Jackie Bond RIP and Memories of the Special Meeting of 1974

The sad passing of Jack Bond brought back memories of the 1974 and in particular the calling of a special meeting of members on 27th June 1974 to discuss the "abysmal playing record" of the club. The meeting was called at the request of 39 members on 27th May 1974 after Notts lost a championship game to Hampshire by innings and 101 runs at TB (their eighth defeat in 10 matches), no forums in those days!

Below is how the Evening Post reported the evening and how Jack defended his team!

In the intervening 45 years, no members have asked for a similar meeting to be set up.....  MAG

Former Lancashire captain Jack Bond has died at the age of 87.
Bond skippered a highly successful Red Rose side, which included West Indies batsman Clive Lloyd and India's Farokh Engineer, from 1968 to 1972.
He led them to five limited-overs trophies, including three successive Gillette Cup wins at Lord's.
Bond had a brief spell with Nottinghamshire in 1974, and later as an England selector, before returning to Lancashire as manager in 1980.
He played 461 games in all competitions during his career, scoring more than 12,000 first-class runs.
Former chief executive Jim Cumbes told BBC Radio Lancashire: "He was just such a wonderful handler of people, and I think that's why he had so much success as a captain.
"Although he had good players, there were some feisty characters among them, and some great individuals, and he managed to mould them into a team that could win things.
"I think the biggest disappointment for him was not actually winning the Championship, but two or three times they were very close and it was the weather that did for them, as it very often used to do at Old Trafford."

  1. It was Jack Bond that recommended Clive Rice to Notts. Rice arrived the season after, the rest as the say is history!

  2. RICE AND HADLEE !
    Golden days .
Visiting sides practically bowled out before lunch on the first day .
Ron Allsop knew how to prepare a wicket for them .
A pleasure to see the pair bowl sides out and within no time at all we saw their wonderful batting .
Wonderful straight drives from Clive and momentous ,powerful hitting from Hadlee whilst wearing that adapted white motor cycle helmet .
Jack Bond did Notts a favour with his recommendation . But I seem to think his brief time with Notts was not a very happy one ?

  3. You see, the excuses don't change!!! WE are currently in a 'transitional period' plus carrying injuries and the Head Coach assures us that HE is responsible for on-the-field matters. Also that on-going Appraisals do take place. Most of us want to believe that our current plight is an unfortunate combination of factors - the loss of a number of previously experienced players; the 'bedding in' of new and less experienced players; the unfortunate effects of some 'bad behaviour' and the injury list. Let's hope that the 'warning shots' fired acrosss the 'bows' of the Club will have their effect and that we won't need to call an EGM as we have no wish to cause the Club unnecessary expenditure but simply want / need to see evidence of some positive changes / improvements. Today against Surrey has given at least a glimmer of hope with Liam Patterson-White especially again bowling excellently under the mentoring of Ashwin. Tomorrow will be the test to see if we can at least equal their score and hopefully surpass it. "Come on Notts."

  4. For the benefit of the Committee, who we understand are meeting tomorrow, I hope that I am stating the position of the 'EGM Group' accurately when I say that we expect to be advised of some positive progress and not to see anyone scapegoated unfairly because that too may trigger an EGM.

We take the view that no-one who is salaried ought to be 'untouchable' and that Contracts contain clear expectations relating to performance of duties - and that there is clear evidence available to the Committe of those Appraisals. We particularly place a high degree of responsibility on Darren Bicknell - has he attended sufficient Matches in person to assess whether the cricketing side of the Club (as opposed to the Commercial side) is performing adequately?

We all share the concerns that this looks like another Match we are going to lose and that there is now an apparent 'mind set' which sees defeat as par for the course. 'Presiding' over it all is, of course, the Director of Cricket - so what is in his Contract / Job Description relating to delivering agreed Aims and Objectives? Who or what does he attribute our current plight to? Was he there at Trent Bridge today or enjoying the England Match?

The situation is dire - is it lack of player talent - and if so, who was responsible for signing the players? is it a lack of adequate Coaching - and if so, who was responsible for signing the Coaches? Is there a lack of cohesion amongst the players - around perhaps issues of pay rates / younger v older players, are there discipline issues - and if so what is being done to resolve these and by whom?

Perhaps after so many years there need to be 'new messages' by 'new staff' - some additional motivational input seems desperately needed.

So we are looking to the Committee to act decisively because if an EGM Motion, if passed, expressing a lack of confidence in the Committee we would expect to lead to the whole Committee resigning and new elections taking place.

Time is not on your hands, Committee members.
