It was good to see Notts win both Matches convincingly today - although I think I may have been the only 'independent' Notts supporter there. Budinger sustained a nasty injury in the second Match so I hope that he is OK. Super to see Coughlin play in the first Match - we need him back a.s.a.p. but he still doesn't look 100%. Our fielding still needs working on - but Worcestershire's was no better!
ReplyDeleteThe highlight batting-wise was the 77 not out in the first Match by Slater followed by 30 in the second with knocks of 25 and 28 by James; 33 by Budinger in the first match and bowling-wise Chappell's 3 for 21 in the first Match and Carter's 3 for 25.

ReplyDeleteBen Slater and Matt Carter starred in back-to-back wins for the Seconds against Worcestershire, extending the side’s run to five consecutive victories.
In the first match, Slater and Sol Budinger got the side off to a flier, adding 69 in the first 7.3 overs before the latter fell for a 25-ball 33.
Slater continued to flay the Worcestershire bowlers to all parts, reaching his fifty off 33 deliveries and finding ample support from Lyndon James (25 off 17) and Liam Patterson-White (17* off 9) as the scored rocketed past 50.
The left-hander carried his bat through the entire innings, ending on an unbeaten 77 from 53 balls including five fours and three maximums as the Outlaws posted 175-6.
In reply, Worcestershire were under pressure from the very first delivery as Paul Coughlin, returning from a hamstring injury he sustained against the same opposition in May, removed Ollie Westbury.
Carter (3-25) and Zak Chappell (3-21) then each bagged two early victims to reduce Worcestershire to 21-5 and leave their chase in tatters.
Tom Fell (54) and Jacques Banton (46) kept the hosts in with a chance before falling to James and Patterson-White respectively.
Coughlin (2-22), Carter and Chappell added a further wicket to each of their tallies as the Rapids were bowled out for 148, handing Notts a 27-run victory.
In game two, the hosts had the opportunity to bat first with County Championship captain Joe Leach (22) and Alex Milton swiftly adding 30 in three overs before the latter fell to Carter for 17.
That dismissal marked Carter’s tenth in seven days for the seconds, in addition to his 1-26 in the Outlaws’ victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks on Wednesday night.
Each of the Rapids’ top six made positive contributions in a total of 162-5, with George Rhodes giving the innings late impetus by smashing an unbeaten 43 from just 31 deliveries.
Wickets for the Outlaws were shared between Carter, Gibson, Patterson-White and Jack Blatherwick who, with 2-30, became the fourth separate Notts bowler of the day to take more than two wickets.
Chris Gibson made a quickfire start to the chase with 31 from 22 balls, Slater backing up his performance in the first match with a further impressive knock of 30 from just 16 deliveries.
Rhodes accounted for both openers as well as Budinger on his way to figures of 3-30 but further cameos from James (28), Chappell (20*) and Carter (15*) eased the Outlaws to victory by five wickets and 2.2 overs to spare.

ReplyDeleteSlater, Patterson-White and Coughlin were the stars but then Notts lost 7 wickets for just 12 runs against Worcester Second's at Lady Bay on Day 2 yesterday. It was encouraging to see Patterson-White play a responsible Innings and delightful to winess Coughlin really enjoying hitting out - although he rode his luck. I still think that Notts will win and wonder IF Coughlin may play in the T20 tonight - if his improvement continues then he is going to be a real boost for Notts.

ReplyDeleteHaving reached Finals Day will the 2nds. play a TRULY 2nd 11 Squad or try to go for victory at all costs? I remember Paul Johnson some Seasons ago sticking to his principles and not packing the Squad with 1st 11 players. Honesty and integrity would dictate that those players who have got us to Finals Day are the ones who will play in the semi-Final and, hopefully, Final.
