declare today at this rate!!
The final indignity for Notts with a 43 year old taking 5 wickets and scoring 88 against us. We are clearly going to end the championship with zero wins. If this is not a resigning issue for the Director of Cricket and his coaches nothing will be. I have seen better batsmen in the Bassetlaw League.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten how bad we were after seeing 20 over wins
ReplyDeleteWe keep on picking batsman who have failed all season. Time to bring in some from the second team, whether they're up to it or not. They can hardly be any worse.
ReplyDeleteI sort of lost it today. With measured words I shouted very loudly at the Notts players ready to take the field after being yet again brushed aside for a pathetic score, this time against a very modest attack "Get out there and fight, this is just not good enough" A player responded by saying "That is true." and another comment I did not hear which others did and apparently was very unpleasant. I have had enough, enough of pretending Did not go to the governance meeting as I think we all pretty much know what their game is. Sick of our CEO, and DoC. Sick of the political games, of the CC being marginalised and shoved to the side, hurting our county and our country in First Class Cricket. Sick of our amateur approach and being outplayed by every team we come up against. Sick of T20 success being used as cover for our lack of basic batting technique. Sick of serial failures in our so called batting line up. Sorry for our bowlers, especially Ravi and Fletch, who are magnificent. Sick if pretending our keeper and slips can catch the ball or stump anybody. Club reeks of placemen and woman, who contribute nothing to us but decline
ReplyDeleteYes, all very true, and dishartening if you are a long suffering Notts supporter.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, you would probably have derived more pleasure in watching paint dry than suffer the torment of our 4 day ( sorry I mean 2/3 day) displays this season.
Somebody mentioned today that we would have had a good first division bowling attack with Luke Wood,Hutton, Milnes and Fletcher.
Unfortunately, apathy and poor management has allowed 3 other these to depart, and I suggest that Jake Ball should get on the phone to Allan Donald while he is in Nottingham, to rectify his run up and follow through, as he did for Milnes, as obviously Mr Pick has drawn a blank.
The club is crying out for a new direction with someone with the necessary vision and ability to identify talent, to get the club back on the straight and narrow.
As an eminent politician quoted this week in reference to our decaying political system," we need to drain the
swamp".
I suggest that this is equally true of our beloved cricket club.
Where to start ?
ReplyDeleteWe came into this match knowing only a mathematical miracle could save us, You would at least expect some passion in our attempts to achieve the impossible.
Sadly that was largely lacking,Bowling wise we showed the the result of three years mismanagement of our club by our DoC, Hutton,Milnes and now Wood have all been allowed to leave, Where are the replacements ? We signed Zak Chappell and then hardly play him ,We also signed Paul Couglin in the full knowledge that like ZC he was injury prone.
Then you look at the batting... Its fair to say it's been nothing short of horrendous all season, We have batters woefully out of form, Not one Notts player shows the application needed to play the long innings we so desperately need, Again the blame must be in a large part due to decision by the man at the tops choice of signings
Any Notts fan will tell you both Duckett and Clarke whilst undoubtedly talented are not noted for backs to the wall attrional defence. We desperately need someone prepared to sell their wicket dearly.
No doubt as others have mentioned the club will point to one day success,That's all very well but cricket will suffer if the fascination with the one day game persists Where will players learn the basics if they are expected to slog from ball one ? We are already reaping the rewards for our obsession with T20 in our succession of awful first inning CC scores this season.
So what's the answer, We seem to have a committee who are more interested in sitting on their comfy seats than in sorting out the mess they helped create.Maybe if they mixed with the members more they would realise that many are actively considering not renewing their membership
I along with may others hope they will act as this car crash of a season draws to a close and sort out the coaching and management of our club
Somehow though given their performances so far I fully expect to be disappointed,
I do actually really feel for you all. The mortgage event sounds really squalid and I am a mortgage advisor myself and proud to be so but a cricket match is not the place for that as someone else said. I am surprised at Notts as I did feel that you felt like a members club for that small period that I was a member . Maybe that was just a matter of being so used to being badly treated as a Lancashire member that anything would have seemed good.
ReplyDeleteI’m glad that Steve Mullaney still seems to be highly thought of. He was a professional in local cricket here in Liverpool and a friend of mine captained him and said he was an absolute joy to have as a pro; so good an example and put so much into developing young players. Still surprised that Peter Moores does not get more stick but maybe the dislike of Newell protects him. That was certainly the case at Lancashire with the members dislike of Mike Watkinson.
And full marks to the Upper Hound Road 'crystal ball gazer' who predicted that Luke Fletcher would give the post-day's-play Interview last night on the grounds that he, at least, would, say it as it was and not come up with unpalatable excuses. He was, as always, open and honest and he is right that someone (or more than one) needs to do something special today - I very much hope that they do.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see Mullaney and Duckett opening the second Innings - let's watch and see if this is a better tactic. Congratulations Ashwin on a 'Fivefer.'
ReplyDeleteInteresting this day 3 that Notts have opened with Mull and Duckett. I’d like to think that this is a case of saying “right. I’m captain. You’re an England opener from recently let’s take responsibility”.
ReplyDeleteIn truth Notts have done well (since I went home yesterday!). Kent went from 165-1 to all out 94 runs later. Just those poor 2 sessions yesterday which again mean likely defeat.
All I hope for is a rousing 2nd innings effort.
Yeah like that was ever going to happen.
DeleteGood stand Ashwin and Cogs. Whilst welcome it is too little too late. But good on them.
DeleteOh dear - again!!! It didn't work. Still, a clear vote of support in our cricket-savvy Committee who see no reason to change things - "Didn't they do well!!!"
ReplyDeleteWill we get to the dizzy heights of 150, this time around?
ReplyDeleteIt is utterly unacceptable - the Committee needs to again meet urgently and DO SOMETHING. The 2 Ben's (Ben 'T20' Slater and Ben 'T20' Duckett) amassed 39 runs between them on which 32 were in Boundaries. No pride; no guts; no technique - time for a good clear-out. How doesw Mick Newell justify signing these Players and what on earth are the Coaching staff doing? It is time for someone to come clean and tell us just what is so severely wrong.
ReplyDeleteDuckett has been poor hasn’t he. Slater I have more sympathy with - he is at a different stage in his career. But Duckett seems to get out to silly shots, plays a shot a ball, isn’t the big whizz either in T20 (cue a great finals day performance from him / here’s hoping!). He’s now miles away from test selection and presumably on big money delivering v little for Notts.
DeleteAnother disgraceful display by our batmen.
ReplyDeleteJust got home. The only highpoint of the two days I saw being the Ashwin & Coughlin stand today. Batting positions 1 through to 6 utter rubbish and no conviction. Duckett who I had great expectations of this season has been poor, out to poorly judged shots every time I have seen him. The others are not good enough, and what has happened to Mullaney who used to be so dependable. Bring back Hales to red ball cricket at least from him you got one good score from every three or so.
ReplyDeleteCan't fault the bowlers who just have not enough to defend but where has Jake Balls form gone.
Not everything can be blamed on the coaching staff but surely radical action is needed there and with the players.
Yes, nice Cricket from Ravi, Coughlin, Fletch, LPW and Ball at the end, but the game was gone. Top order the worst I have seen at any level this season
ReplyDeleteAnd the usual silence of non criticism by Mr dB is deafening
ReplyDeleteSo "we need to play with pride" "play for the badge" - but it just isn't acceptable and whilst they may indeed be working harder than ever the results of that are not visible - they may as well not be trying at all. Luke Wood ought to have played along with Matt Carter. As stated before we have to stick with Liam Patterson-White and hope that Zak Chappell comes good next Season. We also have from the 2nd 11's Sol Budinger who will be returning from injusy and we need to see if Ben Compton is a possibility. Perhaps an aged bowler from Kent may we worth recruiting despite only getting some 10 wickets in this Match!!! If the current Coaching staff can't manage to motivate the players then hard logic says to me that some changes need to be made - the players have let Peter Moores (who is a really good, open and honest, hard-working Coach and a 'jolly good egg' to boot) down badly as well, of course, as themselves. The T20 Finals Day provides at least some opportunity to finish on a high but will do nothing to address the very real problems in the 4-day Side. As someone said today "there is a cancer in the Club" - the members look to the Director of Cricket (who many also regard as a good man) to publicly accept responsibility for the Players that HE has signed - the time for personal relationship sympathies is gone - we now need positive actions otherwise it won't be just a short sojurn in Division 2.
ReplyDeleteFor all the hype that Peter Moores is "the best coach I ever worked with", in the Championship his record for Notts is poor, if not very poor. 2 Relegations, 1 scraped promotion and 1 clinging on by virtue of a technicality (number of wins). Coaching 1 on 1, no batsman has been develped or brought on during his time at TB either. He might be a nice guy to work with (I am not qualified to comment) but he hasn't done anything to make Notts better in the Championship. The last two seasons have been dire watching the decline at TB. We all are hurting!!!
DeleteThe Girdler is embarrassing being more interested acting the smiling joker than calling it how it is. Worst Notts team in my lifetime and I saw my first game in 1961. If Mr Tennant is happy with the DOC and the coaches the lunatics have taken over the asylum. Sad to say but a 20/20 Cup win will not be beneficial to the club as the head in the sand committee will become even more entrenched.
ReplyDeleteNever does criticise them
DeleteSo - time to reflect. I am minded to go for the committee next year and will begin by posting as Jim G after this post.
ReplyDeleteThere are 3 points - possibly 4 - to make
a: Next season personnel
Not much different methinks. Nash and Cogs are in last year (I think) of their contracts. Career defining for them I would say. Slater and Libby score runs in Div 2 - we know that. And so did Clarke and Duckett (more on them later). Mull will be captain; Fletch and Ball the main seamers. We need to replace Wood - perhaps his replacement is called Chappell. We are still a seamer light I think and I don't consider Broad pre-test match, or any short term overseas player to be a "fix" here.
Interesting to see what happens with Moores (T....and P!)
LPW for Samit in a changing of the guard; but the core will be the same - because...….
b: There is no more money...…..
...or whatever the labour finance person wrote when the coalition came into power.....
I don't know what the budgets are but consider - and guessing salaries is crass - but look what has happened in the last 3 years
i: We are paying for Moores in addition to MN. He wont be cheap.
ii: Duckett and Clarke will not have been cheap either. Same for Nash. Hales will have increased his demands/ability to earn. Pattinson too; Christian - same; Ashwin - same again. Probably Gurney too. Like it or not, these players have earned the right to be at the more expensive end of the market. Even Footitt from Surrey and Cogs from Durham would have cost something - they were brink of England players when we got them in.
Compare who has left in that time: Root, Milnes, Fraine, Wessells, Lumb (the last 2 probably in the higher bracket but not top salaries). Maybe we saved money on not having Sodhi this year, but Wasim probably consumed that
I'd be certain that our playing budget has gone up enormously in the last 3 years; but it means that we don't have the resources to change things. The players currently being selected are being so because in truth there is nobody else.
C: Club communication: Documented elsewhere on this site. It could be better. "All in" is an interesting documentary - but it isn't communication. Nor is "Covered". People want approachability, presence, verbal communication etc.
And membership pricing goes up again. No loyalty discount (that said, our prices are not bad vs the competition - just do a google search). The "crowd" v Kent showed I think what might happen if we are not careful; the crowds for the T20 show what happens if you engage the public - they have doubled in the last 2 years.
D: So what next?
The Second XI has to mean something. Can they play more at TB? What is the "pathway" How do we develop a squad where there is genuine competition for places?
What does the coaching staff look like? This year hasn't worked. They all seem good people. they are articulate, credible etc. But it hasn't worked. Batting is shot and, Fletch apart, the seamers haven't moved on. Any appointments have to address those 2 issues (maybe through 2 people).
I hope the last 2 games do no destroy players forever. Whither Joe Clarke? Dropped for the T20, dropped for the 4 day. Well documented "issues". He has to come back from that. He isn't the only one but will be a good case in point for how Notts recover from here.
'jagella' - Do you have a proposer and Seconder if you decide to stand for the Committee? - if not, email me and we can arrange to discuss further.

Some good points and summing up made on various posts .
ReplyDeleteThere was a sad, forlorn atmosphere to-day at Trent Bridge when the match ended mid - afternoon . Members robbed of yet another days cricket at Trent Bridge . Smiling faces were hard to find and the "feel-good' factor was nowhere to be seen .Just sad resignation with a touch of anger at yet another relegation to the relative dross of Division 2.
I have no idea how many people connected to the Club read our views but I would like to make a simple appeal .
Big Fletch must be selected to play in the T20 Finals a week on Saturday . He deserves to play in it whilst others do not . I am sure they know who they are . Yesterday -the second day - Fletcher bowled himself to almost exhaustion with a long ,accurate and aggressive spell . Even though the match was already lost .
So if it means dropping a so called star bowler to let Fletch into the side then so be it . He is capable of belting the ball to the boundary and over it and his lethal Yorkers could make a big vital difference .
So we have to wish our side the very best of luck in the Final and hope they somehow come good and win it .
It would make an otherwise dreadful season slightly more easy to stomach .
What do others think ?
Totally agree Fletch deserves some reward for his wholehearted bowling against Kent , Howver the chances are that Notts will look to fill any vacancies in the T20 final side with the more fleet of foot Coggers. Fletch for all his death bowling skills is very similar to Harry Guerney in the field, Neither are that mobile and as we all know runs saved in the field can be the difference between winning and losing.
DeleteRemember the Yorkshire game. Who would you want bowling at the death. Fletch or Cogs? No choice in my view.
DeleteAsuming Wasim is cleared how could you POSSIBLY make a change to that team that thrashed the Panthers. SKY were raving about the bowling unit that limited their all star side to a total way under par on that decent deck. Fletch did very well but t20 is COMPLETELY different to red ball. Gurney was the star bowler in the final 2 years ago and like Baz gets franchise deals for a reason.Seabiscuit offers pace in the PP and wicket taking deliveries, fletch tends to get murdered in the first 6 with DC having to bowl his overs.Big Fletch deserves credit for his red ball bowling this and last season but PLEASE less not confuse effort with skillset. Its a semi final and you have to pick your best side. Theres no sentiment that comes into it.
DeleteBaz is so unpredictable these days. Gets expensive early on, rubbish in the field, doesn't bat and only turns up for the last over. (although hearts in mouth in the Yorks game, when he clouted for 6 with his first ball!)
ReplyDeleteHe can be a match winner, but needs to do it more consistently.
Fletch is as committed to the cause as you can get. But have batsmen worked him out? He's been sent to the boundary too many times now. And when we are chasing, the runs he gives away sometimes become too much for us.
Haz rather than Baz. I would say he won us that game against Yakshur, when we really shouldn't have. I agree with Kevin in that T20 has nothing to do with FCC and changing a now winning formula to reward Fletcher is not appropriate unless there are other forced changes of personnel.
DeleteLooks like I have been outvoted and the gallant Fletch will only be carrying the drinks tray ..
ReplyDeleteI would still play him because of his keenness and work ethic . Plus the fact that he has taken the most wickets for Notts this season .Everyone gets clobbered in T20 - its just a matter of degrees . Conceding SIX an over nowadays is considered a triumph !Gurney and Fletcher to bowl the last two overs in a T20 match could well be a winning combination . I take the point about lack of mobility in the field of play . But Notts have several sluggish players in the team . Notts are not going to win the trophy on fielding prowess . Tight bowling and a rapid 60/70 from Hales is probably our best hope . Looking at the averages its surprising how many runs Can Christian concedes nowadays . But a fine all- round player non the less .
So barring Divine Intervention we are now relegated . So it must be time to experiment with some Second 11 players . Give them a chance to shine . Notts have got nothing to lose by doing this . I am sure we are a laughing stock after gaining so few points in the 4 day game .
THE SEASON PROMISED SO MUCH !
WHAT ON EARTH HAS GONE WRONG ?
How can virtually the whole team be out of form at the same time ?
The total wage bill this year must be astronomical . But what has been achieved . Some players must hang their heads in shame when they look back at the dross served up to the long suffering members this season !?
I'd have Fletcher in my team any day of the week. He always gives 100%, unlike some of the others.
DeleteNo idea who Haz and Baz are
ReplyDeleteMe neither. I wishes nicknames could be dropped. What is wrong with using 'Hales', 'Fletcher', 'Broad', etc? Then we'd all know what is being discussed.
DeleteA polite request to those who administrate this excellent site - no doubt at considerable personal cost and effort .
ReplyDeleteIs it possible someone could post up the aprox Questions and Answers that are voiced during the forthcoming Members Forum meeting on Tuesday 17th Sept ? I was looking forward to attending but a hastily arranged holiday now prevents me from being there . I know of others in a similar situation . This particular Forum probably has greater relevance than usual because of the dire first team performances of which much has been written about on here . Perhaps Philip Measures could do the honours if others are unable to ?It would be greatly appreciated to know of the TOP TABLE response to some no doubt probing and angry questions !
This was raised at the recent Governance Meeting and I think that the disquiet expressed will now be acted on - the Club had previosuly agreed to put Minutes on the Web Site - although I expect that 'mags' or someone else will provide the 'unauthorised' / unexpurgated version on NottsView!!!
DeleteIn case anyone is not certain Baz is Alex Hales and Seabiscuit is Luke Wood. These are the knicknames the players themselves have given them. Coach Peter(a thoroughly nice man) is still citing the young players argument. I don't see that many, LPW and Moores himself. But whilst LPW just needs time to get to grips at this level compared to the stiffs, I don't think its inexperience with Tom Moores. He just doesn't seem to want to apply himself in red ball these days. Talking of the stiffs, anyone have any idea why Mull and possibly Jake Ball were not having a run out last week if they were going to play this game. In Mullaney case, in particular, this seems astonishing to me.
ReplyDeleteHard to argue with any of that. I wonder if other counties treat the seconds with the same disdain that our first xi appear to? When I worked at Derbys 30 years ago (long story), I saw many a second xi game where seasoned pros and in some cases international players stepped down to the seconds to gain fitness/form
DeleteNickname Question
ReplyDeleteYears ago which player was known as THE HEAVY ROLLER ?
Clue - Became an Umpire some time after leaving Notts CCC
OK - who was it?
