The Second Members' Forum 2019

Members Forum Held in Derek Randall Suite – Tuesday 17 September 2019

Top Table

Lisa Pursehouse (LP), Mick Newell (MN), Peter Moores (PM) and Richard Tennant (RT)

In front of an audience that was standing room only, a number of questions were asked, the master of ceremonies being Colin Hazelden (CH).

The first question gave praise to the Nottsview website and then asked why there was such poor communication from the committee especially due to the dire season the club had experienced. RT defended the stance of silence made by the committee stating that it is difficult to comment on individual players and contracts, or to report on decisions made at committee meetings. The committee had been very thorough this year; MN had attended all meetings and then had had three or more meetings with PM. The committee know the importance of red ball cricket, and there had been more discussions about cricketing matters at committee this year than in previous years.

The next question was around the proposed amount of cricket to be held at Trent Bridge in 2020. MN stated that all seven County Championship matches and all seven T20 blast matches will be at Trent Bridge, as will the four games in the Hundred, but some of the 50 over cricket will be away from Trent Bridge.

The next question was a complaint about the scheduling of championship matches in early and late season at Trent Bridge. MN stated that in 2020 there would be seven championship matches before the end of May, and there would be three matches in September. The other four matches would be scheduled to be in June and early July mixed in with T20 matches.

The next question related to the club policy of heavily recruiting new players from other counties. This has caused a perceived lack of team spirit in the dressing room. The questioner suggested that given how poor the performances were and because we are now going to be playing second division cricket would the club now use the model employed by Somerset and Essex and give local talent a go and who have excellent team togetherness, and stop recruiting from outside.

PM stated that he understood the pain, he was hurting, the players were hurting and that we had not been good enough this season. He has been in the game thirty seven years and loves red ball cricket. He stated that in the last twenty four months the club had lost fourteen players, including six internationals. Brendon Taylor was a big loss in the dressing room, when James Taylor had to retire he was a big loss, Chris Read retiring was a big loss, Michael Lumb retiring was a big loss but not quite as much as the others mentioned Alex Hales going White ball only was a big loss, Harry Gurney going white ball only was a big loss. The club had signed eight players a lot of them from the second division, and they are not as good as the players they had replaced yet. They are bothered and do care. The top division of the championship is a tough division, and the club are starting to develop new players but it will take time. Did the club want Luke Wood to go, No it is hurtful to the club that he is leaving but it was his choice to leave. The club have to replace talent – Somerset are a great team and they are tough team to play and have a number of players who are in their late twenties. PM then stated that Notts are a good white ball team, and that if players do not play well then they will be replaced. It can and may take time to get a tighter group of players; they do not become good overnight. He had coached Matt Prior from the age of twelve and it took time to get to the level he developed.

The next question was will Peter Moores be around after this year for the next two years?

PM said “Yes” he will very likely be here and at the moment it is a tough place to be when the team are struggling.

The next question was a repeat from previous forums around cold days at Trent Bridge and lack of places to go.

LP stated that the club may make the Derek Randall Suite available when the fixtures are announced subject to it not being booked for other events e.g. Weddings. They will also make tea and coffee. For catering the club cannot compete with shops but did admit that the club could do better on County Championship days and she asked members to send suggestions for improvement into the club.

The next question was from a member who does not attend T20 matches because it is too loud (CH asked whether it referred to him) and that the club should create Red Ball only season tickets for next year especially as that form of cricket will now be a lower standard next year. LP did not agree stating that you become a member of the club and therefore should be given the opportunity to watch all forms of the game. She then said that 3,500 members watch the Blast. All members must be part of the club, and Notts are amongst the top two cheapest for membership prices across the county circuit.

The next question was would the club consider reducing the age of a pensioner membership to 60 rather than 66 as it might attract new members who had retired at age 60.

LP replied NO, the pension age is actually rising to 67. She and other people would have to work longer before retirement.

The next question asked whether there was an update on plans to renovate the pavilion at Trent Bridge?

RT said that this had been discussed at a meeting last week, and that they had been waiting news from the ECB for requirements for retaining Test Match Status. The next move was to go to the Architects, but the problem is finding the finance for any scheme. There were dangers of becoming a business rather than a county club. We are not Surrey, and it will be very difficult to raise finance.

The next question was why do we play so much cricket in early April?

PM said that it depends on the weather, but it is because of the need to play the different competitions in blocks, and that the fixture scheduling is very difficult.

The next question was why is the Hundred not included in the membership when some counties are including it?

LP said there were no plans to include it in the membership although the pavilion will still be reserved for Nottinghamshire members, and Nottinghamshire members will also have a priority booking period to purchase tickets. The Hundred will be played alongside the 50 over competition and so will not demean the championship, although the final schedule is not sorted yet. Players playing away in the Hundred would be back for the semi finals and final. Dates to note are 3rd October which is the big launch day for the Hundred, and the 20th October for the player draft.

The coaches for the Trent Rockets will be Stephen Fleming for the men. Salliann Briggs will coach the women and she has coached in Hobart and also the Loughborough Lightning.

The main coaches will work with the support coaches who will be from Derbyshire and Leicestershire as well as Nottinghamshire.

The club will be sending out an email to members re the Hundred.

The next question was will Imad Wasim be playing in the Finals Day? PM stated it is possible that he will not be able to play, but if not, Nottinghamshire will still have a strong squad to pick from. Nottinghamshire do well in the 20/20 because they can bring in more experienced players who do not play in red ball like Dan Christian, Imad Wasim, Alex Hales and Harry Gurney. Members need to be aware of how committed Imad Wasim is to the club. He was so disappointed after the defeat to Durham, that he was in every day doing extra batting practice in advance of the quarter final with Middlesex, as you know he was not required to bat in that match. 1. Rumours that need to be addressed at the forum:

Is Tom Moores going to Old Trafford with Luke Wood?

Has Joe Clarke activated a relegation escape clause in his contract?

Does Ben Duckett have a similar escape clause?

Stuff the contractual confidentiality... supporters need to know if you're trying to flog memberships for next season already on the back of a young exciting squad, as trentbridge.co.uk would call it.

    1. Forget the players escape clauses; have Notts got one to jettison over paid, underperforming wannabes in the event of relegation?

    2. Yes, I would shed no tears if the 2 you mention leave. Yes we may sign a or 2 players, but we really need to build a team. I would love Ravi to come back, and I would appoint Fletch as vice captain, sort of seargent major

      Delete
    3. What about Samit, is he going to warwickshire?

    4. I wouldn't mind seeing the back of Duckett, Clarke & T Moores. None of them have shown fighting spirit or application. We need to rebuild with a good group of youngsters.

  2. Meal Deal Mick or the DoC to avoid any confusion was on Radio Football(sorry, Nottingham) last night between 6pm and 7pm on the weekly The Terrace programme. He comes on about half way through the hour if anyone wants to listen on the iPlayer/catch up. Wouldn't be drawn on PMs position until after finals day(understandably) but did confirm a couple of players are likely to be brought in. This is essential as the squad is now far too weak upon losing Seabiscuit to Lanky apart from any other departures that may happen, if the TB rumours are true. Mentioned integrating young Academy players/players from the stiffs and mentioned LPW and that was it(obviously as there just isn't anyone else remotely ready for team selection). As is Mick's style refused to put the blame on anyone but you could tell he feels firmly let down by the players which is absolutely right. Thought Mullaney gave a typical honest interview to Pravda(Notts Twitter) but looked completely washed out with no ideas whatsoever apart from juggling the batting order each game which is almost becoming hilarious. The Capitanos job apart from the tactical side which they all know as senior pros is simply to get the best out of the players. Sadly, Mull appears unable to do this in my opinion in red ball cricket. In his defence he has been dealt a few rough cards, but on the basis we can't appear to change owt else at the club I would make a change of captain for next season. Short term Gnasher. If not bing someone else in with experience. A sort of Paul Collingwood, Dale Benkenstein type of character if we could attract one to the club. You only have to look at how DC captains the t20 side, albeit he has better players at his disposal you could possibly argue.

    1. For many players, not just at Notts; the big thing this season was getting into the spotlight with performances in the Blast to get a payday for next year with the Hundred October Draft. For those that don't moonlight in other leagues around the world, this could be their career defining big-earner(or lead to subsequent earnings). Clarke must be worried; already tainted by the earlier court case which will have removed his star billing and England prospects (short term), he now finds himself elbowed out of the side at the climax of the Blast. In Outlaws side he remains a small fish in a big pond where once he was a bigger fish in a smaller pond before his move this year. Little wonder he is a bit miffed.

    2. Yes, that's a very good point you make Dixon Gates. BIG Fletch spoke along those lines at a crcket lovers night. Players are looking at the hundred in a completely different way to us Notts members.

  3. Yesterday spoke to a loyal Notts member of many years, who for the first time is considering becoming a Leicestershire member and using the reciprocal arrangement. I assume, therefore, their membership is cheaper than Notts for next season otherwise there would be no point in this ? His reasons for this are he has NIL interest in the 100 nightmare, does not want to watch the downgraded 50over stuff played at outgrounds and like a lot us doesn't drive so relies entirely on public transport which is chronic on a Sunday, due to family commitments cannot get down to that many of the Blast20 fixture in the evening as so few are played on a sat/sun in the afternoons for whatever reason. But what an APPALLING state of affairs when loyal members of many years are considering buying a membership elsewhere or in other cases just buying a white ball season ticket as many are still working full time and just cannot get to the games anymore(last two red ball games@TB are both midweek with 1030 starts a bonus). Would someone with more bottle than me like to raise this to Princess Pursestrings on Tuesday and then listen to her completely dismiss it out of hand as per usual.

    1. Just had a look. Similar prices to Notts - but you get coffee and pastries on day 1 of each home match! Notts does offer value for money in my limited experience/internet searches for membership - I think the 100 will be a separate matter entirely which is probably no bad thing!

Onto the other points/rumours raised. If Clarke and Duckett do have relegation clauses (I would be surprised) - good luck to them. Since the first couple of games they have been appalling and, I suspect, are 2 of the higher paid players in the championship. Moores to Lancs? - no huge loss but a shame he hasn't progressed in red ball.

I'd be surprised if any of them is anywhere other than Notts next season though.

A couple of experienced players in? Wonder who they might be. We have Samit, Mull, Fletch, Nash and Ball.

The scheduling has been appalling this year but I think that's more the ECBs fault than Notts. The CWC probably didn't help either.

Promising noises from MN about integrating the academy and seconds.

Just seen squad for Warwicks match. 3 new uns in - not all guaranteed to play of course but I would be surprised if Blatherwick didn't come in for Ball. I don't think Zak will play; suspect Evison and Compton will play instead of...…...Duckett and Slater maybe? Lets see. Weather forecast is good, luckily

    2. Very good post JimG. Yes, I realise it's the ECBs instigating, but CEOs like Mrs Newell(sorry, I mean Pursestrings) can pass on members views to the games hierarchy. Yes, I hope we're brave and play Blatherwick and one of either Compton or Joey Evison as watched them all year down at the palatial Bay playing for the stiffs.

  4. I wonder what the Members Forum will bring tomorrow - several of us suspect that the 'top table' will have some 'rabbit' to pull out of the 'hat' such as an announcement by the Chairman of some changes in personnel for next season. The bottom line is that we have had a disastrous Season with most of the First Team players underperforming - the futures of Jake Libby; Jake Ball; Samit Patel must be in some doubt. Joe clarke's performance today has shown just what he is capable of and it was good to see Steven Mullaney also play so well.

The Director of Cricket and the Coaching staff have a lot of questions to answer though - what has gone so terribly wrong? Memebrs require some solid assurances that we won't have another Season as bad as this - I feel that the Director of Cricket ; Head Coach and Bowling Coach all need to have made clear to them that unless we gain Promotion next Season then they will be dismissed on the grounds of poor performance.

Today's good performance and reaching Finals Day in the T20 do not compensate for relegation from the County Championship.

    1. Yes, spot on with that summation Sir Philip, t20 finals day should NOT put a club Twitter spin on the season being a success. It's been a DISASTER in real cricket terms with constant red ball thrashings and capitulations

      Delete
    2. Surely nobody is so naive as to try and inform a bunch of well-versed members that the season is a success due to t20.......I hope I am right.

I’d be similarly surprised if the rabbit came out of the hat with regards to a new coaching structure or playing staff member. It just feels too early - still this match, finals day and another to go.

If I had to bet, I would say it would simply be statements of commitment, a plan to have a plan for next year etc etc.

My wife’s birthday so I’m not there today, and abroad tomorrow so will keep an eye out for much anticipated feedback.

  5. The margins of defeat are most alarming and defeats have been relentless in their frequency. The poor performances go beyond a simple matter of player form and points to more in-grained issues which need urgent, drastic attention close season.

    ReplyDelete
  6. All rumours are apparently false. So how do we see Samit Patel fitting into the new scheme of things? Yes we have Ashwin ATM so next season, LPW and Samit in tandem, possibly. Tom Moores white ball only??? if he's staying - that's a different rumour. Fresh starts for Duckett and Clarke for Notts in Div 2.

  7. I have a couple of spare tickets available, if anyone missed out.

  8. If you want to bring changes through the committee then you must stand for the committee. You will need to get an application form from Lynda Miles via the office who will explain the deadline and the procedure. It is a straight forward form which asks for your academic background, Business or Administrative posts held in the five years following retirement. There are sections to fill in about cricket and services in the public arena. They need the date you became a member and a paragraph of comments in support of application.

It is up to you to make the form work for you.

    The choice is yours.

    2. Firstly, a comment after the Governance meeting from someone who OUGHT to be on the Committee and who has done a great deal for Notts - "I don't feel worthy" "I'm not a businessman" and has not been on the Boards of Rolls Royce etc. and isn't an Accountant. The 'message' seemed loud and clear - Millionaire businessmen and high financiers only please.

Proof? Let's look at Middlesex who have gone down this new ECB-induced Governance Route - Women? - just the one. Black and ethnic Minority representation? - NONE. Accountancy / Finance? 4. Lord? 1. OBE? 2 - Expanding 'diversity'? - who is kidding who?

Hearing 1 Committee Member regale us with his CV made some of us feel very insignificant - and, yes, 'unworthy' to aspire to such high office - what would we possibly have to offer? Some of us wouldn't even need a parking space!!!

So, whilst Nomination may seem straightforward it isn't - the Nomination Form clearly indicates what 'qualities' - or rather professional attainments - are required. It is nothing but exclusive / selective and I would say discriminatory. And then, you will need to be interviewed by The Chairman and if successful need to agree to the Committee's own SECRET CODE OF CONDUCT.

Having said all of the above, I would encourage others to stand and not be ashamed of your lack of professional stature / high business achievements / influential connections etc. IF you care passionately about Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club - and I don't say that our Committee don't care but we know that not all are regular attendees at Matches at either 1st 11 or especially 2nd 11 levels and even less at Away Matches.

So 'unknown' thank you for that reminder - but what if potential applicants don't have 'services in the public areana' or have held 'Business or Administrative Posts' in the 5 years following retirement? Does this sound right under Equal Opportunities legislation?

Am I bitter - you bet!!!

  9. Now on to today's Members Forum - I didn't take notes so either the Notts official website or someone who did take notes may provide a better and more accurate reflection.

Peter Moores gave an impassioned speech - he is CORRECT that we have lost experienced players from the 1st Team such as Chris Read; Brendan Taylor; Michael Lumb; Harry Gurney, Alex Hales and
James Taylor and need to re-build. I HOPE that he is correct that in say some 3 years time we will have a 'new' cohesive and more experienced Side. I have NO DOUBTS that the newer / younger players and working hard to succeed and, yes, may need to make some mistakes to emerge the stronger from them.

Is Peter Moores going to stay? - Well, HE would like to BUT there was no confirmation that he will be offered a new Contract.

Can the Randall Suite be made availble as we look forward to watching in the cold months of April and May next Season? PROBABLY - it is being worked on.

Can the range of refreshments available be improved / expanded? YES, it is being worked on.

Can we have just a 'red ball' Membership? NO, there is an important difference between being a Member and being a 'Season Ticket' holder - Membership is about being part of the Club; caring about it; influencing its development.

What Matches and when will be played at Trent bridge in 2020? Lisa Pursehouse, our CEO, gave perhaps a more encouraging response then I anticipated. It seems that there will be a better 'spread' of domestic Matches but we await details of exactly where the 100-ball Matches will fit in. I am sure that once fuller details emerge Members will probably have a lot more to say!

So, 1st 11-wise - a work in progress with patience being needed. We are where we 'deserve' to be in Division 2 next Season but the hope has to be that we won't be there for long and the young talent that we have seen over the past 2 days will prosper and develop and like the phoenix we will rise from the 'ashes' of a disappointing past 2-3 Seasons and again be a real florce to be reckoned with.

Were the Members satisfied? Well they seemed to be. Noticeably less 'aggro' than at the last similar meeting - either because they have been ground down with disappointment and despair or because they really do believe that the Club has a viable strategy in place. I very much hope that it is the latter.

    1. Phillip. Great memory to record this. Thank you.
I read the criteria above for committee. At the risk of immodesty, I have the academics (agree that it is an irresolute there we are) abs I think the cv. So no worries on that score and I’ll go ahead. Although I’m not retired (which as I am sure they know is age discrimination if the suggestion is that you need to be)
      So I’ll be in touch.

  10. I thought Peter spoke very well about the challenges of developing a team spirit.

But any organisation will experience staff turnover, and the best will have a succession plan to help mitigate the effects of losing key personnel.

Most succession plans will have a mix internal development, retention and external recruitment at there core. Surely the more an organisation can develop and retain its own personnel the tighter the team will be. The loss of Hutton, Milnes and Wood is a failure in our retention policy. Relying consistently on recruitment is a sticking plaster, and is far more problematic that it will lead to the success we all crave.

  11. You are absolutely correct 'anonymous' BUT as I understand that Luke Wood had a better offer financially from Lancashire Notts also need to try to keep their financial outlay as low as possible given that there are huge Ground redevelopment needs also. We are not the richest Club and we want Players and staff who really WANT to be part of Notts and are committed to our future.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Woody's choice as I understand it was a same again, payfreeze or a 50% increase offer from Lanky.

      Delete
    2. But I would guess 50% from a low base figure in absolute terms I would wonder what that equates to. For the decision to make sense for Notts, the gap between present cost of Wood plus 50% has to be more than the cost of his replacement- which surely we need.

Change is no bad thing but for a player who has played a lot this season, I’d have thought the above equation makes complete sense.

I’m operating on assumption not fact, but he has moved for a reason - (Not only money oriented I fully accept).

      Delete
    3. Luke Wood always appeared to be the first to miss out or to be shoved out on loan. They gave him the impression he was lower in the pecking order than he actually warranted.

  12. A very disappointing forum in my opinion, a view shared by other members that I know considering this is the worst performing Nottinghamshire team, results wise in first class cricket in the last 50 years.

Whilst there were lots of excuses for the performances this season, there was no substance on what changes will be made to avoid the same situation next year. The poor run of results have not been confined to 2019 but also occurred towards the second half of 2018 and in September pasts throughout the Newell era.

Whilst yes we have lost a lot of experience, a number of players brought in have international experience either at Test / ODI level or with England Lions. Compare that with our current opposition of Warwickshire, whose season has been rocked by major injuries resulting in players being brought in on loan from Division 2 counties or from their academy. Their youngsters such as Rob Yates, Henry Brookes, Matthew Lamb etc. have all made impacts contributing them to avoiding relegation with two games to spare.

No one apart from perhaps the cricketing press were suggesting that we should be finishing in the top three of the county championship, most members would have been happy with ensuring Division One safety but the scale of the defeats and how far we are away from the teams directly above us is unacceptable.

Other non-cricketing items discussed included looking again at the redevelopment of the pavilion following the publishing of the ECB's latest requirements for international venues as well as a question around Trent Bridge PLC that the Chief Executive failed to fully understand. Try to buy any Nottinghamshire CCC branded merchandise from the club shop and you will see the problem - everything including the website is branded as Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire CCC seems to be just one small part of a wider "Trent Bridge" business.

    1. So what is the difference - 'Lords' 'The Oval' 'Edgbaston' etc. Let's concentrate on what really matters and that is 2-fold - success on the 'field' and financial sustainability. Our CEO Lisa Pursehouse and her staff do run a successful Club commercially - Mick Newell and his staff need to do the same playing-wise.

I gather that Peter Moores got a standing ovation at the end ? After all that has happened this season and after whats been said on here perhaps that is a little surprising ?
But no doubt about it - Peter Moores is a thoroughly decent bloke . As to his coaching ability ,I am not qualified to say . But I think most on here will be happy for him to sign another contract for Notts ?
It could be that other openings for Peter are no longer there because of the Notts teams poor 2019 performances? . This is bound to reflect badly on the coaching staff ?

    1. I think doors must be closing for Peter Moores; his team's performances haven't done his chances of a lucrative new contract at TB or anywhere else many favours IMHO. But value is put on T20 cricket and the Elastoplast Outlaws are at Finals Days again, so will red ball ineptitude make much of a difference to PM and the other coaches employability really. 17. You are all correct in being highly concerned about the awful on-field performances but we have to be commercially successful as well. We have a Commercial Director - he and his Team are clearly doing extremely well. We have another Director - the Director of Cricket - who is clearly not doing well.

My clear assumption and expectation is that if the Coomercial Director was failing then he would soon be on his way - so why not the Cricketing Director - what is the difference?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 'We have to be commercially successful as well'. Well why? What are we making money for? We don't have shareholders who are demanding dividend. Paying high wages to poach players from other counties? Well that strategy is not working. Counties like Somerset and Essex put a lot into developing their own players and forming strong links with their local communities. This means the cricket club is rooted in the county. Our Chief Executive' s 'successful' strategy is to get into a kind of arms race competition with Test Match grounds that are much bigger and have larger populations to draw on so however much we spend on Trent Bridge we will always lose out in the big series such as the last Ashes. Meanwhile the cricket goes down the pan and long term members such as myself get alienated.

On a different tack I think that giving white ball only contracts has sent the message to other players that the CC isn't important and they are reacting accordingly.

      Delete
  18. Also, what 'weighting' do we give to White Ball v Red Ball cricket? We have reached Finals days in White Ball and got to Quarter Finals in the 50 Over Competition. Out White Ball cricket puts us up towards the top of the Counties. Red Ball attracts a far lower audience than White Ball. Are many of us unwilling to 'embrace' the 'brave new world' and prefer to retain our
memberships of the Flat Earth Society?

It is not an easy or straightforward issue. As a Senior Member (and I am in the majority here) I much prefer Red Ball cricket - it is where the 'trade' is most effectively learnt; it develops players techniques and concentration; it can last for 4 days and produce huge excitement with some amazing results coming in the last Over even. So how do we reconcile these 2 quite different and conflicting formats of the Game? - that is the serious issue.

  19. Questions questions questions !!
IF ONLY WE KNEW THE ANSWERS .
Time to reflect on the season which has finished at Trent Bridge anyway .
I am still in shock after todays result against Warwickshire .
HOW CAN ANY SIDE LOSE A FOUR DAY MATCH WHEN THEY SCORE ALMOST 500 RUNS IN THE FIRST INNINGS ?
    ITS A SPECTACULAR ACHIEVEMENT .
Sorry to be so cynical but the final result is hard to believe . I gather its produced a record for the total number of runs scored in a 4 day match this season .
