It seems to be an open secret that the committee are divided. One thing is apparent that there is a lack of cricket background of some. Members who know such people perhaps might canvas them to stand, particularly ex players, but also with a professional background.
Ex players who are simply popular don't work. The first thing to be done is a new chair of the cricket committee. The next is a full review of what the cricket staff do and their performance. This MUST be an independent review.
Matt Milne left the club as he was offered a contract worth peanuts - now Luke Wood leaves. It's all well and good saying that it was his decision but one wonders about the circumstances. Peter Moores spoke well at the forum - he has a vast experience.
However saying that it was a young inexperienced team, I would point out - Duckett had played for England, Joe Clarke and Chappell have been on Lions tours - it was the worst batting performance in the championship for some time.
There seems to be something wrong in the coaching dynamics and behind the scenes and hence the need for a review. We are left with the situation of what next?
I have always found the chairman approachable, but perhaps a co-ordinated effort is needed. Lancashire have a Lancashire Action group, but that might be going too far. Individual efforts are always good, but something needs to be done on a more organised front.

ReplyDeleteIt would be very hard for anyone to disagree with any of that, Phil.
ReplyDeleteYes
ReplyDeleteGet some first hand cricketing knowledge into an influential position on the committee or more if they are being over ruled by bean counters
We need some some fresh ideas in the coaching department, the tried and tested "Notts way" is failing us. We need an end to Newell bringing in his old pals and get some external experience in.
There has to be a critical review of 2019 and an end to the weak excuses about a so called young, inexperienced side. Who's fault is it that the younger players don't have seasons of experience under their belts already? Answer, the coach / director of cricket who has been picking the side for a decade or more.
We need proper representation for ordinary, Notts cricket watching, members not just for Test Match ticket priority booking rich folk members.
The lack of comments by other than a tiny minority on this Site does not fill me with any enthusiasm that there is any groundswell for change - the Commitee has, by and large, always been 'self-selecting' and so ex-players and accountants will always do well. The Club though does appear to need a 'root and branch' overhaul with far better measurable standards being produced to hold staff to account for their performances and contributions to the Club across the whole remit of Coaching; playing; youth development; the 'Spectator experience'; heritage; Commercial; catering and Member involvement.
ReplyDeleteWhilst most want to see better on-field performances the totality of the Club also needs to be considered - so we have to be financially sustainable; maintain our Test Match status and appeal to a wide range of Members and spectators. So, in the next few years it seems that we must increase our seating capacity and prioritise what improvements are needed to such areas as the Pavilion and the William Clarke Stand (not forgetting Lady Bay!)- and so we are talking millions of pounds.
The task facing the CEO and the Committee is immense. It needs far more than just new ex-players joining the Committee and more hard-headed Members who will speak out without fear or favour and unite to set out a clear and achieveable 5-year Plan with clear Aims; Objectives; Actions; Accountability and sanctions for failure in all areas.
Yes Sir Philip, I believe you are spot on with those comments but I fear too many are losing their focus and already doing their Elton John impressions(Rocket Man)down there instead
DeletePhilip Measures and Stonewall plus a few others are doing their best to keep the various threads interesting and ongoing .
ReplyDeleteBut consider this .
Total visits to the Notts View site on 3/10/2019 + 477136
this morning at 9.30 the visits had increased to 481740
An increase of 4604 which equates to over 600 per day .
So the interest in the Clubs future is there .
BUT WHERE ARE THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ONGOING DEBATE ?
We need a groundswell of various valid opinions to let the Club know in no uncertain terms that things HAVE to improve and vital changes HAVE to be made . Its obvious that things cannot stay as they are .
Come on you Notts CCC fans and Members - HAVE YOUR SAY ON HERE > Once you have posted up your views you will feel much better for it .
MAGS /NOTTS VIEWER /HBD are putting in a tremendous (unpaid-unbiased) effort in highlighting problems and statistics and thus giving us a platform to be heard .
A famous quotation springs to mind
" For evil to prosper it just needs good men to do nothing!"
I am not saying that anyone connected to Notts is evil in any shape or form - but the gist is simple . Things will probably stay as they are unless pressure from the fans and Members force a change of direction and a fresh injection of momentum.
So come on all you intelligent and computer savvy readers of this site - Lets have your point of view !
Yes, this Site seems to get huge numbers of 'hits' but I wonder how many are repeat visits. Even so, it must have a significant number of 'readers' but very few who comment - strange when it is so easy to do so. Also, hardly anyone uses their own name!
DeleteI do not feel that ordinary members have any real say in how the club is run. I don't know how anything will change, but there is something deeply wrong at the heart of 'our' club.
ReplyDeleteYes I increasingly feel that there is something wtomg which just we don't know about thst is at the heart of the problem. Apart from Fletch, none of the regular first teamers performed at all, which is very odd. The terms "young and experienced" just does not make sense. The team that started the season in CC was young and experienced . The 4 new players who were tried late season did OK, but I fear that we might go back to Samit, who I really feel is a fine player who is struggling to do what he used to master. Cruel ? Yes but professional sport is a tough business. There can be leeway with players trying to establish themselves, but not experienced playets
DeleteNot sure if this is totally the right place, but the subject of being in employment and having a teltionalship is in the news today. Firstly it is not a problem legally or employment ptactice wise in this country. However there is an issue with one of the partners reporting to the other, this is considered a problem in employment practice.
ReplyDeleteFirstly the relationship I am clearly thinking of in our club is nonee of my or anyone on here 's business unless it affects our club. Secondly I am not suggesting that any illegal or bad practice has or is taking place.
However our CEO has to appraise, praise, question and sometimes reprimand anyone who directly reports to her. That is management, that is the role. In extreme circumstances she may have to discipline or even dismiss someone who reports to her. Clearly that is a difficult and embarrassing situation, and employment guidance advised against that situation arising. Not illegal, but difficult. As a club we had a terrible season, and have seen decline for some time now in the performance on the field. Yes the Head Coach has a responsibility, as do players, captain. That is also the nature of responsibility. But the buck stops at the desk of DOC. He is primarily responsible for success and failure or our club on the cricket field. Next year is vital, we need to bounce back. But if we do not, if we are mid table it worse in CC and do little in white ball cricket, then what ? Then the CEO has decisions to make. Those decisions have to be objective, fair and in the interests of the club. I suggest, no more than that, the fact that the 2 are partners makes it harder for the CEO to carry out those duties. It may be therefore wise to perhaps move the DOC to another function within the club, and give the Head Coach effectively both roles, which wad where were before 2O15 anyway. Management should not be made more difficult than is necessary. Stressing again no suggestion here of anything being amiss, just a case for a management situation to be more in line with accepted enjoyment practice
The relationship between our DoC and the CEO has been a cause of concern and titilation in equal measure for a number of years. Of late, the concern has out weighed the humour extracted from this state of affairs. Who does appraise the DoC and on what criteria? The conflicts of interest multiplies when you introduce The Dreaded Hundred into the equation and we all know the result and who is getting shafted....... The members and NCCC. You don't see any CEO or DoC taking responsability for mistakes, failures or misinformation.
DeleteReading through your comment again Rich, you need to have a word with your predicted text but I'm sure that the DoC and the CEO are getting plenty of "enjoyment practice".
Fair comment, I am working on my text !
DeleteYes, fair comment !
ReplyDeleteTo clarify, there is no problem in UK law (unlike USA) with 2 people having a relationship and working in the same organisation. Where a direct report situation is involved, it is also not prohibited. Best practice is for all sides to be open, and the situation can sometimes be accommodated, however it is recognised as a potential area of difficulty and ideally one person can be moved to another posting, although this is not always possible. Each case according to HR best practice should be considered with care, discretion and humanity. So not illegal, not necessarily bad practice, but not ideal
