Day 3
SOMERSET CRUISE TO VICTORY
but Patterson-White gives hope for the future
Somerset cruised to an easy 132 run victory over Notts five balls into the extra half hour after Notts were bowled out for 122 in 43.5 overs on a day 3 wicket taking plenty of turn. Top scorer for Notts was Ravi Ashwin who faced 104 balls for his 41, 63 more balls than any other Notts batsman who had no answer to Jack Leach 4 for 42 and the very brisk Jamie Overton 4 for 24 who filleted the very long Notts tail. Ashwin and debutant Liam Patterson-White had earlier bowled well to remove Somerset for 169. Patterson-White fully justified his somewhat belated selection. Hopefully the coaching team will be braver in their team line ups in the future and give the Notts Academy products a chance. They are young and hungry and bring much needed enthusiasm to a team who have now been hammered in 11 of the previous 16 win less outings.
Somerset made a steady start on a sunny morning. Ashwin (Somerset Pavilion End) and Wood (River End) opened the bowling. After four over burst from Wood, Patterson-White got his first bowl for Notts. Somerset were happy to push singles. In the 25th over a smart catch from Slater at short leg off Ashwin saw Abell depart for 24, 56 for two. Four overs later, Hildreth (7) charged Ashwin but the off spinner found the edge of the bat and Moores took the catch, 70 for 3. In the 30th over, Liam Patterson-White got his maiden first-class wicket having Tom Banton leg before for four, 75 for four. Bartlett fell in the slow left armers next over, being bowled for 0, 79 for five. Davies fell in the 35th over, leg before to one that kept low to Ashwin for 2, 94 for six. The two spinners had bowled excellently throughout the morning session as Somerset were 108 for 6 off 41 overs with Azhar Ali on 36 and Gregory on 9 at the interval.
With the fifth ball after lunch Gregory (9) played a poor shot to be caught by substitute Solomon Budinger at mid wicket , 109 for seven. Bess departed leg before to Patterson-White for 5, 115 for eight. Overton came in and hit Patterson-White into the River at the back of the Trescothick stand. Overton (24) added 51 for the ninth wicket with Azhar Ali before edging Ashwin to Moores, 166 for 9. Liam Patterson-White took the final wicket having Leach (0) caught by Slater at short leg, Somerset 169 all out off 59.4 overs. Ashwin 5 for 59 and Patterson-White 5 for 73. The youngster bowled superbly on his debut, hardly bowling a bad ball and looking composed despite the pressure of bowling on a turning pitch, he was well encouraged by Ashwin standing at either mid on and mid off, he has been a good signing.
Laments
What a shame Patterson-White was unfit to bowl in the first innings. Azhar Ali carried his bat for 65, a model innings in how to play on a spinning pitch, with his running between the wickets being excellent. Mr Extras second top scorer with 29 including 20 byes.
Notts went in at 1455 requiring 255 to win. Gregory gave away a no ball in the first over and with the first ball of the second over bowled by Leach (River End) Libby was palpably leg before for a golden duck. Slater had a let off on one when Slater was dropped at long leg by Leach off Gregory, the spinner getting one hand to the ball but not clinging on. Slater (2) though departed in the next over caught at the second attempt by Banton at short leg off Leach, 21 for two. Notts 31 for two off 12 overs with Moores on 18 and Ashwin on 3 at tea. But Notts stayed to timetable by losing eight wickets in the final session.
Here we go again
Moores (22) fell to the sixth ball after tea being caught at first slip by Hildreth off Overton, 35 for three. In the 27th over, Mullaney (9) was caught at leg slip by Hildreth off Bess, the ball shooting up, it was a somewhat passive innings from the skipper, 67 for 4.
Wasted fare
Patel's long journey day was hardly worth the fare as he edged a drive off Leach to Hildreth at first slip to depart for a single, 78 for 5. Ashwin(41) became the sixth wicket to fall when drove Leach low to Bartlett at mid on, 95 for 6. A six over square leg by Duckett off Bess took Notts to three figures. A dreadful shot from Duckett (13) saw him caught at wide third man by Gregory off Overton, 102 for seven. Fletcher (6) skied Bess to Groenewald at mid off, 108 for eight. Patterson-White (2) and Ball (8) were the last two to go both bowled by Overton, Notts all out at 1803 for 122.
The third day pitch was a handful to bat on and the main damage had been done after tea on days 1 and 2. Notts can take consolation of this being the narrowest defeat in 16 game winless run and can point to the illness and injury respectively to Patterson-White and Nash respectively and the losing of the crucial toss. Notts can also take heart from the performances of Libby, Wood,Ashwin, Nash and most of all Patterson-White in this game. Relegation though now seems a certainty, time to give youth a chance! MAG
Day 2
NOTTS IN A SPIN
Libby scores 77 before the self-destruct button is pressed again
Another truly awful batting collapse saw Notts surrender the initiative losing their last seven wickets for 40 at Taunton today. Notts well placed at 201 for 2, 125 runs behind Somerset, had no answer to spin twins as slow left armer Leach and off spinner Bess gobbled up the remaining Notts batsman with ease. It was so frustrating. Nash had batted well but was unfortunate to have leave the game with concussion unbeaten on 50 after two blows on the head from Overton. His concussion replacement Samit Patel could not get to the ground on time to bat Libby showed that batting was far from impossible on the turning surface lasting 192 balls for his an obdurate 77, well done to him. But after his dismissal came the familiar spineless and unacceptable collapse which has happened in virtually every championship game this season, letting down the large and increasingly irate travelling support once again. The team management are running out of excuses.
Dropped by Overton
Gregory (Somerset Pavilion End) and Jamie Overton (River End) gave the Notts openers a testing time. Libby hit Overton for three successive fours in the sixth over. In the next over Overton dropped Slater when on 7 at second slip off Gregory, an easy chance. Slater (15) then edged Overton through the slips in the next over but softened up, he then skied Overton to Abell in the covers who took the catch on the run, 35 for one. Leach (River End) and Bess (Somerset Pavilion End) were introduced for the 16th and 23rd overs respectively but Libby and Nash stood firm as Notts got to lunch on 91 for one off 30 overs with Libby on 36 and Nash on 35. Notts had won the morning session.
Twenty minutes after lunch, a two for Libby off Leach saw him to 50 off 99 balls. Next over Nash got to 50 off 90 balls with a top edged single off Gregory. Overton was bowling a vicious spell twice hitting Nash on the helmet following short pitch balls. After a long stoppage Nash retired hurt on 50 with Notts on 121 for one off 38.5 overs. Duckett came in and attacked, hitting Leach for a six over mid wicket and then reverse sweeping him for four. Bess replaced Overton from the Somerset Pavilion End and Duckett hit him for six over mid wicket.

Bess gets his revenge
Duckett (38) slashed out at Bess and edged to keeper Davies, 169 for two in the 53rd over. Notts got to tea on 189 for 2 off 64 overs with Libby on 69 and Mullaney on 9. Another session win for Notts but things unravelled spectacularly after the interval.
Self-destruction time
In the third over after tea, Libby hit a boundary through point off Bess to bring up the first batting bonus point. In the next over, Libby's fine innings came to an end when he edged Leach to Gregory at slip, 201 for three. Libby 77 off 192 balls with eight boundaries. A terrible shot from Mullaney (24) skying a long hop from Bess tamely to Abell at mid wicket, 217 for four. Moores (1) did not last long caught at short leg by Banton off Leach, 222 for 5. Patterson-White followed the same way with a debut four ball duck to his name, 226 for 6. Ashwin attempted to reverse sweep a full toss from Bess and only succeeded in being bowled for 23, 236 for 7. Wood (0) was the next to go caught at backward point off Bess, 238 for 8. Fletcher (3) was the last man to go caught at short fine leg as Notts were 241 all out. Bess 5 for 59. Leach 3 for 79. The collapse was not the worst we have seen this season, the wicket giving increasing help to the spinners,

Upsetting lack of fight
What was most upsetting was the distinct lack of fight shown by the lower order. There remains a lack of moral fibre in Notts championship batting, which makes us the laughing stock of the County circuit.
Somerset had five overs to bat. Ashwin picked up night watchman Groenewald (0) with the fifth ball of the opening over, caught behind by Moores, 1 for 1. Abell and AzharAli saw Somerset to the close on 7 for one. With the wicket deteriorating if Notts are chasing more than 150 it will be very testing target. With Somerset already leading by 92 runs, the result of this game seems a foregone conclusion.

Day 1
A frustrating day for Notts as per Tunbridge Wells; they let the home side off the hook. After having Somerset on 145 for 6 at one stage, they let them add a further 181 for the remaining four wickets as Davies and Bess added 128 runs for the seventh wicket as Somerset were bowled out for 326 with nine balls left in the day. Luke Wood (4 for 83) and Ravi Ashwin (3 for 93) both bowled well. Notts have missed Wood's enthusiasm recently and Ashwin has brought a professional approach not just with bat and ball but in the field encouraging colleagues, a very good team man. Skipper Steven Mullaney unable to bowl due to a knee injury was further handicapped with debutant all rounder Liam Patterson-White off the field nearly all day with a high temperature. Fletcher putting in his usual effort looked a tired man today and Ball served up too many four balls, particularly before lunch. Notts gave away 34 extras; too many as Moores had a poor day behind the stumps.
Somerset won the toss and elected to bat on a dry pitch likely to increasing take turn.In came debutant Liam Patterson-White, Luke Wood and Jake Libby and out went Samit Patel (dropped), Stuart Broad (ECB directive) and Joe Clarke (hamstring strain) Luke Fletcher (Somerset Pavilion) and Jake Ball (River End) opened up in very hot sunny conditions in front of a large Sunday crowd. Wood replaced Ball in the eighth over and with his first ball Azhar Ali (10) edged him to Mullaney at second slip, cue a massive celebration, 22 for one. Ashwin came on for the 11th over and in his fifth over had Abell (17) well caught one handed at short leg by Slater diving forward, 52 for two. Hildreth (44) was batting very well going fifth in all time Somerset first class run scorers and the reaching 17000 first class runs. It was a major surprise when he edged Ball to Mullaney at second slip, 96 for 3, a point before lunch for Notts. Somerset got to the interval on 111 for three off 32 overs with Banton on 16 and Bartlett on 12. An even session.
Dropped sitter
Luke Wood who had bowled an excellent 6 over spell before lunch bowling with pace and getting lift returned from the River End. He was unlucky as Moores dropped an absolute sitter when Bartlett on 17. But he got his revenge in the same over, as Bartlett (18) was bowled off his pads, 122 for four. Banton (25) was struggling against Ashwin and he was out in bizarre fashion, hitting his own wicket against the off spinner, 132 for five. A poor shot from Gregory (9) saw him smartly caught low down at mid on by Ashwin off Ball, 145 for six.
Hard work tomorrow
With the wicket offering great turn and bounce from the Somerset Pavilion End this total looks over par and Notts will have to bat very well tomorrow against the fine Somerset attack to stay in the game. MAG

Stuart Broad is back in his ECB prison cell resting ahead any potential future exertions, [correction is hob-nobbing at the tennis] and Paul Coughlin remains in recovery (due back in 2 weeks).
The Notts website doesn't mention that Samit Patel is not listed in the squad, so dances around giving a reason for his omission.
One note for next week: Ben Duckett has bagged an England Lion selection to play Australia A at Canterbury in a 4 day game, so won't be available to play Surrey. Surrey will be without Ben Foakes for a similar reason.

Slow reactions
Bess had a lucky break when on 1 when he chipped a delivery from Ball low towards Nash at mid wicket, but the former Sussex man was slow to react and he never got his hands on the ball. It proved a very expensive error as Bess (25) and Davies (28) added an unbroken 50 as Somerset got to tea on 195 for six off 64 overs.
Impotent
Davies and Bess carried on their partnership after tea with the Notts attack with the older ball looking impotent. A single for Davies off Ball brought the 100 stand in 28 overs. The new ball was taken by Ashwin and Wood with Somerset 256 for six after 80 overs. By now the body language from the Notts fielders was hangdog and very much exhibiting a "here we go again feeling". Wood though bowling the best we have seen him since Kleinveldt's match at Wantage Road in 2017 picked up a deserved third wicket when Bess (51) edged him to Mullaney at second slip, 273 for seven in the 84th over. The seventh wicket had added 128 runs in 36 overs. Luke Wood picked up his fourth wicket when Davies was leg before for 74, his was a chance less innings, 292 for eight. Wood was kept on an over or two too long. Fletcher replaced him from the River End and had Jamie Overton caught by the sole slip Duckett. Overton had hit a quickfire 34 off 35 balls, 325 for nine. The last wicket to fall was Jack Leach's who plumb leg to Ashwin for 1, Somerset 326 all out off 94.3 overs at 1810. Groenewald 9 not out.

One note for next week: Ben Duckett has bagged an England Lion selection to play Australia A at Canterbury in a 4 day game, so won't be available to play Surrey. Surrey will be without Ben Foakes for a similar reason.
The squad/team news will be interesting(or will it?) Is Broad available again? Carter in for someone or will PM/Mull finally have the guts to give a debut to LPW, probably deemed far too risky ? Better to blood him in the blast, bowl him late on if all else fails and bat him 7 or 8 and hope he's not needed(a la Sam Wood and Billy Rooooooot you could say). At least we're going to the play the Wurzells with a world class spin option for once
ReplyDeleteNotts need the Cornish Dravid back in that first team side!
ReplyDeleteInteresting, as you say, that there's no mention of Samit in the club post.
ReplyDeleteWell that explains that earthquake in California; Samit being dropped.
ReplyDeleteFrom that squad I would expect Peter to have the same (Essex) eleven but bring Carter in for Broad and Libby in for Patel. It would be nice to be pleasantly surprised differently, but I'm not holding my breath.
ReplyDeleteWell you could knock me down with a feather Trevor. Fingers crossed for LPW on his debut.
DeleteYes, I am stunned and was even more stunned until I read JC is injured, for a brief moment I though Mull&PM had reached the end of their tether.Yes good luck to LPW let's hope he can get some runs and keep his place in the side for the Surrey game. Got some stick for daring to say the jury's still out on Carter in my opinion. Getting that England Lions call up was way too early and unwarranted and as he can't really bat it's good to see him having to fight for a place in the team. Nothing against him,it's what has been sadly missing for most of them.COMPETITION FOR THEIR PLACE IN THE SIDE
DeleteIt's looking like an experienced 'keeper is needed. Can we get Riki back?
ReplyDeleteTom Moores still has a lot of learning to do.
DeleteWell done Luke Wood who surely deserves to be kept in the side for the rest of the season instead of Jake Ball as their body language are poles apart and Luke is a better batsman. I would also have played Chappell today now there is little to lose. The inability to finish sides off with the ball will no doubt cost us dearly in this game and this fault has gone on for years. Good luck tomorrow and with no Craig Overton in their side hopefully at least one batsman can go big.
ReplyDeleteI too thought yesterday was going to be Chappell's big opportunity
DeleteAn impressive start with Luke and Ravi worrying the batsmen constantly. Sadly with a bowler short we couldn't quite complete the task but overall much better. Now a real test.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great shame after the immense build up that LPW was ill yesterday. Very odd how Peter still picked him to play on the morning.
DeleteIs this the least number of wickets Notts have lost in a session this season?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, keep up he good work and 300 for 3 might be a great score at the end of the day.
Don't panic guys. C'mon Notts!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bws
Chris S
Morning session Day 4 at Edgbaston - 0 wickets
DeleteAdd that innings to the other Notts implosions 8/40 7/24 of late
ReplyDeleteThey've collapsed. Just when I thought it was safe to look at the scores!
ReplyDeleteSamit Patel will replace Chris Nash as a concussion substitute for the remainder of the game against Somerset at Taunton.
ReplyDeleteIf that's allowed how come our 12th man at taunton couldn't bat in the 1st innings? Is it time for Tom Moores to be rested in the red ball games. Who keeps wicket for the 2nds?
ReplyDeleteSam Hall for the SEC games, he hasn't played since May however. Sol Budinger keeps for the white ball games. The obvious Moores replacement would be Duckett.
DeleteThey clearly think another spinner is required with LPW under the weather. Carts is playing for Lincs.
Patel? Seriously? He should not be anywhere near that team now. He's had chance after chance and failed again and again.
ReplyDeleteand again
DeleteI know nothing of Bundinger, but he should replace Tom Moores in the next County Championship match.
ReplyDeleteWill anyone in the management team have the backbone to tell PM that in their opinion his son should be dropped?
ReplyDeleteWhat a shame as Jake Libby and Chris Nash batted superbly and Overton had to resort to bowling around the wicket short pitched stuff at the body. Not rocket science but Libby and Nash should have batted in the top three all season as they are proper four day players. No excuse for such a collapse but with such a long tail it was always likely to happen. Notts bowl too many free hits but Somerset ramped up the pressure with miserly bowling on their usual doctored wicket.
ReplyDeleteI did try to post sthg after day 1 which went along the lines of Somerset having 120 too many, my liking them as a team (Hildreth under-rated, Overton advancing his career in comparison with his erstwhile England rival Ball who has gone backwards, and Leach & Bess being good spinners). I also wondered if Duckett really was an England A (i.e. England in waiting) batsman..
ReplyDeleteFast forward 24 hours. I am searching for positives.... Great that Libby took the confidence he got from the second team into his first team performance. Was Duckett's demise predictable for a breezy 30 odd? Moores has no form and Notts no options it seems
I do agree that if LPW was ill, it is bizarre he was picked (especially if Mullaney knew he could not bowl himself). West B to Taunton is 3 hrs, so I can see how Samit could not get there in time to bat (assuming it was, say, 2-30 by the time he was summoned).
Tomorrow another day. Ashwin is still a power (albeit I think he peaked 2-3 years ago). Skittle them for 100 and lets see....(still leaves thick end of 200 to win - not much chance of that I don't think). Based on Libby's performance following Second XI T20, I am hoping that the T20 blast will blast some batters into some confidence....., or at least that we run Somerset close. I wont offer odds though of a large Somerset day 3 score, and a poor one from Notts on day 4 chasing 450+....
Sol Budinger would be a complete joke at this level. Plays kamikaze for the 2s even at their level. Notts should have drafted in an experienced keeper after Ready. We all know Moores is a good white ball hitter, average keeper and no technique(or more worryingly desire, I suspect) for red ball cricket(it's horrid, it's nasty an it's tough). Well played the Cornish Dravidian, we all know him and/or Gnasher should have been opening all season but dear old Notts bend over backwards to accommodate the failed trial of Duckett as England opener(not fair on him, Notts, us or England). Awful for LPW on his debut let's hope he gets a run to show what he can do.
ReplyDeleteWas my 360 mile round trip to support Notts at Taunton today worth it? - Yes, I enjoyed a lovely Cornish Pastie; some wonderful ice cream and the chats with the travelling Notts Supporters and the banter with some of the Somerset Supporters who cheered up a great deal after we again capitulated and handed them a useful Ist Innings lead. After the application and determination shown by Jake Libby what followed after his dismissal was as dismal as MAG's Day 2 Report above. Tom Moores seems not to be a Division 1 player and even Mullaney ought to have played better. I hope that Nash is OK after being hit on the helmet - he looked really shocked as he got into the ambulance some time later. The bottom line though is that as a Side we are 'shot' - we have no ideas and clearly whatever work the Coaches are trying to do isn't working. Do we really need a Director of Cricket? - what is he doing to imporve matters for us? An awful end to what looked like a promising first Sessions - we just threw Nash and Libby's hard work away - dreadful, inexcusable, incompetent, lack of pride and, probably worse still, lack of talent.
ReplyDeletePer discussions today amongst several of us a Motion for an EGM along the following lines?:
ReplyDelete'We, the undersigned, being Members of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club ('the Club') , hereby request that an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) be convened in according to the Rules and Constitution of the Club to discuss the following expression of concern; We instruct the Committee to address the serious under-performance of the Coaching and Playing staff and call on the Committee to take urgent and immediate steps to explain to the Members what urgent changes can be made to improve matters. We feel that the Director of Cricket; Head Coach; Bowling Coach and Fitness Coach should all be set clear targets (this Season and next) of what is required and that failure to achieve those targets will result in disciplinary action by the Committee of the Club.'
It's not easy watching is it? Notts whilst batting, even at 200 odd for 2, you know deep down that Notts are on a knife's edge, one wicket away from a collapse.
ReplyDeleteCrystal ball time ............
ReplyDeleteIts lunch on Day 3 and Notts have performed a miracle and got some quick Somerset wickets . Mesmerising bowling from Ashwin and good support from Patterson-White. He must be feeling better in more ways than one .
Am staring into my crystal ball and see Notts wrapping up the Somerset innings about half an hour before tea and they will have a lead of a very tricky 260.
So Notts go into bat and quietly polish the runs off for the loss of only 5 wickets and get the badly needed points which will give them some hope to stave off relegation .
The question is this . Nash was unable to complete his innings owing to concussion and Samit was urgently summoned to make his way to Taunton ASAP . But he arrived to late to bat . But what if he had arrived in time and got a gritty 50 or so /
The result of the game and Notts fate could easily be decided by a bit of bad luck .
Yeah of course we've not won for a year.........but it's all down to bad luck
DeleteAgree. It’ll be fine margins this game. From the stats LPW has kept up with Ashwin. The irony with Patel is quite stark I think. As a brought in sub he could win us the game, but LPWs performance so far could cost Patel his place for the foreseeable.
ReplyDeleteGood that, with Somerset 8 down as I write this, we might still be in with a chance.
Here we go again. 95 for 6. Will we even survive today?
ReplyDelete"Fine margins"!!!??? - This is Notts - no backbone, very little talent and even less brains. Samit's jaunt to Taunton was a waste of time and money - extremely serious actions now must be taken - and I have no doubt that the Director of Cricket must be instantly dismissed (or the Post deleted) and Andy Pick the Bowling Coach also needs to go. I personally favour promoting Paul Franks to Head Coach for the remainder of the Season and freeing Peter Moores to have a more global oversight of the 1st & 2nd Teams and to produce a Strategy for the future development of our own players - including 'resurrecting' the Academy and getting them into a proper League, as used to be the case. I look forward to reading MAG's Day 3 Report.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that Newell and Moores should be dismissed.
DeleteIt is evident, that the club lack someone who can identify talent in a cricketer. A decent coach /manager would not have allowed both Hutton and Milnes to leave for pastures new.
Pick's contribution to the cause, has been non existent, when you look at Chappel, Ball, Blatherwick etc. As for Franks, well he is not everyones cup of tea either.
No , the club need a clean sweep, and could do a lot worse than appoint Steven Rhodes, who has a proven track record of spotting talented cricketers, and developing their skill sets.
HE is now available having departed his post with Bangladesh.
I think it would also be beneficial to have someone in charge who has no previous association with the club, unless you could tempt Steven Flemimg who is a thoughtful intelligent guy.
NO, the committee have to grow some sphericals, and do the right thing for the members, instead of procrastinating on decisions that should have already been made.
Spot on there, was thinking the same myself when Bangladesh announced his departure yesterday. Steven Rhodes is an excellent coach and Worcestershire really shot themselves in the foot when they fired him.
DeleteYes Musstapha, the batting line up gave me more laughs than watching repeats of Fawlty Towers. Priceless, whoever was responsible for that should fall on on their sword tonight. Can't wait for the lame excuses, unlucky with Nash, we've got a young side......etc, etc. We won't do it, but I would bring in a new captain to oversee the club for the next 5 years, a Collingwood, Fleming, Benkenstein type of figure, ideally from outside not close to the cosy, cosseted , environment we have down there.
DeleteI think by "fine margins" I probably meant those little things which go against you and which could have/should have gone for you. Samit not being able to get to Taunton (indeed Nash having to retire), the 1st innings recovery from Somerset, the Azhar/Overton stand in the second innings. It was a close game for a while and those slip ups/lack of luck could and did cost Notts.
DeleteI don't think Pick has really helped the bowlers. Ball is nowhere near the force he was, I would be surprised if Broad plays more than 2 Ashes tests, Samit's bowling was never that effective, we let Milnes and Hutton go etc etc. On the plus side, Fletcher has come on and Luke Wood might still make it
Totally agreed by me Mr Measures but then I don't matter much.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mustafa P, both Newell and Moores should be told to go now. Paul Franks be put in charge for the rest of the season and both a batting coach and new bowling coach be obtained from somewhere. Longer term is it possible to persuade Chris Read to return to the club in a position of cricket supremo or if not someone like Steven Fleming or Paul Collingwood be approached.
ReplyDeleteThere is too much dead wood in the team from Slater through to Patel, Moores Jnr. and Ball.
It is the second division from here where hopefully the rebuild can start.
Agreed. Both Newell and Moores must go.
DeleteLetting them off the hook on the first day inevitably led to this heavy defeat but the batting is so abject we would not have chased 100 as few of them can take any sort of pressure. Look at Warwickshire today who are weaker on paper than us battling manfully to rescue an unlikely draw at Hampshire. Hats off to LPW for his great bowling performance and he should have had Azhar Ali out in his second over when he looked plumb in front. We are certainly not getting the rub of the green with LBW decisions this season. The byes count against Tom Moores was laughable and even if he does sign a red ball contract next season he must be replaced. Ben Slater also needs a rest as does Jake Ball. LPW and Chappell should play for the rest of the season to prepare for next years second division campaign. Somerset will win the league but they are getting away with murder preparing spinning tops.
ReplyDeleteI think that your Day 3 Report was too kind MAG - Libby failed in the 2nd Innings as did most of the Bowlers when compared with Somerset. Now that Relegation is virtually confirmed it is time to make crystal clear to many from the top downwards that they won't be with Notts next Season unless there is a dramtic improvement in their 4-day Game performances by the end of the Season. Success in the T20 is not any measure of the best cricketers - it is a completely different format where Big Hitters will always seek to make a name in order to be picked up around the world by the many other T20 Competitions and make their quick fortunes - Like Hales etc.
ReplyDeleteOn a slightly irreverent note what about a post on fans personal worst Notts sides down the years.Been Watching Notts since late 70s, my all time worst was the Archer, Gie, Noon, Oram, Bowan outfit from the late 80s/early 90s. Have it on good authority that ACs side in the 60s was the worst of all time. Anyone any thoughts? MAG/JAG/OTHER FANS OUT THERE?
DeleteOr / and 'The best Team of Notts ex-players' - Matt Milnes; Billy Root; Brett Hutton; Graham White; Ricki Wessells; Chris Read; ...
DeleteI think the current batch of flopping failures are being offered more chances to come good and are receiving a greater latitude of what constitutes succeeding, than that given some players in Mick Newell's back-catalogue of "poor signings". Perhaps it is because the expectation from these guys in so much higher and the need to save face (on Moores' and Newell's part) is so much greater too.
DeleteSorry to keep Posting BUT we need to be clear that Mick Newell's role is not to do primarily with ON THE FIELD issues but is a far more strategic / developmental one with, if you like, a more 'global' overview and is in line with similar roles in other Clubs (and, somewhat like Football also)- so the PLAYING ISSUES are the responsibility of Peter Moores and the team of Coaches under him, Andy Pick; Paul Franks; Ant Botha etc - covering First Team down to the juniors. The role of the COMMITTEE who WE THE MEMBERS appoint is the day-to-day over sight of the management of OUR club - the various members of the Committeee have varying responsibilities but they too have to ensure that legal / employment law matters are strictly adhered to. So, within that brief overview I have to be clear that as Members our influence is necessarily extremely limited - often to our personal and even minority opinions. I am one of those who is more vocal, I love cricket and I love Notts and I retain an old fashioned and perhaps 'rose-tinted' spectacled view of what it WAS like and what it OUGHT to be like - to me cricket as a sport is special, it ought to be, above all, about fairness; respect; honesty; good sportsmanship and comaraderie - so those few Members who travel over the country supporting Notts deserve special thanks form the Club - and perhaps some more open recognition and reward - a free meal in '6' perhaps!!! At Notts we are less partisan than the supporters of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Somerst, for example, as we recognise and appreciate good play(ers) in whatever Sides and some of the knowledge of the Members is astounding. So, that's my calmer and more considered view BUT I am also passionate to see Notts do well and despair at what is currently happening and remain mystified as to WHY - if we have the talent within the playing squad what is preventing them performing? If we have the best Coaches available why can't they get better results from the players? The level of demonstrated fitness does not seem good either, we used to be a far more alert and professional fielding Side - is fitness a problem in some of the Side? It is far too easy, I guess, to scapegoat Mick Newell - and I hold my hands up to one of those who has been over-critical but I guess when things go wrong you always look to the top - and playing-wise he sits at the top. Commercially we are extremely successful thanks to International Matches especially - the 4-day game is a financial loss-sustaining venture but underpins all that is essential in County cricket and must continue to have the greatest support nationally and internationally. So despite the current despair let's 'keep the faith' and yes, pressure the Committee and those appointed to deliver results and make clear that we don't accept what is currently happening and continue to demand reasons and expect significant changes if improvements are not very soon apparent - it is OUR CLUB and we won't lie down and accept defeat. As Diana Peasey our new Committee Members says "Come on Notts."
ReplyDeleteRumour has it that there's to be some sort of Committee meeting on Monday! The pressure is on them to act.
