Death by 100 Cuts

Death by 100 Cuts

Just type in nottsccc into your URL bar on your favourite web-browser and see what happens… it used to be the case that you got redirected to “trentbridge.co.uk”, especially if that was a path regularly trod on your machine, or the search engine would helpfully ask, “Did you mean Trent Bridge?”

So why is the West Bridgford based county the only county cricket club to not have its own identity in some part, or shorted form, in its own web address or Twitter @?

I don’t know, but increasingly I find it irritating and can only speculate the rationale for decision taken back in Derek Brewer’s tenancy.

Could it be to avoid confusion with Nottinghamshire County Council? If so, why do most other counties not have similar issues with their CCC county cricket clubs and CC county councils?

Could it be to avoid confusion with Notts County FC who have also claimed the hashtag #Notts as their own? I seriously doubt it as the use of the word “cricket” in our name would eliminate that conflict immediately.

Hang on a moment, what do a significant number of cricket punters look for online, perhaps they are the 80+% happy with the way Notts CCC are run and of the ticket pricings from the spring poll by The Cricketer, their perhaps only search online once or twice a year…
… Test Match or ODI tickets. They perhaps search for venue; Old Trafford, Edgbaston and Trent Bridge. Old Trafford has further complications, being not even a unique venue name in the same city but Edgbaston manages to separate commercial venue Edgbaston from the cricketing Warwickshire CCC, they’ have even separated Birmingham Bears, so why can’t Trent Bridge?

On Twitter @TrentBridge has 86.5K followers, so why do they follow the account of a venue?
To get news of when Lisa’s office windows got cleaned or when Tom lost the keys to the Dixon Gates padlock? No, I would again only speculate, they follow that account to get news of Nottinghamshire CCC that is why in bold lettering it says Nottinghamshire CCC (blue tick). If followers wanted news about the England coach, they would surely go to a first-hand source such as the ECB, it’s nothing to do with Notts CCC or Trent Bridge. We will no doubt get posts on the website today about Gurney and Hales winning trophies in the Caribbean (and well done to them), at least they used to be our players – we just hire them now the same as their other teams that they play for do. Yes in October, it’s a quiet time at the cricket club, there appears to be no news of necessary firing or hiring after last season’s debacle, so it is legitimate to post stories about what “our players” are doing

So what is irritating this follower of @TrentBridge so much, the wedding event in the DRS, the constant barrage of incitements to dine or drink at Restaurant Six or England this or England that – well all of that, it must be cricket withdrawal symptoms, but what has prompted this piece is the wall to wall propaganda about The Hundred.

You cannot blame the Trent Bridge marketers for exploiting Nottinghamshire CCC and its 86.5K audience of followers, using an established brand to publicise the name of a widely an unwelcome brand. There was a day or two last week when if you went to either the Notts CCC website or Twitter stream, all you could see was Trent Rockets and Joe Root. Is this not diluting the Notts CCC brand? I went to each of the other 7 cuckoo hosting clubs websites and Twitter accounts but didn't find anything like the same Hundred Invasion, any mention of The Hundred was otally absent from several.

Most critics of The Hundred warn of a great divide between the 8 counties with a pop-up franchise cuckoo and the 10 counties that don’t; the 8 will get stronger, richer and more powerful attracting the best players, whereas the 10 will lose influence, their better players moving away and counties eventually withering and join the minor “National Counties”, but I see a more immediate threat to Nottinghamshire’s identity.

If you go to @TrentBridge and all you see is Trent Rockets, what becomes of Nottinghamshire CCC? It’s happening online now but next August if you visit Trent Bridge in the physical world, you won’t see Notts Outlaws or Nottinghamshire CCC playing either, it will be Trent Rockets again.

Is the identity of our club under attack, from marketers in house and at the ECB, it certain looks like it? How long will take before the cuckoo hatchling does what all cuckoo hatchlings are genetically programmed to do and kick out the original resident of the nest, permanently?

Dear @TrentBridge can we have a @NottsCCC or similar please and definitely a @TrentRockets so we can choose to follow or not.

Save Our County

  2. Good points. Not sure when @TrentBridge came in on Twitter. Quite a while ago, and it niggles me a bit. Trent Bridge is though such a famous name. But what will it stage in say 30 years time ? Pretty sure I won't be here to find out, but then what will everything be like in 30 years ? no idea

  3. Does it even matter? If I want to find out about Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club I just go to:
    www.trentbridge.co.uk

    1. But what if you go to www.trentbridge.etc and it's not Notts CCC but the Trent Rockets that you're reading about; are you saying that doesn't matter. What is Notts CCC, the cricket club or the stadium?

  4. Suggest you Google 'nottsccc' as the original writer 'Harry' says and see what comes up! - it's certainly not the Trent Rockets!!!

    1. and when you followed the links from Google what did you find on trentbridge.co.uk? - at the beginning of last week it was Joe Root says...., Rockets... I think you've missed the point of the post. Should the good name of Notts CCC be used to promote the Imposter Rockets, when the end result can only be less Notts CCC at Trent Bridge, more cricket being forced into the extremities of the season and the demise of many county clubs.

  5. The ECB believe that there are too many county clubs. They must be reduced and the weapon they will use is the franchises.

  6. Would you believe it, weaponised Rockets

  7. just cos you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get yer

  8. And just because you ARE paranoid doesn't necessarily mean that they ARE out to get you - BEWARE THE 100 AND THE ROCKETS.

And, 'Nottsviewer' trentbridge.co.uk also contains lots of other information - you just have to decide which Links to then follow - it is NOT promoting the Rockets any more than England etc. - it is informing and it is up to the reader to then exercise choice.

The Trent Rockets are, of course, nothing to do directly with Notts CCC any more than Test Matches and the recent World Cup - but would we want to Site to also ban details about those? - I think not.

    1. You wait and see. Country cricket will be further marginalised. The ECB will be able to control and manipulate the franchises much more easily than they do the county clubs. Mark my words.

    2. I agree with you David - hence why it is essential for Members to be very careful how they vote in relation to the new Governance proposals. For far too long members of the Counties up and down the land have been blind to what they have voted for - a continuous erosion of THEIR Clubs by the ECB - the ECB is a highly dangerous Organisation.

    3. In October the @TrentBridge Twitter account has posted

13 times about Test cricket/England OD or ECB propaganda with or with a TB twist (usually flogging tickets)
9 times about T20 competitions overseas involving players past and/or present of Notts CCC
8 times about Trent Rockets related content
8 times about Charity events supported by Trent Bridge
3 times about Notts CCC directly related matters

It must be the closed season.

    4. Test Matches etc are an honour and we as members are I think thrilled to have guests from many parts of the World. The Hundred to many is something foisted on us against our will

  9. Very similar to what you get with Lancashire. The website is often the last place you will find up-to-date information about Lancashire cricket. Lancashire also sneakily got rid of the word County from the title last year. It’s now just Lancashire Cricket Club.

But, 'LankyDes' the Club is STILL 'Lancashire County Cricket Club per its Constitution - 'Lancashire Cricket' surely makes it 'wider' that just the Club - that is good is it not?

    1. You are right devils advocate. Looked on the website and just about the only mention of the word county is in the rules which still calls it the Lancashire County Cricket club. I’m not sure however as to whether Lancashire Cricket Club is wider than Lancashire County Cricket club.

    2. I think it refers to the female cricket that returned from a spell at Warwickshire back to Notts in 2019. There was a lot of nudge-nudge comments about her action when 4 thousand or so regulars saw her not officially suspect bowling in the summer for the now defunked Lightning franchise.

  13. Saw Wally Hammock posting, great and for a moment thought it was Wally Hammond ! Had a lovely tweet from a cricket fan and player from Canada. He is saying in their local domestic league they have agreed to always play in white, with a red ball and have proper overs !

  16. In a break from guess what, the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee are taking evidence today and tomorrow from ECB top brass, The Cricket Supporters Association and a very strong opponent of the Hundred. The emphasis is on how the World Cup success can be used to help domestic cricket in England and Wales including the county game, and whether the Hundred will help or hinder this. Will the two dudes from ECB even understand the question ? Helping County Cricket ?
